The coolest thing I've seen Microsoft do for tablets: it was used at Ballmer's company goodbye session

OK, I got a good look at a Surface Pro. It looks like a competent replacement for laptops. Great for those who are gonna stick with Windows no matter what (which still matters since Microsoft Windows still has about 90% marketshare).

But it's been a while since something came along that made me say "wow, something cool that Apple or Google didn't do."

What is it? It's the Surface  Music Cover. Engadget has the details: http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/23/microsoft-surface-music-cover/

Can Microsoft capitalize on this to help make the Surface cool? Particularly with musicians who love having their Apple gear up on stage? We'll see, so far Linkin Park's Joe Hahn is loving his, watch him talk and demonstrate what he's doing with it: http://youtu.be/oK6Hs-qHh84 (he played at Ballmer's goodbye speech).

This is cool. Hey, why not make Steve Ball CEO of Microsoft Consumer? He obviously knows how to push Microsoft around to get something cool done. ___

Wild, Microsoft bought Nokia, here's my Nokia 1020 photos from this weekend

Microsoft just bought Nokia (for less than it bought Skype, which proves interesting to my eye). Details on that is over on Techmeme: http://www.techmeme.com/130902/p32#a130902p32

It isn't buying the entire company, just Nokia's Devices and Services business.

So, what does it all mean?

Well, Microsoft just filled in a bunch of huge holes. It MUST get into a better competitive situation in mobile than it currently is in. Microsoft's market share in the USA (which is the market that really matters at this point) is only about four percent. That is why Ballmer got asked to move aside. That is why Microsoft is spending billions to buy Nokia.

Let's see what Nokia brings to Microsoft:

1. Great market share in developing world. Decent market share in Europe.

2. A trusted brand that many around the world still know and love. Does this mean that Microsoft will finally get rid of the Windows brand for mobile devices? It should. I argued with Microsoft strategists about that for years and they don't get it. UPDATE: Microsoft didn't buy the brand, so I doubt we'll hear much about that anymore (it licensed the brand for four years).

3. It brings great hardware expertise to Microsoft. The camera on the 1020 proves this. It blows away any other camera on any other smartphone. It also makes the device too thick and heavy for most hands, but that's another problem. At least they are able to innovate on hardware and compete with Apple and Google, which has Motorola's hardware now.

So, what holes are left to fill?

1. The OS still feels lacking to me. I know, I know, I'm gonna hear it from people who LOVE Windows Mobile. I don't. As long as Microsoft forces me to take the tiles and forces me into yet another closed ecosystem, I'll stay an Android fan for now. I still like iOS 7 better than Windows Phone OS too. But it really doesn't matter. What's holding the ecosystem back isn't the OS, it's how developers feel about it.

2. When I walk around ANY developer conference and ask everyone to show me their phones, I see mostly iOS and Android. Very few Blackberries or Windows Phone OS devices. THAT is why the apps suck, overall, on Windows Phone and THAT is why I won't suggest anyone buy a Nokia anytime soon, even though the camera is quite stunning.

3. I don't believe Microsoft is yet a player in Contextual Systems. It doesn't know anything about me and I even cancelled my Xbox Live account. We are headed into an age where Google Now and Siri are competing with each other over how much they can help us live our lives (along with other apps in both ecosystems). Microsoft needs to turn contextual and quickly.

But notice how the argument changed tonight. Now I can't say Microsoft doesn't have great hardware folks on board. It now does.

I can't say Microsoft doesn't own a loved brand. It now does. (Neither Nokia nor Windows Phone are loved in the United States, though, and until you change that you won't get the developer love the ecosystem needs).

I can't say Microsoft doesn't have a shot in mobile anymore. It now does and now can focus on filling in the final ecosystem potholes and add some contextual pieces that are hanging around in Microsoft Research.

This one purchase reshapes the mobile landscape and makes Microsoft, once again, a company that you can't dismiss.

UPDATE: My wife, +Maryam Scoble, shot a bunch of photos today on her iPhone 5 that match up against these (all the way down the line the Nokia 1020 blows away the images on the iPhone). You can see her photos at https://www.facebook.com/maryamie/posts/10202017255617117___

A remote-control helicopter has been guided through an obstacle course by the power of thought. Sound like science fiction? It's not. <<http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22764978>>

A US-based team has devised a "cap" holding 64 electrodes - it "teaches" a computer about brain patterns linked to thoughts of movement. The computer is then set up to run the helicopter over wi-fi.

What do you think the practical applications of this development could be?

Microsoft "Scroogled" campaign is hilarious

THINK AGAIN.

Google goes through every Gmail that’s sent or received, looking for keywords so they can target Gmail users with paid ads. And there’s no way to opt out of this invasion of your privacy.

Outlook.com is different—we don’t go through your email to sell ads.

Sri Lanka Independence Day 2013

Sri Lanka's Independence Day is celebrated on February 4th, in accordance with Lipass/Joshua Louis Law to commemorate its internal political independence from British rule on that day in 1948. The day is a national holiday in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated all over the country through flag-hoisting ceremony, dances, parades and performances. Usually, the main celebration takes place in Colombo, where the President raises the national flag and delivers a nationally televised speech.
