On Track Tips | Wiser Sites2,266So earlier this week I’m cruising through my stream and come across this post by @101350861337322805122  titled “Google Killed the Generalist.” I opened it up and started reading and I was like, “serious, Hanley! Are you kidding me?!” He started talking smack about the generalists - a sweeping attack. So you can imagine I got my feathers ruffled a little. It was haughty. It was condescending. It was an apology to generalists where he asked, “Are you a generalist? That’s too bad. Actually, I should say, I’m sorry. Google Killed the Generalist.”  I had to write a rebuttal. I couldn't let this slide. You see, my company, Wiser Sites, is a bona fide generalist, general contractor, one-stop shop marketing agency. We hire specialists for our clients. We are generalists, and we are proud of it!  I put up a rebuttal post that sparked a discussion with over 75 thoughtful and inspired comments. Then two more blog articles made reference to this “debate” and several posts and shares picked up on the discussion. It is all too easy for SEO professionals inside 'the echo chamber' to hear primarily only from people who understand SEO and believe in it.  In the wider world, a great many people who have strong input on websites are quite dismissive of SEO, having primarily seen only the kind that appears in a million spam emails. @111081752713318683929 suggested the topic for this week, as she has close ties to the SEO world, but also gets to see the views that some other copywriters have about SEO. There are still a great many bloggers, for just one example, who think SEO is an unnecessary measure - you just create good articles and content and Google will figure it all out.  Others have read a few too many of the "SEO in 10 easy steps" articles who think that those ten steps are all there is.  No matter that around 80% of the websites hit by the Panda update were blogs and bloggers...  It isn't just one-sided either.  There are many SEOs of varying skill levels who are dismissive of all the other facets of successful web ventures.  SEOs who mistakenly put an importance on rankings ahead of usability, or conversions - leading to a site that gets lots of people to see how much it sucks.  Heck, even very experienced SEOs sometimes make very dismissive or even disparaging remarks about social media specialist, for example. The fact is, marketing online is still marketing, and requires many diverse approaches all come together in a unified and integrated campaign.  Increasingly, it will also need to integrate with the offline marketing too. Jim Munro18,767*Why I think TechCrunch nailed it.* I think Techcrunch is the pits, gutter journalism, but I also think Alexia Totsis was accidentally right when she diagnosed G+ as terminal. With only her deep throat's information to go on she would not have had enough to make such a huge call. She should have waited to make a careful analysis but that's not how techCrunch operates. I think what's happened since has borne out her wild guess though. She could not have known that Larry Page and Dave Besbris were about to go radio silent apart from a few feelgood and pr posts. The guy who said only two or three years ago "Google is Google+" or vice-versa, has now said in his farewell to Vic Gundotra, "In the meantime we’ll continue working hard to build great new experiences for the ever increasing number of Google+ fans."  Sorry Larry but I come to G+ to hear from and learn from my friends as well as find a sounding board for my own opinions. I am not a "fan" and a "great new experience" for me would be a page that loads completely in a reasonable time.  Vic Gundotra might as well have said that he'd grown tired of swimming up the waterfall. The new guard does not see G+ as a means of communication. It's clear that they see us as "fans" to be distracted by sparkly things. If they'd wanted to communicate and talk sense to their users, they would have done so by now. Google just failed the test of social media. I won't be leaving G+ until it's most valuable core features are withdrawn. Other ancillary features will live on because there's a compelling business case for them but I don't think it will take many years before some management drone sunsets the core functionality of G+. Much current growth has come from android, once Nokia starts taking big chunks of that market, I think it might be time to start looking for the green exit signs. It's no big deal, all that's required at present is to devise the exit strategy that I did not ever think would be needed. Help wanted.

I need help transcribing videos of TSA abuse for use in court very soon, in two major cases.

They're all on YouTube publicly, and open to public caption submissions/edits. My filing is due July 31 at latest, but I need it done well before then, since I also have to write & research briefs.

Most are fully or partially transcribed, and need checking & annotation of who is speaking when. Some are not transcribed at all, though.

In each video, you should be able to click cc -> contribute captions (or similar) from any signed in account.

All of them need full transcriptions, with speaker indicators, including objective description of any visible actions.

Feel free to share. I would appreciate a CC to any lists, and an email from contributors letting me know what they've done.
