Bellagio Fountain Show
Las Vegas, NV

I'm heading back to Vegas next week for CES (Consumer Electronics Show). I'm pretty excited, the show is kind of like Disneyland for engineers and gadget geeks (me), and the fact it's in Vegas only makes it better (at least to me). Now I just need to figure out everything I want to see, the show floor is huge, covering the whole convention center and many of the exhibition spaces in nearby hotels. Let me know if there is something I should make an effort to see.

This photo is from a trip I took a year or two ago. The anticipation of my upcoming trip made me want to dig into my Vegas photo archives, and I decided to process this one. I took this after a tough day at the blackjack table, I needed a break from the casino, so I went up to the Eiffel Tower observation deck.

Disneyland 60th Anniversary Celebration
Anaheim, CA

Sleeping Beauty Castle is the centerpiece of the 60th anniversary celebration at Disneyland.

This is a two shot panorama made from two 5 exposure HDRs that were merged with Photomatix. All the images were shot with the Sony a7RII and the Sony FE 16-35mm F4 lens. A few days ago I tested out the Lightroom panorama tool with a simple sequence of shots and I was impressed with how well it worked, so I decided to try it again with this shot. The full resolution size of this image is over 7000 x 7000 pixels.

Twilight in San Diego

Happy Friday! I'm looking forward to a weekend in San Diego.

Along with the new camera I've been playing around with some new shooting and processing techniques too. This is a photo made of exposures taken over a period of about 30 minutes, then merged together. So it's kind of like an HDR, but the shots aren't bracketed, they're just single exposures over time. Then they get blended together in photoshop, no photomatix merging or anything like that, just photoshop layers.

Overlooking Seattle at Twilight
Seattle, WA

When I got to Kerry Park there were at least 6 other photographers setup with tripods pointed at the city. Needless to say, this is a very popular viewpoint on the city. It was hazy during our whole trip to Seattle so its tough to make out Mt. Rainier on the right, but it is there, which is more than we could say for much of the trip.

Seattle really is a beautiful city, and similar to where I'm from in San Diego, there seems to be construction happening everywhere. This photo shows at least 5 different cranes, and there are probably more that I didn't notice.

This was my first time working with the a7RII and an adapted lens, I had it attached to my Canon 70-200 F4 IS, and overall I was very happy with how well it worked. I was shooting with the camera on a tripod so weight wasn't a big issue, but I do think... more »

Night Game in Seattle
Seattle, WA

I just got back from a weekend in Seattle, and my first trip with the a7RII. I'm very happy with how easy it was to carry around the city, and the quality of images I was able to take. This is a single image, taken a little while after sunset. The dynamic range in these files is incredible, I think I'll be very happy without HDR (and the hassle that comes with it) in many situations shooting with this camera.

Friday night we went to a Mariners game. Unfortunately the Mariners didn't play too well, although as an Angel fan I have to admit I wasn't too disappointed to see them lose. It was still a fun game and I got to check another stadium off my list.

Balboa Park Botanical Building
San Diego, CA

It has been awhile since my last trip to Balboa Park, but the new camera has been motivating me to get back to some of San Diego's popular attractions. Balboa Park is currently celebrating its 100 year anniversary, and it seems that leading up to the celebration they have done a lot of work to clean up and restore the park. The lights on the Botanical Building were awesome, and I couldn't pass up taking this this very popular shot.

Pink Clouds
La Jolla, CA

Last night was one of those days I really felt tired, and despite having my new camera I was questioning whether or not I wanted to go shoot. I didn't see any clouds over the ocean so I questioned if the sunset would be any good. Eventually I took a look at my new camera (Sony a7RII), and the opportunity to try out some more new features got me excited enough to head down to La Jolla.

Once I got down to the coast I noticed there were still no clouds over the water, but there were a lot of great wispy clouds to the north and the east. As the sun set they continued to get more and more colorful, and eventually I got to enjoy this colorful end to my day.

Photography is one of those things where sometimes I question if I want to put in the effort to go out and shoot. Then once I'm out shooting, I can't thing of a time I've... more »

Then once I'm out shooting, I can't thing of a time I've regretted putting in the effort, even if the sunset ends up being a bust. There's something very calming and satisfying about being out shooting.

Sunset on the Beach in La Jolla
La Jolla, CA

I got my Sony a7RII this weekend, and have had a couple chances to get out and give it a try. I'm still getting used to the features and settings, but so far the camera is awesome. The dynamic range is incredible and I'm still in awe over the details it picks up. Definitely a lot of fun, and something new to look forward to and get me out shooting.

This is the sunset from last night in La Jolla.

Once in a Blue...
San Diego, CA

The full moon last night in San Diego. Since it was the second full moon in the month of July, this is a "blue moon." The last one occurred in 2012 and the next one will be in January 2018.

This is a 32-bit HDR. I merged 6 exposures using the HDR soft 32-bit Lightroom plug-in, then exported to photoshop to finish it up.

Late Night at the Pier Cafe
San Diego, CA

My patience is definitely being tested as I read about countless European photographers receiving their a7Rii. I'm trying to calm my impatience by editing this photo I shot on the a6000. It's truly shocking how much better the dynamic range is on the Sony sensors compared to my Canon 5D3. I realize that right now this is a bit of a stretch, but I do believe that if Canon doesn't start innovating at a faster pace they are going to be the next Kodak.

Eat at Joe's
San Diego, CA

I've been somewhat impatiently waiting for the Sony a7Rii to be released so I got the Sony 16-35mm F4 and took it out with my wife's a6000 so I could start getting more familiar with the Sony mirrorless system. This was my first time taking the Sony out at night on a tripod and I have to say, I was extremely impressed. The dynamic range of a raw file from the a6000 is very noticeably higher than what I get from my Canon 5D3. Testing out the a6000 is only making me more impatient for the a7R ii to be released.

Late at night overlooking LA. I've always said I hate LA, but after spending a little time there, it's not as bad as I made it seem in my head.

This is a 5 exposure HDR, merged in photomatix and with the Lightroom 32-bit plug-in, then both versions blended together along with the original exposures in photoshop.

Stars over Manarola
Cinque Terre, Italy

After an incredible dinner at Trattoria dal Billy, we walked back to our room and pulled up a lounge chair on our private terrace with a glass of limoncello. It was a lot darker than the camera makes it look, and after a minute or two of stargazing we noticed the milky way was visible, so I ran to grab my camera.

I haven't done a whole lot of astrophotography, but I did what I could with the equipment I had. I was trying to save weight and only brought 2 lenses to Europe, and both were F4. I grabbed my 17-40 and opened it up to F4, cranked up the ISO, and let it shoot for 30 seconds. I was happy to see the stars were visible, albeit a little dark and with a fair amount of noise. I followed up the high ISO exposure with a round of brackets for the city. I merged the city bracket using the Lightroom 32-bit HDR plug-in, then I... more »

A Night in Manarola
Manarola, Cinque Terre

During our trip to Italy we only had one full day in Cinque Terre. I feel like we could have spent weeks there and still been happy. We started our day in Monterosso and decided to head out on the hiking trail to Vernazza. The trail passed through vineyards and along the cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It was quite picturesque, but also a surprisingly challenging hike. There was a bit more climbing than I think we had anticipated, and by the time we got to Vernazza we were starting to feel tired.

We spent the rest of the day exploring the small town of Vernazza before eventually heading back to Manarola, where we were spending the night. We ate dinner then climbed up our last hill of the night to our B&B where we had a room with this amazing private terrace overlooking the town. It was such a relaxing experience to... more »

The Bean - Chicago, IL

Cloud Gate, also known as "The Bean" in Millennium Park, Chicago, IL.

The buildings in the background are really tall, it took a lot of tilting to get them upright. A tilt-shift lens would have been very helpful, I just wish they weren't so expensive. It also took a long time to get all the people out of this shot. It turns out this is a popular place to be just after sunset. I used 4 different brackets all processed with the same settings and the original source files to mask out the people, and even with all those photos I still had to do a little bit of cloning.

Ocean Sculptures
La Jolla, CA

This is probably my favorite grouping of rocks in La Jolla. There are so many cool lines in this set of rocks, and the level of the tide exposes or hides different parts of it. The tide in this photo was higher than it looks, I had to wait until a set of pretty good size waves ended, then run out to this spot, get the bracket of shots, then run back to safety before the next set of waves.

Clouds on Fire
La Jolla, CA

A colorful sunset from a few weeks ago in La Jolla. The water was rushing between the rocks pretty violently. Between adjusting the timing of the shot with the waves and changing the exposure length to get shorter or longer streaks I took about 10-12 different brackets before I finally got one with water motion I liked.

Get to the Theater
New York City, NY

Every time I see Radio City I think back to when I was a kid and my parents took my sister and me to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. I haven't seen a ton of stage performances in my life, but the Christmas Spectacular has got to be one of the most memorable. 20 years later I still remember how amazed I was watching the Rockettes perform the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, and of course, the synchronized kick line.

2 Minutes at Crystal Pier
San Diego, CA

Usually I avoid PB around sunset. The normal traffic to get there makes it a much less desirable beach location. As I left work last week I checked traffic and was surprised to see all the freeways were green so I decided to head down to Crystal Pier to take this shot that's been in my head for quite awhile, it's fun to finally follow through on something I've been thinking about for many months (if not years at this point).

King Arthur Carrousel
Anaheim, CA

As I pressed the shutter to start this bracket I looked up and noticed the sign for King Arthur Carrousel was spelled with two "r's." My initial reaction was that it was spelled wrong, or maybe it was some kind of strange British spelling. After a little googling I found both spellings are in fact correct, and both are relatively widely used. In fact, the carousel at California Adventure, King Triton's Carousel, is spelled with one 'r,' I'm not sure how or why Disney chose to spell carousel differently between Disneyland and California Adventure.

One of the cool things about photo post processing, especially in HDR workflows, is when parts of the photo become visible in ways that were not visible to the naked eye, and even weren't visible in the individual raw images.  The sky in this scene was an ugly flat orange, both in the raw image and to my eyes at the time. After HDR merging and color correction for the orange lights, some texture showed up in the clouds, and the sky turned to a blue/black color that's much closer to what I expect a night sky to look like. It's pretty cool what can be done with simple adjustments in modern post processing tools.

Ocean Carved Rocks
La Jolla, CA

I've lived my whole life on the west coast of California. As a result, I have always thought of sunsets and the ocean as subjects that go together. Obviously this isn't true for people in most of the world, but it is a truth based on my life experiences. I wonder what life experiences people have in other parts of the world that have created associations that I would have never considered.

Big City Standout
New York, NY

The best skylines in the world have iconic buildings that make them instantly recognizable. New York is obviously one of the best, and the skyline has no shortage of standout landmarks. At the time of its completion, the Chrysler Building was the tallest in the world, but it held that title for less than a year until April of 1931 when the Empire State Building opened and took the position of worlds tallest.

I was driving home tonight and noticed the huge moon rising up over the horizon. I haven't had a chance to photograph a full moon for a little while, but it brought me back to the last time I did.

Gondolas at Sunset
Venice, Italy

Venice was an awesome little town. The canals seem so confusing, for some reason I imagine them to be much more confusing than a network of roads winding through a small town. Luckily we didn't have to navigate the canals on our own, we got around on foot, or for longer trips we took the boat bus called the Vaporetto.

A Night in the Windy City
Chicago, IL

There's something about big cities thats special to me. I'm not sure if it's because there's always something exciting happening, like a sporting event, a theater event or food and drink event. Or if it's because the buildings and architecture are so much larger and grander than what I'm used to on the west coast. Either way, there's something about cities like Chicago or New York that excites me, and even though it's not the same as being there, looking at photos from past trips always puts a smile on my face.

The night time views are still spectacular, it just takes a little extra work to shoot through the glass without picking up reflections. In the end it's all worth it, the city really isn't alive until the lights are turned on.

I almost forgot to mention, the best part about visiting the Willis (Sears) Tower, is you're directly across the street from my favorite pizza in the world. Once we had our fill of the views, we headed straight to Giordano's for the best deep dish you can get.

Stormy San Diego

It was one of those days. On my way out of the house this morning I was thinking about the stormy skies and the potential for some cool clouds over the city, so I decided to grab my camera bag. As I was driving home from work, sure enough, the clouds were looking pretty awesome so I drove out to Harbor Island. I pulled my camera out of the bag, and got my tripod setup. I turned on my camera only to find the battery indicator blinking red. I started digging through my bag looking for my backup battery when I remembered I had charged it last night and left the fully charged battery on my desk at home.

Oh well, I still managed to get 2 brackets before the battery died, this was the first. It is a 32-bit HDR processed in Lightroom, then finished in Photoshop.

In the Vatican
Vatican City

They had an event in St. Peter's square a few hours before got to the Vatican. I'm not sure what it was for, but by the time we arrived these chairs were everywhere. I'm glad we missed whatever was going on, because getting around was difficult enough with how many people were in the area.

If you plan to go to the Vatican Museum (and Sistine Chapel) I definitely recommend buying tickets online in advance. The line to get in covered the equivalent of several city blocks. Since our hotel had helped us book our tickets two days before, we were able to walk right in.
