Ray Ortega2,590Podcast award season is here and that means asking your audience for votes, in some cases, constantly asking them. How do you deal with this as a podcaster...as a listener? Are we asking too much or is it a great way to show your support of a show? Beyond awards, we're repeatedly faced with asking our audience for all many different things. We ask for reviews, ratings, feedback, sign-ups, and a whole host of other things that we put into every episode. So how much is too much? Join me (Ray Ortega), +David Jackson, +Nick Seuberling and others TBD to talk discuss the balance between asking your audience to support your show and wearing them out asking for too much. This broadcast will be live at 12pm Eastern time U.S. and the event page you are viewing should adjust the clock for your time zone. The video can be viewed right here on the event page where you currently see the video player. Podcasters' Roundtable - Round 20 - Can You Ask Too Much of Your Audience?2013-11-03 18:00:0059

Ray Ortega2,590We'll be discussing the concept of competition as is applies to podcasters podcasting in the same niche. How much do you share with podcasts in your niche? Do you cross promote their shows? Do you have them as guests on your show or even co-host shows together? Is it possible to share audiences? Do you fear losing your audience to another show in your niche? What steps do you take to prevent this from happening? Do you think it's even necessary to compete? In which situations might it actually be better to be a little competitive or even actively working against another show? +Daniel J. Question of the Day - If you got $5,000 So you've been podcasting for a while, when suddenly someone comes to you and gives you $5k to improve and grow your show. Not really a sponsorship, think of it as an infusion of funding (like a VC would do). The cash has to be invested into the show in some way. What would you do to improve it? Better equipment? Advertise? Boost social media? Pay for some guests?

Question of the Day - Patreon The crowdfund subscription model allows you to get support from fans. Others say it's a big albatross because you have to continually promote it for small returns. Do you use +Patreon to support your #Podcast  ? If so, do you have a tip you can drop to help others succeed?

Issues from Last Week So many of you may know I banned someone from the board. I thought he would be an asset and turned out to cause more issues. I asked him to take time off and he decided to cause further issues, giving me no choice to ban.

Simply put: He threatened me. It wasn't much of a threat because it was trollish (reporting me to Google, etc). I guess he or someone else did that, because I got a message about it. Luckily I have friends in the right places that can vouch for me. But this board was at risk of being pulled down simply because of what happened.

Another person blocked me because of the ban (I believe). He is still on the community, but I cannot see his posts.I sent a feedback point to Google asking how I can moderate a board if the member blocks me. Waiting for a response from that.

Question of the Day - Bitrate In my latest Podertainment article, I talk a little about bitrate. It got me to thinking what the sweet spot is nowadays for this podcast issue. I mentioned I threw away all my music lower than 128 kbps and only get new stuff at 192 kbps and above.

Even though talk-only podcasts are OK at 64 kbps, People have mentioned to me they rather listen to audio that has better quality. Of course we have the phone LTE limitation - you cannot download anything over 100 MB (used to be 20 when iPhone 1 came out). Some countries might have even more stringent limitations. BTW - 128 kbps for an hour equals 56 MB files.

We also have streaming audio standards of 24-56 kbps. Great for when you want the sound of the AM radio...

So what do you run your shows at and why? If lower thatn 128 kbps, have you thought of bumping it up?

I am officially recommending this mixer for the high-end podcaster in 2016. Why? Simply because it has everything a podcaster needs and more. If you were asked to record a 4 person panel for a podcast, if you needed to cover a show like CES or NAB, if you needed to even record a small band - this can do it all and is the size of a laptop. It can also be controlled via smartphone or tablet. I'm planning on replacing my gear this year with this console. Simple as that. #geekout

Question of the Day - If You Podcast in a Snowstorm... For the last couple weeks people have been talking about this storm of the year for the mid-west. People have been bearing down, but now 3 feet of snow is going to be less than one. To prepare for snow removal, I got all my podcast stuff done yesterday. So today is a free day to catch up on stuff.

When you have a major storm approaching on the day of your show (rain, snow, etc), do you continue on as normal or do you plan ahead so you can sit back when the storm comes?

Why am I telling you this? Simply because the community almost got pulled down. That really pisses me off. They were ready to take down the whole group because of a couple posts that caused 3 people to leave the community.

With that, I am making you aware. I was called Draconian because of the rules we have to keep this community clean. These are rules I have cleared with this group years ago.

Nobody gets paid to moderate this board. This is out of pure love for podcasting. I am frustrated and hurt that someone is so self-absorbed they would try to take down the house.

Please be on guard The best community is one that can be regulated by everyone. If you see something, say something. You can PM me on Google+ or email geekazine at gmail

Thanks to all of you who've made this board what it is. Let's keep this group going for years to come!

And now a mantra.
I'm Sorry I ranted.
I Love the fact you come to this community and hope you continue to do so
Please forgive me for if I made you feel upset
Thank you. ___

Did +Google+ just fix the Communities Porn Problem? I was moderating my boards when I noticed the "!" problem was gone. This was the issue where tons of profiles with only an exclamation point for the name. If you looked at the members, you would see either young beautiful girls in questionable poses or a generic blue profile with the "!" for a name.

Upon further inspection, the "!" profiles were somewhat still there, but many were removed. The remaining ones were scattered throughout the profiles.

I am guessing Google did a purge and update in the last 24 hours. With that I say "Thank you". My communities try to stay professional and some have been complaining about this. Hopefully this problem will not come back.

Question of the Day  - Old Podcast Gear Some of us have been in it for 10 years. Even 5 years ago the hardware and software was different. Today I was cleaning out my closet and found an Eyeball... A +Blue Microphones Eyeball webcam that is. In an effort to clean, it's heading to Goodwill. I also have a lot of hard drives that need to be sifted through before I take them apart and use for shooting practice.

I feel like there should be a Gazelle for podcasters. Nonetheless, What do you do with your older, unused podcast gear?

When I was out in California, I learned about ZCast. It was billed as the Periscope for podcasts. You set up a time and podcast. I tried a couple but am not sure where the audio files live and if I can download them. What are your thoughts?

Podcast Gear from NAMM - What Are You Excited For? (be my eyes and ears) This is the National Association for Music Merchants. As a musician, I am excited to see some of the new music tech out there. Best part is there will be a lot of items a #Podcaster  might find useful. Companies like +IK Multimedia will be out there showing off new ways you can create content on a smaller budget.

I am hoping you guys can be my eyes and ears for this show. If you find a new product you want to know more about, Tweet me +Geekazine . I'll try to cover it best I can. If the bandwidth holds, I might be recording live from the show.

Question of the Day - YouTube There are some that don't include YouTube in their podcast plan - mostly audio shows, but some video shows use other systems like Vimeo or Dailymotion. While +Geekazine is on YouTube, +Day in Tech History is not because it's audio-only. Do you have a reason why your show is not on YouTube?

Question of the Day - Power Words The things you say can change your audience. They might listen more or less. Power words can bring emotion and action to what you say. With time you can teach yourself to say these words without thinking about it. Some power words include:

-promising
-useful
- skill
- practical
- astonishing
- superior
- edge
- expert
- unique
- sure fire
- revolutionary

What power words do you find most useful and how do you utilize them?

Podcaster Malware alert I got a Google alert that a website called MusicVIPShop (dot com) was cataloging my podcast. Problem is, when you select the "Download MP3", it tries to put a malware-porn file on your computer.

I have reported this to Google, but you might want to make sure your podcast is not showing up on this site.

Also, if a new Podcast aggregator site shows up with your show and it looks sketchy, do not click on links and report to Google ASAP.

Question of the Day - Category Realignment It was suggested we look at the categories in the Podcasters community to improve upon the greatness we have. I personally have always wanted to add a "Podcast Coaches" category but haven't because I would want it to be only approved coaches posting area.

The question is 2-part: What would you get rid of and what would you replace it with or rename it to?

Question of the Day - Category Realignment It was suggested we look at the categories in the Podcasters community to improve upon the greatness we have. I personally have always wanted to add a "Podcast Coaches" category but haven't because I would want it to be only approved coaches posting area.

Question of the Day - Resolutions I am not talking about the "more content" type resolutions, but more those resolutions that are implementable and really do add value.

Someone commented on a video asking why I didn't mention the price of a product. In the past I found that putting a value brought trolls commenting about not knowing how much it costs. From his comment I re-thought that strategy. Maybe I should give a price range rather than an exact price. Saying something like "It's a great sub $100 item".

Did you come up with something that could be a great resolution and tip to help others?

Question of the Day - Two Minutes of Fame If you had the opportunity to remix a 2 minute segment from any of your shows as a promo to be played on a highly listened to show (such as +Adam Carolla, +The Joe Rogan Experience , +Tim Ferriss , etc), which episode snippet of 2015 would you pull from (episode URL and timestamp)?

Rules: You cannot make any new promos, it has to be content that came from a show. It also can't be a bunch of snippets, but you can edit the single bit to fit into 2 minutes. Only voiceover you can do is the name of your show and possibly a twitter handle or website.

Question of the Day - Explaining What You're Doing There are a few audio podcasters out there who do things and explain what they are doing. I was asked over the weekend by one of them if they are over or under-explaining things. They don't want to bore the audience but also want to make sure they understand what's going on.

Reminds me of the old "Telegraph" game where you have to describe what it is without saying the name of the object. What tips do you give to make sure describing an Elephant doesn't turn into a Peacock?

Question of the Day - Two-Parter Interviews can run long and the content inside might all be valuable, making you have to create a 2-part episode. I've even done reviews where part 1 I look at one product and part 2 I continue with another from the same company. So what is your procedure to publish and promote a 2-part podcast?

Question of the Day - Patreon The crowdfund subscription model allows you to get support from fans. Others say it's a big albatross because you have to continually promote it for small returns. Do you use +Patreon to support your #Podcast  ? If so, do you have a tip you can drop to help others succeed?

Question of the Day - Termage For my +Wearable Today show, we have adopted the word "WearTech" instead of saying Wearable Technology. We have some other terms which we stick to saying one way - no different than writers having to follow a style guide for the periodical they write for. Have you set some terms within your podcast, or do you just say what's on the top of your head?

Question of the Day - Re-recording I've had shows go so horribly wrong that we've recorded a second time. It happens. This last week I had a show where the video was not up to par, but not worth re-recording. So what's the threshold for you? Would you even re-record a show?

Question of the Day - High End Cables Many have disputed getting $100 cables, but some have redeeming qualities. For example, if your cable breaks, some companies will replace at no charge. But others swear on the $5 XLR, TRS, RCA and even USB cables. After all - if you are good at a soldier gun, cable repair can make things last a lot longer.

Do you go for the high end, or are the cheaper end cables just fine?

Question of the Day - the New Hangouts Apparently while I was in Vegas last week Google took Hangouts out of Google+. I had to resize all my windows as the newer hangout window did not act the same as before (small quirks). I also noticed a little more pixelation than usual. Do you use Hangouts for your podcast and are you finding issues with the new format?

What an awesome score! I found these at a surplus store for $25 each. They are floor mics - you place them around the stage so you don't have to mic everyone.

I got them for the Audio Technica 8531 packs, because I can use headset mics with these. However, I found out the microphones are AT U841A, which just sweetened the deal.

This two-microphone pack sells new for... $800! Not bad for a $50 investment.

I also got a Sony EVI-D30 for $20. It's only an SD camera with zoom and remote gimble, but worth the cost for what I can do with it. I am seeing people selling these for $50.

The mics are the real score, though.

Question of the Day - Like/Dislike Button for Podcasting Facebook is recently working on a system so you can choose a reaction to the post. On Youtube you can get "Disliked" but it's anonymous. Should we have some type of like system for Podcasting, or is a star rating system (itunes) enough?

Question of the Day - Live or Pre-Recorded Interviews? I don't do too many interviews on my shows, but when I do, I pre-record them and figure out a place during the actual show. I've also been on shows where I am online for the first 15 minutes during my interview and then bounce for the rest of the show. So how do you interview?
