NASA Goddard163,929Guess that comet showed us... Comet ISON May Have Survived. Continuing a history of surprises, material from Comet ISON appeared on the other side of the sun on the evening on Nov. 28, 2013, despite not having been seen in observations during its closest approach to the sun.  http://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/comet-ison-may-have-survived/ http://youtu.be/q03I1B_yrPg The ultimate battle of fire and ice! Who will win, the sun or Comet #ISON?  Join #NASA as we follow the journey of Comet ISON as it slingshots around the sun.  Will the awesome gravity and energy of the sun break up this cosmic ball of ice and rock? Will it break up? Or will it pass the sun intact to put on a dazzling show in the December sky?  Watch as NASA solar physicists track the comet LIVE from the mission control for NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory,@NASA_SDO, during #ISON’s closest approach to the sun.  We'll also be joined by comet scientists joining from Kitt Peak Observatory in Arizona, where the solar telescope will be observing ISON and by science writer Phil Plait. Jeff Sullivan1,989,951+Lori Hibbett and I and I will try to be shooting on the rocks by around 6:30 to capture golden hour light. Sunset is at 7:18, so the best sky color will be from then until 7:40 or so. Then we'll have some "blue hour" twilight for another 20-30 minutes, the light painting can start by 8, and stars will be gradually strengthening from then through 8:30 for night shots. If we're getting some good light and reflections off the beach making light orbs and so on, we can shoot to 9 or whenever we get thirsty. No problem if you're late given work, school and weekday traffic, we should be able to stay entertained shooting in the changing light for at least 2-2.5 hours.  We'll go to a bar or restaurant for another hour or two after that. This free social event is open to all; you're welcome to bring your photographer friends (on Flickr, Meetup, 500px, from your local photography club, etc.) We're looking forward to seeing those of you we've met out shooting in recent years, and meeting those of you we haven't shot with yet! We'd like to explore the area known as Hospitals Reef or Draper Villas, the rocks adjacent to Coast Boulevard Park 0.7 miles south of La Jolla Cove (see map).  We'll also shoot El Matador State Beach in Malibu April 11 and Little Corona Beach April 14.Sunset Photowalk La Jolla Monday April 152013-04-15 18:30:0030

Even though the 6D is only about a year newer than the 5D Mark III, I couldn't do this with the older model. The 6D model is now a couple of years old, so I have very high expectations for what Canon can accomplish with the rumored 5D Mark IV model that may be coming this fall!

Mono Lake / Eastern Sierra Workshop Last Week
As I did most of the summer, I held an Eastern Sierra workshop adjacent to my Bodie workshop last weekend, so people could see more of the area and get some practice with night photography before getting to Bodie on Sunday. Summer evenings are often windy, but that doesn't mean that you can't get good sunset shots!

We actually spent some time up in the Tioga Pass area as well, enjoying afternoon cumulous clouds, sunset, and night photography.
I'll have a couple of fall workshops in early October when we can revisit those areas:

Stormy Day in Bodie
At lest a couple of dozen photos from the July 29 night photography workshop are included in the Bodie Photography Workshops album. Torrential rains came to town at 3 pm, just as many workshop participants were leaving town to join us for a pre-workshop dinner at Virginia Creek Settlement. The rain cleared the air of smoke from California's wildfires, then the clouds added to the drama in the sky through golden hour and into sunset, but as often happens, quickly broke up for night photography. It was perfect photography workshop weather!

Our remaining Bodie workshops in 2016 are getting pretty full, so I'm looking into potentially adding a date in October. Let me know if you want to hear about 2017 dates once I have them. The most popular dates do fill quickly these days.... more »

Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows Sunday Night
I headed up to the Tioga Pass Road in Yosemite to see how current summer water levels in the Tuolumne River might influence my workshop later this week. With water levels dropping, there are some nice calm spots for sunset reflections.

California Fall Colors
After enjoying the Eastern Sierra for decades, pursuing fall colors here for over ten years and living here for six, my main fall colors workshop dates this year are:
October 3 - 7 Eastern Sierra Fall Colors and Milky Way
October 10 - 14 Eastern Sierra Fall Colors and Moonlit Landscapes

November 12 - 16 Yosemite Fall Colors and Full Moon

I read today that "In Wisconsin, the fall-color tourists spend over $1 billion". I can show you the best of California for a whole lot less! Perseid Meteor Shower 2016
I've been chasing every meteor shower that I could see with my camera since 2009. This year's Perseid meteor shower was one of the best I've experienced so far.

These are "work in progress" shots, where I've saved the images with meteors in them, and brought those into one composite image.

Tranquility
A shot from my testing of the Canon EOS 6D body I picked up last month. I had been shooting it like I had been shooting my Canon EOS 5D Mark III for the past few years, but it turns out, as is often the case, that the newer camera deserves its own unique approach. There's no substitute for performing your own exhaustive research on your new cameras, so you can best integrate any extended capabilities into your workflow. My Bodie, Eastern Sierra and White Mountains/Bristlecone Pines workshop customers will be getting an earful in the next 2 weeks.

Even though the 6D is only about a year newer than the 5D Mark III, I couldn't do this with the older model. The 6D model is now a couple of years old, so I have very high expectations for what Canon can accomplish with the rumored 5D Mark IV model that may be coming this fall!

Fine Tuning the Itinerary
I'm a bit obsessive about my workshops. People come from a long way to attend them, so I want to make sure that they get the best possible opportunities presented to them in the limited time that we have. For the short Eastern Sierra / Tioga Pass workshop leading up to my Bodie night and interiors workshop in early June, I did several scouting laps of the area we'd cover to make sure that I knew where the wildflowers were best, where the Milky Way was and how it would be positioned, whether or not the morning air was still cold enough to produce steam by the local hydrothermal pools and when the light would strike it, where lakes and ponds were free of ice along Tioga Pass Road and where snow melt ponds provided unique and ephemeral reflections. That format of having a little extra night photography practice leading up to the Bodie session worked well, so I can't wait for my next Eastern Sierra workshop coming up later this month!

Milky Way Over Half Dome
After July 4 fireworks in the Eastern Sierra, I headed up into the Sierra Nevada on Yosemite's Tioga Pass Road to capture some Milky Way shots. I waited at Olmsted Point until the Milky Way would be in the composition above Half Dome. This is a composite of two exposures, one for the foreground and one for the sky.

There was a lot of light pollution here, as well as smoke along the horizon from California's fires, but the air was clear enough for a reasonable result.

We'll be able to head up on Tioga Pass Road fr shots like this during my upcoming Eastern Sierra workshops this year: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/eastern-sierra-fall-colors-photo-workshops/

Sunset Light Through the Storm
The storm was thick enough a couple of nights ago, there didn't seem to be much point in being out, but a minutes before sunset the sun found a small opening to send its last rays of warm light through. From the remains of an ancient stone shelter, I scaled the rocky outcropping above, where generations of people had watched countless sunrises before me. The sunlight also formed a rainbow in rain showers towards the White Mountains.

In the morning, the Sierra Nevada was visible past sagebrush clearings. When the rock shelters were built, his site would make a a warmer place to live than closer to either the Sierra Nevada or the White Mountains in the winter months.

Wine Country
Before I switched to photography full time I was in the wine industry for a few years.  I had been enjoying wine as a consumer for a long time as I worked at high tech companies in the Bay Area, and I thought it might be fun to get into the business.  Photography won out in the end, but I still enjoy wine a lot and I still tend a few vines that I planted.  From those vines I have a few gallons of homemade cabernet sauvignon which are ready to be bottled.

Photography Technique: Pan Blur
Read the description and give it a try, but I'd recommend doing it with lenses that do not have Image Stabilization (IS/VR) systems that might get damaged if the up and down movements are too abrupt.

Colorful Aspen in Motion
The Fall colors were spectacular over the weekend in the Eastern Sierra, and the changing lighting during the day provided almost endless opportunities for dramatic and creative captures.  I say "almost' only because at this time of year, the days are too short!  About the best you can do is start well before dawn and continue until well after dark.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, the Orionid meteor shower provided bonus opportunities all night long, so the weekend ended up being quite the photography marathon.

This was produced with the pan blur technique I've been playing with: finding subjects with an interesting blend of color, contrast and light, and capturing them hand held, panning the camera up and down.  It's a great way to exercise how you see a scene.
"I almost never set out to photograph a landscape, nor do I think of my camera as a means of recording a mountain or an animal unless I absolutely need a 'record shot'. My first thought is always of light." - Galen Rowell

It was a busy weekend, with hordes of photographers crowding the most popular spots, and starting to discover and clog up many of the formerly obscure ones, thanks to the Internet.  Fortunately there are still a few places which haven't been named/promoted and mapped to death, so +Lori Hibbett and I were able to have most of our shooting locations to ourselves.

We heard that +Kurt Harvey and his wife were coming to the area, so we met Kurt Friday and Saturday nights to do a little light painting and star trail photography.  We ran into +Michael Frye  and +Claudia Welsh at dinner Saturday, for the second weekend in a row.  I thought I recognized a couple of folks with them... turned out one of them was +Doug Kaye.  Also in the area were +Maximilian Laue +Brian Bach Sørensen +Swee Oh +elizabeth hahn  +Tim Gupta +Larry Nienkark and +Scott Loftesness, so check out their streams this week for Fall colors as well (we had heard many of them were going to Yosemite National Park, so sadly we didn't connect with them).

It's interesting that you actually need to pay as much or more attention to technical details when trying to pull off shots like this, if you want them to turn out particularly well.  Here are a couple of blog posts I've written on shooting Fall colors in recent years:

Shooting & Postprocessing Fall Colors Images

Am I Using Collections Wrong?
In the year or so since Collections came along, response to my posts has plummeted. I've tried various collections, as well as regular G+ posts, uploads to and sharing through Google Photos, and various content types like photos, video and albums. I've tried sharing to large groups. Nothing seems to work well.

Am I doing something significantly wrong under the newer Collections and/or Google Photos features, or has the Google+ community itself changed that much over the past year?

Sample Spring Photos from the Eastern Sierra
"The Traveler sees what he sees. The Tourist sees what he has come to see.” - G.K. Chesterton
Previsualization, anticipating opportunities and compositions, is critical to great landscape photography, so a photographer with local knowledge anticipates what the traveler never sees, and the tourist never imagined!

That's why I love leading workshops near my home in the Eastern Sierra: I can show people subjects and compositions that they'd otherwise never see, in the best seasonal conditions and at the right time of day for the best light.

Here are some samples of the types of things we might pursue in our workshop coming up in three weeks: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2016/05/13/sample-photos-from-the-eastern-sierra/

Spring/Summer Workshops in the Eastern Sierra
After researching and documenting the best locations in the Eastern Sierra for many years, I can't wait to show photographers around to the best spots in the best light. Many of the dates are adjacent to the dates I have for my Bodie night photography workshops, and in most cases I've saved a few spots so photographers can enroll in both if they like.

In June, July and August we should be able to enjoy wildflowers in addition to the stunning landscapes in the Eastern Sierra, so I've started a "Spring in the Eastern Sierra" album to show some examples.

I've also added a blog post to show the types of things we might pursue:

Eastern Sierra Wildflowers
I decided to start a Spring in the Eastern Sierra" album, and what better way to start it than an overview of some of the wildflowers that bloom here? Although wildflower season runs from late February through August at various elevations, the Inyo to Mono County area has particularly nice blooms in certain areas in June and July.

I'll be showing groups of photographers the best spots in June, July and August: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/eastern-sierra-fall-colors-photo-workshops/

Mercury Transit of the Sun is Underway!
With a proper eye-protecting filter, the planet Mercury can be seen crossing the face of the sun today. This happens approximately 13 times per century. I'll have my photos available later, but in the meantime, here are some of my photos from the Venus transit of the sun on June 5, 2012, which won't occur again for another 100+ years!

Departing Clouds in Bodie
In the summer, the Eastern Sierra often has afternoon thunderstorms, driven by heat and monsoon moisture. Fortunately once the "engine" for the convection, the heat of the sun, goes away, the clouds tend to break up and/or drift eastward, leaving a stunningly clear view of starry skies.

The title? It's May 4, May the fourth.

More Photos from Death Valley in April
In April I could see a storm front approaching in the weather forecast.  Daytime high temperatures would drop into the 80s.  So I threw my camera and camping gear into the car, and headed to the park with a list of the sites I wanted to explore or revisit next, to deliver in the +SNAPP Guides app.

I hiked to a natural bridge, and enjoyed great views with sunlight streaming through clouds.  I explored an old mining town site, and found wildflowers thriving at higher elevations than on past visits. Two jets saw me with my camera on the edge of a canyon, and they took two passes each way, angling sharply up right in front of me so I could get a great shot.  On one evening, I caught a sandstorm over Mesquite Flat Dunes, back-lit with golden sunlight by the setting sun.

Mercury Transit Coming May 9!
This is an image of the Venus transit of the sun, June 5, 2012.  The planet Mercury will cross in front of the sun as seen from earth on May 9, 2016.  A solar filter can be used to photograph this event safely.  I've added notes on capturing this sort of event on my blog:

Photograph Jets Up Close in Death Valley
In addition to getting cool photos of jets up close, you might also catch the formation of water condensing on the wings and trailing off of the wingtips:
"Condensation of water vapor in wing tip vortices is most common on aircraft flying at high angles of attack, such as fighter aircraft in high g maneuvers, or airliners taking off and landing on humid days." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wingtip_vortices

Shell Creek Road Wildflowers
Shell Creek Road is another place worth checking on a Southern California wildflower tour in April. It's southeast of the town of Paso Robles. It's covered on page 177 of my guidebook, "Photographing California Vol 2- South":

I've always found wine tastings to be a great way to find great wines. I've attended ones focused on zinfandal, pinot noir, Rhone varietal wines, but somehow I missed until now +The Chardonnay Symposium: http://thechardonnaysymposium.com/ They're having a drawing for a $5000 getaway including the event, so if you like wine, click on the image below to enter.

When Picasa is dropped in favor of Google Photos, will the URLs for existing photos uploaded to Picasa Web Albums remain the same? The easiest way to add photos to blog posts on +Blogger is to select photos on Picasa Web Albums.  I have hundreds of blog posts going back many years which rely on URLs referencing photos in Picasa Web Albums.
