(See for what others say at http://www.ammonjohns.com/testimonials.html andhttp://uk.linkedin.com/in/ammonj ) Sometimes I feel I could describe all that to myself in one word: Old :o) I've been commercially involved with the web since 1995 when I started building websites, first for myself and later for pay.  Through 1996 and '97 I was spending more and more time on working out how to get traffic and custom to sites.   Following demand (what people were actually hiring me to do rather than what I advertised I did) I shut down my web design business in 1997 and became a full-time specialist in web promotion. By 1998 I'd started to attract something of a following for my advice, help and general observations in one of the big forums of the day - MarketPositionTalk - which was run by Web Position Gold. Later, I moved over to a new forum my old friend +Kim Krause Bergwas starting at www.cre8asiteforums.com and there met a lot of new friends and seemed to gain even more of a following. Across the years since then, I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of clients, and to exchange views and ideas with hundreds of other SEOs, webmasters, and others.  I've had the honour of helping small businesses to be successful, and of helping successful businesses to become giants. My approach is inherently practical yet with a high degree of creativity.  I love when a client can show me a problem and I can get to work on coming up with solutions that can blow your mind with the creative thinking, yet at the same time are so completely practical they seem obvious in hindsight. Of course, I'm not just about my work.  I'm fascinated by psychology, passionate about many arts, and can rarely resist the opportunity to share a good pun ... or a bad one.  In addition to this personal profile, you can also find me interacting through my business profile https://plus.google.com/+Ammonjohns/ I am also involved with Bill and Ammon's Bogus Hangout (an extremely casual but fun weekly Hangout on Air with no specific topic) and with The CodeMidweek Zap - Wyld Stallyns of SEO2016-03-16 20:00:0031

Two of his grandparents were Leningrad conservatory graduates and both parents were music majors as well. Grandfather Lev Krutz was a violinist with the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra. During one of the darkest hours of WWII, he participated in the historic debut of the Leningrader Symphony by Dmitry Shostakovich. This live broadcast inspired all of Russia. Anton began making violins at age twelve in Kansas City, apprenticing to master luthier Earsel Atchley. (the first American to enter a Quartet in an International European making competition). He attended and graduated from the internationally known Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City and then concentrated on the restoration of valuable instruments. Working in different prestigious shops across the country he ended up in the violin shop of Philip Injean across from Carnegie Hall and then with the David Gage Bass shop in New York. Anton later moved to Kansas City joining his father Misha Krutz. Now Anton builds his own instruments and enjoys an international reputation. His instruments are owned and played by many of today's prominent musicians. Geometry My model, arches, and graduations are all based on "Golden Proportion" (.618) geometry, for centuries designated as a phi (F). Its presence can be found in the sacred art of Egypt, India, China, Islam, and other civilizations. Also many aspects of nature like organic life, the human body, lightning, and sound evolve through the laws of Golden proportion. The Cremonese used this knowledge in the construction of their instruments. incorporating the same principles in all my instrument's archings and graduations gives them a unison of voice that when played together is rarely heard. "There must be no decoration, only proportion." Quote from St. Bernard of Clairavaux, who inspired the architecture for some of the most incredibly resonant acoustic twelfth-century churches. Graduations The thicknesses or graduations of the top and back plates are very influential on the sound. Violinmakers start out using widely accepted standard graduations. I'm the owner/manager of Intermart New Zealand a web design company, situated in central Christchurch. We have been providing web based solutions for our clients since 1996. I love words. Especially creative words. A thoughtful post or expressive subtle humour always appeals. This deep interest in words led me to develop a comprehensive semantically connected wordbank over the past 10 years. Creating this resource was an incredible experience in itself. I saw the various links and threads within the English language (and a few others) unfolding before my eyes over an extended period and the impact of this knowledge has had a huge effect on me and the way I perceive things to this day.  Semantic understanding allows us to go outside the confines of narrow mindedness so we can comprehend this new knowledge in exactly the way as Google's algorithms see it. In a way the AI got ahead of us. So now we've got to catch up and become far more semantically aware This smarting up is absolutely vital to face the challenges of this current age. After compiling the wordbase structure and associated links I began the development of our semantic algorithms. These produce a definitive hierarchy of relationships for any search term, producing top matches and an extensive set of words that can be instantly utilised for authoring purposes and for direct semantic analysis. The _Hummingbird_ update was where it all turned around for us because we had already optimised our sites semantically some months prior to it. So without lifting a finger I watched in utter amazement as all of our sites rose dramatically to top tier results on the local SERPS. Art and electronic music are my other loves and especially photography. My Dad was an enthiusiast and so I had access to a darkroom ever since I was a kid. Pretty good job, really, as my daily e-zine, Freelancer Plus, revolves around all four of those concepts. Breaking Rules is about saying no to the status quo and the social media and marketing experts that tell you their way is the only way to reach success. It isn’t.  The only way to success is the one that you create for yourself, the one that fits you like a glove and reaches deep inside of you and pulls out your strengths and uses them to their highest possibility. RightStart Websites632*How many times have you said: “I just don’t have time for….” about something you are told is good for your business?  I venture to guess that SEO is one of those times.* The problem is not that you don’t have time.  The problem is understanding how important it really is to your business and that you can actually learn to apply some of its principles without having to struggle with hard tech stuff.  The world has changed and continues to change for so many businesses. The change itself is a great leveller. Understanding what has changed, its impact and how to take advantage of it rewards the nimble, small business owner over larger rivals. The truth is that there are things you can do that are plain, simple and will also enhance your web visibility and help your business develop faster. In the past, doing business meant taking your products or services to a local market place, setting up shop and being there every day.  Today, that marketplace is moving to the web, your customers are ON the web everyday, sometimes all day.  Mobile is only going to accelerate this trend, so to move forward and survive you must also BE THERE. In 2014 alone there were over 3 billion internet users worldwide, over 310,000 are in North America alone with a 187% growth between 2000 and 2014.  The internet is not going to stop growing.  There are times when someone writes a book that quickly becomes a primer, a foundational book that every business should read.  @115620878851836664537  has written such a book: _SEO Help: 20 Semantic Search Steps That Will Help Your Business Grow_ . It won’t blow your fuses, it won’t require an advanced degree in rocket science. It’s a direct and practical guide to all the things you can do IN your business that will make your business better AND at the same time, help you become more visible on the web.  A killer combination. We are thrilled to have David on our *Small Business WebTech Show* once again, to discuss and focus on key elements of his book and the business practices and strategies that will enhance your everyday business AND optimize your business for search visibility, all at the same time. *Do you have time for that?* *About David* David needs no introduction for many, but in case you missed it… @115620878851836664537  is the author of eight best-selling books including "Google Semantic Search: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Techniques That Gets Your Company More Traffic, Increases Brand Impact and Amplifies Your Online Presence" and "Google+ Hangouts for Business: How to use Google+ Hangouts to Improve Brand Impact, Build Business and Communicate in Real-Time." His very latest one: SEO Help: 20 Semantic Search Steps that will help your Business Grow is a practical guide to semantic search optimization for busy webmasters and marketers.    He helps multi-national clients and start-ups to organize their SEO and Social Media strategies. Thomas E. Hanna | BlogPhoto.tv3,912*How Do You Fund Your Dream?* As entrepreneurs, you know that - at some point - you have to raise the capital to fund your enterprise. If you're like most entrepreneurs, the idea is a bit intimidating. But it doesn't have to be. It starts by knowing your worth, and then _knowing what to do with it._ This is exactly what @104267556228949747305 has made a living doing: helping entrepreneurs understand how to fund their business. Stephanie is the founder of Finance-Ability and the author of the upcoming book _How To Fund Your Business Without Selling Your Soul._ On Tuesday, I'll be sitting down with her to ask just how budding entrepreneurs like you can develop the capital they need to take their business to the next level. Ray Hiltz28,291*What goes into choosing an image for our blog or social media posts?* The whole world of visuals and social media is huge but the #RayBunch  has never shied away from squeezing big topics in our 30 minute show. To help us cut to the core issues of the science and art of choosing that _right_ image, I reached out to the guy who is as generous as he is genius in his knowledge of visuals -@107665939201638457855  Evidence of his generosity can be noted by the fact that there is no "i" in the eponymous name of his website: http://dustn.tv/ Dustin has shared many articles and appeared in many HOAs to share his opinion about branding, colours, fonts and other visual aspects on content marketing. My reason for inviting him here today is to discuss, along with @110746124112827812577 @100499707306826250884 @109237790792840071389 @103099684867114686987 and you, how we can make more informed decisions on what imagery we want to represent our content. *Are images necessary on blogs?* *Do we need to put text on images?* *What effects do our choice of colours (or lack of) have?* *How important are video thumbnails?* Notice I didn't mention copyright issues. There are many great posts circulating that can help you with that like Dustin's: _Best Places to Find Free Images Online_ - http://goo.gl/DpT54b In short, if you don't own it or are certain you're allowed to use it - don't. (See for what others say at http://www.ammonjohns.com/testimonials.html and http://uk.linkedin.com/in/ammonj ) Sometimes I feel I could describe all that to myself in one word: Old :o) I've been commercially involved with the web since 1995 when I started building websites, first for myself and later for pay. Later, I moved over to a new forum my old friend +Kim Krause Berg was starting atwww.cre8asiteforums.com and there met a lot of new friends and seemed to gain even more of a following. Wiser Sites, LLC2,226It’s been a while, but we are back for a special encore presentation with @103507319847335351139  and we will be talking about “Other Employed to Bootstrapping: an Entrepreneur's Journey”  Ok what does it mean?  Well, we see a lot of posts in our streams talking about tools and tactics, and equally as many written for the successful business professional. But there’s a content vacuum when it come to information for the person that is in the transition phase from other employed to self employed to Bootstrapper.  What am I talking about. “Other employed” is a phrase I coined which means, “working for the man” being a 9-5er, full time employment. Let me be very clear here, I have the deepest respect for full time employees. Business need staff, and staff needs business. But let’s face it, not all of us are built for 9 to 5. Some of us are entrepreneurs at heart. it’s in our blood.  And weather it happens in an instant or over time, there will be 2 significant moments in our lives. The time we quit our job to work for ourselves, and the time we quit working for ourselves and build a business.  This week we have with us Denise Wakeman. 18 years in the internet business coaching and consulting small business owners. She is a foundations coach. Meaning she focuses on the ground level first, then when the time is right, paints the walls or in her words, “Tools or tactics...are secondary to your entrepreneurial success. When you radiate Joy, people notice and gravitate to you. Then the tools and tactics serve as vehicles to engage and interact with your desired audience.”  Join me this week for the return of On Track Tips.  We're going to be speaking to online businesses and we're going to be speaking to brick and mortars. We're going to be speaking to YOU.  Make sure you show up this week and ask your questions. Go over to http://OnTrackTips.com and push the BIG red button. We take your questions and bring them into the show.  ====================================================== Start asking questions now AND invite 2 friends! Did you click "Yes" on the event invite? Yifat Cohen87,850*What if....* Google+ is not a social network at all - never intended to be a Facebook killer, nor a Twitter wanna-be and definitely not in a rush to keep up with everything else out there...? *What if....* Google+ is Google's way of analyzing our personal relationships across all their products (because relationships can't be faked) and use that knowledge to fuel services like Google Now, Nest, Home automation and Driveless cars...? *"So what the fuck is Google+ for anyway?"* @102034052532213921839 is an ex-Google employee who helped design the UX of Google+ before he left Google a year ago, and whose name came up again on the Plus stream when he shared his *Thoughts on Google+* asking [quote] "So what the fuck is Google+ for anyway?" and got the community talking. *SO LET'S -TALK- HANGOUT ABOUT IT.* Chris is very disappointed with Google+ because he expects better from Google. But maybe he's expecting the wrong things? @113117251731252114390 rebutted Chris' post and defended Google+ in a Google+ post that was shared 524 time and sparked conversations across the Plus (https://www.gplusgotogal.com/MikeElganRebuttal1)  Chris responded - https://www.gplusgotogal.com/ChrisMessinaRebutal And Mike claimed that Chris lost the argument because he didn't answer the main questions: "What site has 1) a better community; 2) better troll control; 3) better photo tools; 4) better integration with a leading wearables platform; 5) better conversations; 6) better monetization; 7) better search?" (https://www.gplusgotogal.com/MikeElganRebuttal2) Basically, comparing Google+ to Facebook again. (_sigh_) *IS CHRIS USING GOOGLE+ WRONG?* Chris, who was an integral part in the development of Google+ for 3.5 years was told by @107742059751171695340 that he was using Google+ wrong. He should have been talking and listening to Top Contributors (which Jaana is one) who have their ears to the ground: _"Which is the direction it's taking? That depends. Also on us, the users.  Google listens."_ (You should definitely read the comments on Jaana's post, where she and Chris get into an agreement - https://www.gplusgotogal.com/JaanaNyströmGooglePlus) *IS IT ABOUT THE SHARED INTEREST GRAPH?* Perhaps the best insight is that of @105103058358743760661 who read between Chris' lines and brought up the point of Big Data and information networks: [Google+] "should have been 1000% focused on helping people build a rich information network around the things we care most about - our interest graph - and then to use that interest graph to connect us with *new* people who share those interests with us - our "shared interest graph." And if it's about the interest graph, then who's better than @115620878851836664537 to remind us that that takes time: _ It requires building a bunch of things, integrating them and then waiting to see how people will use them and what the data will show you. Yifat Cohen87,850*Ever wanted to talk to a successful Internet marketer like Jeff Johnson and ask him straight up questions?* _Coming up this Tue. as part of the Inner Circle perks_ For the longest time @102161332999811797009  was (and still is) my best role model for building a business around the lifestyle you want. I met Jeff a few years ago in Detroit at one of his seminars and barely dared to come up and say hi. Then I met him again at 's MetaMind event where we managed to grab lunch and talk G+. As I was creating content for his latest launch, I discovered the real life of this multimillionaire, family man - *he likes his time off.*  Most successful people I know are also workaholics and hardly have any time to enjoy their hard earned money. But not Jeff. He takes 2-3 times off during the summer to go finishing with his family, he doesn't work at night and he ensures he enjoys what he does in his biz. *How does he do it? - join the Inner Circle to find out.* Members of the Inner Circle get to join the Hangout and interact with Jeff face to face, asking any questions they might have about their own online business, helping them leap to the next level. Since I'm re-launching the Inner Circle with this hangout, you get to *test our Inner Circle community for free!* How cool is that! Check back here before Friday for the link to join the front lines of those taking Hangouts to the next level, and reserve your spot to hangout with world experts face to face. ------------------- #jeffjohnson   #hangoutsonair   #gplusgotogal   #trafficgeneration   #leads   #webtraffic   #conversionoptimization   #onlinemarketing   #makingmoneyonline   #membership  Building a business around your lifestyle - with Jeff Johnson2014-11-11 19:00:0072

ISOOSI Research Engine3,469*Video Marketing - the unfair advantage* The ISOOSI Tuesday Marketing Chat ( #isoosichat  )hangout with special guests @110256277832745362774 and @109237790792840071389  joining the regular discussion panel of @113426828273677356184 @106515636986325493284 and @116843668885160648294  This week our show focuses on video marketing, and at the ways in which video excels as a medium for marketing to the extent that it almost seems like an unfair advantage. Our Guests this week are incredibly knowledgeable and talented in this space. @109237790792840071389 is famed for giving "The Scott Treatment" - Reviving, Re-packaging and Re-purposing great content with an emphasis on video and HOAs.  Among other clients, he works on doing his thing for Stonetemple's excellent video/HOA strategy. @110256277832745362774 of @105271135735494528442 is very knowledgable in this space.  Not only does he produce a range of video marketing production services for clients, he also experiments extensively with what can be done on a given platform. This week's panel will be discussing the power of video for marketing in all its aspects.  Obviously we are fans, as the weekly shows prove.  But there's a lot more to video marketing than just hangouts and live streaming. For one thing, YouTube has a massive user-base, and a search traffic all of its own, which you are not able to tap at all without some kind of video offering.  Unlike other search engines, people searching on YouTube often continue to browse through results for a long time, and not only choose one answer to their search. Google also tries to offer diverse media in every search result, meaning that some video or other is almost always in the first page of search results, but often selected from a much, much smaller pool of related content. Then there's the fact that video is one of the best forms of cross-platform content for social network platforms.  There is absolutely no better way to get a complex message onto twitter, for instance, given the character limits.  But remember also that while you have to vary the length of snippets for each platform, almost all allow a youtube video to be embedded right into the stream.  Its the one post that can work exactly the same on Facebook, Twitter, and G+ too. Even in the small details, video offers some great advantages.  With watermarking, lower-third graphical overlays, and similar in-picture branding, it is a lot harder for someone to simply copy and paste your work as their own. In the course of the show, we'll discuss what sort of investment is needed for professional looking video, how to determine the right kind of video content for your needs, and many insights into how to maximize the results of video marketing.ISOOSIchat: Video Marketing2014-07-29 21:00:00214

Stephan Hovnanian43,344*Social Proof - The Ultimate Showdown!* Most of us have heard the phrase "social proof" and seen/read discussions on the value of "engagement" in getting additional audience attention and actions. But how relevant is social proof? Is social proof really a factor, and if so, a good factor? This battle is between two professionals, one standing on the side of Social Proof, and the other believing that much of it is malarkey: *In the Red Corner: @107665939201638457855:* Dustin is a proponent of social proof, saying that "if you saw two restaurants on the street, one with a line out the door, and one without, which would you want to go to for dinner?" Get Dustin's full thoughts on social proof in his popular blog post, _This Changes Everything_ (http://goo.gl/P5t8GW) *In the Blue Corner, @106704368739672674589:*  In David's eyes, how your audience is earned will make a huge difference in the value that you derive from the audience you create, and whether it returns value to your goals (ROI) or is simply an exercise in Ego. In other words, seeing/experiencing value is more important than social proof, both for businesses and customers. Get David's thoughts on earned audiences here (http://goo.gl/uw5sDY) *Your Moderator, @105076725141939280120:*  Stephan is going to play Switzerland here, and hopefully keep these two passionate businessmen from jumping through their respective screens and getting physical. In the immortal words of the ref from Rocky IV, _"watch the low blows, and the rabbit punches. In case of a knockdown, go to the corner I tell you to and wait until I tell you to come out."_ *You!* We want to hear from you, which is more important, social proof, or tangible value, or something in between? ISOOSI Research Engine3,469*Identity and Tone of Voice in Copywriting - How words shape brands* with @115124864391789940258 and @111081752713318683929  First impressions count. This is just as true online as offline, and possibly even more so.  In the real world, we often have many more contextual references to frame a first impression, such as how we've met, where, and when. Online, our first impression of a website may be the landing page after we clicked on a search result, or some article we arrived at from a link elsewhere.  There's less real-world context in many cases, and we seek to judge whether we can trust a page and site very quickly. Professional design surely plays a part, just like appearances matter in the real world.  But even more important is how this person, or website speaks to us.  The way we connect, or not, with the words on the website are a huge part of how we will feel about the website itself, and the business behind it. Of course, its not just about first impressions, either.  Brand is largely about consistent qualities.  Style, tone of voice, clarity, and many more aspects of copywriting become the ways we assess the 'personality' of a business. This week we'll discuss copywriting in the context of brand, identity and tone of voice.  Expect our usual mix of looking at both the philosophical ideas, and the practical tips. ISOOSI Research Engine3,469*Resistance to SEO - when professions collide* with @117465476555941682843  and @111081752713318683929   In this show, we look at how and why some professionals, including bloggers, Usability types, web devs, and sales copywriters, have a negative and dismissive view of SEO.  Despite the success stories, and the huge demand for SEO generally across the board, the negative reputation in many places is still very apparent, with SEO professionals often still treated as though peddling snake-oil to the gullible. @117465476555941682843  has said "Coming from a PR/Marketing background since way back, I've always felt true content was king. Never been a fan of working SEO. I'm in the dismissive corner due to watching the negative affect "SEO professionals" have caused clients and others. I've worked hard in the past with clients to undo the damage by the snake oil types. Has left a bad taste in my mouth." She's not alone. It is all too easy for SEO professionals inside 'the echo chamber' to hear primarily only from people who understand SEO and believe in it.  In the wider world, a great many people who have strong input on websites are quite dismissive of SEO, having primarily seen only the kind that appears in a million spam emails. @111081752713318683929 suggested the topic for this week, as she has close ties to the SEO world, but also gets to see the views that some other copywriters have about SEO. There are still a great many bloggers, for just one example, who think SEO is an unnecessary measure - you just create good articles and content and Google will figure it all out.  Others have read a few too many of the "SEO in 10 easy steps" articles who think that those ten steps are all there is.  No matter that around 80% of the websites hit by the Panda update were blogs and bloggers...  It isn't just one-sided either.  There are many SEOs of varying skill levels who are dismissive of all the other facets of successful web ventures.  SEOs who mistakenly put an importance on rankings ahead of usability, or conversions - leading to a site that gets lots of people to see how much it sucks.  Heck, even very experienced SEOs sometimes make very dismissive or even disparaging remarks about social media specialist, for example. The fact is, marketing online is still marketing, and requires many diverse approaches all come together in a unified and integrated campaign.  Increasingly, it will also need to integrate with the offline marketing too. In this frank and open discussion we aim to discuss the genuine bad experiences and views that give SEO a poor reputation to those who've not seen it done well.  We explore how people can identify the good SEO practices from the poor majority, and we may even be able to explore ways in which the reputation of SEO can be improved. Whatever the outcome, you know you can rely on #isoosichat  to deliver a lot of fresh ideas to think about, some practical advice on how SEOs can better get along with other maResistance to SEO - When Professions Collide2014-06-10 21:00:00195

ISOOSI Research Engine3,469In the latest installment of the weekly ISOOSI Tuesday Chat we are joined by @103682117587904833322 - a true veteran of Internet Marketing.  Together, we shall discuss and explore ways to attract those all-important links and citations to a site or venture that is not yet famed or renowned. *How Do You Attract Links _Before_  You Have Reputation?* Years ago, @116884753591158922581 (another true veteran marketer) wrote a superb article entitled "The Filthy Linking Rich", where he explained how the same sort of *power law* that applies to other resources, such as wealth, apply just as much to links.  Just as the rich get richer, so do those with lots of links get more exposure, and thus attract more links. We'll discuss that power law briefly, but mainly we'll focus on how to overcome it.  How do we attract links to a site that is newer, or has so far been seen as less authoritative (its cited less often)? This topic naturally follows from last week where we discussed Starting New Online Ventures, and has a strong relationship to getting that new venture up and running.  As always, expect some wonderful food for thought, and many practical insights. ISOOSI Research Engine3,469Ep 25: In this weeks ISOOSI Chat we will be joined by a very special panel - some of our beloved viewers and commentators - to talk about *Starting New Online Ventures* In recent weeks we'd noticed several audience comments indicating they were planning, working on, or starting their own websites, blogs and general online ventures.  We absolutely love that.  The whole reason for these #isoosichat  shows is to show and spread our passion for all things related to online marketing.  So naturally, we thought it would be a wonderful time to have a show about how to get started. Our wonderful panel at the Marketing Roundtable this week includes:  @101280116286631896187, @116223077903214390102 and @100860818239902042246, 3 lovely people whom many of you will know from several top hangout audiences, all joining the @116843668885160648294    #isoosichat regulars @113426828273677356184, @106515636986325493284, @112430199625001815612 and @112297740908382826372 Among the questions our panel will be throwing into the ring, we'll be discussing all of the basics like: > Identifying and scoping your potential market > How to research customers and build up customer profiles > How small is a 'minimal viable' start? > How to gain traction and momentum from scratch. The lessons don't just apply to starting your first blog for either brand or income, as many of these are about the marketing processes and decision that affect and size and scale of new venture, from a first blog to a 15th ecommerce business. Likewise, those of our regular viewers already comfortable with starting up new ventures, please don't feel like this isn't a show you need.  We'd really love for you to share your own hard won lessons and experiences in the comments throughout the event. I think this is a great way to show this 'collaboration' thing, and the community spirit, that we so often talk about on G+. Join us, live, or leave any burning questions, however great or small in the comments, and help us out.Starting New Online Ventures2014-05-13 21:00:0064

Tina Willis21,366After @111841212850657022428 spent a week enjoying the Florida Keys, and I spent a long weekend enjoying Daytona Beach, followed by a half-week of semi-vacation, we are both revitalized and ready to get back moving on G+.  So we figured the lawyers in our audience might benefit from a discussion of strategies and success tips on Google Plus.  We plan to share some of our own strategies, as well as getting input from our exciting guests on this topic. Our guests this coming Monday include two of my favorite G plussers, who have actually become real friends of mine IRL because of Google Plus, and whose business includes web development and social media management for other businesses, including several lawyers over time. @115124864391789940258 calls herself a “digital storyteller,” and is frankly one of the most intelligent women I have ever met.  She reads 52 books a year and can write compelling copy as well as anyone I have encountered on Google Plus.  She is a partner in her own company, CT Social, and she is the primary blog writer for the company. @114810785118202834941 often describes himself as a geek, and is also exceptionally bright.  He studied computer engineering but transformed into a hyper coding animal of sorts.  He also writes great blog and social media entries, but his primary job is writing pages and pages of code to make the website design magic happen for clients of CT Social.   They are both regular contributors to the hugely successful @106226439354629484339  During our next broadcast, among other topics, we will discuss: How to be personal and social on G+, without sacrificing professionalism, How to attain more followers, How to attain more truly engaging followers, How to attract the attention of influencers, Best posting & engagement practices, How to most effectively work with a marketing and website design company, to help with your social media strategy. _Do you have any other questions related to lawyer strategies on Google Plus?_ *How & Where To Watch:* Google Events: watch, comment & ask questions right from this event page. *Watch Later If You Can't Join Us Live* If you can't make the show, you can catch the YouTube replay right here on the event or by joining the Legally Speaking community where we share all past shows.   Join the Legally Speaking Community Here: http://bit.ly/19qgbyw *Rocket Matter Rocks* Special shout out to @117678159005676851685   leading cloud-based law practice management solution for small to mid-sized firms. ISOOSI Research Engine3,469Ep 23: The agency/client relationship is a complex and sometimes tricky thing. But most of us are on *at least one side* of such a relationship, and many of us may be on both sides at different times.  Getting these relationships right, making them successful, is something many of us not only struggle with initially, but constantly have to revisit and re-evaluate. Join us for a discussion of the weighty and important issues of how we select partners, or how we offer ourselves as partners to others.  We'll talk about how a company can select a good agency, and the slightly less discussed issue of how an agency needs to select and be choosy with clients. This is another fully interactive show, so please use the comments to raise questions, for our panel and for each other, and to talk about this tricky but fundamental part of business. Tina Willis21,366*What Are The Trending Issues Facing Website Owners Trying To Rank Higher In Semantic Search?* *Featuring One Of The Most Awesome SEO Experts In The World @115620878851836664537* We couldn’t be more excited about our next guest on Legally Speaking, which is none other than one of the world’s greatest SEO experts, @115620878851836664537.  Please join me and @111841212850657022428 in digging into current issues trending in SEO. *SEO Questions We Hope To Discuss With David:* *** Do reciprocal links help improve ranking & what exactly constitutes a reciprocal link?  Specifically, is reciprocity measured site wide or on a page by page basis? *** Can we review again any and all benefits that flow from G+ activity to website ranking?  What percentage of time should someone spend on social media versus blog content for their own site? *** Is there likely more authority or value (in search) from interacting with those who work in your profession, or might care about what you post, or those with higher overall influence on G+? *** Hypothetical situation (relevant to lawyers): let’s say someone consistently receives a high number of reshares and plus ones one their profile, most likely because they generously share and plus one a huge number of posts (so others are reciprocating).  Does engagement from those types of profiles or pages have a high value?  In other words, for example, does it help more to get reshared from someone who reshares selectively or someone who reshares and gives a plus one on a large number of posts daily (particularly with little commenting or discussion)?  *** Since Google has "gone dark," how do SEO experts determine relevant keywords to target these days?  Is there any software, site or service that still provides relevant keyword data? *** What is the current state of affairs with guest blogging?  Will these posts help you in search? *** Is there any danger to participating in sites that syndicate posts, such as Triberr, which will soon begin reproducing users' entire posts on their site, and allow others to do the same, as well as very easily allowing members to share content from others in their tribes across social media platforms? *** Any suggestions for making theoretically “boring” topics like the law interesting when blogging? *** Are there any new or trending issues in search ranking and optimization?  Changes and predictions going forward for staying ahead of the curve. *Our List Might Be Too Long* We may not get through all of them but those are the burning questions on our minds, which seem to be trending throughout attorney circles and communities.  These are obviously questions relevant to everyone, lawyers and non-lawyers alike, so we hope you all will tune in! We can’t wait to feature such a tremendous expert in this field on our show.  Although we don’t want to send David running for the hills, we are going to try to use our questioning skills to get to the bottom of these burning SEO issues! _Do Trending Issues in SEO On Legally Speaking2014-04-21 22:00:0098

Irrespective of the channel - search, social, video, email - and the content by which you aim to attract them to your offerings, understanding  your target market mix is crucial for success. In this hangout we'll discuss with Mike the subject of online personas and methodologies he has used over the years to help him use these to great effect. We'll discuss the use of user demographic tools and analysis to help build up more accurate data driven representations of market segments... and the ideal customer avatar for your business. Why is this so important? If you know your audience, you then can tailor the content and user experience to suit and subsequently improve the rate of conversion.  Using data to build clear images of segments and personas can transform  your online presence considerably. Not only in terms of reaching the audience more effectively...  but also how you communicate to them when they're "in front" of you. Jason T. Wiser21,734*State of the Business Address: Getting Real and Personal* This program is produced by http://OnTrackTips.com It’s time to get real and it’s time to get personal. Can you believe it? This is episode #25 of “Get on Track Stay on Track”  That’s one episode a week for 25 weeks, a little over 6 months, and it blows my mind where my business was 6 months ago, and where it is today.  Yeah sure I made a lot of mistakes along the way, I’m still making plenty of them now, But I tell you what there’s a lot of stuff that is working and it is working really well. So that’s why this week I’m doing a special “State of the Business address” and I am getting up close and personal. But not just me.  I’m bringing back one of our previous guests, @105076725141939280120  . You know him, you love him; And we’re spinning the mic around. The two of us are going to talk about what we've been doing over the past 6 months to grow our business at such an incredible rate.  OK so neither one of us has 2 homes, a Maserati, and a yacht, but guess what! We’re successful businessmen. You know, 6 months ago I had one assistant. Today I wrote checks for 6 different vendors and none of them went to Fiverr or iWriter.  So you want to know how we’re doing this?  You have to show up to find out. And that means *show up live.* *There’s not going to be a replay.* Not this time. That’s right. no replay. No after the fact. No, "Oh! I'm sorry I cant make this one. I'll catch it later." As soon as this is over, It’s over.  I will be taking the Interview down and making it private. Period.  Ok I know it sounds harsh, but I’m doing this for our On Track Tips subscribers. So let me ask you, did you head over to http://OnTrackTips.com to push the big red button? Here’s some of the things we are going to be talking about in this half hour firehose. ⇒ What did it take for us to quit your day jobs and build a business. ⇒ How do we Scaling our business beyond ourselves? ⇒ How do we financing our business growth as a bootstrap company, and still take a paycheck for our family? ⇒ What are the biggest mistakes that we've made. Make sure you don’t do this, and absolutely don’t do that!  This isn't some smoke and mirrors sales pitch. This is a put your money where your mouth is, or stay quiet moment. We're hanging ourselves out to dry. After this event, you will either unsubscribe, or you will be a fan for life. So you know what to do. Click "Yes"  Ask Questions. Invite 2 friends.  ====================================================== Catch past interviews  http://ontracktips.com and look for the big RED button. Ryan Hanley13,184*Building Your Platform Inside Google's "Social Layer"* Google Plus is a different kind of social network. If you've spent any time on Google Plus, _(and I'm sure most of you reading this have)_, then you're keenly aware of the demands Google Plus puts on you as a community member.  We can't hashtag or ad buy our way to a valuable audience on Google Plus. That's why I asked @105076725141939280120 and @117778937939543425499 to join us on Content Warfare TV to explain the basics of building a platform. ISOOSI Research Engine3,469This week on the #ISOOSICHAT  we are excited to have special guest @112116680648779331229 from Search Engine Roundtable (SER). Barry will be joining our regular #ISOOSIChat panelists including @113426828273677356184 @106515636986325493284 and @112430199625001815612. Barry has provided a very unique and valuable commentary on search engines and the search marketing industry for many years. Barry and the SER team report on the most interesting threads taking place at various popular Search Engine Marketing forums each day. Search Engine Roundtable not only reports on these topical issues, but also provides a synopsis that provides greater detail on these forum threads. One of SER's primary goals is provide a single source for the reader to visit to locate the most interesting threads covered at the SEM forums. Those in our audience that visit or contribute to forums know that sometimes things can get stated that are not based on facts. Sometimes these observations may lead to statements that sound like fact, but they are unfounded. We are after all talking about search engines here and considerations that are impacted by their algorithms - which unfortunately we in the SEM arena don't have access to :) Observations such as these can quickly turn from threads with some small incorrect assumptions into more widespread rumors and sometimes into larger myths that stick around for a longer period of time. Barry and his team do a great job of monitoring “hot topics” on the forums, presenting all sides of those important issues while contributing to the discussion with their own valued opinions. Bill Slawski, (Director of Search Marketing at Go Fish Digital) is well known for his vast knowledge of Google and other search engines and the patents that have been filed relating to their ranking algorithms. Although it is difficult to have certainty about the value and mix of individual search engine ranking signals, Bill has the notable ability to always bring always bring it back to facts…. referencing related patents, interviews or official statements on the subject. On this hangout we aim to separate fact from fiction. Rumors and myths versus papers and truths and all points between.Search Marketing Rumors, Myths and Truths2014-03-18 20:00:0059
Ryan Hanley13,184*Dominate Image Content Marketing with Pinterest* If you're not using Pinterest in your content marketing, then you're leaving traffic, subscribers and leads on the table.  Unfortunately, like so many others, I'm one of those people not harnessing the full potential of Pinterest. But that won't be the case after our chat with @104858643838035519891 and @108493275257625053433 on Content Warfare TV. Pinterest isn't just for selling retail items and planning your wedding anymore. This image-centric traffic driving juggernaut have become a staple social network for content marketers right alongside Twitter, Facebook LinkedIn and our beloved Google Plus. If you want to rock Pinterest hard and grow your business... you're just going to have to watch/listen to what will be an amazing episode. ISOOSI Research Engine3,469Tuesday March 11th we have a great #ISOOSIChat lined up for our audience with our special guests @100575300343443701396 and @108234536208176601636. Alan and David will join our panel regulars @113426828273677356184 @106515636986325493284 and @112430199625001815612 to discuss the subject of search engine penalties. We'll get to know Panda (again) and our old friend Penguin. We'll discuss the differences between algorithmic penalties and manual penalties... and other types of penalties you may have encountered along the way too.  How do you know if your website is under the dark cloud of a penalty? If you are under a penalty what are things you need to do to start the recovery process. Should you use Google's link "Disavow Tool" ?  If so, when...  and are there some best practices that can be highlighted to improve the chances of a manual reconsideration review after submitting a disavow link file. What kind of timeline should you expect for a recovery to occur if those processes are implemented....   and is recovery even a possibility? It can be a very complicated subject for business owners to grasp if they are not immersed in search engine marketing on a daily basis. What also makes it worse is that sometime business owners have found themselves in this situation because of techniques implemented by agencies they had hired to help them.  We'll try to break it down in a simple way to give the viewers who find themselves in this situation the answers and resources they need so they can turn the page.... and start the road to recovery.Pandas, Penguins & Penalties - ISOOSI Tuesday Chat2014-03-11 20:00:0088

On this page you can find always all topics our crawler has found with a link to the topic page on Google+.

It would be interesting to know how these topics have been selected by Google+, e.g there is a topic for "Cats" and one for "Cats and Dogs" but no topic for "Dogs"? ;)

Catalunya Clouds

The last fortnight, we've been in Santa Susanna, Barcelona.

Rather than multi-post, some of the best cloud pics are in this album (these are from my Android phone - tons more on my Canon).

The task of snapping clouds was made more arduous as we didn't see a single cloud, day or night, on 5 of the last 7 days.

Our vacation ended just before the forecast 44 degrees hit. 37 degrees was the highest we saw (10 am on the Thursday before we flew home!).

Once I've downloaded the other pics from my Canon SD card, I'll add them to this library. 'Til then, enjoy:

Water-blue sunset

No Terry or Julie. No Ray Davies. No Waterloo Station. But, hey - this is Tipton.

Just one of about 50 pictures I took of last night's incredible sunset at the bus stop and more still in West Bromwich.

Working on a little album to share with this. Breathtaking.

If it doesn't deliver leads, your #social strategy is FUBAR
- but why is conversion so hard?

Great article here by +Adam Houlahan, with an in depth delve into social media #strategy for the small business.

We should be on the ball with our efforts. But sometimes, yeah: business and paying the bills comes first.

The key to success? Work #SMART and hard, with emphasis on the former.

How to add people on Google+ to Circles in 5 quick steps
- (other than the default "Following" Circle)

Last week, +Peter Strempel hosted a vibrant conversation about Google+ Strategy: https://goo.gl/dA2B7B

The conversation discussed many elements of using G+ - some present, others embedded in the UI - not least the use of Circles.

Way back when, Circles were the backbone of the Google+ experience.

Since getting back on G+ with earnest, it's struck me (and many other stalwarts with whom I've rekindled the conversation) that Circles are so inconspicuous that new users may not even know of their existence.

Yes, really!

Yes, really!

Confirmation of how effectual G+ was at promoting circles came when Topics were launched last week, which we discussed right here in the community with +CircleCount: https://goo.gl/hZaK69

There are many other features that pioneering Google+ers rue the disappearance of. Being able to add circle streams to G+ navigation is one of those for me.

This post isn't about that slew of lost features (visit Peter's post, linked above, for the full detail).

No, this post's intent is to show people how/that they can add people to circles in five easy steps.

It's explained in a 5-shot gif, which I made in +GIMP (+Google Photos doesn't give you the option to loop your animation just once).

It shows how I added a G+er to a circle right from the notification pop-up (Mr Jingles) whence I was commenting on that very post.

So, yeah; the GIF goes around once, so just hit play ► again to replay it (nb - ► probably opens in a new window, depending on how you're viewing this post).

Here's what "Google+ Hover Follow numbered GIF" represents in five steps if you can't get the GIF to play:

1. Hover over a commentator's name and hit Follow…
…if you already follow the person or are on their profile page, go straight to 2.)
2. Hit the 'Following' text-cum-button;
3. The Circles pop-up will, mm, pop up, showing your existing Circles;
4. Choose the circle(s) into which you want to place the G+er…
…untick/uncheck 'Following' if you want to remove them from the default circle;
5. You're done, and can see the number of circles you have them instantly.

ta-dah!

Once you've started putting people into relevant circles, you can customise the way you view G+.

Topics, Collections and Communities are great for following specific topics and industries.

But Google+ is so much more than industry-focused marketing. Personally, I got closer to people by following them in their entirety rather than a topic in which they're interested back in the day.

This is social media, don't forget. Google+ has a heart. Circles represent its vital organs. They're not dead yet, if we can just inject a bit of blood into them…

If you ever wanted confirmation of topicality's importance to your organic search efforts…

G+ announces Topics - +CircleCount adds the new feature to its dashboard

Back on +Yifat Cohen's share of this content, I echoed what many have alluded since me getting back on here:
Circles feature less and less as a usability feature of Google+.

Moreover, I'd contend that those newer to the platform know little of Circles' existence at all, let alone how to use them.

To me, Google+'s release of Topics, to go along with Collections and Communities, only confirms Circles' demise.

On another note, we've known that topicality - at page and site level - is an evermore important key to ranking for specific search terms.

You need to prove #SocialMedia ROI - htf do you do that?

Great find from +Sarah Parker - The top 10 social media #metrics to help prove client #ROI from +Social Media Today.

"Your goals might include:
• Driving traffic to your website
• Generating buzz about your brand
• Increasing your network of followers and advocates
• Finding leads and making sales

"You may have other goals entirely.

"It’s key to figure this out for your brand, so you’re able to assess whether your social media marketing efforts are delivering in alignment with your strategic goals."

Over to you
What part does strategy play in your social media campaign?

Where does that campaign fit in line with your business goals (growth, brand awareness, promotion, direct sales)?

One thing's clear: you can't do social media just for the sake of fulfilling an industry expectation. You must make social about you and, perhaps more importantly, your customers.

Before you even begin posting, you must decide on the message you want to convey on social and the tone you're going to use.

One size does not fit all. You can't post the same social snippet to all media platforms. The content introduction you share to +LinkedIn will differ entirely from your +Pinterest or +Instagram post.

All audiences may find relevance in your content. Your USP may appeal to users from the social sphere. But how you get them to that content will differ from platform to platform.

Play to your strengths. Be natural. Add value. Enjoy »

Mastodon - a #HowTo Guide based on a live 3-week test usage case

Tips and tricks for those, like me, trying to understand the new tech-based social media platform: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s245/sh/47031fec-75f2-4141-87fb-95fb7124b3e4/d29d16302ade86472cd554295e43cd7a

I'm still trying to get my head around #Mastodon (the new social media platform, not the band). Trying to find a how-to guide in English has been a tough ask.

Lucky for me, I bumped into Ninah Marie (her handle is in the guide).

She'd written up her experience based on her first three weeks on the platform in her native Dutch.

Lucky for me (again), I've got +Google Chrome and +Evernote, so I translated the page based on Chrome's prompt and 'clipped' the translated page using Evernote's chrome 'web clipper' extension.

The guide (Evernote shard link, above) is best viewed in presentation mode for easy reading.

Feel free to clip the note to your own Evernote account. There's quite a bit to get through, so may make for a very decent #SundayRead - enjoy!

Why we have to take a hard line on spam posts

It's great that so many people want to share their services with Google+.

The problem? Everyone wants to share their content, with multiple communities, regardless of them having never engaged a minute in those communities beforehand.

The first thing new community users must ask themselves is this:
"Would I buy something from someone who I know nothing about, who's only outreach has been to post a link to their product or service?"

It's highly doubtful.

Yes, we do have a category called "Freelancer Services", into which you can post your offer, product or service.

But you'll find a much better response rate to your post if you take the time and effort to engage with other members first.

When you do post a link, make sure you're addressing the community, not a random passer by.

Make your introduction unique. Highlight the benefits that our community members will get by visiting the page you're linking to.

If your service doesn't fit within the community, don't post it. 'Discussion' isn't a default community if your content doesn't fit anywhere else.

If it doesn't belong in a category, it's likely it doesn't belong in the community.

If you share too much off-topic content, you could get your account suspended as more and more people report your profile as spamming their communities.

Where to look for the best engagement (without getting your account banned)
Instead of mass-posting your content, look for communities likely to engage with your subject matter.

This will involve you putting in work up front. There is no shortcut to building an engaged following.

Don't choose communities based on activity (unless there's no activity, then you're wasting your time) or by member numbers.

It doesn't matter how many people are in a community. If they're not showing interest in the type of content you're posting, you'll get your account banned by moderators if you continually post off-topic content.

Too many, and Google+ will suspend your account.

Look. Our time is precious, yours and mine. Rather than post to everyone, invest time finding the right communities for your message.

There might not be many members in those communities, but your chance of engagement will be much higher with people with shared interests. And conversation and engagement are - after all - what community is about.

Thanks for your time. Now, get the conversation started:___

With the advent of G+ communities, users could now head straight to a community of likeminded folk to engage, share and connect rather than have to scrape the stream for content in which they shared a common interest.

This Social Strategic Networking community is testament to the success of that, mm, social networking strategy.

Further down the line, +Google+ gave us Collections.

Another great move as G+ recognised that we are all individual.

Even with millions of members, it's unlikely that any one of us is expressly interested in everything that someone else chooses to share here.

Food pics? Kittens? Twinkly photos with 'quotes'? Meh!

With Collections, you can just follow/subscribe to the topic of interest to you and ignore the aspect of that followee's social presence for which you have no interest.

Like a community, but with one sole proprietor.

But for all these ways we can connect, learn and grow with each other, what is the point of #Community?

Behind every community - especially big ones like this - there's a spark, an idea.

The way the owners and mods create, connect, moderate and nurture that idea within its confines helps define the community, its goals, standards and what it hopes to achieve.

Those methods also define how people - members or otherwise - perceive that community's strengths/weaknesses, core values and if they want to be a part of that conversation.

Moreover, does that community inspire you to be the [brand behind the] community's advocate in the larger social playground?

That's the million dollar question.

This detailed #Infographic on +Influitive, shared by +Kamal Bennani, hints at what values #B2B brands attribute to communities in 2017.

► What does community mean to you?
► What could G+/we do better to encourage engagement?
► What's missing from your communities that would encourage you to wax lyrical about them outside of their confines?

If you've got time, or better/more important questions/features to you, please feel free to post them up in the comments.

Now is the time
We had a huge success in the week, our share of +Gideon Rosenblatt's "Losing My Patience With Google+" article in the community here (https://goo.gl/kwJLCl).

Our views, supported by Owner +Daniel Imbellino, hopefully added weight to Gideon's poignant article, which itself garnered a hopeful response from +Leo Deegan (on the orginial thread, here: https://goo.gl/iskkur).

While we've got the motivation and perhaps eye of the G+ top brass, please do ask away.

Apart from the endless spam moderation tasks we do in this vibrant community - thanks for your kind understanding, all those I've reached out to in that regard, btw - our goal is to inspire, teach and actively encourage lively engagement.

Look. We can all start a conversation. It's up to other members to respond. Now is as good a time as any, so fire away!

Are You Writing To Your Buyers?
You Should Be

If your goal is to convert new customers or clients through your website then when writing your content, you'll need to make sure you are addressing their needs and concerns above your own.

It's important to strike a balance between communicating your identity and unique value while also answering your visitors questions and offering solutions to their problems or challenges.

+Zara Altair, as a semantic writer, has this down. This article from her, explains these ideas in very helpful detail.

"Keep in mind your buyer's intent in searching for an answer. Aim your writing toward that intent. Whether you are creating text for a web page or writing an article, your intent is to respond to the reader's intent when they arrive."

People crave information. That's predominantly what search engines are for (from a user perspective).

As #WebCopywriters, we must not only get our thoughts across, but also include a way of enticing our readers to take action.

What is the purpose of our content?

Before we commit a single word to digital ink, we must understand what it is we want from the post. Only then can we begin to translate it meaningfully for our readership.

Hello, +Google+/+Google+ Developers - is there anybody there?

With social media marketing, we have a choice.

Most services are free. Our time is not.

The choice, then, is where do we 'spend' our time? It's an important decision.

Like +Gideon Rosenblatt and many other 'end users', we invested a heap of time on Google+ in the early days.

And, it has to be said, so did the developers, none less than +Vic Gundotra who oversaw the platform with a very real presence.

Is this the end (the end of our love)?
- It was so nice in the beginning; we had so much going for us.

Losing My Patience with Google+

Over the last six months or so I have watched as the quality of engagement here on Google+ has steadily declined. I have watched my follower count fluctuate and flatline. I have watched as people I used to engage with quite a bit here have left or dramatically scaled back their investments of time here. And yes, I have seen my own enthusiasm for investing time here wane significantly.

I ask myself why and the answers are never as simple as I would like. In the end though, I have come to the sad conclusion that the real thing that is killing Google+ is just plain bad management.

Lack of Attention
One gets the real sense that many of the people now charged with running Google+ don't really understand what it was that once made this service so good in its early days. Indeed, one gets the sense that few of the people managing the service today even really use Google+. There are a few noteworthy exceptions like +Yonatan Zunger and +Leo Deegan, of course. I once made a circle with some 50+ Googlers who were once active here, and when I click on that stream, well, it feels a lot like a ghost town.

+Bradley Horowitz, the VP in charge of Streams, Photos and Sharing, (which is where Google+ sits within the Google org structure) hasn't posted here on Google+ in half a year.

Oh, and remember +Luke Wroblewski, who used to manage Google+ and would send out all those updates on the redesign? Well, he hasn't posted a single thing here in over 7 weeks (even though @lukew is quite active on Twitter). You know why? I just happened to check his LinkedIn profile, and he's apparently no longer managing Google+. I don't recall seeing any announcement of this change - just a sudden silence from the man perhaps most responsible for the UI makeover of Google+.

Rudderless and Un-resourced
That decision to remake the Google+ UI followed a long string of decisions going back to the separation of Photos and Hangouts, each of which have seriously hurt the service. I know there were probably some good reasons to move to the new, mobile-dominant (as opposed to "mobile-friendly") UI, but the lack of enduser empathy from deprecating all the old functionality really was pretty staggering. Much of it hasn't come back, and much of what has is so stripped down (e.g. Events, community moderation) that it isn't really that usable.

As users, we have been asked to be patient and to have faith in the new strategy. Because I have been such a huge fan of Google+ for so long, that is exactly what I have done. I've been patient. I've believed. Believed that some big, cool fix was coming down the pike that would not only fix all the problems caused by the UI decision, but actually start innovating again with some cool new functionality.

Yes, we got Collections, and they actually are quite useful even if they do need a lot of work still. But that's really about it. It's been a couple years now and the silence is stultifying.

And finally, it hit me:

Maybe this is it. Maybe Google has significantly curtailed its investments in this network. Maybe the management squandered the scarce resources it did have on a redesign that users weren't really even asking for. And maybe, just maybe, what we see right now is pretty much what we're going to get.

User Investments
And this is where I start to get really mad. Like many others here, I have invested a lot of personal time and energy building a following here. Like many of you, I have poured heart and soul into filling this place not just with great content, but also with a sense of community. I could have made those investments in Twitter or Facebook or reddit, but like many of you, I made them here. And now I'm starting to wonder how smart of a decision that was.

All of this is particularly raw right now because I'm starting to play around a bit with the new distributed social network called Mastodon (https://mastodon.technology/@gideonro). It's far from perfect, but one thing that is very different is that it is open source and federated, rather than centrally owned and controlled.

There are lots of implications to this different model. For one, there is lots of competition and innovation in the works because Mastodon sits on top of GNU Social and rests within a "Fediverse" of related, and interoperable, social network platforms. They are working on solutions that make it easy to export your content from one platform to another - to prevent lock-in. Also, there is a lot of visibility on exactly what investments are being made in the platform by various contributors.

More importantly though, there is a very conscious understanding that the value of these networks is only partially the result of the software developers behind these solutions. Just as much of it lies with the end users.

In the end, this is the thing that I am most frustrated about right now with Google+. End users have made this place every bit as much as the coders and product planners behind Google+. This isn't to in any way diminish the importance of those contributions. But what I do find frustrating is the way that Google seems to regularly dismiss the importance, and the real economic and social value, of end user contributions. This was true with Google Reader, and sadly it appears to be true with Google+.

I'm still rooting for Google+ to turn things around, of course. I have a huge soft spot for this place, given all the great learning I've done here with my fellow travelers. But one thing is clear: I'm losing my patience, and I don't think I'm alone. ___Hello, +Google+/+Google+ Developers - is there anybody there?

- It was so nice in the beginning; we had so much going for us.
- We had love, we had each other. Baby, it was marvellous.

As Gideon goes on to explain in this obituaryesque piece, Google+ may just be in its final death throes, the ghost town label at last rising from the grave to claim yet another important Google service, despite its engaged community.

Gideon refers to the death of Google Reader in this piece: an RSS reader that millions of people relied upon to capture the best of the web.

IMHO, Google killed of Reader because it had developed a more effective way to scrape the content we publishers post to the web.

Google+ was a platform that helped Google (now Alphabet Inc.) understand how people interacted on social, enabling them to apply context to their search results.

With the lack of investment (again, measured in time by important stakeholders) Gideon points out here, could it be that Google has no further use for our conversations, our communities and how we engage with each other?

Could be. We know that artificial intelligence is hard at work in search engines, in our devices and on many other social media platforms…
…if only there was any such sign of life from G+ here.

Take it away, Nancy Wilson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ620yHg61M #KeepTheFaith

"If you make the same post multiple times then no one will see it because Google will automatically flag it as spam and report it to moderators! If mods report you further, its game over for you."

We take this stance not out of spite. Nor does it have anything to do with teddies and prams.

Rather, we delete cross-community posts because of the in depth knowledge we've earned over the last six years about how G+ works.

We want to share that knowledge with you and protect you from being labelled a spam bot.

Google+'s spam filters are pretty good. After all, much of the AI technology that's used in Search is deployed here also.

Those algorithms (mostly) pick up on posts you've shared across G+ with little introduction or with the same/a similar snippet you've used elsewhere.

Even if your posts evade Google+'s, we've got our acute manual filters, too.

The fact is, if you share links here with barely a description to offer our members insight into the linked content, it puts us on high alert before even checking your profile.

But check it we will. If we find that you've posted the exact same content to multiple communities, dozens of times you're violating our #CommunityGuidelines.

It's not because we want you to share content solely with us that we place so much store in this rule.

Rather, it's because of the awful UX YOU are giving your followers (and, by default, our community).

What can you do about it?

If you've shared a post elsewhere that you think would also benefit our community, then you can write a bespoke introduction for your share here.

Before composing your intro, think about the title of our Community: +Strategic Social Networking:
• What does that mean to you?
• What does that say about members signed up here?
• How does your share fit the brief?
• What benefit to all stakeholders does your content offer?

When you've considered these questions, make your unique description enticing and informative.

Then, members will read your content without you having to hard sell or expressly promote you or your service, without you having to stress CTAs.

Most of all, outline specifically what benefit to our members the linked content offers.

If there is no benefit and your content doesn't fit the brief (see the categories the community offers before thinking about sharing), then your content probably doesn't belong here.

Why go to all the effort 'just' for this community?

As well as being a community, #StrategicSocialNetworking has its own page.

Through this medium, we share the invaluable content you post here to the page's followers beyond the community, beyond Google+, even (https://twitter.com/itsocialize).

In order for that to happen, your original content has to be unique.

We don't want to spam our followers, just like Google+ and its engaged membership don't want spam on their platform.

And believe someone who's been here since G+ opened its doors to the public, marketers who use Google+ to great effect are protective. They see this platform as theirs and guard it with their digital life.

That said, nor, do I believe, do you want to spam your followers.

So ask yourself this before you start hocking the same content around multiple communities:
"what will users unfamiliar with me see when they look at my profile?"

With limits on the amount of people one can actively follow, influencers here do look at someone's profile before following them.

Of the people whose profiles I've checked who've been guilty of cross-community posting, what I've seen when I take the trip over to their profile isn't pretty.

Here's the thing (and please take this advice in the manner in which its offered to you for free, no charge):
if Google+ users see the same post shared over and over again, they are not going to follow you. Not in a million years.

It's this misguided notion, that "volume wins the race", that explains why most of these profiles are yet to achieve double figures with their follower count, despite often having decent content to share.

The post-til-you-drop strategy might work on other platforms, but not here (either in our community or in the great big playground that is Google+).

Even worse, people whose trust you've worked hard to gain will remove you from their circles, leaving your reputation in tatters.

Now, I know you don't want that

Stop and think about it for a second, from your user perspective.

What would you do if someone you followed posted the same link 20 times, cluttering up your stream?

Yes, you might be posting to different communities.

But those posts, they all show up on your profile.

Moreover, many parties interested in the content you're sharing will be in more than one of the communities to which you're posting that same content.

Would you carry on following that person or business, given the awful UX you're forcing them to endure?

We are COMMUNITY
Everyone in this community is more than welcome to share content here.

But we also expect engagement. As point #5 asks in our guidelines (linked below, if you've missed them): Do NOT post and run!

We are, after all, a community, an engaged and highly effective one if utilised correctly.

We like nothing more than enjoying your content here and amplifying your reach even further than to the almost 150k members to whom you have direct access here.

So, please: don't abuse our community members with spam.

Neither they nor we will tolerate it and I or another mod will remove such content. Repeat offenders will be banned.

We've worked hard to build our community. You, too, have got to put the work in to get traction here on Google+.

There is no shortcut to building an engaged following here.

But you will find that your hard work will be rewarded with a vibrant network. And that's what social media's all about, after all: engaging with people to find a natural audience for your message, whatever that may be.

We all cool? Awesome. Here are our guidelines if you've missed them:___

Why offering a paid course over a free version will increase engagement (and completion)

You get to a point when you realise:
"Whaddayaknow? I know more than [insert influencer name here…] about […and influencer topic here].

"Yet they're up there getting plaudits for acumen I learned so long ago, I'd almost forgotten it."

Yeah, so? Whaddayagonnadoaboutit?

One thing you can do is put down everything you know about [influencer topic] and, you know, begin marketing yourself.

Yep - it's a scary step.

I mean, who are you to think you know enough about anything that someone else will want to pay you for that earned insight?

The first acid test is to join in the conversation. Yep - that conversation that [influencer] started.

But me?

Yes, YOU!

Yep - it's a scary step.

I mean, who are you to think you know enough about anything that someone else will want to pay you for that earned insight?

The first acid test is to join in the conversation. Yep - that conversation that [influencer] started.

But me?

Yes, YOU!

But don't troll!

Your aim isn't to shoot the guy down. It's to start building rapport.

Try and add value to the thread on that thread. Here's why:

The [influencer] has chosen the platform for a reason.

Don't try and take the conversation onto a platform with which you're familiar.

If it's YouTube, the chances are, [influencer] already has an engaged audience there. Likewise Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and, heck, even here on Google+.

You need to be around people who can benefit from what you know so that they can begin to know how valuable your insight is.

Make sense? Cool.

The other benefit of joining the conversation - apart from building rapport and trust - is seeing what the general appreciation of the topic is:

• Does the audience ask many questions that you could answer in your sleep?
• Are other influencers joining in the conversation and getting traction, adding value?
• Does the gulf in knowledge of the general public - wannabe marketers - amaze and astound you?

If you answer yes to those questions, you've found your market.

But don't just go away, put a half-assed course together and try and sell it to everyone. That plan will fall flatter than a pancake on Jif Lemon Day.

Yes, draw up your potential plan, a prospectus for your course.

Use the thread, the original post, to pencil in your ideas, to pinpoint areas upon which you can expand.

Use the comments of influencers and questions from acolytes to plot your course, all the while adding your insight, adding value to the conversation.

But stay engaged. Keep the conversation alive.

Over a short space of time, and by asking the right questions, you'll find more sparks, more answers to questions that your network (yes, your network) keep asking.

And, yes - you will see the light bulb come on, experience that Eureka moment.

Now, if your industry knowledge is vast, don't try and fit in everything you know in one course.

Stick to the core values of your course to remain relevant, adding on directly related branches to offer a masterclass.

Indirect aspects can form an ultimate version of your course (see +Shaw Academy's marketing strategy for proof of that particular pudding).

When you have a cohesive strategy and an engaged audience, then and only then should you pull the trigger.

Just don't ever think that what you've put together doesn't have a price. Nor that the people you inspire - directly or passively - won't fork out for a slice of what you know.

So, how much is what you know really worth?

"*Here’s the thing:* No one really knows the value of a course. There’s no hard and fast rule that a course of 8 modules with 4 videos each should be X amount of dollars."

That quote's taken from +ConvertKit's article (no affiliation) and underlines the marketer's dilemma.

But don't fear. Here's pretty much everything you need to know about pricing your online course (and a few hints as to what you should include for the money). Enjoy »

I digress. Gennaro's plugin has just taken almost every concept in the #SemanticXRay (and some of his own) and built them into this nifty little dashboard add-on.

The only concept the plugin doesn't cover is the Readability aspect. But that's where the skill of the writer comes in.

Yet Readability is still pertinent. The clearer your entities stand out in the copy, the better #WordLift will work for you, nailing both your content's semantic markup and alignment.

Interested? You ought to be.

Any questions, just fire them at me.

Right now, I'm getting ready for my webinar with +Shaw Academy But I will try to get back online later (if we don't overrun too much again ;-))

In the meantime, dive in. This product will astound you (really) »»___

GIF editor - Panic Over - Phew!

Making a GIF for a Christmas marketing drive, went to upload to Hootsuite and got:

The air was blue!

Had I really got to extract each image and resize them, all 17 layers?

There's probably a quick way to do it in +GIMP, the software in which I created the GIF, but for a novice like me, GIMP is a touch on the complicated side.

I could have resized all the layers with the RIOT plug-in in #Irfanview, but that's like a mammoth task.

All that considered, I ran a quick Google search for "how to shrink GIF file size" (mostly auto-suggested based on my original term; more on that later) and wallop!

There we go - #EZgif.com had the answer. Upload the GIF in its entirety, choose how you want to resample your base file and job done.

We take from nature, its meat, its fruit, its vegetables. Anything organic, with or without nutritional value, we eat.

Not just to satisfy hunger. We consume in huge, often unimaginable volumes.

Greed, comfort eating, just because we can - they're not valid reasons for shoveling down excessive carbs, fat and protein that our bodies can do nothing with other than store, in such large volumes.

All of this goodness we are taking from the very soil beneath our feet, the crops from the fields, the low hanging fruit from the trees…
…and storing it as fat around our waists.

We need to move it, move it
As tech makes our lives easier - from a physical, dynamic perspective - it serves to sustain and grow the millions of obese people that our race now supports.

And why should we care? Because obese people, they're hogging that energy.

Fat people: they take, they eat, they store, depriving the Earth of the energy it needs to remain balanced, stable.

The Earth, Mother Nature, needs the fat, fat fatties to start shaking their pudgy butts and converting the millions and millions of tons of latent energy onto which they're selfishly holding.

I know. Some people cannot help their weight.

Conditions that require steroids to give their sufferers respite or insulin that regulates sugar levels in Type 1 Diabetics have the knock-on effect of adding weight, at least until we find another way to treat those conditions.

But those sufferers account for only a tiny element of the masses of obese people wobbling on the surface of our planet.

Are the ice caps really melting?

Or is the land sinking beneath the new, uneven distribution of its weight as anything with a nutritional value (or not) is dug up, farmed or picked, then transported and finally left to settle in a gastric system far, far away?

But you're a mod. You can't like Iron Maiden!

- Really? Tell it to Eddie ;)

Anyone use +Musicbee? It's an amazin' free music organiser.

Add an external plug-in and you also convert heavy files (like wav) to mp3 to save disc space, too.

But what I really like is the "Now Playing" tab. As well as displaying the lyrics of the title you're playing, the software 'app' also rotates images of the artist.

In the case of +Iron Maiden, tonight MusicBee presented me with a few of Eddie's incarnations over the years (attached).

My favourite (not here) will always be the cover to 7" of Run to the Hills: Eddie fighting the devil, spurred on by a host of supernatural creatures.

You just have to appreciate good rock music when you hear it, irrespective of your allegiances.... more »

Run to the Hills - even if you're on a Lambretta

When I was 11 years old, I walked into Woolworths in Bilston - fully clad in a parka declaring my love of all things mod - and bought Run to the Hills.

The 7" single set me back about £1.09/£1.29, something like that.

Glad I wasn't so blind as to pigeonhole myself later in life. While I'll always be a mod at heart, there's too much Maiden, Sabbath, Mötorhead, Zeppelin, Cream, Nirvana and Hendrix in my collection to ever make mod '[The] Way of Life' it was back in the late 70s/early 80s.

Loved it then, love it now…
…whether Eddie's watching or not.___

What's one thing that's different between online freelancing and other ways of growing your brand?

#Online, each client leaves a review of your work. Anyone can see that review on your profile.

As a freelancer, you can’t control which reviews and ratings potential clients see.

But when you do it right, that feedback is solid gold.

It's not all about the money (yes, really)

As a comparison, Amazon marketers cry out for positive reviews. Customer feedback stands testament to their product and service.

At first, you may not get the big bucks you're used to as a newbie freelancer to a specific platform.

I can't recall the author, but with #digital now so prevalent in the way we work today and in the future, you can only imagine digital freelance platforms will grow in usefulness in time.

Future prosperity is a marathon, not a sprint

Building a portfolio of solid #freelancing reviews is a foundation for that future.

Great insight from +Daniel Futerman in this article that we can all take forward with us as we grow our brand and reputation online.

Introducing: West Bromwich
- (don't mention The Wolves #WolvesAyWe)

Coming back from physio this evening and had a wonderful surprise: everyone was happy: Poles, Russians, Croatians, Jamaicans, Indians - everyone smiling.

Our little town is so cosmopolitan - rich and diverse cultures all going about our lives, putting in and taking from the same melting pot.

It was really quite refreshing.

So much so, that I thought I'd capture the vibrant mood of Sandwell's biggest township.

Christmas - it perks everything up. Almost everyone said hi! - or their version of its interpretation from their native language to English.

It's been unprecedentedly warm here this week, which no doubt added to today's happy atmos. But my post-physio knees are telling me there's cold and damp on the way - and lots of it.... more »

How to make a jewellery wrap from scratch

You might have noticed a lack of posting from my account this year. Two reasons:

1. - I've had three in-hospital procedures and so much physio I should be ripped like Daniel Craig (but I'm so not);
2. - around medical treatment, I'm actually doing stuff in the real world.

Yep, I'm still writing. But physios have put a cap on the time I should spend at the PC, so I'm finding stuff to do offline.

My first love - the mod movement - has bitten me ever since my wife took me to see Paul Weller for my birthday last year.

But the price of clothing even at basic entry level is so high, it's way beyond the budget of a part-time wordsmith.

So, I've taken up my second love, sewing.

So, I've taken up my second love, sewing.

My good lady wife bought me a sewing machine for my birthday this year, which is just wow!

It's a bit like riding a bike. Although the new machines make the terrain a little more difficult to conquer as I'm settling back into the saddle.

To date, I've rescued around 50 shirts that could be the perfect gift for a mod on a budget with a little tinkering with the stitching, cut and collars.

I'm not alone with the creative bug. My wife has complete jewellery making classes this year and she's really going for it.

I've bought her a fair chunk of material for Christmas and so, to make the most of my newfound passion for sewing and turn the bare material I've bought her into a condition worthy of gifting, I'm going to make the wraps into which they'll fit.

This tutorial is just so spot on for what I was looking for, I just had to share it. Well done #AfricanKelli for putting this amazing step-by-step guide together (and Google for knowing what I wanted with a quite ambiguous search, even though I used the Anglicised 'jewellery').

Off to the shops to get my materials, then. Onwards and upwards, gang. Have a great weekend. ☺___

My Ever Changing Moods

Daylight turns to moonlight
and I'm at my best.
Praising the way it all works,
and gazing upon the rest.

The cool before the warm,
the calm after the storm;
ooh, the cool before the warm,
the calm after the storm;

I wish to stay forever,
letting this be my food.
Oh, but I'm caught up in a whirlwind and my ever changing moods.

From the Album, Café Bleu.

If there's an album I can call a 'Soundtrack to my Youth' (besides Quadr♂phenia, of course), then Café Bleu is it.

When The Jam announced they were splitting in 1982, it signaled the beginning of the end of the #79Revival.

Me and my m♂d muckers were, well, no other word for it: distraught.

But come 1983, and Paul Weller's next venture, The Style Council, was pumping out a new sound.

It's fair to say that few mods were won over by the subtler sounds of Weller, 'Merton' Mick Talbot and Steve White.

The vast majority left the mod movement and moved on to their next thing (I dunno, Wham!, Frankie Goes To Hollywood or Spandau Ballet 0_o).

But a few of us remained faithful. And in retrospect, Weller's lyrics alone stand the test of time. Playing the earworm when I got back, the simple beauty of the track almost had me welling up (hence this long post of patronage).

When I saw this (Just Past) Sunset image today, twilight coming to devour the remainder of the day, I was reminded of the first stanza of the first of only two singles released off that album, My Ever Changing Moods.

There's another story about the single, a party in Willenhall and my childhood sweetheart, but that's for another day.

In the meantime, here's the full track (in G Drive), My Ever Changing Moods, by The Style Council, as per Café Bleu.

Apologies in advance for the crackles, but the mp3's converted from my album, which is now 32½ years old - just, wow. Please, enjoy: https://goo.gl/PKiAeI

There are few things more terrifying than sleep paralysis

Waking in your sleep, unable to move a muscle and with an unnamed terror heading for you?

Add in that you're trying to breathe through a CPAP mask - damn, that's some scary shit. New pants, please.

Great article for those who don't know what #SleepParalysis  is.

Don't worry if you don't. You're not alone.

My otherwise amazing GP has asked me to investigate it myself as it's not something they tend to learn at med school.

Adding #SleepApnoea  into the equation doesn't make matters easier, it has to be said. New learning, please ☺
