A long-covered 12th century mosaic angel reappears.

Silvia Starinieri, a young restoration technician, was slowly passing a thermographic camera over the smooth plaster walls of the Church of the Nativity, the traditional birthplace of Jesus Christ, when she spotted an intriguing shape.

As she and her colleagues began painstakingly scraping away the plaster, a radiant face emerged, illuminated by mother-of-pearl. When the team saw the first golden tiles of a shimmering halo, “it was a very emotional moment,” says Starinieri, 28.

Beneath the plaster stood an eight-foot-tall angel, lost for centuries but now rediscovered and reunited with six other angels that watch over pilgrims in one of the oldest churches in Christendom.___A long-covered 12th century mosaic angel reappears.

One of our Google+ regulars was there yesterday - and got some really great photos of the space shuttle fuel tank being offloaded in Los Angeles from a barge and onto a trailer to make its journey to the California Science Museum to join the shuttle Endeavor on display. Why is this significant? Here's what the LA times says:

"Once part of a fleet of 136 external fuel tanks that flew during the shuttle program, ET-94 is the last remaining flight-ready tank in existence. The tanks detach from the shuttle and break up in the atmosphere.

"ET-94 was the so-called sister to ET-93, the tank of the space shuttle Columbia, which broke apart and burned up on reentry in 2003, killing the seven astronauts on board. ET-94 was examined extensively in the investigation into what went wrong and was never sent into space.

This morning I got a front-row seat watching the last Space Shuttle fuel tank arrive via barge in Marina del Rey after its sea journey from New Orleans that began April 12. I posted some of these earlier, but here is the album of a lot more of the pictures I took as they off-loaded the barge and brought the tank into the parking lot. This weekend, it will make the final 12-mie leg of its journey to the +California Science Center in downtown Los Angeles, where it will eventually be joined with Endeavor.___One of our Google+ regulars was there yesterday - and got some really great photos of the space shuttle fuel tank being offloaded in Los Angeles from a barge and onto a trailer to make its journey to the California Science Museum to join the shuttle Endeavor on display.
