Jeff Sullivan1,995,157+Lori Hibbett and I and I will try to be shooting on the rocks by around 6:30 to capture golden hour light. Sunset is at 7:18, so the best sky color will be from then until 7:40 or so. Then we'll have some "blue hour" twilight for another 20-30 minutes, the light painting can start by 8, and stars will be gradually strengthening from then through 8:30 for night shots. If we're getting some good light and reflections off the beach making light orbs and so on, we can shoot to 9 or whenever we get thirsty. No problem if you're late given work, school and weekday traffic, we should be able to stay entertained shooting in the changing light for at least 2-2.5 hours.  We'll go to a bar or restaurant for another hour or two after that. This free social event is open to all; you're welcome to bring your photographer friends (on Flickr, Meetup, 500px, from your local photography club, etc.) We're looking forward to seeing those of you we've met out shooting in recent years, and meeting those of you we haven't shot with yet! We'd like to explore the area known as Hospitals Reef or Draper Villas, the rocks adjacent to Coast Boulevard Park 0.7 miles south of La Jolla Cove (see map).  We'll also shoot El Matador State Beach in Malibu April 11 and Little Corona Beach April 14.Sunset Photowalk La Jolla Monday April 152013-04-15 18:30:0030

Death Valley "Super Bloom" Last week
The wildflower bloom was still going strong in Death Valley last week, in both density and variety.  In the last shot for example, you can see Desert Gold (Geraea canescens) and Caltha-leaf Phacelia (Phacelia calthifolia) , with Brown-Eyed Evening Primrose (Camissonia claviformis) and white Gravel Ghost (Atrichoseris platyphylla).  You can see some pink Purple Mat (Nama demissum) in there as well.

I'm gradually adding to my album of Death Valley spring shots: https://plus.google.com/photos/107459220492917008623/albums/5831194499079947137

Photography Technique: Pan Blur
Read the description and give it a try, but I'd recommend doing it with lenses that do not have Image Stabilization (IS/VR) systems that might get damaged if the up and down movements are too abrupt.

Colorful Aspen in Motion
The Fall colors were spectacular over the weekend in the Eastern Sierra, and the changing lighting during the day provided almost endless opportunities for dramatic and creative captures.  I say "almost' only because at this time of year, the days are too short!  About the best you can do is start well before dawn and continue until well after dark.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, the Orionid meteor shower provided bonus opportunities all night long, so the weekend ended up being quite the photography marathon.

This was produced with the pan blur technique I've been playing with: finding subjects with an interesting blend of color, contrast and light, and capturing them hand held, panning the camera up and down.  It's a great way to exercise how you see a scene.
"I almost never set out to photograph a landscape, nor do I think of my camera as a means of recording a mountain or an animal unless I absolutely need a 'record shot'. My first thought is always of light." - Galen Rowell

It was a busy weekend, with hordes of photographers crowding the most popular spots, and starting to discover and clog up many of the formerly obscure ones, thanks to the Internet.  Fortunately there are still a few places which haven't been named/promoted and mapped to death, so +Lori Hibbett and I were able to have most of our shooting locations to ourselves.

We heard that +Kurt Harvey and his wife were coming to the area, so we met Kurt Friday and Saturday nights to do a little light painting and star trail photography.  We ran into +Michael Frye  and +Claudia Welsh at dinner Saturday, for the second weekend in a row.  I thought I recognized a couple of folks with them... turned out one of them was +Doug Kaye.  Also in the area were +Maximilian Laue +Brian Bach Sørensen +Swee Oh +elizabeth hahn  +Tim Gupta +Larry Nienkark and +Scott Loftesness, so check out their streams this week for Fall colors as well (we had heard many of them were going to Yosemite National Park, so sadly we didn't connect with them).

It's interesting that you actually need to pay as much or more attention to technical details when trying to pull off shots like this, if you want them to turn out particularly well.  Here are a couple of blog posts I've written on shooting Fall colors in recent years:

Am I Using Collections Wrong?
In the year or so since Collections came along, response to my posts has plummeted. I've tried various collections, as well as regular G+ posts, uploads to and sharing through Google Photos, and various content types like photos, video and albums. I've tried sharing to large groups. Nothing seems to work well.

Am I doing something significantly wrong under the newer Collections and/or Google Photos features, or has the Google+ community itself changed that much over the past year?

Sample Spring Photos from the Eastern Sierra
"The Traveler sees what he sees. The Tourist sees what he has come to see.” - G.K. Chesterton
Previsualization, anticipating opportunities and compositions, is critical to great landscape photography, so a photographer with local knowledge anticipates what the traveler never sees, and the tourist never imagined!

That's why I love leading workshops near my home in the Eastern Sierra: I can show people subjects and compositions that they'd otherwise never see, in the best seasonal conditions and at the right time of day for the best light.

Here are some samples of the types of things we might pursue in our workshop coming up in three weeks: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2016/05/13/sample-photos-from-the-eastern-sierra/

Spring/Summer Workshops in the Eastern Sierra
After researching and documenting the best locations in the Eastern Sierra for many years, I can't wait to show photographers around to the best spots in the best light. Many of the dates are adjacent to the dates I have for my Bodie night photography workshops, and in most cases I've saved a few spots so photographers can enroll in both if they like.

In June, July and August we should be able to enjoy wildflowers in addition to the stunning landscapes in the Eastern Sierra, so I've started a "Spring in the Eastern Sierra" album to show some examples.

I've also added a blog post to show the types of things we might pursue:

Eastern Sierra Wildflowers
I decided to start a Spring in the Eastern Sierra" album, and what better way to start it than an overview of some of the wildflowers that bloom here? Although wildflower season runs from late February through August at various elevations, the Inyo to Mono County area has particularly nice blooms in certain areas in June and July.

I'll be showing groups of photographers the best spots in June, July and August: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/eastern-sierra-fall-colors-photo-workshops/

Mercury Transit of the Sun is Underway!
With a proper eye-protecting filter, the planet Mercury can be seen crossing the face of the sun today. This happens approximately 13 times per century. I'll have my photos available later, but in the meantime, here are some of my photos from the Venus transit of the sun on June 5, 2012, which won't occur again for another 100+ years!

I looked at my photos from the Venus transit to remind myself of appropriate practices and settings for the #mercurytransit , as discussed on my blog: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2016/05/09/mercury-transit-of-the-sun-coming-may-9/

Departing Clouds in Bodie
In the summer, the Eastern Sierra often has afternoon thunderstorms, driven by heat and monsoon moisture. Fortunately once the "engine" for the convection, the heat of the sun, goes away, the clouds tend to break up and/or drift eastward, leaving a stunningly clear view of starry skies.

More Photos from Death Valley in April
In April I could see a storm front approaching in the weather forecast.  Daytime high temperatures would drop into the 80s.  So I threw my camera and camping gear into the car, and headed to the park with a list of the sites I wanted to explore or revisit next, to deliver in the +SNAPP Guides app.

I hiked to a natural bridge, and enjoyed great views with sunlight streaming through clouds.  I explored an old mining town site, and found wildflowers thriving at higher elevations than on past visits. Two jets saw me with my camera on the edge of a canyon, and they took two passes each way, angling sharply up right in front of me so I could get a great shot.  On one evening, I caught a sandstorm over Mesquite Flat Dunes, back-lit with golden sunlight by the setting sun.

This is an image of the Venus transit of the sun, June 5, 2012.  The planet Mercury will cross in front of the sun as seen from earth on May 9, 2016.  A solar filter can be used to photograph this event safely.  I've added notes on capturing this sort of event on my blog:

Photograph Jets Up Close in Death Valley
In addition to getting cool photos of jets up close, you might also catch the formation of water condensing on the wings and trailing off of the wingtips:

Hospice du Rhone Event in Paso Robles, April 14 - 16
The Hospice du Rhone wine testing event coming up in 11 days will be held in Paso Robles, convenient to wine lovers in both Northern and Southern California.  I've attended multiple Rhone Rangers and Hospice du Rhone wine tasting events in the past, so I can help you decide where to start among the 239 wineries from around the world that will be pouring wines made from syrah, grenache, viognier, and other Rhone varietal grapes:
http://activesole.blogspot.com/2016/04/wines-to-taste-at-hospice-du-rhone.html

On your way to and from the event, consider checking out the wildflowers blooming profusely now at Carrizo Plain National Monument and in the Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area!

April California Wildflower Road Trip
One of my favorite road trips ever was a tour of California Wildflowers sites in the spring, five years ago today: http://activesole.blogspot.com/2016/04/california-spring-wildflower-sites-April.html
I looked up some photos from that trip to decide whether I should follow the same route again this week. On my blog I display a few of those newly post-processed photos, and discuss yesterday's wildflower report from the Antelope Valley California Poppy Preserve.

The Nik Collection is Now Free
+Nik Collection by Google has announced that its entire suite of photo editing tools is now free.  When I evaluated the suite in 2013 I found the tools to be interesting and useful, but I wasn't ready to pay the premium to augment my existing workflow.  On the tests i performed from this Summer 2013 trip, I found Nik Color Efex particularly effective on the orange bark of giant sequoia trees.  I'll definitely try it again to see if there have been further improvements since then!

Images from Sequoia National Park
"You cannot learn the message that these trees have for you in merely passing by. A day in their presence passes quickly, and with each moment you will be better able to appreciate their singular beauty and the miracle of their existence. To be in harmony with them, cast aside your worldly cares. In our battle for wealth we are prone to forget the real things of life, the things that cannot play us false."
- Herbert Earl Wilson, "The lore and the lure of the Yosemite" (1925)

I post-processed these in a trial copy of +Nik Software plug-ins for +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.  I used the Color Efex Pro 4 to further adjust a few images I had already take a pass at in Lightroom.  So far it seems that the images can exhibit a little more color without taking on an over-saturated look.  Some of the filters like Polarization can adjust complex areas of the photos much like dodging and burning in a darkroom, without a lot of tedious selection and masking work in Photoshop.  So far, so good.  I hope that I can find more time to play with this module and the others before my trial runs out in a couple of weeks!___The Nik Collection is Now Free

Light Painting
During one of our night sessions in Bodie back in 2014 I tried whipping "El wire" around for a few frames to see if I could make a "smoke" effect.  The technique needs some adjustment on the exposure and post-processing sides, but it was a fun experiment.

Our Bodie night photography workshops are more than 3/4 full for 2016; registration for three of our five dates has been closed.  The main remaining dates are July 29 and August 28: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/
Those two dates were chosen to be adjacent to nights when the park will let visitors stay in the park until 10 pm, so although those nights will of course be more crowded, at least you can get some extra sunset and twilight time in the park.

Had a great workshop during the "super bloom" in Death Valley last week!  I've started a new Death Valley album for 2016 photos, over on my +Death Valley Workshops page.  The album is up to 55 photos so far, heavily weighted towards the current wildflower conditions of course, and I'll add more as I get them processed. I'll also get a trip report up on my blog, to discuss specific locations.

I can also use accessory lenses without the complications of getting dust on my sensor. Captured during my Death Valley workshop last week. People said that the bloom was on decline here.  Maybe so, but it's still hundreds of times better than a normal year, so a week earlier's "better" conditions are irrelevant!

I retried this lunar rainbow post as a fresh upload to my G+ Page, and that worked a lot better:

Yosemite Moonbow Season Starts Next Month!
After catching the setting sun's light on Horsetail Fall this month, I can't wait for the next big annual astronomical event in Yosemite: moonbows in the mist of Yosemite's waterfalls. These night rainbows happen at certain times on certain nights based on the position of the moon in the sky relative to your viewing position. The moon moves a lot from night to night, so the time you'll catch them in a given waterfall changes every night.

This year the moonbows should be the strongest they've been in recent years, due to the El Nino weather pattern bringing us a healthy snowpack in the Sierra Nevada. The main months to capture the moonbows are April and May, although they can continue in June in many waterfalls if their flow stays healthy. IF you'd like to try for them with me in April, I'll be showing photographers around the park's amazing landscape, capturing wildflowers and practicing night photography to take advantage of this rare opportunity in this particularly strong year: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/yosemite-national-park-photography-workshops/

At the end of April we should catch the end of the season for California poppies, perhaps the start of the season for dogwood trees blooming, and we may get a late spring storm to enhance sunset and sunrise, and decorate the park with a light dusting of snow. It's one of my favorite times of the year to explore Yosemite, and you can see why in this album:

Available in Death Valley National Park Now
I've updated my Spring in Death Valley album to show my workshop customers next week what they can expect.  We'll downplay some of the sights that they can see any year, and focus on finding both the massive wildflower blooms and more obscure sights that few people visit.  We have a small group, so we decided to do a fair amount of camping to be close to the best sites, given current conditions.  The first 50-60 photos are more relevant, up to the photos of the fire truck and the red Fiat.

More Photos and Notes from Death Valley, Feb 2016
The park still doesn't quite call it a "super bloom", but it's at least above normal, as I discuss in a new blog post:
