beatstone2,128,201+Artists In The Plus is proud to bring you a very special "Concerts In The Plus!' with Guitar Legend +Preston Reed. (Banner Photo By +Ralf Hebauf ) +Preston Reed has virtually reinvented how the acoustic guitar is played. Reed practices a flamboyant self-invented style, characterized by percussive techniques and simultaneous rhythm and melody lines that dance and ricochet around each other, giving his music a level of excitement that is unparalleled among today's guitarists. Playing an array of guitars from acoustic to electric to classical Reed's vast range of explosively original music will forever change your expectation of a guitarist. First-time listeners find it impossible to believe that they're hearing just the one musician, in real time. Reed attacks the entire instrument in a never-ending search for the orchestra he knows is lurking inside. At full tilt, his fingers, thumbs, fists and hands at once suggest a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and several guitarists at work. The most impressive thing about Reed's technique, though, is that it doesn't draw attention to itself. His compositions are far from abstract virtuosic displays; even without lyrics he creates vivid, engrossing scenes. Sometimes the effect is almost onomatopoetic. Reed generates visual stimuli with every tweak of his instrument, thus augmenting his wordless compositions with an aura of the poetic. Each tune is a story in itself with a potent, cinematic atmosphere and an almost tangible thread of communication between Preston Reed and the listener. Reed's entry into this guitar odyssey was inauspicious enough, his path thereafter largely self-discovered. A few chords learned from his guitar playing father, a brief, very brief, flirtation with the ukulele, clandestine practice sessions of his favourite Beatles and Stones songs on dad's guitar .... and then a too-strict classical guitar teacher led to premature retirement. At 16, however, Reed heard Jefferson Airplane's rootsy blues offshoot, Hot Tuna. His interest was rekindled big time. Acoustic guitar heroes John Fahey and Leo Kottke were studied, their styles absorbed but not imitated, and at this point things really begin to get interesting because, at 17, Reed, by now precociously proficient, played his first live gig, supporting beat poet Allen Ginsberg at the Smithsonian Institute. Just getting on a train from his native Armonk in New York State to Washington was a cool adventure. And it was just the first of many, not least of which was the one which resulted from his signing his first deal with a major record company, MCA, through the auspices of his friend, country singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett. Determined to make the most of this opportunity, Reed pushed himself to go beyond the standard fingerpicking styles he'd perfected. The result was the beginnings of Reeds startlingly innovative style, with its percussive, two-handed fretboard attack, that you hear today and which has caused guitar luminaries such "Concerts In The Plus!" It's been a long but, a good day.

A few firsts today:

- first time in several years that I've been in a city. Having lived in Bradford for 8 years you would have thought I'd have been ok with it but, having been living in more peaceful west Wales where the largest town (Aberystwyth) has a population of 25,000 during university term time, it was a bit of a surprise to see so many people in one place.

- first time I've eaten a chicken heart (https://plus.google.com/+JimWall/posts/FybKczMN1yo). Not my favourite of the 15 meats we tried in the restaurant tonight but, it was ok.

- first time I've been in a place with so many Ingress players and have been able to put names that I've seen in Comms and hangouts to faces.

- got my first spec ops badge/medal after doing a few missions

Hopefully if today is any indication, tomorrow (which is the day of the anomaly) should be a good laugh and hopefully a victorious day for the Resistance.___

Have been for a bit of a wander around near the hotel. About a minute or less away is Birmingham Cathedral.

I'm more of an agnostic/atheist but, as someone told me when they heard I was coming to Birmingham, it does look fairly spectacular, even if it's the smallest cathedral I've ever seen.

Around it is a park which is not very big but, seems to be a well used place for people to relax and chill out.

I don't know about other times but, the park is full of Ingress players today.

Waiting for my one and only train of the day.

In 4.5 hours, I'll travel down the coast turn left at Dovey Junction then head all the way across Wales from the western side to the eastern side before nipping across the border and wandering round towards Birmingham New Street.

Look out Birmingham, here I come.

Happy Anomaly Eve everybody.

Hope all are well.

I've never taken part in an Ingress Anomaly before (apart from trying to help with defence for Dublin Anomaly from the coast of West Wales) so, this weekend in Birmingham will be intriguing.

I don't know whether there will be lots of pics and posts from me or not this weekend but, I apologise in advance if I get a bit carried away. Normality should be restored by Sunday evening.

Pics are likely to be posted:

- here in this collection
- instagram.com/jimnicbutdimm
- Snapchat: jimnicebutdim

Good luck to all taking part (although perhaps slightly more good luck for those who are on the Resistance side ;P) and should you see me by all means come over and say hello.

Human drives out of drive onto road. Cat in road. Human swerves to avoid cat and rolls car. Cat unhurt and stays on scene for 2 hours.

"The cat's fine. It sat there for the full two hours while I was out in the street," he said.

"The cat met the police, the cat met the fire brigade, the cat watched me make a call to insurance to organise someone to pick the car up."

Surely a sign of why cats are evil. Either a devious plan to get attention from humans or it stayed there to gloat at the damage caused.

Confirmation from the official Android blog that the staged rollout to Nexus devices of Nougat has begun and will be happening over the next few weeks.

Post also contains info of some of the new bits in Nougat.

If you don't have a Nexus device then don't complain to Google about it not getting Nougat, either ever or not for 6 months or more, complain to the phone manufacturers who will metaphorically bend and fold Nougat so it works on your phone's and then further delay might be caused by your phone company as they fiddle with it a bit before releasing it.

Yet another example why, if you can buy a Nexus, you should.

A Finnish folk song from one of this year's BBC Proms.

Despite my family link to the creation of the proms (I'm somehow a descendent of Sir Henry Wood who conducted the first season of what would become the BBC Proms), I tend to find the Proms quite boring (I suspect we can now power the whole UK off the spinning corpse of Sir Henry Wood).

But, I do like the bits where they bring a bit of humour to the proms such as in this piece.

Ever wondered what actors get up to in between filming or when off doing the press junkets in the bits between the interviews?

Well, for a number of the cast of the latest Star Trek film they spent at least some of the time making videos using the dubsmash app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobilemotion.dubsmash) if this compilation is anything to go by.

Saw the one +Selina Kyle did, and decided to give it a go.

Let's take a break from politics and learn about each other!

1. Are you named after someone?
Yes. My first name is the middle name of my father and his father. My first middle name is from someone my dad knew at school (although intriguingly, he's never spoken to me about this person and doesn't seem to want to talk about them when asked) it's also what my dad originally wanted to be my first name. My second middle name is my dad's first name.

2. When is the last time you cried?
A few days before I had what the doctor later diagnosed as a stress induced episode.

3. Do you like your handwriting?
It's atrocious.

4. What is your favorite lunch meat?

3. Do you like your handwriting?
It's atrocious.

4. What is your favorite lunch meat?
Ham

5. Do you have kids?
No

6. If you were another person, would you be friends with you?
I'm not sure.

7. Do you use sarcasm?
Occasionally. Although more often than not I won't say it or type it because whilst it makes sense in my head, not all of my sarcastic comments are seen as such and are seen by some as me being an Ahole

8. Do you still have your tonsils?
Nope, had them taken out when I was 11 or 12.

9. Would you bungee jump?
Nope.

10. What is your favorite cereal?
They used to be called Toppas when I was growing up but, now called Frosted Shredded Wheat. Although due to me becoming lactose intolerant just over a year ago, I haven't had cereal since.

11. Do you untie your shoes, when you take them off?
Yes. It's a bit difficult to remove steel toe capped boots with out untieing them.

12. Do you think you are strong?
Physically: sort of (not as strong as I used to be when i used to move the full beer barrels (11 and 22 gallon barrels) around the cellar at work).
Emotionally: yes to a point.

13. What is your favorite ice cream?
It's one of the Ben & Jerry's ice creams but, I can't remember it's name right now. (UPDATE: it's called Save Our Swirled)

14. What is the first thing you notice about people?
I don't think there is one thing in particular.

15. Red or pink?
Well, seeing as I'm Welsh and the colour for the national sports teams is red, I'll choose red.

16. What is the least favorite thing you like about yourself?
Varies

17. What color pants and shoes are you wearing right now?
Black and I'm not wearing any shoes.

18. What was the last thing you ate?
Home made (with help of an off the shelf kit) tacos.

19. What are you listening to, right now?
Nothing.

20. If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
Red

21. Favorite smell?
Fresh cut grass, smell of rain, vanilla.

22. Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone?
My mum

23. Favorite sport to watch?
Either Rugby Union or Cycling.

24. Real hair color?
Dark brown

25. Eye color?
Brown

26. Do you wear contacts?
Nope. Have worn glasses since I was either 1.5 or 2 years old.

27. Favorite food to eat?
Varies. At the moment it's the Haggis which the local supermarket sells.

28. Scary movies or happy endings?
Happy endings ( I'm not really a big fan of horror/scary movies (with the exception of Zombieland))

29. Last movie you watched?
Zootropolis

30. What color shirt are you wearing?
Red

31. Summer or Winter?
Both have their good bits and bad bits so, I'll cheat and say both

32. Hugs or kisses?
Hugs or as we call them in Welsh, cwtches. (UPDATE: I've been told that the way cwtch is pronounced in Welsh is also the way a slang word for vagina is pronounced in at least one part of California)

33. What book are you currently reading?
I'm not reading anything at the moment in book form.

35. What is on your mouse pad?
Nothing. I don't use one. My mouse works fine without one.

36. What is the last TV programme you watched?
Star Trek: Deep Space 9. I'm not the world's biggest fan of Star Trek but, I did use to watch DS9 as a kid but, one of the problems of having only 1 TV in the house was that when dad came home from work either just as it started or somewhere in the middle, the channel had to be changed to the news so, I missed large bits of the story. Courtesy of Netflix, 20+ years later I've been able to fill in the gaps.

37. Favorite sound?
It varies. Whilst I generally have no problem with being in busy crowded spaces, I do appreciate being able to get away from everything and have some silence. I'm not always brilliant if I can't remove myself from a noisy environment ( is why I dislike festival No.6 and all the noise that will be coming across the estuary from there(sadly it's in 2 weekends time and not the weekend I'm in Birmingham)). Having said that, there's certain music that's designed to be played loud and I have been known to crank the volume up.

38. Rolling Stones or The Beatles?
Both and neither. I don't think that either are the greatest ever but, I do like some of the stuff they've done.

39. What is the farthest you have traveled?
Furthest as in time would most probably be Aberystwyth to London (by either car or train) but, in mileage terms, that journey might be beaten by London to Paris when I went by Eurostar train for the day.

40. Do you have a special talent?
Not particularly

41. Where were you born?
Well, if the snow had been any worse, it might have been the home I grew up in, a car stuck in a snow drift or even possibly the back of a helicopter but, dad managed to get mum to the hospital in Aberystwyth. Mum was the last to be driven in. All the other expectant mothers that came in after her for a period of time had to be flown in by helicopter due to the snow (there were 6 foot snow drifts in the village I grew up in).___

Just received a nice summery email from +Natural Resources Wales / Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru

Fortunately whilst the village is low enough it could be affected, there's a sea wall between the estuary and the village which will hopefully do its usual job of keeping the water on the right side of it.

UPDATE: If you'd prefer to hear the warning as it was on my answer machine then click the link - https://plus.google.com/+JimWall/posts/1sq46RgPRY7

Not something you see everyday, an Osprey aircraft just flew past whilst I was sat at Machynlleth train station.

What makes the Osprey aircraft unique is that the rotors in the wing can rotate 90 degrees meaning it can fly like a helicopter or a plane.

I had Google Music playing on random yesterday and it went and played this tune.

I currently have fragments of it stuck in my head and going round and round. The number of Biddy's my brain has said this morning is too damn much.

Help.

Today's the day that T. E. Lawrence aka Lawrence of Arabia was born.

For an extra bonus fact, he was born in Tremadog ( just outside Porthmadog) in North West Wales.

With T.E. Lawrence #bornonthisday in 1881, there's no better time to revisit David Lean's dazzling desert epic.___Today's the day that T. E. Lawrence aka Lawrence of Arabia was born.

Have to admit, I'm not quite sure what the point of registering for Duo and Allo is.

I mistakenly thought that it meant (seeing as I registered not long after registration opened) that I'd be one of the first ones to get to have a go with the apps (yes I know Allo wasn't released today) but, the pic below is all I see when I go to the page for the Duo app.

2 weeks worth of traingressing ( aka playing Ingress from the train), up and down the west Wales coast via the Cambrian Coast Line.

I think the local greens must be off on holiday because I wouldn't normally get to do all the fielding around Tywyn and Machynlleth.

Must point out that I wasn't on the train all of that 2 weeks, it was only 6 or 7 trips along the coast.

Google is starting to to roll out the Duo app today (will apparently take a few days for world wide rollout).

Unless I've misunderstood Apple's Facetime, it would seem that Google are planning to have Duo as their rival to it. Unlike Facetime, Duo is available on both Android and iOS devices.

For more information, see the official blog post from Google below.

This is a trailer for their new comedy show which will be available on Netflix in the UK on August 26th

First became aware of them when I stumbled across a copy of The Blue Collar Comedy Tour over 10 years ago.

New tune from Green Day.

Lyric videos quite often get put out because the official video hasn't been made yet. They are usually just a static image or a bit of animation thrown together.

This video is labeled as a lyric video but, I would have thought it was decent enough to be the actual video for the song.

Squirrel! Most awesome squirrelcam after a bushy-tailed critter grabbed a GoPro and ran around in the treetops filming
This is possibly the coolest thing I've seen all day.
I wonder if I could get a spider to carry a GoPro...

When my +Freesat box asked if it could collect and send anonymous data back to +Freesat I thought it was just for monitoring the software updates and for perhaps beta testing software and features.

Turns out that as well as possibly those things, they're going to use it record as it happens viewing figures as well as other viewing data.

e.g. Simon Cowell can see almost instantly how many people change channel when one of his programmes comes on the telly. ;P

For more info and a better explanation see the press release in .PDF form at the other end of the link

In case after the last 2 posts you were wondering what else I listen to in podcast form in varying degrees of regularity and usually whilst travelling on trains or your just looking for new podcasts to try out then, here in pictorial form are all the podcasts I'm currently subscribed to via Pocket Casts.

Some are regular, some aren't. Others are done in series form so, you might have to wait a bit until there's new stuff but, hopefully there's enough of the back catalogue to keep you entertained until the new stuff appears.

Always on the look out for new stuff so, feel free to lob suggestions into the comments section.
