Dr. Kurt Smith83,172Join me for the first the next *_'Talking Relationships'_ Hangout On Air series.* We'll continue the discussion from the past two Hangouts (http://youtu.be/Y0j7CeesErg  http://youtu.be/xr2UFYfeDak) about love by exploring:  _*Can You Make Someone Love You?* A lot of people wish their partner loved them better. If your partner doesn’t love you the way you want or need - What can you do about that? What if your partner is no longer in love with you - Can you change that? We'll discuss these difficult questions about being in love when your partner isn't loving you back._ Join me *Tuesday, September 17, 4 pm PST/7 pm EST* for a 30 minute discussion of relationships and love. This event will be Live right here (in this post) as well as on my stream, so just check back at the above time to watch as we dig deeper into wanting someone to love us. *_Got a personal experience you can share?_* Get a Live Seat in the discussion and talk with a relationship expert (me) about it. Just leave a comment below stating that you'd like to participate (not just watch) and why. I'm looking for people with a related experience to share - past or present (_and a few good men to join in too_). Let me know in the comments and I'll add you to the participant's list. *_Got a question on this topic?_* Ask away! Leave your question in the comments below. Are you going? *Don't forget to mark your calendar for Tuesday in 2 weeks!* #hangoutsonair   #hangouts   #hoa   #relationshipadvice   #relationshipproblems  'Talking Relationships' with Kurt Smith - E03 - Can You Make Someone Love You?2013-09-18 01:00:0044

I lucked out with an astounding view out my hotel window in Shanghai. This is from the Peninsula Hotel which overlooks the Bund promenade, and the Huangpu River. While the skyline across the river is magnificent, the truly spectacular show is the never ending parade of very large ships zooming up and down the river.

"Closing the loop" as a cultural trend.
Chris Anderson, former Wired editor, says:

The [drone] stuff on the shelves at Walmart is better than the military stuff. The reason the toys are more sophisticated than the military drones is because the users are less sophisticated. They just want to push a button and have magic happen. The military wants to train pilots to learn how to do things right. Consumers just push a button—magic.

"Kosinski and his team tirelessly refined their models. In 2012, Kosinski proved that on the basis of an average of 68 Facebook "likes" by a user, it was possible to predict their skin color (with 95 percent accuracy), their sexual orientation (88 percent accuracy), and their affiliation to the Democratic or Republican party (85 percent). But it didn't stop there. Intelligence, religious affiliation, as well as alcohol, cigarette and drug use, could all be determined. From the data it was even possible to deduce whether someone's parents were divorced.

From the data it was even possible to deduce whether someone's parents were divorced.

The strength of their modeling was illustrated by how well it could predict a subject's answers. Kosinski continued to work on the models incessantly: before long, he was able to evaluate a person better than the average work colleague, merely on the basis of ten Facebook "likes." Seventy "likes" were enough to outdo what a person's friends knew, 150 what their parents knew, and 300 "likes" what their partner knew. More "likes" could even surpass what a person thought they knew about themselves. On the day that Kosinski published these findings, he received two phone calls. The threat of a lawsuit and a job offer. Both from Facebook."___

The time to get great gift suggestions is AFTER the holidays. So what was the coolest gift you received this year? Let me know with a link if possible.

Every year Edge asks its circle of writers and scientists a question. This year the question was, "What scientific notion should be more widely known?" My answer is Premature Optimization, which I explain here: https://www.edge.org/response-detail/27063

My photos of the Other Tibet. This area is culturally Tibetan in west Sichuan, China. But instead of a high dry plateau, it's a rugged, lower terrain of fertile valleys. These pictures are from the valleys around the town of Danba. The folk here like to say, "We are Tibetan but not like the Tibetans of Tibet." They speak Tibetan, but eat Chinese. Their homes are Tibetan but their crops are Chinese. They are in between, and their own tribe, so to speak. I was the only tourist.

An avid reader and user of my Cool Tools book sent in his snapshot of how his dad marked up the good stuff. Yeah, it's all good stuff! I am proud to claim Cool Tools is the best all-around gift for anyone who wants to make stuff or make stuff happen. It's particularly aimed at the young and young at heart. This large sized book is much easier way to make use of the Cool Tools site's vast archive. We've done the hard work of culling and only featuring the best of the best tools. At this point there are less than a thousand copies remaining and they have been selling fast. No more will be printed. I doubt any will be left after the holidays.

I did not know much about Indonesia, the world's 4th most populous country. Two weeks ago I made a trip on lovely classical island of Java, which is a chain of volcanoes, seven of them active. Here's my photos. As always this is a biased and romantic view of the old culture. Much of Java does not look anything like this.

I recently hiked the Kumano Trail in Japan with two friends, +Craig Mod and Hugh Howey. It's a pilgrimage path that winds through forests and some small towns. Lots of color along the way.
