Congratulations +Laszlo Bock on the official launch of Work Rules!  It has my vote for "Business Book of the Year."  :)

Get it at www.workrules.net #workrules

We spend more time working than doing anything else in life. Yet for too many people, the experience of work is dehumanizing, demoralizing, and overly focused on the bottom line.

I don’t think it has to be this way, and I’m willing to bet you don’t either.

At Google, we’ve learned a ton about what makes for an enjoyable and productive workplace. We’re not alone – lots of other companies, ranging from Bangladeshi garment factories to Brooklyn delis, as well as academic researchers, have learned the same simple truth: there are straightforward things we can do to make work better.

My new book, Work Rules!, is an attempt to bring this together and offer you practical tools to improve work, no matter what you do.

If that resonates with you, I invite you to grab a book and join me on this journey toward better work for all. Copies are now available at www.workrules.net #workrules #google #work #hr___Congratulations +Laszlo Bock on the official launch of Work Rules!  It has my vote for "Business Book of the Year."  :)

Very well done, +Laszlo Bock! (p.s. I recommend [Add to circles])

WORK RULES! named as Inc. "best business book" of 2015, and great quote:

"Larry and Sergey had ambitions beyond developing a great search engine. They started out knowing how they wanted people to be treated. Quixotic as it sounds, they both wanted to create a company where work was meaningful, employees felt free to pursue their passions, and people and their families were cared for. Many of the most meaningful, beloved, and effective people practices at Google sprouted from seeds planted by Larry and Sergey. Our weekly all-employee meetings started when 'all' of us amounted to just a handful of people, and continue to this day even though we're now the size of a respectable city."

+Lorne Rosenfield is on the leading edge of surgery; his use of Google Glass in plastic surgery is a good example of the "Glass at Work" direction where Glass is being used by leading users and developers for interesting and important enterprise, medical, and mobile worker applications --  https://developers.google.com/glass/distribute/glass-at-work.

And, I think Lorne's brother-in-law (and my friend), +Jonathan Rosenberg, is clearly overdue for a rhytidectomy after his many dog-years at Google (chronicled in his recent book, "How Google Works"). ;)

My brother in law +Lorne Rosenfield M.D. is an excellent plastic surgeon. If the addition of Google glass can lead him to "perfection" as this article suggests it might be time for me to consider a procedure(suggestions?)!!!

Dr. Rosenfield has already proven to push the learning curve with technology by performing the first plastic surgery procedure with Glass - an eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) performed in combination with a facelift procedure. He is not only helping patients but helping Google improve the technology by shedding light on the challenges for future refinement, including the limited resolution of the video camera, technical difficulties in streaming from an operating room and the need for the surgeon to keep the head in a fixed position.

Exciting announcement this morning from +Arthur Levinson on the progress with Calico Labs (http://www.calicolabs.com/) and a partnership with Abbvie (http://www.abbvie.com/).

Last fall, Larry Page and I announced Calico, a new company designed to take the long-term view on aging and illness.  Our goal is to make progress on a very basic challenge: how to help people stay healthier for longer.

Since then Calico has hired some extraordinary talent in the fields of medicine, drug development and molecular biology and genetics.  We’re excited by our work and want to ensure we can bring our ideas to people in need as quickly as possible.  So today, we’ve announced that we’ll be teaming up with AbbVie in a major way to turbocharge our efforts.

Calico and AbbVie share a common goal: discovering, developing and bringing to market therapies for age-related diseases, including for neurodegeneration and cancer.  Calico will set up a world-class research and development facility in the San Francisco Bay Area, where we will explore the basic biology of aging and develop new medicines for patients with aging-related diseases.  AbbVie will use its deep pharmaceutical expertise to provide scientific and clinical development support and its commercial expertise to ensure these therapies are widely available.

You can read our press release below for more details about our partnership, which will combine the best of Calico’s research with the best of AbbVie’s development. We have progressed much faster with Calico than I ever imagined when we started a year ago, and I am tremendously excited about what lies ahead.

Very excited to see data science and life science working together -- with Google joining the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, and contributing technology (API spec, preview implementation, sample code) to the community.

Google joins the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health
Posted by +Jonathan Bingham, Product Manager

Generating research data is easier than ever before, but interpreting and analyzing it is still hard, and getting harder as the volume increases. This is especially true of genomics. Sequencing the whole genome of a single person produces more than 100 gigabytes of raw data, and a million genomes will add up to more than 100 petabytes. In 2003, the Human Genome Project (http://goo.gl/rDUSr7) completed after 15 years and $3 billion. Today, it takes closer to one day and $1,000 to sequence a human genome.

This abundance of new information carries great potential for research and human health -- and requires new standards, policies and technology. That’s why Google has joined the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (http://goo.gl/jsjtbV). The Alliance is an international effort to develop harmonized approaches to enable responsible, secure, and effective sharing of genomic and clinical information in the cloud with the research and healthcare communities, meeting the highest standards of ethics and privacy. Members of the Global Alliance include leading technology, healthcare, research, and disease advocacy organizations from around the world.

We are honored to be part of the community, working together to refine the technology and evolve the ecosystem, and aligning with appropriate standards as they arise. To learn more, visit the Google Research Blog linked below.___Very excited to see data science and life science working together -- with Google joining the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, and contributing technology (API spec, preview implementation, sample code) to the community.

How to 'move-to-Android' tips, from +Eric Schmidt...

Eric’s Guide: Converting to Android from iPhone

Many of my iPhone friends are converting to Android.  The latest high-end phones from Samsung (Galaxy S4), Motorola (Verizon Droid Ultra) and the Nexus 5 (for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) have better screens, are faster, and have a much more intuitive interface.  They are a great Christmas present to an iPhone user!

Here are the steps I recommend to make this switch.  Like the people who moved from PCs to Macs and never switched back, you will switch from iPhone to Android and never switch back as everything will be in the cloud, backed up, and there are so many choices for you.  80% of the world, in the latest surveys, agrees on Android.

1. Set up the Android phone
a) Power on, connect to WiFi, login with your personal Gmail account, and download in the Google Play Store all the applications you normally use (for example, Instagram).
b) Make sure the software on the Android phone is updated to the latest version (i.e. 4.3 or 4.4). You should get a notification if there are software updates.
c) If you are using AT&T, download the Visual Voicemail app from the Play Store.
d) You can add additional Gmail accounts now or later.

At this point, you should see all your Gmail, and be able to use any apps and they should work well.  Be sure to verify this.

2. Update your iPhone or iPad
a) Power on, connect to WiFi, make sure your Gmail is logged in, and upgrade all of the iPhone software to the latest iPhone software release (typically iOS 7+).
b) Check that you are using iCloud to back up contacts.  Go to iCloud (in Settings) and enable that for contacts (“on”).  If not using iCloud, go ahead and sign up for it.  (The latest Mavericks requires the use of iCloud for Mac users if you want to transfer contacts.)
c) For your personal Gmail account, in Settings/Mail, turn on sync for contacts.  In the latest iOS, this should sync your Gmail contacts and iPhone contacts.
d) In Settings/Messages, turn “off” iMessage, as that messenger is an iPhone-to-iPhone messenger and if its on your iPhone friends texts won’t make it to Android.  Your iPhone will still use SMS messaging to reach your friends if you use the iPhone after this change.
e) Make sure your iPhone is fully synced to the Mac iTunes.  Your photos and music should all be backed up on your Mac when this is done. Go ahead and verify that on the Mac and the iPhone.

At this point you should see all your Gmail, have your apps, and have your contacts in the Android phone.  If the contacts are not in the Android phone, manually download the contacts as follows on your Mac:
a) Go to apple.com/icloud, login with your Apple ID, and click on contacts
b) In the lower-left corner, click on the wheel, and “select all” the contacts and “export” the vCard into a vCard file (in Downloads).
c) In a browser, go to gmail.com, click on the Mail button and select “Contacts”.  You should see a list of your Gmail contacts.  Import the vCard file into Gmail/contacts using the “Import contacts” command and it should have manually added your contacts.  Delete any duplicates or use the “More / Find & merge duplicates” function.

At this point you have your Gmail, apps and contacts on the new phone.  Also verify this.

3. On your Mac, connect your music to Google:
Download Google Music Manager onto the Mac, and run it.  Music Manager will upload your iTunes music to the cloud.  The standard version is free and handles most iTunes libraries.  You will need to sign up for Google Wallet and give your credit card information, but it’s free.  Be sure the music is going to your personal Gmail account above. See https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/1075570

With the above complete, you should have your Gmail, apps, contacts, and music all moved over.  Verify this on the Android phone :-)

4. Take the SIM out of the iPhone and insert it into Android.  You may need an adapter (from nano-SIM to micro-SIM), but then reboot the Android and you are all set !  For texting either use the Messenger app in earlier releases or the “Hangouts” app in Android 4.4.

Comments and additions welcome ! Eric

PS. Photos on your iPhone
If you have pictures on your iPhone, you will have to first copy them over to the Mac and then sync the iPhone with iTunes.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083

It’s probably easiest to backup your iPhone photos to the Mac, but not copy the old photos to the Android phone.  New photos you take on the Android phone will automatically be backed up to your photos in the Gmail account (iAuto-Upload is normally enabled) so no action is required.  If the old photos are important, send them to Gmail and download into the Android phone or upload them to Google+.

PPS.  Some general advice

Be sure to use Chrome, not Safari; its safer and better in so many ways.  And it’s free.
https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/

Be sure to use two-factor authentication for your Gmail and Google accounts.  Makes it very hard for someone to break into your Gmail.  Also free.

Good stuff at the intersection of G+ and Offers. Congrats to the Teams on the nice launch!

Offer posts in Google+: Easily save and share offers with your circles

Millions of people follow brands they love on Google+ to keep tabs on them, get the latest news on products, join in on the conversation or simply to be entertained. Many people also engage with businesses to get great deals and discounts. Starting today, we’re making it easier to discover, save and share offers right from Google+.

We’re beginning with a select group of brands like +ZAGAT , +Hello Kitty , +Art.com , +NOOK , +Adafruit Industries  who can now share offers with their followers. If you follow any of these brands, you'll soon see offers from them in your stream.  You can save these offers directly from the post. Once saved, you can use the Google Offers app or simply follow the email confirmation on how to easily redeem the offer online or in-store.

And just like in real life, if you discover a great offer that you want to tell your friends about, you can share the offer post with any of your circles.
