I'm really liking this article. Let's quote a few paragraphs:

{...] the workforce disadvantages women in subtler ways — ways that ultimately show up in their paycheck but don’t always begin there. The highest-paying jobs disproportionately reward those who can work the longest, least flexible hours.

Quite true that. I once sat in Hobee's (a local restaurant chain) and overheard a man trying to recruit a woman to work. "What would it take to get your total commitment?" he asked. It chilled me, honestly.

These types of job penalize workers who have caregiving responsibilities outside the workplace. Those workers tend to be women.

This language wins for me very strongly. First, it's quite true that caregivers tend to be women. But they are not exclusively women. My father was a caregiver (He and my mother have long since passed away, but not until recently did I realize how serious her bipolar was, and how much he did to care for her.) I am a caregiver. It has cost me significantly. The language here of "tends to be" does not exclude me or Dad in the way more black-and-white language ("these workers are women") does.___

Man sentenced for sexual harassment via internet trolling
A Sydney man was charged with using a carrier service to threaten and harass, after a vicious Facebook comment thread where he had threatened to rape women, and was generally acting like the typical misogynistic offensive male internet troll who thinks it's safe to make hateful comments from behind the safety of a computer screen.

But in this case, the women in question took screenshots and reported the incident to the police. They took the case to court and successfully pursued it, stating that while this kind of behaviour is so common online that it's tiresome, it's time to stand up and make it clear - these comments aren't funny - they are abuse, pure and simple, and such abusive comments online only engenders abuse in real life

Change starts here.

Million dollar sharks!
The headline says it all, really. What happens when a small country realises the economic benefit in protecting it's wildlife far outstrips letting it be plundered.

It's time again for the monthly message of thanks to my many supporters and fans on social media! I truly appreciate every single one of you awesome people!

Along with that message comes the reminder that I have several ways for you to support the work I do here at the Self-Rescuing Princess Society researching stories for blog posts and sharing positive stories all over social media featuring women and girls who kick ass.

Even as little as $1 a month is welcome, and will earn you one of the brand new little buttons for you to proudly proclaim your ability to rescue yourself, thank you very much!

While I do what I do because I believe in sharing the inspirational stories I naturally tend to seek out, it still takes time and energy to run this page (so many comments to moderate!). So I'm asking if you find something here you feel is worthwhile, please consider showing that support financially.

I had been hoping to reach a very modest goal of $150 a month, but I recently had a major supporter have to drop out due to unemployment and a loss of income. Instead, at this point, I'm hoping to hit $130 for July. That's only $12 a month more than I'm getting now. That's just 12 people pledging $1 each. Totally do-able, right?

As always, if you cannot afford to support me financially, that's OK too. I'd like to remind you, though, that the best way to increase my followers, and my supporters, is for people like you to share my posts far and wide on social media.

I am an ally
Us sharks know what it is to be hunted and killed because of irrational fear based in ignorance and hatred.
I raise my fins in solidarity with Orlando and the whole world Queer community.
My heart goes out to the fallen, and the families and friends affected - which is everyone. There is no separation. We are all one family.
I'm a shark. A pansexual gender fluid shark. I'm also a straight cis gendered shark. Because we are all one and these definitions hold no meaning in the face of tragedy.
Humans - take it from a shark: don't hate, don't kill people. Hold your family close.

World Oceans Day - the world needs oceans and the oceans need sharks
#sharks #ocean http://www.worldoceansday.org
Yes, Sharks are that important. There are many ways in which Sharks keep the ecosystem in a balance. Being top predator of the oceans, they keep prey in check which in turn keeps reefs etc healthy and therefore the oceans stay healthy. Overfishing of sharks will affect everything. If the sharks go, the oceans will get affected and so will the Earth.
We have been put on this planet to take care of it. All of creation was given to us to protect and nurture and use as we needed. We have abused that privilege and our future generations will have to reap the consequences unless we change things today.

Hey Australia, your tourists already know and they won't come back in 5 years when there's nothing left of the reef.

#Australia #environment #unesco #climatechange #shame
Australia removed from UN report on climate change because the Australian government cares more about tourism than the sites tourists come to visit

This makes me sick.

In an epic fail of logic, the Australian government objected to a UNESCO report on climate change that included an entire chapter on the effect on the Great Barrier Reef, which is bleaching rapidly, as well as several other World Heritage listed sites that are at risk.

But after sacking the majority of the CSIRO (Australian scientific research) climate scientists - in a year when the ancient forests of Tasmania were irrevocably burning fur the first time in history, when dozens of new species have been put on the endangered list... the Australian government successfully pushed to quash the report because it might negatively affect tourism.

Here's the original report: http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/may/27/revealed-the-report-on-the-great-barrier-reef-that-australia-didnt-want-the-world-to-see

All mentions of Australia are now removed from the UNESCO report.

This article compares the move to Soviet style government censorship. But honestly, I think that's putting it lightly.
THIS IS THE MOST SHAMEFUL MOVE THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT HAS MADE, in a recent spate of inept, crappy moves.

There's an election coming up. I think we need to follow the current government's lead and quash the election in favour of an execution.
I say we feed them to the sharks - after all, the UN report makes it very clear the sharks will be starving to death very soon, thanks to the dying of the Reef.___Hey Australia, your tourists already know and they won't come back in 5 years when there's nothing left of the reef.

Can you please tell me what's going on at the moment? Have you completely lost your sanity?
In the last few days social media got full with messages of terminated ingress accounts stating wishy-washy reasons.

I am an Ingress agent for almost three years now and when I opened my scanner on Tuesday evening after work for upgrading and hacking a nearby portal, I could hack but when I moved to the next portal which was green and "needed to be bluetified" I could not shoot...
I received an e-mail which stated my account has been terminated. WTF are you doing?
Are you just randomly terminating accounts? I want my account back, no matter what!

o.O

It was thought until very recently that the caterpillar was completely converted to goo, excepting certain special cells necessary to create the butterfly body parts. This idea has recently been debunked with researchers at Georgetown University proving that moths retain at least some of the memories they had when they were caterpillars. For this to be the case, at least some of their memory storing neurons must survive the enzyme digestion process. Further, these neurons must somehow be incorporated into the moth or butterfly’s brain, which is quite a bit larger and more complex than a caterpillar’s brain.

Your mum has taken the difficult step to leave the violence; your new life is tough but at least you don’t feel scared all the time.

Journalist Jess Hill said it so well in Daily Life this week – echoing the sentiments of the thousands of emails I get from people despairing about the situations their children are forced into. http://dailylife.com.au/news-and-views/dl-opinion/media-must-rise-to-the-challenge-of-reporting-domestic-violence-20160329-gntlha.html

Yet there are clear steps that can be taken to deliver a safe path through the family law system, so our kids have a chance at a better life.

Today we launch Justice for Kids.

Justice for Kids is about seeing through the cultural and systemic changes needed to protect our kids from violence.

I have worked closely with Women’s Legal Services Australia as they developed a roadmap for change – a five-step plan to create a family law system that puts our kids first.

Now I am asking you to help me make sure that everyone knows about this plan, especially those who can make the changes needed for a better system.

Click here to sign the petition asking all political parties to acknowledge that Justice for Kids is possible. http://www.neveralone.com.au/justiceforkids

On the 20th of June it will be one year since we started the Never Alone community. On that day the petition will be presented.

Ovarian Psychos - women riding bicycles around Los Angeles protesting domestic violence and promoting female empowerment

They ride by night. Once a month a couple hundred female bicycling enthusiasts gather for a “Luna Ride”, in which they take to the streets en masse to reclaim parts of Los Angeles that have been traditionally dangerous for women to be alone after dark. They’ve appropriated gang-style imagery, but with a feminist twist – their bandannas and scarves bear white-on-black images of uteruses and Fallopian tubes. The women are largely Latina and many have been victims of domestic violence.

But they need our protection - without sharks, the ocean ecosystem breaks down, and in turn, the ecosystems of the planet break down.
Thus the project www.sharkshepherd.com

Von Wong says Sharks are almost always depicted as menacing and terrifying, yet it is humans that are responsible for killing them in the millions just to make soup. I wanted to create a series of images that would help break those stereotypes and show that it is possible for us to co-exist together in perfect harmony

For each and every shot we would weigh down Amber Bourke, our champion freediver, onto the perfectly lit rock formation where light was falling. The ethereal white dress, designed specifically for this shoot by Ali Charisma, would have to be carefully placed so that it would flow beautifully into the image. When all was finally in position, we would hand over the three-piece plastic shepherds crook to amber and begin the wait.
Over the course of three days, we waited over six hours.

Though popular media would tell you that sharks come swarming at the slightest scent of blood, death and suffering, our experience with them was the complete opposite.
Similar to squirrels at a park, the white tipped reef sharks would hover around us curiously only to scamper off if anyone got too close.

Shark facts:
- Sharks are a keystone species and are responsible for the health of ocean ecosystems. They eliminate the weak, the diseased and the dead, maintaining the ecological balance and the future health of the ocean.
- Every year, tens of millions of sharks are killed by humans. On average, sharks kill less than 10 people a year.
- Currently, shark ecotourism brings almost 1 Billion US worldwide, and is expected to grow 2 fold in the next 20 years.
- There are over 450 species of sharks, most cause no harm to humans.

Gender is not binary
It is a spectrum and can be fluid just as sexuality can be. We absolutely need to raise more awareness around gender fluidity, trans* people, and just let go of the "boy/girl" binary idea in general

A growing number of people refuse to be put into male or female categories, either because they do not identify as male or female, or because they are going through transition to the opposite gender.
Germany, Australia, Nepal and Pakistan now offer a third gender option on official forms with other countries set to follow suit. And scientists are finding more evidence to suggest that even biological sex is a spectrum.
Do we need to re-imagine our binary world and rethink one of the most basic parts of our identity?

A little light in what is otherwise a grim situation.

"Each shelter is fitted with solar panels, mosquito nets, lights, and ventilation, reports news site IRIN. There are also lockable doors, a key feature, as lack of privacy at refugee camps can leave women and children vulnerable to sexual assault. Prototypes were previously tested among 40 refugee families in Iraq and Ethiopia. The structures offer extra space—they’re 57 feet square and six feet tall—allowing family members to stand upright in the space, as opposed to crouching or lying down in tents."

Myths, fallacies and missing media messages about America's black communities.

Someone recently said this to me in a social post:
“I just can't understand how anybody can rally forces like this but still condone the violence and criminal element ...especially the killing your own race while saying black lives matter.... surely there has to be an issue with the value of life and respecting each other.... I just just wish they had a movement to stop that kind of stuff...”

I’ve seen this sentiment numerous times online:
“Black on black crime… If black lives don’t matter to black people, then why should they matter to anyone else?”

So, let’s take a second to get some education on these very valid thoughts/comments/questions.

I’ve seen this sentiment numerous times online:
“Black on black crime… If black lives don’t matter to black people, then why should they matter to anyone else?”

So, let’s take a second to get some education on these very valid thoughts/comments/questions.

1. Why don’t black people protest crime against their own in their communities?

They do. It just isn’t shown in the media because it isn’t “watchable.” There’s no drama, per se. You can read about some of those rallies and some well worded essayists thoughts, here: http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2012/04/why-dont-black-people-protest-black-on-black-violence/255329/  and here: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2014/12/black_community_is_concerned_with_black_on_black_crime_suggesting_otherwise.html and here: https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150630/englewood/army-of-moms-starts-patrolling-englewood-after-shooting

A simple google search will net you quite a few stories along the lines of the three I’ve posted above.

Bonus: “Those black kids do so much bad because black fathers aren’t engaged in their childrens’ lives.” While there may be an issue with quantity, there’s no issue with engagement or quality. The CDC debunked that a while back: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr071.pdf

2. Until black people fix their problems no one will care. The black community is its own problem. Or, black people are their own problem.

Black communities have worked their own problems but America has, time and again, destroyed any progress the “black community” has made. I know, I know, that sounds like the basis for some serious lack of personal responsibility and I still hold every individual accountable for their own well being but as an ethnic minority in this country, what you are seeing today has a root cause(s). The psychological slavery and oppression is very real. And the systemic oppression continues to this day.

Here’s an archetypal example of a thriving black community that was wiped out by their fellow Americans. Many who’d just returned from fighting in WWII (you know, the ‘greatest generation’) and used the military training and weapons they’d brought home with them  to murder hundreds, maybe thousands of well off blacks: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwood,_Tulsa#The_Black_Wall_Street

Here are some examples of systemic oppression which have helped crush and control black communities. Some still in practice to this day:
Black Students In The U.S. Get Criminalized While White Students Get Treatment http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/racial-disparities-american-schools_55b67572e4b0074ba5a576c1

Redlining, real wealth and  “extracting wealth from the nascent black middle class and moving it to white hands. An excellent post written by +Yonatan Zunger  This isn’t rhetoric, but fact/data driven analysis with research provided by Pew: https://plus.google.com/+YonatanZunger/posts/Miuiu1caf3D

Some contributing factors to the disproportionate punitive actions often taken toward young black males. This one is from the American Psychological Association: http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2014/03/black-boys-older.aspx

Another look at some of the root causes of the disparities in the communities. These are more historical: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1992-05-18/news/1992139210_1_unintended-consequences-poor-families-social-welfare-policies

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bill-quigley/40-reasons-why-our-jails-are-full-of-black-and-poor-people_b_7492902.html?ir=Black%20Voices&ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000047

Now, I could’ve laid this all out for you myself but I don’t want you to take my word for it. I’ve pointed you to links from some very credible NGO resources and trusted research entities because I want this info to be digested with as little perceived bias as possible. I know that removing all bias is impossible but at some point, when there’s a mountain of evidence for a thing, it speaks for itself.

Again, my intention with all of this is to educate and answer the question I’m seeing so often in social media concerning a perception that black communities don’t rally around the violence that comes from within the community and that, somehow, the people in that community are their own worst problem. No group of people intentionally WANTS to live in poverty or live in a perpetual state of poverty from generation to generation. Of course there are factors, both endogenous and exogenous, which contribute to the various maladies which allow these conditions to exist but to say “shame on them, they could just rise up and walk out of this problem,” belies a gross lack of understanding of the past and present forces acting on the black community.

If you have any questions about what I’ve posted and you think you’ll get brow beaten for expressing an unpopular opinion, feel free to hit me up privately. I will anonymously post your question in the comments and answer it there.___

Well those of us actually on the front lines have been asking G+ to do something about the lack of moderation tools here that make harassment easy.  Maybe now that the UN is saying social media ought to do something, they'll actually do something?  HAHAHAHAHA, I know, sorry, it was a silly thought.

Under the Abaddon anomaly in Hamburg last weekend I was assaulted and robbed. I lost everything (passport, money, visa, mobile) and had a temporary amnesia, and when I finally arrived at the airport I was exhausted, wet and cold. I went to the  airport office and all the employees was amazing. I got food, towels, soap and a hot shower, and they lent me a telephone and a computer so I could contact family and the insurance company.
After several hours at the airport office and the police I fell a sleep on a chair. I woke up when I heard my name and Ingress on the speaker and went back to the airport office. One of the employee told med an organization called Ingress and that a man from Enlightened Hamburg was on his way to the airport to pick me up. I can't describe how relieved I was to hear those words. A short while after agent @LipovitanD picked me up and drove me home to his and agent @Silbermilch apartment  where I stayed until the next day. The next day she went with me all the way to the airport where both blue and green agents from Norway waited for me. Back in Norway me and my car got transported all the way home to my apartment.
The solidarity and care the agents from both faction is unbelievable, but this isn't the end of the story. The Enlightened started crowdfunding for me and I got money and a new phone. I've couldn't be more thankful and happy.

Even with a incident like this I will still go out and play, attend anomalies and other events. I had a great time before this happened and I met a lot of fun and great people in both factions.

And please stay together and look after each other <3

I would like to thank all of you who helped me and still supports me from the bottom of my heart, and a special thanks to agents:

Thanks for getting me into this.

#IngressYearThree
It's my personal three year anniversary since getting my invite to ingress - well, actually yesterday was but here in Australia the app wasn't available for download and I had to sideload the apk; something I didn't know how to do, but the awesome people on g+ talked me through it.
So it was a learning curve, and finding myself living two hours drive from the nearest portal...
But the game slowly built steam and more and more portals came online and more and more agents joined (and retired).
There's no one left in my local area who was already playing when I first opened my scanner and timidly posted "Hello World" in comm.

I've mostly played for fielding, never chasing personal AP gain or racing to level up (actually I focus more on getting my AP all in even numbers than high scores, and prefer to help others level up than get AP or MU for myself).

Though I've been playing constantly since day 1 of open beta, been an active leader in my community locally, naturally and globally and put loads of energy into planning megafielding and anomalies, I'm still far off level 16... Rural area AP is hard to come by.

But I'm not fussed - that's the beauty of ingress: everyone can play the way they want and be motivated by what inspires them, whether it be making farms, smashing, making fields, the social side, adventure and discovery, exercise...

I know I've discovered so many places I might never have found and I've met still many awesome people and made so many great friends along the way. Not to mention thousands of kilometres of travel and connecting with people all over the world!

The one thing I take away from it all, my one slice of wisdom to share would be: remember that the agentnames in your scanner are all human beings. Be kind, regardless of faction.
Attack the portals, not the players

My #Ingress agent profile

By making jokes of these things, we engender them to perpetuate. We allow abusers to feel validated in their abuse. We normalise the behaviour in our culture and we marginalise and further victimise the victims.

Please pay attention to the text underneath too:

‘It’s just a word’ is a fairly common protest when I point out problematic language. It’s frustrating, because the truth is that language, power, society, and structural discrimination are deeply entwined. As someone who has studied linguistics and social information practices, I can absolutely speak to the fact that language is a powerful and insidious tool for keeping people down, whether it’s hissed at you by a passerby on the street, or spray-painted on your house, or used jokingly by your peers, or used to describe you in legislation, the language that describes and defines us has consequences that ripple through our lives, right down to our bones.
