The Meoto Iwa, or "Married Couple Rocks," in Futami, near Ise in Mie Prefecture, are joined by a heavy rice straw rope and considered sacred by worshippers at the nearby Futami Okitama Shrine. They are said to represent the union of Shinto's highest deities, Izanagi and Izanami. The rope weighs over one ton and must be replaced several times per year. It's a popular shrine for couples and when conditions are right, Mt Fuji can be seen in the distance.
