Charles Lupica66,461             Top 1000 most followed active        photographers sharing content on G+                  Circle One: A to JThis  is the first of two circles,  I'll share the second circle this weekend so that they're not so on top of each other.  The circles have been divided alphabetically to help give more exposure to people with fewer followers. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated. It has been two weeks since I announced my intent to update my circle of the 500 most followed photographers on G+.  I decided to do things a bit differently this time and so I'll share the top 1000.   To build the circles and the list I enlisted the aid of +Bill Wood +Gemma Costa +Jen Baptist +Kat Scan and +Margaret Tompkins.  They built circles and vetted profiles.  My starting point for this was a list of 2000 names generously provided to me by +CircleCount.  Thank you all for all of your help.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the contents of what will be in the two circles. The script / finding namesThe script is provided by CircleCount and looks through the tagline of every profile on CircleCount to find the word "photo" or "foto".  If a photographer doesn't have a CircleCount profile they won't be found.  If one of these two words isn't in their tagline, they won't be found.  A few people I know have fallen into this flaw in my thinking.  To fix this, CircleCount has asked me to provide a "whitelist" of names that the script misses.  The white-list list adds another 30 or so names to the result. How was the list processedThe list was sorted by the level of activity.  People that hadn't posted in the last month (approximately April 5 to May 5th) were removed from the list.  This included people that hadn't posted or people that had posted only once in the past 4 weeks.  Again, this has some flaws but I'm mostly happy with the results.  People who are posting only in private communities or people that interact a lot with other people but don't post their own work will get filtered out along with the people that aren't really active.  ValidationThese two circles were very heavily vetted.  Of the original 2000 names, nearly 35% do not appear in either circle.  This is a result of the filtering I mentioned above and vetting of ever single profile in the list until we had enough names to make a list of 1000 names.  The list was divided into 6 parts with Bill Wood, Gemma Costa, Jen Baptist, Kat Scan, Margaret Tompkins and me each taking a group of names.  I tried to assign the list so that the pe2013-05-16 16:41:2850113479149

Sorry! :)At nearly 1000, my art circle is bursting at the seams. It's too big to share on it's own anymore, so I thought I'd break it down into several smaller circles, to share over a period of days. These people fill my streams with visual imagery, sometimes beautiful, experimental, evocative... each one has a unique perspective and practice. Most of these people are painters, drawers, illustrators, sculptors, etc. (I generally keep my photogs in a separate circle, with a few exceptions, for good measure. So yes, this circle is a different beast.)The desire to connect with other artists is what brought me to G+, and it is a huge part of why I am still here.****************************************************************************A note about this circle, and my sharing it.Every time I share a circle, I get a backlash of anger from people that are not in it. Honestly, it is to the point that I rarely share circles. Please know that this circle is not all of the artists that you should be following here on Google+, it is simply the artists that I follow. I have chosen them for personal reasons, and enjoy following each of them. I am sharing them because I believe that you may also enjoy following them. This circle reflects my choices, of whom to follow, please be respectful of that. If you are an artist, and not in my circles, please feel free to say hi and let me know in the comments, so that I can mosey on over to your profile and see your work! #art #creativity #sharedcircles  2012-08-16 16:59:1710610523

Thomas Hawk2,461,0112,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev)This is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the first circle and includes photographers with the last name's A-Ev (although +Marc Evans you are in tomorrow's circle).  A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably 2012-06-04 16:53:26500226139424
Jadey A-S Wilson3,457My Artists/Writers CircleI suppose it's a little late for Circle Sunday in most parts of the world but I've been meaning to share this mixed Circle for quite a while. Some of the people within it are purely artists, others are writers, but so many are both that I've never really sat down to sort them out into separate ones. A great number of the people here are wonderful engagers, as long as Masters of their crafts – which are often many and varied. Others are more reticent, but that might well just be my experience – yours may differ...Any road, I hope you'll find some interesting and inspiring people within this group:+Loren Groves _; you were looking for artists and +Lord Parker; I've owed you some Circle shares for a long time, here's a start._2012-06-04 04:14:51246611

Alik Griffin5,462PhotographersSo I think I've finally got a pretty solid circle of photographers ready to share. I've been refining this for the last month, adding photographers who have a good eye and aesthetic that I think are good. I like photography that takes you places and allows you to see people and things from all parts of the world from perspectives you've never seen before. I think many of the photographers in this circle do that very well. These are all very active G+ users and should provide your stream with some really nice content. If you are new to G+ you can start growing your network and enhancing your stream with with some of googles greatest. Please share.#photography #photographers #sharedcircles #artists2012-04-13 00:13:54485383034

Thomas Hawk846,3871,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (A-G, Part 1 of 3)1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (A-G, Part 1 of 3) http://goo.gl/WGdFw1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (G-O, Part 2 of 3) http://goo.gl/1yiS61,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (P-Z, Part 3 of 3) http://goo.gl/6nLZEI've shared my photographers circle on Google+ two times now. Once when it got to 500 and then again when it got to 1,000. Today my circle hit 1,500 so I'm sharing them again.I have to break them up into 500 person circles because this is the limit on Google+. Also Google limits the number of people you can add to circles per day so I'm going to publish my kick ass photographers circle over 3 days. Today I'm publishing A-G. Tomorrow I'll publish G-O. Friday I'll publish P-Z. By last name.In addition to the kick ass photographers in these circles I've also added three other accounts. Our new photography hangout show which will be on live tonight at 8PM PST +Photo Talk Plus as well as our show's sponsors +Drobo and +SmugMug as a way of saying thanks to them.A few notes about these circles. not to be long-winded, but…Every time I've shared my circles I've gotten haters from it. People who are upset that they are not in them. I absolutely detest that. It makes me not even want to share them because of that. These circles are not meant to be the definitive list of what photographers you should be following on Google+. These circles are simply who I have chosen to follow for photography on Google+ for my own personal consumption. I want to share them because I think YOU may also benefit from having these rich, talented, kick ass photographers in your streams. This is the circle that I browse every single day looking for great stuff to +1 and comment on Google+ and as such it reflects my own personal biases. For example. I hate looking at watermarks. This is a personal preference thing. If you use them, more power to you. It's absolutely your right. But as a consumer of photography I find them ugly and distracting and so I tend not to follow people who use them. This is not a big deal. This is not a personal attack against you if you watermark. This isn't even a universal rule of mine. I do have a few friends who use them that I still follow. But by and large, what you get with my circles is a watermark/signature free circle. I also prefer people who are active on Google+ both in terms of posting and in terms of contributing to the community. If the last photo you posted was in November, I probably won't have you in this list.If you were in my photographers circle before but removed, it could be for a lot of these sorts of reasons. Watermarks/sigs, not posting enough, posting too much non photography stuff that I'm not interested in, or all kinds of other things. Who knows. But it's most definitely not personal. (Unless I'm blocking you and then maybe it is personal). Also if you are not in these circles it may simply be because we don't know each other yet. In time perhaps we will become great friends (hopefully). Or you may not be in these circles just 2012-01-18 23:20:26500193111261

Amy McLeod1,986Ok, I have recently expanded my articulate and engaged circle with circles other people have given out of people that are interested in or actively participating in the Occupy movement. I'm not guaranteeing everyone I'm sharing here, as 900 odd people is a bit much to go through. These are people who would normaly be all over the political spectrum, but all interested in the the problems with out of control finance and it's corruption of goverment, they will certainly hold many views totally contrary to yours on many issues, but on this issue they are the 99%. I can't even guarantee that everyone in this circle is what I've stated above, I just took on trust the circles that have been shared to me and added them to people I had circled as articulate and engaged before Occupy took off, some of them may even be incomprehensible and disinterested, feel free to sort through them yourself if you have time, but I'd urge you not to exclude anyone just because their views are the polar opposite of yours on other issues. 99% is more important than any other divide and on this one thing both left and right should be united.First 500 are here.Amy McLeod shared a circle with you.2011-10-19 15:12:51500301

I watched The Imposter yesterday, I'm completely blown away by it. Extremely persuasive filmmaking, incredible blend of real life footage and dramatization, it's not just a purely informative documentary but it takes you on a ride, manipulates you over and over, and keeps you intrigued the whole time. If you don't know about this case (of a guy who pretended to be a missing kid, and took his place on the family), don't look deeper into it yet... First, watch this film (it's on Netflix), because there are huge surprises that are better if you see them on the film rather than reading about it first. Seriously, watch it, it's extremely smart filmmaking, fascinating story.

I took this at our hotel in Mariposa, they had a few hummingbird feeders on the back. I think it is Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna), but I'm not sure, it's hard to tell without the full plumage or seeing the back. Anyone know any better?

The real reason why I started walking down into the Wawona Tunnel was because we saw some smaller drainage tunnels on the sides. I walked until I found one, crawled through the rough tunnel until I saw a fence blocking the path to an abyss, with a huge drop below and the stars above. Of course, I had to jump the little gate to get a shot from the opposite side. When taking this shot, I was standing just two feet from the edge of the pitch black cliff. I shone my iPhone flashlight onto my t-shirt to get a little diffused bounce light from the camera's side.

I didn't know about the incredible Shoshone Point at the Grand Canyon until this last trip. Easy 20 minute hike, the best views by far, and less people than at the other vista points, since it's not show on maps or signs.

We thought we wouldn't get to see anything because of the rain, but it cleared out eventually.

Very good use of hyperlapse and editing. A lot of these types of videos tend to be a collection of moments, and very few link the shots together with good analogies of images and by using directional motion from shot to shot to drive the cut. It's a bit overdone with the slow-fast style, and Ludovico Einaudi for music seems to become a cliché after it being used so often lately, but I think this works great to condense the essence of this  little chunk of the world. http://vimeo.com/108018156

Antelope Canyon in black and white. This photo didn't work so well in color, but it had so much detail I wanted to use it in some way. "Fez" is available for free for Playstation Plus members. Go get it guys. I just finished it, it's sort of transcendental in a silly way, truly a masterpiece of gaming. It's worth trying to get all of the achievements, though you will never do it without some sort of help online. I did as much as possible on my own, and then had to get solutions to the super hardcore stuff online.

Sunset from Glacier Point. This is the big camera pic, as opposed to the iPhone pic I posted while on the trip. Sunrise at Alstrom Point, in the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area, looking down at Gunsight Bay and Lake Powell. I'll be posting pics from this weekend's camping trip through the next days.

Twelve of us camped at Alstrom Point, and a few of us woke up extra early to off-road into this overlook for a fantastic sunrise, in complete isolation. It's like a view of the Grand Canyon, but half submerged, and without the hundreds of tourists around you. The only other people around where down by the lake, their boats appearing as miniscule dots and the people so small they weren't even visible. Despite the stretching distance, the stillness and silence allowed us to barely hear them cooking their breakfast, far away.

Another pic from 2012. +Timothy Dahlum in Yubari, in the island of Hokkaido, Japan. We were there for the Yubari Film Festival, freezing to death in the mountains during an outdoor cookout offered by all the locals, with tons of sake, ramen, soba, and a bunch of other awesome local things.

The road to Alstrom Point has some insane moonscapes. There are huge areas of gray dry clay on Smokey Mountain Road. We were in a hurry, and had another truck following us a bit slower, so we would stop in these spots and I'd run to snap a few quick pics and run back into our truck before the other truck could catch up to us. I wish I had more time there to get good pictures.

The clay was brittle, I climbed to the edge of a ridge and it felt like the whole ridge would collapse, dropping a ton of loose dry clay below me.

At Glacier Point after sunset. This was actually taken from the area a bit closer to the parking, where they have a geological exhibit. Some stars were beginning to show. You can see Nevada Falls on the lower right, and Vernal Falls just cutting off frame on the bottom, that's where I took that long hike to a few days later.

We almost waited here for the moon to come out, but decided to just head back, it would've taken several more hours. We got some better shots later that evening anyway.

Another moonscape around Smokey Mountain Road. It's so desaturated. Look at this satellite view of the exact same location, it's a spoonful of Moon in a sea of Mars. There are other blotches of gray around too if you zoom out.

Mono Lake is a very special place to me, because it was one of the main stops when Timothy and I took our first crazy roadtrip together. On our original roadtrip, this cemetery overlooking Mono Lake was covered in snow, and was eerily quiet and lonely. It's been almost 4 years since then! I had to come back and take a pic of this gravestone and statue. Here is the original video I shot 4 years ago:

I took this at our hotel in Mariposa, they had a few hummingbird feeders on the back. I think it is Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna), but I'm not sure, it's hard to tell without the full plumage or seeing the back. Anyone know any better?

We went to Antelope Canyon, where the group did the group tour and I paid a bit extra to have the photographer's pass (that way you have more time, and can go on your own, at your own pace). The light was great for the first few minutes, streaming down the slot canyon, but it went away very fast.

There were too many tourists around, it would be better to come back in winter and have the place empty to set up for better shots.

Another sunrise pic from Alstrom Point, with the sun over Gunsight Bay. This was just seconds after the other pic I posted, but the light quality was entirely different already. The really good light is there for only a breath.

There was no wind at all, so I was able to get a multiple exposure with the foreground plant without it turning blurry.

More from Antelope Canyon. There are so many incredible shapes in there, but despite that, it's really hard to get a good composition. I have a ton of pics, where the walls look amazing, but the flow of shapes is too chaotic.

I liked this one, it had a clear focal point, and the shapes flowed into each other better. I merged in HDR from several shots, so they clouds look a bit doubled and weird, but whatevs.

Disney is hiring Layout Apprentices again. This is the same program I started with 4 years ago, I highly recommend it. You don't need previous work experience, it can be right after school, but you need a killer portfolio focused on camera/cinematography as much as possible. For me, the portfolio was basically Sebastian's Voodoo, since it's a very cinematic film and showed lots of different uses of camera and staging in there. You can apply here: http://www.disneyanimation.com/careers/open-positions

Right before we left our camp towards the Alstrom Point vista for sunrise. That's my tent, but some slept out without tents just in their bags, or the back of the trucks. We woke up about 20 minutes to sunrise, just barely made it to the spot about a minute before the sun rose. It was nice to come back and find the rest of the camp already cooking breakfast, I felt kind of guilty though...
