Remember kids. Once a company is big enough to have HR people, their job is never to "protect" the leaf-level employees (the ones with no reports) from the higher-ups. The job of HR is to protect the company from the leaf-levels. Any complaint that is brought forth will be viewed through the exclusive lens of how it will look like if it goes public. And how they can make it go away, undermining the employee's credibility in the process if it does.

The amount of mental gymnastics that pretty much everybody in the GOP is performing to pretend that whatever Trump is doing as our president is A-OK should clearly qualify this as an Olympic sport in 2020. After all, chess and bridge already applied for that, and they are nowhere near as exhausting as the next four years are going to be for Mitch, Ryan and friends.

Watched "The Matrix" yesterday with the kids for the first time (for them). Needed to pause a couple of times to explain what's happening with the setup. Once they got that, it went very smoothly.

They both enjoyed it very much. Then I mentioned that it had two sequels, and they immediately asked if they can watch those. And then I remembered how terrible (story-wise) the sequels were and I was all like...

"For a lot of people, the real assumption that they bring to the news, even beyond their partisan affiliations, is an expectation of a smooth narrative. They expect news stories to look like the movies or TV shows that they’re familiar with. Even if they’re regular journalism consumers, the stories they remember best are these well done stories that tell a compelling narrative and make them feel like they’re watching a movie or TV show."

"In reality, stories are messy and have real loose ends. That’s the real bias that readers have to combat, and it’s something that people in the media have to think about. Because, on the one hand we want to provide good, compelling narratives, but on the other hand, we don’t want people to think they live in this world that’s made up of these easy, compelling narratives. They don’t."

"Thompson would want us to see this: These are men and women who know that, by all intellectual and economic standards, they cannot win the game. So whether it be out of self-protection or an overcompensation for their own profound sense of shame, they lash out at politicians, judges, scientists, teachers, Wall Street, universities, the media, legislatures—even at elections. They are not interested in contemplating serious reforms to the system; they are either too pessimistic or too disappointed to believe that is possible. So the best they can do is adopt a position of total irreverence: to show they hate the players and the game."

"Understood in those terms, the idea that Trumpism is “populist” seems misplaced. Populism is a belief in the right of ordinary people, rather than political insiders, to rule. Trumpism, by contrast, operates on the presumption that ordinary people aren’t going to get any chance to rule no matter what they do, so they might as well piss off the political insiders using the only tool left available to them: the vote."

"While many commentators say Trump will have to bring back jobs or vibrancy to places like the Rust Belt if he wants to continue to have the support of people who voted for him, Thompson’s account suggests otherwise. Many if not most Trump supporters long ago gave up on the idea that any politician, even someone like Trump, can change the direction the wind is blowing. Even if he fails to bring back the jobs, Trump can maintain loyalty in another way: As long as he continues to offend and irritate elites, and as long as he refuses to play by certain rules of decorum—heaven forfend, the president-elect says ill-conceived things on Twitter!—Trump will still command loyalty. It’s the ethic, not the policy, that matters most."

Passengers whose oversized cabin bag is identified at the boarding gate will typically pay a penalty of $100 to take it on board. Travellers can pay in advance for larger pieces of cabin baggage, starting at $26.

The most annoying thing for me on my Monday/Friday flights between Atlanta and San Francisco are my fellow "business" passengers who take their entire thing on the plane with them. By the time all the diamond / gold / silver / tin medallion holders are done boarding, there is simply no overhead space left.

And given how tightly they are packing the seats these days, if I put my tiny messenger bag under the seat in front of me, I literally have no leg space left.
