The good news is I got around to editing this photo between games. Downtown San Diego from Point Loma. Kind of a hazy night, so I'll probably try shooting from here again sometime. I shot this with my Sony A7RII and the Canon 70-200mm F4 L IS lens adapted to the camera with the metabones IV adapter. It's interesting the metadata says I used the Sony 70-200mm F4 lens. I combined 5 exposures using the 32-bit HDR plug-in then cleaned up the image with Photoshop and Lightroom.

Stars over Manarola
Cinque Terre, Italy

After an incredible dinner at Trattoria dal Billy, we walked back to our room and pulled up a lounge chair on our private terrace with a glass of limoncello. It was a lot darker than the camera makes it look, and after a minute or two of stargazing we noticed the milky way was visible, so I ran to grab my camera.

I haven't done a whole lot of astrophotography, but I did what I could with the equipment I had. I was trying to save weight and only brought 2 lenses to Europe, and both were F4. I grabbed my 17-40 and opened it up to F4, cranked up the ISO, and let it shoot for 30 seconds. I was happy to see the stars were visible, albeit a little dark and with a fair amount of noise. I followed up the high ISO exposure with a round of brackets for the city. I merged the city bracket using the Lightroom 32-bit HDR plug-in, then I... more »

New York Central Park Sunset

Back on the ground in New York we got a chance to enjoy a sunset and some ice skaters in Central Park. We stopped by the Halal Guys cart and picked up some chicken and rice our way to central park, then found a spot to sit and eat and enjoy the view.

This is a pano, something I've been playing around with lately. This scene in central park is huge, so the only way to fit it all in was with a pano. It's kind of cool how it's almost 10,000 pixels wide. Lightroom and Photoshop have some new pano features, but I finished this before those were released. I shot a couple more panos, so I might try out the new features on one of those.

Candy Cane Empire State Building Aerial
New York, NY

For Christmas this year my wife and her parents got me a helicopter ride over New York City. It was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had, and something I hope I get a chance to do again.

New York is one of my favorite cities in the world, and the Empire State Building is arguably its most iconic skyscraper. Flying a circle around the Empire State Building was one of the highlights of our flight.

Happy New Year! After the holidays and various family, fun, and work trips I'm finally home and starting to go through some of my photos from the past 3 weeks.

New York is one of my very favorite cities, there is always so much going on, and Radio City is right at the middle of it all. While we were there Radio City had multiple Christmas Spectacular shows running every day.

Aurora HDR Sunset
San Diego, CA

I decided to try out the new Aurora HDR software from MacPhun and Trey Ratcliff. I'm definitely still in the learning and figuring it out stage. This is the first HDR I made using the software. I don't have any real strong first impressions yet other than it is different than the couple of workflows I typically work within.

Since moving to the Sony a7Rii I've actually found myself blending exposures much less often than I did before.

Walking the Chicago River
Chicago, IL

Monday evening we were flying back to San Diego from the East Coast and our flight was delayed, causing us to miss the connection in Chicago. So I did what anyone "stuck" in one of their favorite cities would do, I grabbed my camera and headed into the city to get some pizza and take some photos. Unfortunately my tripod was in my checked bag, which we couldn't access, so I had to find anything I could to balance the camera for nighttime exposures. The Sony A7rII was awesome, and the dynamic range is good enough that I didn't even worry about bracketing for HDR, I just took single exposures. I was really hoping to make it up to the top of the Hancock building since I had never been, but the visibility at the top was 0%, so we grabbed a drink from the lounge, but couldn't see anything but white from the inside of a cloud at the... more »

I only wish I could have stayed in Chicago long enough to be in Wrigleyville tonight to watch the Cubs wild card game. I can only imagine what it's like there right now.

Supermoon Eclipse
San Diego, CA

Last night, at a distance of 221,753 miles, the moon reached its closest point to Earth for the year. Scientists bounce lasers off reflectors left on the moon and measure the time it takes for the round trip to accurately measure its distance. They can measure it precisely enough to know that the average distance of the moon is drifting away from Earth at a rate of roughly 1.5" per year, which is about the same rate our fingernails grow. Over time this will lead to much weaker ocean tides, and observers on Earth will no longer be able to see a total solar eclipse. Don't worry though, it could take up to a billion years for the moon to drift far enough to notice these changes.

This is a shot of the Supermoon blood moon, or whatever they are calling it from last night. I went down to Shelter Island where there had to be at least 500... more »

The Perfect Sunset at Mission Bay
San Diego, CA

The weather has been terrible lately, hot and humid, but sometimes this gross weather turns into an awesome sunset. That was the case last night in Mission Bay. I think I'm still smiling, a day after watching the sky light up over the bay.

I shot this as a 5 exposure bracket, but after some HDR processing both in Photomatix, and as a 32-bit merge I decided the single exposure processed only in Lightroom did the best job of holding detail and color. The files from the Sony a7RII are awesome, I'm still really excited about the capabilities of this little camera.

Standing Together
New York, NY

Last year I got to be in New York on September 11th and experience first hand the tributes and special events at ground zero, the Yankee game, and view the tribute in light from the top of the Empire State Building. It was a very humbling experience, and a reminder of things we so easily forget. Nothing in life is guaranteed, and we are all in this together. To paraphrase what I think was a brilliant Teen Choice Awards speech from Ashton Kutcher "work hard, be thoughtful, be generous, find your opportunity and build for yourself a life that you want to live."

60th Anniversary Disneyland Hub
Anaheim, CA

The lights they added behind the castle are pretty awesome, but you know what my favorite part of this photo is? It's the little red popcorn cart on the left side. The popcorn they pump out of that thing is nothing short of exceptional. You just can't beat a tub of fresh popped Disneyland popcorn, even the smell is satisfying. Quick tip to make it even better... add a couple shakes of salt.

Light Trails to the City
San Diego, CA

Traffic heading in and out of downtown San Diego just after sunset.

Similar to a a few of my recent posts, this is not an HDR, but a blend of photos taken over a period of about 30 minutes. Most of the image comes from one of the first shots taken just after sunset. Then leaving the tripod in the same spot I kept taking exposures over the next 30 minutes or so as it got dark and the city lights turned on. Using the lighten blend mode in Photoshop I added the light trails and city lights, leaving the sky, trees, and everything but the lit windows from the sunset shot.

Disneyland 60th Anniversary Celebration
Anaheim, CA

Sleeping Beauty Castle is the centerpiece of the 60th anniversary celebration at Disneyland.

This is a two shot panorama made from two 5 exposure HDRs that were merged with Photomatix. All the images were shot with the Sony a7RII and the Sony FE 16-35mm F4 lens. A few days ago I tested out the Lightroom panorama tool with a simple sequence of shots and I was impressed with how well it worked, so I decided to try it again with this shot. The full resolution size of this image is over 7000 x 7000 pixels.

Twilight in San Diego

Happy Friday! I'm looking forward to a weekend in San Diego.

Along with the new camera I've been playing around with some new shooting and processing techniques too. This is a photo made of exposures taken over a period of about 30 minutes, then merged together. So it's kind of like an HDR, but the shots aren't bracketed, they're just single exposures over time. Then they get blended together in photoshop, no photomatix merging or anything like that, just photoshop layers.

Overlooking Seattle at Twilight
Seattle, WA

When I got to Kerry Park there were at least 6 other photographers setup with tripods pointed at the city. Needless to say, this is a very popular viewpoint on the city. It was hazy during our whole trip to Seattle so its tough to make out Mt. Rainier on the right, but it is there, which is more than we could say for much of the trip.

Seattle really is a beautiful city, and similar to where I'm from in San Diego, there seems to be construction happening everywhere. This photo shows at least 5 different cranes, and there are probably more that I didn't notice.

This was my first time working with the a7RII and an adapted lens, I had it attached to my Canon 70-200 F4 IS, and overall I was very happy with how well it worked. I was shooting with the camera on a tripod so weight wasn't a big issue, but I do think... more »

Night Game in Seattle
Seattle, WA

I just got back from a weekend in Seattle, and my first trip with the a7RII. I'm very happy with how easy it was to carry around the city, and the quality of images I was able to take. This is a single image, taken a little while after sunset. The dynamic range in these files is incredible, I think I'll be very happy without HDR (and the hassle that comes with it) in many situations shooting with this camera.

Friday night we went to a Mariners game. Unfortunately the Mariners didn't play too well, although as an Angel fan I have to admit I wasn't too disappointed to see them lose. It was still a fun game and I got to check another stadium off my list.

Balboa Park Botanical Building
San Diego, CA

It has been awhile since my last trip to Balboa Park, but the new camera has been motivating me to get back to some of San Diego's popular attractions. Balboa Park is currently celebrating its 100 year anniversary, and it seems that leading up to the celebration they have done a lot of work to clean up and restore the park. The lights on the Botanical Building were awesome, and I couldn't pass up taking this this very popular shot.

Pink Clouds
La Jolla, CA

Last night was one of those days I really felt tired, and despite having my new camera I was questioning whether or not I wanted to go shoot. I didn't see any clouds over the ocean so I questioned if the sunset would be any good. Eventually I took a look at my new camera (Sony a7RII), and the opportunity to try out some more new features got me excited enough to head down to La Jolla.

Once I got down to the coast I noticed there were still no clouds over the water, but there were a lot of great wispy clouds to the north and the east. As the sun set they continued to get more and more colorful, and eventually I got to enjoy this colorful end to my day.

Photography is one of those things where sometimes I question if I want to put in the effort to go out and shoot. Then once I'm out shooting, I can't thing of a time I've... more »

Then once I'm out shooting, I can't thing of a time I've regretted putting in the effort, even if the sunset ends up being a bust. There's something very calming and satisfying about being out shooting.

Sunset on the Beach in La Jolla
La Jolla, CA

I got my Sony a7RII this weekend, and have had a couple chances to get out and give it a try. I'm still getting used to the features and settings, but so far the camera is awesome. The dynamic range is incredible and I'm still in awe over the details it picks up. Definitely a lot of fun, and something new to look forward to and get me out shooting.

This is the sunset from last night in La Jolla.

Once in a Blue...
San Diego, CA

The full moon last night in San Diego. Since it was the second full moon in the month of July, this is a "blue moon." The last one occurred in 2012 and the next one will be in January 2018.

This is a 32-bit HDR. I merged 6 exposures using the HDR soft 32-bit Lightroom plug-in, then exported to photoshop to finish it up.

Late Night at the Pier Cafe
San Diego, CA

My patience is definitely being tested as I read about countless European photographers receiving their a7Rii. I'm trying to calm my impatience by editing this photo I shot on the a6000. It's truly shocking how much better the dynamic range is on the Sony sensors compared to my Canon 5D3. I realize that right now this is a bit of a stretch, but I do believe that if Canon doesn't start innovating at a faster pace they are going to be the next Kodak.

I went to Harbor Island a couple weeks ago to try and get some shots of the full moon. Unfortunately the clouds were thick and the moon didn't push through until it was pretty high in the sky. I took this a few minutes after sunset while I was waiting for the moon.

Eat at Joe's
San Diego, CA

I've been somewhat impatiently waiting for the Sony a7Rii to be released so I got the Sony 16-35mm F4 and took it out with my wife's a6000 so I could start getting more familiar with the Sony mirrorless system. This was my first time taking the Sony out at night on a tripod and I have to say, I was extremely impressed. The dynamic range of a raw file from the a6000 is very noticeably higher than what I get from my Canon 5D3. Testing out the a6000 is only making me more impatient for the a7R ii to be released.

Late at night overlooking LA. I've always said I hate LA, but after spending a little time there, it's not as bad as I made it seem in my head.

This is a 5 exposure HDR, merged in photomatix and with the Lightroom 32-bit plug-in, then both versions blended together along with the original exposures in photoshop.

I merged the city bracket using the Lightroom 32-bit HDR plug-in, then I... more »

A Night in Manarola
Manarola, Cinque Terre

During our trip to Italy we only had one full day in Cinque Terre. I feel like we could have spent weeks there and still been happy. We started our day in Monterosso and decided to head out on the hiking trail to Vernazza. The trail passed through vineyards and along the cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It was quite picturesque, but also a surprisingly challenging hike. There was a bit more climbing than I think we had anticipated, and by the time we got to Vernazza we were starting to feel tired.

We spent the rest of the day exploring the small town of Vernazza before eventually heading back to Manarola, where we were spending the night. We ate dinner then climbed up our last hill of the night to our B&B where we had a room with this amazing private terrace overlooking the town. It was such a relaxing experience to... more »

The Bean - Chicago, IL

Cloud Gate, also known as "The Bean" in Millennium Park, Chicago, IL.

The buildings in the background are really tall, it took a lot of tilting to get them upright. A tilt-shift lens would have been very helpful, I just wish they weren't so expensive. It also took a long time to get all the people out of this shot. It turns out this is a popular place to be just after sunset. I used 4 different brackets all processed with the same settings and the original source files to mask out the people, and even with all those photos I still had to do a little bit of cloning.

Ocean Sculptures
La Jolla, CA

This is probably my favorite grouping of rocks in La Jolla. There are so many cool lines in this set of rocks, and the level of the tide exposes or hides different parts of it. The tide in this photo was higher than it looks, I had to wait until a set of pretty good size waves ended, then run out to this spot, get the bracket of shots, then run back to safety before the next set of waves.
