On a grey dawn I watched this reddish egret do his predatory dance as he stirred up the waters with his antics....pausing only every few seconds to strike at a fish.
His movements reminded me of an avenger appearing out of the mist and wreaking havoc wherever he went...

We were driving through Grand Teton National Park and saw this wild fox trotting down the walking path beside the road.....I slammed on the brakes and jumped out as he continued trotting.
Then a deer jumped out of the bushes and ran across the path and the fox stopped for just a split second and I was able to capture him as you see here...

Ever since I met your daughter and first saw this photo, the same thought crossed my mind again and again.
How did you do it, Sgt. Brooks?
How did you get back into that B-17 Flying Fortress seventeen more times after that first flight?
The first time was frightful - but you didn't know that first time how it felt to have a Luftwaffe Messerschmidt blasting away at your waist gunner's side window with nothing between the two of you besides a thin layer of easily penetrated steel. You didn't know that first time how it felt to be at a warm base in England at 3:30 a.m. and then be fighting for your life in the skies over Europe six hours later.
You knew how to shoot, but you'd never had to defend yourself before with a machine gun against scores of enemy planes that were diving from all directions and were close enough for you... more »

Some mornings are made for photography...this was one of them.

When this young bull bison raised his head and stared straight at me earlier this year, I felt a instinctive rush of fear inside my being...
I knew it was very unusual for him to raise his head above his shoulders and I also knew that this move was precursor to a charge.
My heart was pounding as I tried to get a focus lock on the eyes while my brain was telling me to get behind the car.
He was about twenty five yards away and he was looking me straight in the eye.
I felt scared. I felt alive. I felt the fear of generations of genes inside me that had laid dormant all these years.
One second, calm. The next second, fear on a primal stage that touched every nerve ending. Fight or flight.

Were you there for a minute with me?
I hope so.
That's the magic of photography. It can transport you... more »

Always tough to get focus lock with shallow depth of field. But as the saying goes - sometimes a blind hog finds an acorn.
