There is a huge literature from the 90's on OO metrics. We shoud not reopen the debate unless there are really new original ideas emerging.

Just so you understand whether the next generation of CS people is in good hands:

Emin Borandağ of Celal Bayar Üniversitesi posted a request on ResearchGate (https://www.researchgate.net/post/How_can_I_determine_the_object-oriented_metrics_from_a_software) asking how he could determine "the object oriented metrics from a software? [sic]". He got 2 crisp answers, one from David Rine at George Mason and Bruno Carreiro da Silva at Universidade Federal da Bahia. They were careful to point out that the metrics one obtains are very much a function of the programming language.

I found it interesting that no one pointed out that metrics depend highly on the domain (telecom objects tend to have lower cohesion than those in an everyday system) or on so many other factors that matter.

But the kicker is that no one asked him what he was going to use the metrics for. Nonetheless they were able to point out lots and lots of tools and metrics that he could use.

I interjected with a challenge, asking how they could provide answers without knowing what question they were answering. And then, the kicker: Emin Borandağ warmly thanked the others. My drive towards an honest answer was not appreciated.

Some things don't need a parody: they're their own parody.

I just thought that it would be a cool idea that if one needed some public argumentation to substantiate a direction one wanted to take, you could ask a question about it in a public forum and then round up a few buddies to answer, and then go show it to your boss. Hey, I've seen the inside of academia and even reputable academia works that way. I can't say anything about Celal Bayar Üniversitesi. Just can't.___There is a huge literature from the 90's on OO metrics. We shoud not reopen the debate unless there are really new original ideas emerging.

Remembering today Alexander Grothendieck. He was the greatest mathematician of this century, but also had a tremendous vision on the evolution of the society.

I started studying advanced algebra at UBO, Brest in the late sixties and was already impressed by the elegance of his theories.

But I was even much more impressed later by a conference he gave to us in the early 70's in Rennes. He described with incredible details the direction where the society was leading. At a time when the expression "global warming" was far from being invented, he pointed out the "no future" direction taken by all the politicians.

This was at a time nearly no one was yet talking about ecology.  I am not even sure Yves Cochet from EELV attended the meeting, but I may be wrong. (He was assistant-professor in mathematics at INSA-Rennes at this period).

An approximate translation of this passage written by Grothendieck:

Witches Kitchen 1971. Riemann-Roch Theorem: The final cry: The diagram is commutative! To give an approximate sense to the statement about f: X → Y, I had to abuse the listeners' patience for almost two hours. Black on white (in Springer lecture notes) it probably takes about 400, 500 pages. A gripping example of how our thirst for knowledge and discovery indulges itself more and more in a logical delirium far removed from life, while life itself is going to Hell in a thousand ways and is under the threat of final extermination. High time to change our course!

(via +Ravi Vakil http://math.stanford.edu/~vakil/11-245/)___Remembering today Alexander Grothendieck. He was the greatest mathematician of this century, but also had a tremendous vision on the evolution of the society.

To most of us at the time, the talk about the evolution of the country was grossly exaggerated. He was describing a situation where groups of young people would start standing up against the destruction of agricultural land and the waste of natural resources with the generalization of cars and planes.

Sometimes I have the same feeling of exaggeration of the young people when I bike over the fields of Notre Dame des Landes near Nantes,  where the politicians (PS & UMP mainly) are planning to build a useless and stupid new airport for mere reasons of political prestige. But when I look at the people defending the ZAD of NDDL, I cannot help thinking about the great vision of Alexander Grothendieck.

And also obviously I can't help thinking that Alexander Grothendieck is now discussing with Rémi Fraisse about the foolish projects of french politicians.
