How different lens focal lengths impact portrait subjects
In this animated gif you can clearly see how wide angle lenses (lower focal lengths) distort the face and telephoto lenses (higher focal lengths) compress foreground and background with minor facial distortion. 50-100mm is the sweet spot for facial distortion and background compression.

That said if the camera and subject were in the same location at each focal length the size and position of your subject would greatly change and distortion of the face would not be as apparent... but the distortion/compression would be apparent throughout the scene.

Google Nik Collection is free today.
Get it for Lightroom and Photoshop while you can.

Today we’re making the Nik Collection available to everyone, for free.

Photo enthusiasts all over the world use the Nik Collection to get the best out of their images every day. As we continue to focus our long-term investments in building incredible photo editing tools for mobile, including Google Photos and Snapseed, we’ve decided to make the Nik Collection desktop suite available for free, so that now anyone can use it.

The Nik Collection is comprised of seven desktop plug-ins that provide a powerful range of photo editing capabilities -- from filter applications that improve color correction, to retouching and creative effects, to image sharpening that brings out all the hidden details, to the ability to make adjustments to the color and tonality of images.

Starting March 24, 2016, the latest Nik Collection will be freely available to download: Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro and Dfine. If you purchased the Nik Collection in 2016, you will receive a full refund, which we’ll automatically issue back to you in the coming days.

We’re excited to bring the powerful photo editing tools once only used by professionals to even more people now. ___Google Nik Collection is free today.

Flickr Year in Review 2015
Only 3% of cameras used in the Flickr community were mirrorless. Interesting statistic considering all the hype surrounding the format this year. The've done a great job with social marketing, but it looks like they have a long way to go before overtaking traditional formats.

Initial Impressions of the Light L16 Camera

It's early yet. It certainly seems like it has potential. At tonights launch party there were no cameras to try. It's size was bigger than I expected. It was about 35-50% bigger than an iPhone and about 2x's as thick. The big unknowns for me are:
What software interface is required?
What meta data is going to be carried over with the files for standard or unique post-processing?
What is the image quality like (especially at low light)?
What optical aberrations will there be with multiple cameras firing and subject movement?
and so on...
I'm withholding judgement until I can have some hands on time with it. That said it's great to see companies like Light trying to break the mold and creating something new.

Newly Announced Light L16 Computational Photography Camera
Well this looks interesting. I'm sure people are still gun shy to new computational photography technology thanks to Lytro not living up to the hype. The biggest hurdle aside from life post-Lytro is taming the beast that is the iPhone. Still tough to pass up on 52 megapixels, 3 in camera focal lengths with optical zoom, wi-fi (which Canon still does not have WTF!?) and post photo depth of field management.
My big questions for Light is what will be proprietary about the camera? This was Lytro's doom. Will it support DNG? will it output a RAW file? JPG? Will it require proprietary software (again Lytro's fatal decision)? What is the dynamic range of the camera? How well does it perform in low light? How well will it play with social sharing sites? I could go on, but this is the start of the things I'm most curious... more »

So would you get one? Pre-launch it's $400 off bringing the price to $1299.
That's still a lot to commit to without knowing how the camera handles and how natural their interface feels.___
