+Matt Granz with a great capture of the view from my neighborhood!

San Francisco, Holiday Style

I love San Francisco, and especially at this time of year as it, in celebration of the oncoming holidays, lights itself up in grand majestic splendor.
I just happened to be passing through and wanted to try for an intimate of the downtown, but parking was exceedingly sparse. I must have drove all around Russian Hill for well over 46 minutes. I could have left my car at a local parking garage but for thirty dollars flat rate??? No way!!! Finally I found a small street hidden away where there was a spot. It was a few blocks from where I wanted to shoot from, but as I got out of my vehicle I noticed I had a great view right where I was. I love it when things come together this way.
So here is a little seasonal gift from me to all of you.
Cheers!

+Trey Ratcliff with a masterpiece photo.

10 Billion Views on Google - Thanks! - 10 Free Video Tutorials!

I am giving away 10 free HDR Tutorial videos to thank everyone for the 10 billion views - how insane - thank YOU so much! Just leave a comment below if you want to win http://goo.gl/Fl8gQz - I'll pick winners in about 24 hours!

For this special day, I am uploading this new photo (19,000 pixels across!) that I just captured in the sweet spot in the northern bits of the Guangxi province, just to the south of the Guizhou and Hunan provinces of China. 桂林市 - 广西. I am standing on top of another spire (just like the ones you see!), and it was incredibly difficult, to say the least. Here's the story.

It was a muggy day, the sort where you feel your t-shirt sticking to you before you even realize it. We hired some local guides, who then hired some even more local guides to help show the way to the spire we wanted to ascend. Boy was it grueling! Jagged rocks, thorny bushes, all-fours most of the way. Sometimes the only thing to hold onto was a thorn bush or a glassy-evil-jaded rock. At the top, I looked down to see all kinds of grisly lacerations... but gathered my wits to get this photo!  My bff +Tom Anderson was very smart and wore more clothes than me to keep his skin baby-smooth. This photo is a panorama, which I don't normally do, but the Dr. Seuss countryside there is so vast and overpowering, it was kind of the only way to bring it all together.

I think I'll go back here again... if you wanna come along, sign up for our newsletter at http://www.StuckInCustoms.com/news — or if you wanna go on your own, I'll take time to detail everything there including how to contact some local guides so you can find the same spot.

Anyway, thanks again for all the views and I'm happy you enjoy them so much here and other places on the interwebs... I used to do this back in the day when it was just me and my mom that would look at the photos... she still comes every day — hi mom! And don't worry, I got down safe and I'm putting aloe vera on the wounds just like you taught me! :) ___+Trey Ratcliff with a masterpiece photo.

+Matt Granz with a great story and awesome shot!

Loche, the Smoke Monster

It took a lot to get to this storm.  My team and I had to cut through two other storms, one so severe that we could not see in front of our vehicle, as the roadways beside us turned into rivers.  This was what chasers call a "core punch" going through the heaviest part of a supercell downburst, which can at times be mingled with large hail.  Lucky for us, the hail did not arrive, and after about 45 minutes of traveling through white knuckled, tension filled driving we were met by a mass of unstable air.  We continued driving for some time chasing after a wall of rotation on our radar, and then suddenly, we saw something that looked like the sky meeting the ground.  This slow moving beast was lit green at the start, and as time went on turned a teal color and finally at the end a royal blue.  The blue in the cloud mass is being caused by large hail in the core being kept aloft by warm updrafts.  The radar was saying that the hail was somewhere around 3" in diameter.  We met someone the next day who was under the core of this shelf cloud.  His window of the car he was driving was obliterated. The shelf cloud you see here had a rotation signature on it.  Probably right where you see that dark bump near the front.  We carefully monitored this storm, and scooted out of the way as it started to overtake us.  It was a rich reward for a lot of chance taking and nerve wracking moments.___+Matt Granz with a great story and awesome shot!

Google announced several new AutoAwesome features today for Google+. Anyone who takes photos will love these!

Great write up from +Mike Elgan.

Google's Magic Picture Machine goes beyond science fiction.

Science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke said that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." But even Clarke never envisioned Google’s Magic Picture Machine.

The new Google+ photo and video features announced today by +Vic Gundotra are obviously an incredible benefit to users, unlike anything else out there.

But can we take a moment to marvel at the technology behind it?

Let's start with a magic trick:

I was fully behind Google+ before I read this article, then I learned about a few more cool features I didn't know about. Well written, +Mike Elgan!

Why Google+ is the best social anything ever.

Google + is my favorite site on the Internet: http://goo.gl/aZECeb

I probably spend between six and 12 hours per day actively using it. I’m a certifiable Google+ nut and have been for two years.

But why?

The answer to that question is self-evident to anyone who really uses the site. Critics tend to be dabblers, non-users or people with some gripe against Google. To use Google+ is to love Google+, for most people.

In my first column for aNewDomain, I tell why I'm such a Google+ fan:

Love this shot from +Darren Neupert!

Misty Mountain || Mt. Rainier, WA

To create this image, I combined 5 bracketed exposures from Lightroom using Photomatix's "merge to 32 bit" plugin.  The resulting 32 bit image is then automatically imported back into Lightroom for further processing.  It's HDR but without traditional tonemapping that can lead to bad halos and a lot of cleanup work.  I believe I also hit it with Topaz's new Restyle plugin.  I think.  ;)  It's been a long day.
