X-Pro1 w 56mm f1.2 vs X-T1 w 60mm f2.4

So I have a dilemma, and, while I think I know what I'm going to do, I thought I'd pose this to the community as one final check.

I've been shooting with an x100s for the last year and a bit, and just recently added the TCL to give myself a bit of extra reach. But I've got a wedding coming up at the end of the month, and I need a second body. My wife's X-E1 isn't going to cut it (I can't deal with the EVF on it for outdoor scenes) and so I've narrowed it to the X-Pro and the X-T1.

I know the obvious answer is go with the newer body (especially with all those lovely dials and the newer, better AF) BUT...I also need a good portrait lens, and at a focal length longer than the TCL on my x100s gives me. I'd love the 56 f1.2, but if I buy that lens, I can only afford the X-Pro. If I buyt... more »

Bought my first Chromebook in 2 years today...Holy crap things have changed!

It's been awhile since I've used a Chromebook. I was a huge enthusiast in 2011-12 when they first hit market (even getting a friend to smuggle an early Series 5 into Canada so I could get an early taste) but kind of forgot about them as tablet productivity options boomed and decent Ultrabooks came down in price.

Last weekend I experienced a tech apocalypse; phone, smartwatch, and tablet/laptop all died horribly. I managed to get a decent, inexpensive replacement for my phone, which I'm quite pleased with. But I didn't have the budget to replace my Lenovo Helix with anything that would come close to doing the same job.

So I weighed my options and tried out a couple of devices. First, a Nexus 9 and keyboard dock; didn't like the light leak, the battery life, or the cramped typing experience. The iPad mini presented better battery life and build quality, but getting any work done (writing, photo editing, etc) was a miserable experience, even with the best keyboard cover I could find.

I looked at some inexpensive Windows convertibles and decided I just couldn’t bring myself to carry around a deliberately scaled down Windows experience. I’ve tried before and the frustration…it gets ugly.

But then I remembered how much I’d loved Chromebooks when they first came out. I’d spent the equivalent of days worth of research time back in 2011-12 finding the best solutions for replacing the native programs I was used to using, and to cultivating the perfect mix of Chrome extensions and apps. I’d set up an Ubuntu dual boot on that first Series 5 so that, if I ran into things in the field that I just could not do in Chrome OS, I wouldn’t need a backup device. I was committed and it was great, until I forgot how good it was.

So I strolled over to the notebook section at Best Buy and saw the HP Chromebook 14, and fell immediately in love. Beautiful finish, spacious keyboard, and finally a screen that didn’t feel cramped. So I bought it, took it to work and logged in. And it was like I’d never left. Except everything was so much better. The search key is now a valuable asset. The desktop makes sense. There are actually really solid offline apps for document creation and photo editing (I actually paid for my first Chrome app ever today). In short, Chrome OS feels like a big boy platform now. My only complaint is that the option of adding OneDrive as a storage source just does not work for me.

I’m happy to say that, in 2015, I can finally recommend a Chromebook as a daily driver to the vast majority of users needing a lightweight but effective mobile computing solution.___

Here's a question. Why is it that touch scrolling in Chrome on my Windows 8 laptop with 8gb of ram onboard is choppy and unpleasant, but on a 2gb chromebook it's smoother than on any tablet?

If I buyt... more »

I know the 60mm has some AF issues; does anyone know if those have been smoothed out by the better AF on the X-T1?

What would you do?___
