Thomas Hawk7,954,560The one and only @111863388502434056486 Guru @103519655975029093996 is coming to town and we are going to celebrate in style.  Join us on Thursday, October 11th for a special dinner / photowalk.   We are going to start the evening off at 5:30pm at Henry Hunan's on Sansome Street in San Francisco (note there are several Henry Hunan's, this is the one on Sansome in North Beach).  We'll enjoy some of San Francisco's best chinese food and then head up to go shoot the tallest building in SF, the Transamerica Building at sunset/dusk.  We'll shoot the building from the Montgomery Street overlook -- one of the best locations to shoot This iconic William Pereira spire from.   Afterwards we'll float around North Beach shooting more of the historic architecture and night life before ending up the night at Specs' Twelve Adler Museum for a few later evening adult beverages.   Specs' is a throwback to old school San Francisco that the SF Weekly describes as "one of the few bars left where you can ask for a martini and get a cold glass of gin and a little vermouth without having to answer a bunch of damn fool questions." Rumor has it the smoothest dude alive @101651096660571767183 will also be joining us from NYC and @105873814765821560444 will be up from Los Angeles.   What a great night for photography this will be.  Come on out for a great G+ Photography evening!A San Francisco Dinner/Photowalk with Gordon Laing2012-10-11 17:30:00136

A simply STUNNING day at Lake Tahoe last Monday! Today, a week later - it's fixing to rain.

This is an overview of a gorgeous nude beach at Tahoe. I was careful not to include any of the bathers, since everybody should be able to relax and enjoy themselves, IMO. But holy cow what a breathtaking day and spot!

Had to snowshoe to get here, then it was about 75-80 degrees F right on the sand. Microclimates-r-us!

"LeBouclier D'Or": Strasbourg, France
In the throes of getting ready to head back to France next week! My "The Artist's Voice" photography retreat is coming up June 7-12: I go over early to scout and visit friends. ;)

Color me excited to share the French Riviera with my fantastic group and to be back myself. I just love it there!

I'll be going back again in September: happy to report that retreat is full as well. We'll be planning 2018 events soon: including a probable retreat in the Lake Tahoe area next year to add to the roster! Stay tuned... ;)

Morning Rise: Bishop, CA

As her eyes were drawn to the mountaintop,
The radiant colors intensified to an impossible level,
like a fire peaking with a deafening roar, but in silence.
Even the birds hushed for a moment.

In her mind, she heard words that were not her own -
but became so the moment they were uttered;

"Each day dawns with a full spectrum;,
bursting with light and color and possibility."
She smiled and breathed it in.

Lit From Above: Kelowna, BC
Those of you who know me, know I'm crazy about Spring... and flowerzzzzz! I don't think I'm alone in that... ;)

I've been photographing them wherever I happen to be (they're just barely starting in the mountains... mostly at lower elevations): this one was actually from a few years ago, when I visited beautiful Kelowna, B.C. I loved it there - including the gorgeous flight from Seattle - and would love to go back!

Anyway, I've been in series mode over on my Instagram feed. You can follow me there: @karenhutton or www.instagram/karenhutton.

These crazy flowers started it the whole thing, because it wasn't enough to post a couple - I wanted to bathe in them. I'm doing sets of 12 on one theme, because that's the number that fills the screen on my phone. (Plus 12 is great number.)... more »

After flowers it was French towns and villages... now I'm on Blue. It's just doing it for fun. Now I'm gonna see how long I can keep it up, creating all these different themes. It really got my imagination going!

Theatre Protea: Santa Cruz Arboretum
She stands tall, waiting for the curtain to rise...
breath in perfect control.
When it does - it reveals a rapt audience...
nearly breathless with anticipation.
She reaches toward them, gently
sensing the golden spotlight upon her...
One intake; then an outflow carrying a note so beautiful
Every neck hair rose in unison.
Even on the homeless guy outside, standing at the stage door
waiting for the faintest thread of sound.

Everyone rose that evening,
transported by a voice so pure that all in the heavens
sighed as one.
---------------------------------
Captured sublimely by my Fujifilm X-T2 and 60mm f/2.4 lens.
ISO 200, f/4.5. 1/750 sec.
Handheld. Cause that's how I roll.

Need a little cool water upon your fevered brow?
Here ya go... ;)
---------------
Took this waterfall abstract on the way up to Mingo Falls, NC last month during a fun road trip the hubs and I took! I was originally going to go by myself - but the next thing you know, I had the best possible company in the world! :D

Taken with my Fujifilm X-T2 and 16-55mm lens, whilst straddling rocks and rushing water. Hey, it's good for the balance reflexes!

Settings: ISO 640, f/8.0, 1/40 sec

Doorways: Grasse, France
The mystical, magical ride of travel means you travel through many doors, make many choices, go this way over that way... and are in a constant state of wonder.
The best part?
You can take that feeling home with you and use it to create your life with all new eyes!
"To travel is to take a journey into yourself." - Danny Kaye.
Yeah. What he said.

Taken in Grasse, France last October as we scouted for my "The Artist's Voice" retreat. I call it scouting, even though I ate chocolate and drank cappuccinos along the way. I mean, ya gotta know which are best in each town, right? ;)

Still Harbor: Lake Tahoe, NV
Was going through some old photos looking for something and ran across this. It's from back in 2013, when I was using my Canon 5DIII.

What's notable today: this entire beach area and all the rocks are under water now! We had a HUGE winter and all the lakes and reservoirs are having to release water, just so they don't flood.

The other notable thing: how different the colors are on these files vs. my Fujifilm cameras. One guess as to which is quicker, easier and lovelier to work with!

Fujilove Magazine, May 2017 is out!
(get the single issue or subscribe here: https://fujilove.com/magazine)

I wrote a fun article about Gear and Emotion in Landscape Photography, which offers a different slant on camera/lens selection. IMO, it's best when your choices aren't made around what all the cool kids are doing, but rather... what feeling you want to convey.

Especially when it comes to lenses, making the appropriate selection will automatically present your vision in a unique way. Gear choices that align with the FEELING you want to get across (and with the experience you want to have as you create your images) helps strengthen the voice of your work and gets you closer to creating signature art!

Le Petite France By the River: Strasbourg, France
As I sit here watching it snow outside (YES! Snow!! Welcome to springtime in the mountains. Hehheh.), I was remembering another chilly springtime evening where I had to dodge snowflakes. The one below! I took it whilst on my 2 month "Postcards From an Artist" adventure in Europe last year.

Dang it was cold! I still feel the chill in my bones when I look at this photo, which I ran across yesterday. I remember I'd injured my back and was moving sooooo slow... but was determined to experience this incredible city at night, frostbite be damned!

"Frostbite can bite ME!"
As least that's the OOMPH got me out the door... the scenery took care the rest.

Ahh, the memories. Le sigh.

"Caresses": Mingo Falls, NC
Hard to believe that weeks have already passed since the hubs and I road tripped through the Smoky Mountains!

It wasn't all lush and springtime-y yet, so I while I did some of the wider shots... I really focused more on lovely intimate landscapes. You know, chunking it all down into little stories.

This one ended up feeling like gentle, sweet caresses. I love that thready look of (in this case) about a quarter second exposure on waterfalls. I'm one of those people who likes to know that water is still water, even if it's dreamy.

:D

Thief of My Heart: Convict Lake, CA
Ahhh, this oft-photographed lake never looks the same way twice. I mean, you always recognize a photo of Convict... but its many cloakings make it fun to visit every time.

It's kinda of like a celebrity siting. You wonder, with great anticipation; "What will she be wearing??" "Has he lost weight?" "Are they getting a divorce??"

Suffice it to say, the elegant appearance so counter to this lake's name was thoroughly intact... she wore ermine... had gained alot of water weight (in this case, a GOOD thing!)... and is still married to the reflections, the mountains and gorgeous surroundings that make THIS Convict the official thief of my heart!

Path of St. Marguerite: Île Sainte-Marguerite, France
From Cannes, you can take a short ferry ride to a couple of islands. One is St. Marguerite, which is where Fort Royal is. They held the actual Man in the Iron Mask there for some years... and you can even check out his cell!

But this is a gorgeous path on the island, where you can wander about, enjoying nature's breath (nice name for fresh air, right?). There are lots of them to explore.

Taken during our last "The Artist's Voice" retreat last October... I can't wait to be in France again this June!

Use soft eyes, yet see better
and follow our muse into our deepest and truest art.
Let's sip coffee. Savor French chocolate.
And delight in heavenly fragrances only possible right here.

Home: Cades Cove, TN
The Great Smoky Mountains were home to loads of settlers, as I discovered in our recent Fujifilm "X" Photographers Travel & Nature Summits (https://fujifilmxphotosummits.com) adventure. Cades Cove is pretty much mecca to see them today.

I don't know what it is about visiting old towns and settlers homes that makes me a bit melancholy... but the mood finds its way into how I photograph and process them. Yep, I go all Moody McSchmoodsville on them.
It was a fantastic event, BTW... and they're doing it again in Portland, OR this September. ;)

I'll be getting ready for FRANCE. [gleeful happy dance!]

After all my travels lately; workshops, speaking, road trips, know what I'm excited about? My Finding Your Artistic Voice retreat in FRANCE! It's coming up in a few short weeks!

The June event is full; but there are still spots for September!
Sept. 24-29, 2017 in Cannes: www.karenhutton.com/Sept2017

I've been sharing bits 'n snippets of this super fun, super life-changey approach to photography, art and life in articles, workshops, talks, in a course and in live video over the past few months... but THIS is the event where we get to really go for it. I LOVE it!

We learn, grow and become artists in all new ways together that continue long after returning home.

It's unique, so much fun and well, it's in FRANCE!!
I hope you'll consider joining us - and sharing this with anyone you think would love it too!... more »

The Alabama Hills: Lone Pine, CA
A few more days and I'll be back home in the mountains! It's been three illuminating weeks of travel to the Great Smoky Mountains and beyond, to Florida and now to the Bay Area.

In the meantime, remembering this day in the Alabama Hills outside Lone Pine made me smile. It was just one of "those" moments, when I was who I was with no apologies.

I mean, I always Am who I am. It was just more "all that" that day.
This is a handheld pano taken with my Fujifilm X-Pro2 and 50-140mm f/2.8, stitched together in Auto Pano Giga. In case you wondered.

Ahhhh... I'm back. Actually, I never left; just took a posting break. You should try it - it's refreshing!

And today: I've got a bunch of NEW images on my blog today: http://karenhutton.com/summit.

It's a recap and view-from-here about the recent Fujifilm "X" Photographers Travel & Nature Summits event in the Great Smoky Mountains I taught with Jack Graham, Bill Fortney and Dan Bailey.

I found myself photographing a bit differently... more back to my roots with intimate scenes, expressing the moodiness I experienced in many of the historic places we visited. I used different lenses, different processing... and had a blast reaching into different expressions. Something I encourage EVERYONE to do now and again!

But who could resist a hardy photographer in red beside a roaring river? Not me!

So Hi! Happy... more »

Perception, Challenged: Truckee, CA
It's fun - and sometimes disorienting to alter your perceptions, to challenge what you think you know.

But life - and art - depend upon it.

Taken with my Fujifilm X-T20 and 60mm f/2.4 lens on a morning with no power, no cell, no internet, no roads and no car. Well, OK - a rental. And a dead owned car.

And still... Unusual Beauty abounded.

Good Morning: Mono Lake, CA
A few days ago, I posted my camera & set up from this spot... so I thought it fitting to kick off the week with the shot from the spot. ;)

Rained all night, then opened up just enough to create a little magical light... and YES I DID get up for sunrise! It was the opening day of my 5 day Eastern Sierra Sojourn (http://karenhutton.com/2017/03/my-eastern-sierra-sojourn/) and I wasn't about to miss a moment!

After this short window of loveliness, heavens closed back up again... the sun was up, waving in the new day... and it was time to head on down the road.

New Blog Post: "My Eastern Sierra Sojourn".

I took a few days for a venture down to the Eastern Sierras, for some Eastern-style contemplative time before hitting it on my next few events. Took tons of photos... and shared measurable amounts of them right here: http://karenhutton.com/2017/03/my-eastern-sierra-sojourn/.

"Alabama Cactus*: Alabama Hills, CA

It may still be a wintery mix at home and up in those mountains, but down in the Alabama Hills of Lone Pine and nearby towns, spring is in the air! It's so much fun to experience the dual seasons.

Down here amongst the big mountains, wide spaces, dramatic changes and gorgeous light I've been able to reeeeally take a breath. Listen. And HEAR! It's been glorious.

This cactus said hi, BTW.

"Snow Fields on High": Eastern Sierras, CA

Mountains...up close, faraway, color, black and white, morning, noon, night. I love them like you can't even believe. They are a part of me. I am more myself when I am in and around them. As I arrive in their midst, I weep as wise, timeless mountainous arms wrap themselves around me and welcome me in that deep bass voice of theirs. I love when they do that.

New blog post Thursday! (I made that up, heh.): http://karenhutton.com/2017/03/fujilove-live-nyc-feb-2017/.

I visited New York last month for FujiLove LIVE and shared a ton of pics and thoughts about the whole adventure. It's kind of like an "as seen by..." visual journey. :D

Photographically, my mission was: take 1 camera (my X-T2) and 1 lens (23mm f1.4) and create. It was freeing, fun and a fabulous exercise!

I'm back from a quick little road trip; mostly it was like a little mini K-Hutt reboot. I didn't go that far... just enough to shake some calcification loose. Sometimes ya just gotta do that.

I wasn't so much on the hunt for the perfect shot as I was creating space for new stuff I've been thinking about. I can tell it's going to take alot of breath and allowing, not foot-tapping and forcing. Dangit! I've got those perfected! hahahah...

Anyway, just sharing a few "as seen by" moments along the way, including the little cabin where I stayed at Sorensen's Resort in Hope Valley - and the incredible color on Lake Tahoe when I stopped along the way.

Bound: NYC
[cue heroic music]
Today, I will not be bound by the chains of anyone's false "reality". Today, I will listen to my soul. To the whispers it has gently - yet relentlessly - breathed into my ear for a lifetime, never relinquishing the hope that one day I would wake up, listen... and hear.

Today, I shall seize the front wheel of this mighty Life cycle and I will RIDE!!

In case you were wondering.

What'chu up to today?

Wow. This film that +Justin Majeczky and I made on the LAST day I had the Fujifilm GFX in my possession captures a "certain something" I could never put into words. (It almost didn't happen!) The GFX is sublime. Huge thanks to Fujifilm for the opportunity to try it out in my winter wonderland world in the mountains!

Justin is an incredible storyteller. It was SO much fun creating with him! Huge thanks go his way for helping me share a bit of my story and heart - and capturing the spirit of it all. I've been so moved by the entire experience.

A month from now I'll be in the Great Smoky Mountains taking part in the Fujifilm X-Photographers Travel & Nature Summit from April 5-9, 2017. Here's the rundown on the lowdown: https://fujifilmxphotosummits.com

I'll be in Tennessee with +Dan Bailey and the legendary founders of this event; +Jack Graham and +Bill Fortney, along with a whole bunch of really fun participants. Space IS limited - but I hear there are still a few openings. So if you've ever wanted to visit the Smokies, try out some awesome camera gear and get tips from some incredible folks on your travel and nature photography - this might be the ticket.

"Delicate Lady Drops": Truckee, CA
What do you do when roads are closed and you really can't go anywhere? Go take photos in your yard, of course! At least that's what I did one morning last month when we had about 3 hours of blue sky (before it clouded over and started storming again) and I only had 2 hours or snow removal to do. The reward for the last hour: grab the camera and make macros!

I did this one with my Fujifilm X-T20 and 60mm f/2.4 lens. I dubbed it: Magnificent Macro Morning! Didn't do much post-processing to this one, either. It was pretty much SOOC, except I lightened up the leaves and gave 'em a little more contrast. That's it.

THIS weekend, I escaped for some sun in the Bay Area. Ahhhhhh. While I'm gone (for only for a couple of days)... 3 more feet of snow is falling at our house! The interstate just opened after being closed... more »

Down here - a bit brisk, but beautiful puffy clouds and sunshine. You'd never know a storm was raging up the mountain. Sounds like the beginning of a spooky novel, doesn't it? Heh.

Sign ups are coming in, my friends - but there are still some spaces left in my September 24-29, 2017 "Artist's Voice" retreat in Cannes, France.

This is THE event to attend if you want to take your artistic eye, approach and photography to the next level. Y'know, go deeper, discover what your heart and soul REALLY want to say... and at last get it across in your images.

The whole scoop is here: http://karenhutton.com/June2017.

Feel free to share with friends and loved ones whom you think would LOVE to join us in France, where art and life are practically synonymous with the air we breathe.

The Wonder Cafe: New York City

I took one camera (Fujifilm X-T2) and one lens (23mm f/1.4) to New York this past weekend for +FujiLove LIVE and it was so much fun to feel lighter yet limited at the same time!

Lighter for obvious reasons (instead of my usual landscape-based bag 'o gear)... but fun to have a "limitation" that creates a creativity parameter. I always make up little exercises like that for myself, whether I'm out in nature or in a city. It keeps me on my toes and in the present moment. :D

(And lordy, what a gorrrrgeous lens that is! Wow.)

Snow 'N Sun: Truckee, Ca
This lady and her dog (like the rest of us) had been cooped up for a week last month, as the "atmospheric river" of rain and snow bucketed down on us last month. 25 feet later, we got THIS day, upon which many of us ventured out.

She had her doggie... I had the Fujifilm GFX 50S. Heh. I took this photo with it. The light was gorgeous, the colors slatey, rich and mysterious, the snow DEEP. Our entire world had been transformed within a few days into the stuff dreams are made of!

The storm meant I hadn't been able to get out for many of the short 6 days I had the camera, but when I did... wow. Just amazing.

I wrote a Behind-The-Shot piece for the +Really Right Stuff blog recently: http://blog.reallyrightstuff.com/behind-the-shot-with-karen-hutton/. What will all the storms, power outages and and travel hoopla of late, I was waiting for the perfect moment to share it with you. This is it!

It was all about capturing this shot - and the drop-everything moment that got the ball rolling. Some fun photos there too.. including an image that shows how I have my tripod/ballhead set up. It's a bit different than alot of people, or so I hear. I dunno - seems perfectly sensible to me!

Hope you enjoy it! :D

Snow. Snow is on my mind. LOTS of snow and it's still bucketing down. Feels like January again, which was when this shot was taken with the Fujifilm GFX 50S. Wrote a blog post about my 6 days with that beauty - it was an epic tale of me and the elements. It's here in case you missed it: www.karenhutton.com/GFX.

For now, more snow. Lots 'n lots of snow. Did I mention that? Interstate's closed on and off, since max chains aren't even helping with traction, many local roads closed. Got my exercise though! A couple of hours behind a snowblower, shovel and broom (to knock snow that was pulling all of our trees to the ground!).

See the leaning trees in this image? Yeah, they were really leaning, from the weight of the snow. 2 days later most of those leaning trees had come down. I felt a little sick to my stomach when I realized that. +Justin Majeczky and I had walked... more »

I felt a little sick to my stomach when I realized that. +Justin Majeczky and I had walked under many of them when we were out filming on my final day with the camera. When I returned those 2 days later, it was like a war zone with fully mature trees yanked up by their roots.

So yeah. I'm saying hi (Hi!) as I sit it out in whiteout conditions here in the mountains.

I head to NYC tomorrow night for Fujilove LIVE... think good thoughts for all the roads being open, the airport being open and a safe flight! Can't wait to see everyone there!___

As promised! My story of 6 days with Fujifilm's new GFX 50S camera on my blog: www.karenhutton.com/gfx!

That week was about way more than beta testing... I think of it as (cue movie trailer voice) a hero's journey, a challenge of mind, body, spirit and pocketbook! How's that for a billboard? hahah. But seriously... that was a mind-boggling week on SO many levels.

I share it all on my blog today. :D
Plus, 20+ new images from the GFX. OMG, what a camera... and paintbrush! Swoon.

I was incredibly fortunate to be one of 6 people in the U.S. testing and creating images with it last month. It is truly "all that."

Tomorrow, I've a brand new MONSTER blog post going live with a ton of images from the brand new Fujifilm GFX 50S! www.karenhutton.com/blog.

I'll post it here too. Stay tuned!! :D

But for today, here is another yummy image from the small and mighty X-T20 camera and 16-55mm lens. A moody, wintery sort of offering, from the end of a moody winter's day here in the mountains.

All these new cameras and their capabilities continue to blow my mind. I'm not a techhie or anything, but I do love the right tool for the job! And I'm so incredibly grateful to Fujifilm for enabling me with INCREDIBLE tools to explore my creative vision... and hopefully, encourage you to go deeper into yours.

It's a magnificent journey we're on, my friends!

Y'know what's better than spring in Italy?
[I know, I know, it's hard to come up with something!]

How about: YOU in Italy in the spring!
Oh wait, wait: How about a $900 discount on the trip of a lifetime?
Yeah. Now we're talkin'. :D

I'm heading to Italy in May, as part of the awesome +Discovery Photo Tours team. I'll be co-leading (along with my good friend and veteren tour leader +Ken Kaminesky) a fab adventure which starts in Rome and ends in Cinque Terra. #DreamsComeTrue!

*Click on the image or this link below for the entire scoop:* http://bit.ly/2lrWMbx

Will YOU be part of this crew? I can only hope so!

Why the discount? Well, it's sure not because it's lame or anything (I don't go on lame trips). It's because this one got announced a little late and DPT knows that a hefty discount makes it SO much easier to plan last-minute adventures.

BTW... the price on the website reflects the discount. Next time... it'll be full fare!

I CAN'T WAIT!!
And I seriously... and joyfully... hope I get to see you there.
Glass of wine at sunset on the veranda, anyone? :D

COVER PHOTO ALERT!
I did an interview for Fujifilm Magazine and my favorite natural wonder ended up on the cover! Sweet, sweet Lake Tahoe. She's a beauty, that one.

Here's the issue: http://us.fujifilmxmagazine.com/18/. You can download the app on your iPhone or iPad, it looks gorgeous on it!

My interview starts on Page 4... and includes a bunch of images that I'm so proud to share with this hugely enthusiastic global audience. Man, there's NOTHING as peppy as a Fujifilm fan, is there?

Color me grateful for about a thousand reasons today; this being just one of them.

I love making abstracts. I just do. Not all the time, but AT times, creating a good abstract is one of the most satisfying things.

Take this one. It was a hand-held (purposely) motion-blurred flower. Then in Photoshop, there were colors and textures (that I made myself as well) and light and layers and all kinds of yummy ingredients poured into the cauldren and stirred until done.

It's not something that'll ever get a 1000 Likes (or even a 100!)... but it's a division of art I love creating because it feels so in alignment with who I am. As easy and delightful to do as falling softly into vat of chocolate. Or clouds. Or whatever feels amazing to you. Even old jammies. Yeah, like that.
In fact... I named this one "Old Jammies".

Kidding.
I just wanted to say that. 😜
