Robert Scoble7,566,196@104987932455782713675 and I are talking about how the filters work on Facebook and why they aren't as nice to photographers as Google+ is.  Which got me a ton of questions about my feed, and what I'm seeing/learning about how the filters work and how to "game" them to get things through to more people's feeds on Facebook. I'm linking to here from Facebook, so there. This one is for the Facebook fans (or haters)2014-08-07 01:11:30136

Keith Barrett1,150,611Meet for lunch (and maybe things after) in Epcot at the Sunshine Seasons food court (lower level of "The Land" pavilion). Requires you can enter the park to meet up. There are many things we can try 1. Get a fast past to Soarin' (if they are available). I can ask the cast member to take a photo of us all lined up in the seating.  The same thing at Test Track is also possible. 2. No one has recorded Glass video of "Listen to the Land" or the "Universe of Energy" yet. 3. Sit in a circle and each take a photo of their perspective. We can then stitch them together later. 4. We can all play and record the "Agent P" game (formally Kim Possible). 5. We can take over the English Pub or have margaritas in Mexico. Make sure your Glass is charged up :-)Orlando 1st Google Glass Meetup (Epcot)2013-09-01 12:00:009

Hillary Clinton's Interview About Immigration, Disney and H-1B

Computerworld article by +Patrick Thibodeau summarizing Clinton's recent interview, and includes reactions from me and other tech industry professionals.

She starts off with understanding about the problem, but then dismisses it as collateral damage to the bigger issue of undocumented aliens. I think it's safe to say don't expect her to do anything about the STEM job replacement problem.

Google Hangouts On Air Moving To YouTube Live

It makes sense this would get moved to YouTube Live. That's where the broadcast landed anyway, and Google removed events from Google+ a while back. However it also indicates that Google is either focusing more on a dedicated video & streaming service that a social one where video appears inline, or that they are simply moving it to the teams and resources responsible for maintaining it.

And I apologize, but it needs to be in English or English fan sub.

What Are Indian H-1B Bulk IT Companies Like To Work For?

Ever wonder what its like working for an Indian bulk IT labor company? Glassdoor and Indeed offer insights from current and former employee feedback. Here's some about HCL, the company Disney used to replace IT professionals at Disney World. The interesting thing is when you read through them on the site, the negative reviews sound like they come from genuine people, and most of the positive ones sound like they came from a PR script (usually with 5 stars). Out of the 6000 reviews listed, these are a few that caught my attention. These were all written WITHIN THE LAST 5 MONTHS, so it's current feedback. You can see the trends.

"upper management does not seem to have any inhibitions regarding dishonesty. They will lie to you. They will lie to their customers & clients, and are not ashamed of it."

"They have extreme cultural bias, and will only promote non-Indians to avoid legal action being taken against them. Unless you are of Indian heritage, be prepared to be treated as inferior, and discriminated against. Even then, their culture embraces the idea of "elite" family lines/lineage, so even some of their own nationality are treated just as badly as Americans."

"HCL suckers people into contract positions with the hope of getting them to work for pennies."

"Pay is garbage. Impossible to contact anyone at their office. Online portal is the worst I've ever seen. Paychecks were usually late. No actual support from field agents."

"There is no such thing as work life balance"

"The only decent thing is Healthcare. Nothing else to add here, except it's a pretty building. Management has absolutely no idea how to manage people much less a business. You do not value your employees at all, not even a little bit. You harp about being present for shifts, yet you are rarely present when needed. You intimidate and threaten, you use favoritism, you discriminate against those with disabilities unless they are a favorite. The pay is barely enough to make ends meet."

_"Pros: before they hire you, they promise you a great Career opportunity
Cons: Don't know where to start ... They treat you like a slave. Managers don't care about their employee. You should be fine with Hard working 50+ hours a week."_

"It's "our way or the highway" for the most part even though they have all this "Work Smarter" mantra and focus on "Ideapreneurship" (whatever that is)"

"They have their own form of English. They make up words that don't exist. They expect you to figure out their HR and work policies through osmosis, nobody really explains anything."

"Pros: Free coffee. yep that's about it."

"Pros: Worked with some good people caught up in the same mess I was."

"They keep foreign nationals/H-1B people over US citizens."

"Employee first is just a marketing gimmic"

"The company that had "Employee first" has become "never mind the employees"

_"Pros: No one knows anything so you can fly under the radar.
Cons: Many things to hide from client"_

"micro-mannagement. bad hr mainly because its in india"

"They do staff in the United States, other than that there is nothing really positive to say about this company. They don't value employees. The pay is horrible, no room to grow unless you are already with the "in" group."

"The HR infrastructure i sin India which means long - ridiculous processes."

"Great company if you dont want growth and want to just hang-on. They claim Employee first and customer second is their philosophy but always end-up cheating both :). They change process and policy frequently so that no one can get real benefits."

"80% of the work is done by 20% of the people."

Doesn't quite fit with Disney's image of quality, leadership and people does it? Do you feel secure that most companies have transferred management of your personal, medical and financial data to them?

Disney Terminates Some Imagineering Staff

"As part of the reductions, voluntary severance packages were offered to senior staffers, those with longer terms of service or nearing retirement, Disney said."

I wouldn't be surprised if stats showed most of these people were over 40 or with the company 10+ years, like the initial tech terminations. The priority is to cut payroll costs, and high performers with the company long-term, or nearing retirement age, are the more expensive compared to entry level or H-1B contractors.

Re:Zero Japan vs the West

I'm hoping my Japanese followers will help me understand this post that appeared on Twitter.

From my perspective this chart is true. After such heart wrenching support from Rem, Subaru is a moron for not choosing her. Why can Japanese men, and women, accept this so readily?

And if you haven't realized it. "Re:Zero", "Erased' and "Alderamin on the Sky" are the best series of the year ;-).

Indian IT Outsourcing Landscape Is Changing

There have been several Visa/India-IT-Outsourcing news stories this week. Here are some bullets from them and one of the stories.

- The Indian IT industry has avoided its own government regulatory oversight concerning labor and this is expected to change eventually.

- The cost savings of outsourcing to Indian IT labor is less than half of what it was just 3 years ago, dropping from 80% to 30% according to IBM who have physical offices in India, and is still rapidly decreasing. As the labor pool there increasingly dries up, competition and market forces are causing employment compensation to rise.

- Companies are learning that the needs of IT cannot be addressed simply by large volumes of low-cost labor. There are skills and risk savings that come only with years of experience.

- Companies are learning that the needs of IT cannot be addressed simply by large volumes of low-cost labor. There are skills and risk savings that come only with years of experience.

- [Due to the Disney layoffs and the Presidential campaigns] public awareness of H-1B abuse and American job loss is greater than it has been in the past 9 years, putting pressure on visa laws to become tougher. Some replaced employees have refused gag orders to keep such replacements quiet. There is also an increasing government concern about the privacy and security of legally protected data.

- The technology experience and skills needed by companies (architecting, cloud services, innovative thinking) exceeds what is commonly provided by Indian contracting. India IT bulk labor providers are attempting to address this with new types of training.

This problem seems on all my Macs, independent of browser. Except for LastPass, Xmarks and EFF's "https Everywhere", they have no plug-ins in common. Even if I disable all plug-ins it will still occur, so I've confirmed it's not the running browser on my laptop.

I'm at a loss as to what's causing this if it's my end, or why Google changed the criteria concerning my account if it's on their end. They provide no imfornation about what kind of traffic, destinations or examples. It's an accusation with secret evidence.

Has enyone else gone through this and solved it?

Sanders Attacks Disney and H-1B Program

Sanders is less likely to flip-flop onthis issue than the other 2 candidates, plus the other two have a history of exploiting H-1B for their benefit. I wish Sanders had a concrete plan for addressing it. It's mostly millenials that support him, and being young they're at almost no risk of replacement by immigrant contractors to cut salaries, medical and/or pension costs, and they're not going to encounter age discrimination if they do need to job hunt, so they won't see this as a problem (yet).

Disney Moves To Dismiss Indian Replacement Lawsuit From Former IT Profesionals

Not surprising they'd file a motion to dismiss, but HCL claims some odd interpretations of the law in defense here. Since the terminated IT professionals were forced to train their replacements and share cubicles, almost overnight without notice, there obviously had to be some collaboration with HCL on what was planned. It would be interesting to read the actual contract.

Your Wallet Card will stop working on June 30

Hello Keith,

We want to thank you for using the Wallet Card and for any feedback you’ve shared. After careful consideration, we’ve decided that we’ll no longer support the Wallet Card as of June 30. Moving forward, we want to focus on making it easier than ever to send and receive money with the Google Wallet app.

Here’s what this means for you:

-- You can only make purchases with your Wallet Card until June 30.
-- You won’t be able to add money to your Wallet Balance from a debit card or bank account after May 1, but money you receive from others will still be added to your balance.
-- If you have money in your Wallet Balance after May 1, you can keep it there, send it to others, or cash out anytime for free.

If you’re interested in finding a replacement for your Wallet Card, both American Express and Simple offer debit accounts with similar features, including a card. Plus, we’ve teamed up with them so that Wallet Card users will get an added bonus after signing up. Note: See https://www.google.com/wallet/card/#alternatives

As we wind down support for the Wallet Card, we’re excited to continue enhancing Google Wallet to give you the best possible experience when paying friends and family. We’re hard at work on new features, so keep an eye out for those in the coming months.

If you have any questions, visit our FAQ.

Hyundai Elantra Mid/Hack Needed

I am now an owner of a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. For some weird reason, South Korea doesn't believe people in the U.S. have a need to lock anything up (like the legal paperwork showing the address belonging to the garage door opener in the car, or their wallet at the beach), so neither the glove box or the center console arm rest has a lock.

Anyone know a professional looking custom hack or replacement part that provides one? I'd prefer a locking glovebox but I'll take either.

Chip Skimmers Exist

The chip layout is a standard and the readers are pretty cheap. I own two myself (one for a medical data card and one a general purpose CAC reader). And there are Open Source software for them, although they tend to be either wildly general purpose or very specific. While you can read them, like RFIDs you can't decode the encrypted data of commerical uses like banking without the proper software or keys. However 9 out of every 10 stores I shop at that have chip enabled credit card readers are non-functioning and I have to swipe the card anyway.

And if you're wondering how vulnerable people  are to skimmers; whatch this video: https://thehackernews.com/2016/03/credit-card-skimming-hack.html

In STEM, IT Alone Has Coordinated Effort Based On False Claims To Eliminate Americans From The Workforce

Very thorough report on how technology has a talent glut, not shortage, and how it's being cannibalized, much more than other STEM areas, to eliminate American citizens from it.

It is, thus, a most interesting situation that of all the STEM fields, it is only a very particular slice of the technology sector that seems to be unable to find U.S. workers and seems unable, or perhaps unwilling, to use free-market mechanisms to recruit them. And, as the data on the education and background of its workforce indicate, the IT industry has a very large pool of potential college graduates to draw from; although it needs highly skilled workers, unlike the market for scientists, it is not employing people with very specialized education that takes a decade or more to acquire.

It is peculiar, indeed, that despite financial resources second to none and an all-star reputation among our college graduates, the IT industry alone among the STEM industries has a special congressionally-provided and discounted labor supply and still claims it is unable to fill its ranks.
...
The fundamental problem of U.S. and foreign IT outsourcing firms’ hiring practices is the exclusion of U.S. workers–whether native or immigrant, citizen or permanent resident—which is made possible by specially crafted legislation for this purpose; it is legislation that serves as a congressionally-provided subsidy to a highly profitable industry to hire guestworkers at the expense of jobs for U.S. workers. But there is another, curiously overlooked outcome which is the creation of workforces that are highly segregated, that have a level of exclusivity seldom seen in the U.S. in the past half-century. That is, IT workforces that are not just majority, but levels over 70, 80, often over 90 percent one demographic group (in the case of one large IT company, between 94% and 100% of its workforce at its various worksites are a single demographic group, and other news reports suggest this is not uncommon).

Trading Stocks Without Fees And No Minimum Balance

I've been using Robinhood to trade stocks for free. Robinhood is a mobile-only app for trading in stocks, ETFs and funds without commissions, fees (see notes at end) or a minimum balance. The app is well designed, easy to use, has a decent alert system, and completes transactions quickly. It allows you to perform trades, create watch lists, and read news alerts. It's available for Android and iOS devices. The service plans to stay fee-free and makes money off the interest of any uninvested cash in people's accounts and from the interest on upcoming margin accounts.

It only works for local exchange stocks, funds and ETFs. I can't invest in foreign companies except if they're included in a fund or ETF. They expect this to change as their service expands.

Transferring money into Robinhood takes about 3 days, and you may see the money withdrawn from your bank account but not show up in Robinhood for another 1-2 days after that. This is (currently) normal.

For your first week or two you'll likely trade frequently because of the freedom from fees. There is a current restriction that funds from a sale aren't available to you for 3 days (they just introduced an ability to get this removed called "Robin Instant". If you use my referral link you'll help me qualify for it), and this delay will eventually make you slow down and think longer term.

Because there are no fees or minimum, I was able to try things with small amounts that would never otherwise work. For example; I made $30 profit my first day of trading. On other services, where each trade would have cost me $7-$10, I would have spent $70 doing it. After a week of trading I'm up about $80 in the account.

It's (too) easy to fall into a day-trading mentality or habit on Robinhood. Day-trading (according to FINRA) is buying then selling the same stock on the same day, and performing that type of transaction at least 4 times in a 5 business day window. There are some additional criteria (see:http://www.finra.org/investors/day-trading-margin-requirements-know-rules for details), but normally once you are flagged as day-trading you are required to have a permanent $25k equity balance in the account at all times. I say normally because this only applies to margin accounts; cash accounts are exempt from this. Robinhood does not currently support margin accounts so (according to Robinhood) you are not subject to day-trading requirements (see https://support.robinhood.com/hc/en-us/articles/203585005-Day-Trading ). If you perform day-trading style activity, keep in mind that without "Robinhood Instant" the funds from your sale will not be released for 3 days, so you won't be able to do this every day. Although I really don't have to worry about it, I've chosen to develop my thinking by tracking my trades for their compliance or violation of day-trading rules anyway.

It's easy to end up with hundreds of trades after a year, which would be a tax-return nightmare, but I understand Robinhood provides an importable file for Turbotax of your transactions each February. I don't know if it will work with the H&R tax software though.

Robinhood plans to provide an API as well: https://support.robinhood.com/hc/en-us/articles/203585145-Robinhood-API Wouldn't it be cool if I was allowed to connect it to IFTTT? :-)

I also use stocktwits.com, stockflare.com, fool.com to help me make decisions.

I love this app and hope it manages to thrive without losing its fee-free advantage. The only way to do some of the trading I'd like is if the transaction didn't cost more than a few pennies.

Note 1: There are circumstances where a roughly 2 cent charge will occur on Sells, but it's for the SEC and FINRA fees: https://support.robinhood.com/hc/en-us/articles/204371975-Small-0-02-Fee-After-Selling-Stock- You may want to keep this in mind when dealing with trading penny stocks.

Note 2: If you're worried about having money in a stock trading startup (since many startups, including one or two previous stock trading apps, have closed up shop), there are legal safeguards, insurance and precedents protecting you. if Robinhood suddenly became unavailable what would happen next is unclear and depends on circumstances and the size of your portfolio, but it's most likely your portfolio would just be moved to a brokerage and you'd have to deal their fees. Uninvested cash may have a different risk, but in all cases there's some insurance protections up to certain amounts. There's a discussion about this on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/RobinHood/comments/3qce8v/what_happens_if_robinhood_goes_away/

Help me gain faster standing by checking Robinhood out in the App Store using this link! http://share.robinhood.com/keithb___
