Today is the 25th anniversary of the Linux-0.01 release, I do believe.

Normally the anniversary is counted from the announcement email (August 25), because that was the actual public statement of intent. The 0.01 code drop happened a couple of weeks later, and wasn't publicly announced.

City of Toulouse Drops Microsoft Office for LibreOffice and Saves €1 Million ($1.34 Million)

More and more European cities are moving away from proprietary solutions to open source software in order to save money and to encourage people to use free applications. Cities from Germany, Italy, and Portugal made some very difficult choices and managed to adopt various open source solutions.

Getting rid of proprietary software and installing a free application might seem simple enough, but in fact there are also some costs that need to be taken into consideration. If the city of Toulouse was using Microsoft Office, for example, all they had to do in order to get a new version was to pay for the updates and that would be pretty much it.

“Software licenses for productivity suites cost Toulouse 1.8 million euro every three years. Migration cost us about 800,000 euro, due partly to some development. One million euro has actually been saved in the first three years. It is a compelling proof in the actual context of local public finance,” also says Erwane Monthuber, the person responsible with Toulouse's IT policy.___

There are so many small computers that can 'destroy' the Raspberry Pi (like the Odroid C2), but this one ... well except for a few small things, the community backing, the price (to get this to work you'll be paying $157), and that the Pi is non-profit.... but yeah, nice specs but not so sure it's a destroyer.

SolidRun x86 Braswell MicroSoM runs Linux and full Windows 10, destroys Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi is popular for three major reasons -- it is small, inexpensive, and doesn't consume a lot of electricity. This makes the board very popular for things like education, servers, IoT projects, and media playback. Unfortunately, as many consumers find out quickly, the Raspberry Pi computers are woefully underpowered for some needs. In other words, despite the low cost, it isn't necessarily a bargain.

Today, SolidRun announces an Intel Braswell-based MicroSoM. Unlike the ARM-powered Raspberry Pi, this is x86 compatible, meaning it can run full Windows 10. Plus, if you install a Linux distro, there will be far more packages available, such as Google Chrome, which is not available for Pi. Heck, it can probably serve as a respectable desktop. Even though it costs more than the Raspberry Pi, is it a better deal?

Although it may be four times the price of a Raspberry Pi.... All in all, it comes down to what you need. If you need an x86-based mini computer, the ARM-based Raspberry Pi at any price is not a good deal.
