Take all sorts of photos of your fellow walkers, and later, tag away.  Get close, get far, get creative! - _Photo Lessons_ - I'll be stopping a few times throughout the walk to set up for shots.  I'll talk through my settings and describe my setup.  People are welcome to look through my camera. - _Need Photo Advice_ - Come up any time throughout the walk and ask me or Thomas anything!  We're happy to help.  No question is too dumb, and we are happy to help! - _Sharing_ - Get back home to the sweet internet after the event and upload your photos to the event.  Tag people in the photos, and tag the photos with #GlassPhotowalk    We'll have a TON more details soon...  this will be a great celebration of photography! *Watch Live:* Can't make it?  @112471890387110967375 will be hosting a @106837773805813749834 session.  I'll share it live to my stream too! *What to Bring:* Any camera will do - from a mobile phone to a big DSLR.  It's all good! :) *Party Mode:* Put your Android or iPhone into Party Mode for the event! We won't code our machines, we'll train them. Agree. That's the very perceptive summary of this Wired cover story.

Ah, the feel and smell of freshly printed books! I fondly handle the first paper copies of The Inevitable. I love the zippy orange color.

A good book today would be a reproduction of the first decade of Wired magazine, as it was, ads and all. One reporter for the New Yorker read the back issues (when I was editing) recently and was surprised by what she found.

Important information to know.

Please reshare. It might save a life.
Drowning doesn't look like drowning. It's time for the annual re-post of maritime safety expert and former USCG rescue swimmer +Mario Vittone 's article.

What's happening physiologically when someone is drowning -- why it doesn't look like on TV:

1. Except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing. Speech is the secondary or overlaid function. Breathing must be fulfilled before speech occurs.

2. Drowning people’s mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water. The mouths of drowning people are not above the surface of the water long enough for them to exhale, inhale, and call out for help. When the drowning people’s mouths are above the surface, they exhale and inhale quickly as their mouths start to sink below the surface of the water.

3. Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water’s surface. Pressing down on the surface of the water permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe.

4. Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements. Physiologically, drowning people who are struggling on the surface of the water cannot stop drowning and perform voluntary movements such as waving for help, moving toward a rescuer, or reaching out for a piece of rescue equipment.

5. From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response people’s bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.”

This doesn’t mean that a person that is yelling for help and thrashing isn’t in real trouble—they are experiencing aquatic distress. Not always present before the Instinctive Drowning Response, aquatic distress doesn’t last long—but unlike true drowning, these victims can still assist in their own rescue. They can grab lifelines, throw rings, etc.

Look for these other signs of drowning when persons are in the water:

Head low in the water, mouth at water level
Head tilted back with mouth open
Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus
Eyes closed
Hair over forehead or eyes
Not using legs—vertical
Hyperventilating or gasping
Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway
Trying to roll over on the back
Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder

More on the topic at +Mario Vittone's website:
http://mariovittone.com/?s=drowning+doesn%27t+look+like+drowning

(The article is available in several publications, not just Slate, but this version of the article includes short videos.)___Important information to know.

The biggest crowdfunded project in history has raised $125 million for a something that is almost impossible to explain -- a distributed autonomous organization, DAO -- a cross between a VC, a fund, a cryptocurrency, and perhaps a ponzi scheme. I don't fully understand it yet..
https://daohub.org/index.html

Here are the instructions on how to fund this DAO:

Nerds only, please.

Create an account on bitfinex or Kraken.
Verify that account. You will need to upload a wide variety of documents proving you are who you say you are and stuff. It's all regulatory stuff. Once you upload this stuff, it takes 3-5 days.
Follow the instructions on the exchange to deposit USD into that exchange. This, depending on your bank and the wire transfer, will take another 3-5 days.
Now you have USD in your exchange account and can buy ETH with it.

Once you have all the ETH you want, withdraw that ETH into a wallet that you control. So you will need a wallet....
So....while you are waiting for your verification and transfer, download and install Mist / Ethereum Wallet. Run it so it can sync the blockchain.
When you run it, it'll prompt you to make a new account. Create a password that you will never ever forget and create the account. Then, it'll give you an address that starts with 0x.. This what you will enter on Kraken or Bitfinex to move your ETH from their account to your own.
To safely keep your account you have 3 pieces of information: Your address (0x....), your password, and the private key. The private key is like a password, but way more intense. Plus, it's a password that is protected by another password. In Ethereum Wallet, this private key is stored in the keystore file. You need to make a backup of this in case anything happens to your computer. In Ethereum Wallet, go to the top bar and find ACCOUNTS -> BACKUP -> ACCCOUNTS. It'll open up a folder and inside you will see a file. This file is your private key. Copy this to a USB drive and safely store the USB drive in a different physical location than your computer (in case your house explodes).___

I do a podcast with Mark Frauenfelder where we ask makers about their tools. On our 53rd show we ask Chris Anderson, former editor of Wired and best selling author, about his four favorite cool tools. Chris makes drones so his answers are great. You can listen here:

Ah, the feel and smell of freshly printed books! I fondly handle the first paper copies of The Inevitable. I love the zippy orange color.

This can't be right, but it seems as if the US commercial airlines have decided to allow the most easily scared person on the plane decide if it takes off. What's weird to me about the apparent current policy are two things.

1) When someone complains they are "uncomfortable" with the threat of another passenger, there appears to be no attempt to verify, confirm, investigate the claim. All attention is on dealing with their report, going through the procedures, but not hearing what the target person has to say until the plane has already been delayed and "professionals" intervene. Therefore the initial fate of the flight is in the hands of most easily disturbed person on the plane.

2) There does not appear to be any penalty for a "false," incorrect, or unappropriate accusation. With no counterforce to be accurate or reasonable the most ignorant or... more »

I could be wrong. Are instances such as the one below, examples of a good policy we don't know about breaking down, or are they happening with more frequency because the policy is at it appears to be: let the most easily scared person (whether passenger or crew) dictate the security status?

Last month I spent 10 days in Kerala, India, tracking temple elephant processions. Lot's of elephants, lots of color, lots of heat, lots of music, lots of people. It was a memorable experience. At some of the festivals I was the only tourist. My usual caveat applies: my images do not represent what it looks like on average; although in this case, these pictures are more representative than usual.
