'Forking Hell...' - Beaumaris, Anglesey

We had some crazy storms here in the UK over the weekend, and I managed to dash out into the local fields near home to catch this one as it rolled past angrily!

'Sunbeams Over The Bay' - Dinas Dinlle, Snowdonia

One of the hundreds of sunbeams I watched crossing the bay today, breaking through a chink in the clouds to fall on me during a stunning sunset at Dinas Dinlle.

'Into The Wild'- Stokksnes & Vesturhorn, Iceland

Evening light on the magnificent landscape of the basaltic black sands and golden dunes of Stokksnes, with the granite peaks of Vesturhorn behind.

Still sat on a bunch of images in the archives from leading this years Icelandic Adventure for Welshot Imaging, this one though, is one of my favourites. A last grab as I made my way back to our transport, thinking I would have to spend the next 30mins running all over the headland dragging people away from the views... to discover they were already there drinking vodka waiting ;-)

'The Golden Ridge' - Moel Eilio, Snowdonia

Looking back towards the peaks of Snowdon and Garnedd Ugain, up where I was shooting the milky way just a week ago, as the brief sunlight burst through the gap in the clouds over Anglesey.

Shot minutes after my previous post, I ran round the side of the mountain to be able to catch a view of the suns rays lighting up the ridge leading up to Snowdon... They never quite reached up to the peaks, disappointed...? Not at all :-)

'Breaking Light' - Moel Eilio, Snowdonia

Great evening for a walk up to the summit of Moel Eilio this evening with a good friend, the light was pretty subdued all evening, but that slot in the cloud looked promising all through the hike up... And sure enough it didn't disappoint when the sun finally reached it, spilling light across Waunfawr below, and onto Caernarfon & Anglesey beyond :-)

Fantastic sight, as brief as it was!

'Twilight Towns' - Snowdon Summit, Snowdonia National Park, Wales

There's nothing like being stood on the Snowdonian summits at 3500ft above sea-level to make you feel small at any time... But sat here after sunset and into the night watching the various cities, towns and village streetlights below and in the distance blink into life just amplified that feeling. Especially as I could see the lights shining out from the Isle of Man over in the distance, as well as Ireland and the Lake District in other directions... :)

This is the view from the summit of Snowdon, across Llanberis and Llyn Padarn bottom-left, over south-east Anglesey in the middle from Llangefni on the left to Llanddona on the right - and the towns of Port St Mary, Castletown and Douglas on the Isle of Man across the bay on the horizon.

'On Top Of The World' - Snowdon Summit, Snowdonia National Park -Wales

The milky way arching across the night sky above the summit of Snowdon, in a panorama image showing the view NE to SW through the sky.

After a good hike up to the summit for sunset yesterday, I hung around until the early hours as the skies were so clear, with views of the peaks from the Lake District, the Isle of Man and Ireland, all as clear as day and coming to life as streetlights blinked into action in the distance while dusk settled in below me.

As we're still under summer skies it still doesn't get fully dark as seen by the twilight left of shot, but its still possible to pick up some good detail in the galaxy on a new moon and clear night. The lights on the cost of Ireland can even be seen far-right too.

'Solstice Aurora' - Llanbadrig, Anglesey

The on-set and main impact of the Aurora display out over the sea on Monday night (June 22nd) from Anglesey in the UK, just far enough south at 53deg N to avoid too much summer light in the sky and still catch a faint hint of what would have been a superb display in full darkness.

'The Solstice Aurora' - Llanbadrig, Anglesey

The culmination of three coronal mass eruptions from the sun hitting Earth in a single day saw geomagnetic conditions reach the highest for this solar cycle, with a G5 geomagnetic storm peaking earlier in the evening... However with midsummer just behind us by a few days here, catching the results was always going to be a tall order... The conditions weakened off as it got darker for us in the UK, but sure enough we were still treated to a great display for a short while, starting around 1am even through the twilight still lingering on the horizon :-)

'Jagged' - Castell-Y-Gwynt, Snowdonia

Had a great morning's hike up through Cwm Idwal and onto the Glyderau over the weekend with Helen Iles Photography. Whilst the hike over Glyder Fawr had been under cloud to begin with, I was glad to see we were going to be afforded with a good view once we got across to Glyder Fach and the Castle of the Winds.

The fantastic view of the Ogwen Valley and Nant Ffrancon from my way up Y Garn yesterday evening, and while I thought my luck would be out as the rain started to fall on me near sunset, it did reward me with this beautiful rainbow spanning across the Glyderau and Tryfan, the gold of the Ogwen :-)

'The Spirit Of The Lake' - Llyn Llydaw, Snowdonia

I couldn't have picked a better night for a hike in Snowdonia... This was my 3am view of the milky way arching through the sky above Llyn Llydaw in the Snowdon horseshoe this morning :-)

I had a fairly clear cloud forecast and a 90min window of dark skies between the moon setting at 2am and dawn rising at 3:30 - and since it was a Saturday night it seemed a fair gamble...!

Now our summer skies are returning the views of the milky way are much better just before dawn, though it won't be long now before it's too light to see it at all.

This panorama is made from 33 exposures to capture the whole eastern sky. 20secs each, F2.8, ISO5000, at 24mm.

'Back In The Land Of Dragons' - Castell-Y-Gwynt, Snowdonia

Back into the mountains of Wales and far away from the volcanoes and glaciers of Iceland... After returning from the incredible landscape and sights they have there, my first trip out back here needed to be somewhere special...

I managed to avoid the Easter crowds by ascending up from the Mymbyr Valley onto Glyder Fach, passing barely a handful of people on the way. The sun was bright and warm all day with beautiful blue skies, and I came up to Castell Y Gwynt here as the passing clouds swirled around its peaks on their way through - a spectacular sight as always :-)

'Icy Flames' - Jokulsarlon, Iceland

A sunrise spent in and around the scattered icebergs lying on the beach at Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, and on the morning of the solar eclipse - couldn't have asked for better cloud-cover than this.

We found a good spot a little way off the main beach, and as the sun rose we watched the ice littering the beach catching the sunbeams and bursting in colour all around... while behind us the glacier was burning pink/orange as it rose up into the peaks. Amazing morning :-)

Quickly brought down to earth digging a minibus stuck in the sand to get out after, but thats another story....

The wild Atlantic waves crashing onto Stokksnes beach infront of one of the most magnificent backdrops on Earth :)

I got tired of the black sands getting in all my gear and ventured out onto the rocks to get as close as I dared to those wild waves, the last good light of the sunset was just burning through the mist beyond, giving the the mountain ridge in the distance some subtle colour.

I'm reliably informed the 3 small peaks peaking round the corner to the right are locally known as 'Batman Mountain', due to its profile (apparently even more so from the other side) :-)

'Ripples And Ridges' - Stokksnes & Mt Vesturhorn, Iceland

This was a location I'd wanted to get to for a long time, but its always been way out of reach on my previous trips to this island. Massive thanks to our guide on this trip, Aron, who went out of his way to make sure we got there whilst fitting everything else around it in terms of meals etc...

It was worth it too, black lava sands and golden dunes, with those surreal majestic peaks for a backdrop - beautiful light in a magical place :-)

I'll be back here someday for sure!

'Our Great Icelandic Adventure' - Eyrarbakki, Iceland

Fresh back from a wonderful and energising trip along the whole south coast of Iceland from one end to the other, leading the annual +Welshot Imaging Ltd  workshop trip to this wonderful country!

Right from the outset Day 1 it was non-stop from start to finish with stunning locations and sights, and I've made many happy memories and seen some amazing places in the last 5 days that will stay with me forever...

We arrived after an early morning flight on Tuesday the 17th (which meant I got no sleep the night before with prep and excitement...) and straight from the plane landing we were off and shooting images for 12 hrs through the day and evening. I had been tracking all day the progress of the C-class solar flare released by the sun a few days earlier and predicted to arrive that evening, and sure enough as... more »

I had been tracking all day the progress of the C-class solar flare released by the sun a few days earlier and predicted to arrive that evening, and sure enough as we finishing up our superb meal at Rauða Húsið as the night drew in, the aurora was already dancing for us.

So whilst all the crowds were getting some great shots at my fave Penmon, here's what they looked like a little further north, the whole sky from horizon to horizon on fire with the dancing light :-)___

'Mars, Venus & Moon' - Llanfaes, Anglesey

Great sight at the bottom of the road as I headed out for the evening earlier tonight. A lovely crescent moon starting to set, with some great earth-shine reflecting back, and the two planets of Mars & Venus close-by.

Another few minutes and I would've missed Venus behind the hill... :-)

'Winter Wonderland' - Llyn Llydaw, Snowdonia

I had great pleasure in taking a Flickr friend and his partner who who are currently over from the USA out for a tour of some of my favourite parts of Snowdonia and Anglesey today. From sunrise and beyond sunset it was non-stop!

We caught sunrise from Llyn Llydaw on our way up Snowdon, and it certainly didnt disappoint any of us, bathing the peak of Snowdon in a bright pink glow.

Great day out, great conditions, just excellent :)

As legend has it, St Gwenfaen from whom the church at Rhoscolyn and medieval well nearby are named after, took refuge on top of this rock stack after fleeing her hermitage from viking raiders.

As the tide came in and threatened to cover her rocky refuge, the angels descended and carried her away.

Superb colours and light across Anglesey and into Snowdonia again this evening, we've been spoilt lately. I only just arrived in time to catch the sun drop below the horizon, but the bright colour lasted more than long enough for me to pick out my shots among the pools and ripples.

'One Night In Snowdonia' - Dyffryn Mymbyr, Snowdonia

Given the clear forecast we had I met up with a good friend to shoot some nightscapes over Llyn Mymbyr which has been lovely and still all day. Taken shortly after twilight fell, the mist was still rising off the lake as the temperatures slowly fell to freezing as the night drew in.

A lovely corner of Snowdonia to admire the night-sky from!

'A Dark Cove' - Porth Twr Mawr, Anglesey

The night sky across the cove at the end of Ynys Llanddwyn with the old lighthouse sitting proudly on the headland whilst the sea swell swept the beach below.

I even got to watch a few very bright lightning strikes immediately below the milky way across the sea, though they were sporadic and I was glad as it would've been a nightmare to capture both together... :-)

I got my shots and got out of there as the storm eventually pulled closer after a few quiet enjoyable hours on the island to myself.

One of my favourite spots, in one of my favourite kinds of conditions with gloomy clouds, moody twilight and a rough sea.

I'd trekked out to the beach at Llanddwyn straight from arriving back on the island from work due to winter hours.

As I don't like face-on portraits of myself, they dont come around often, but as I reach my impending mid-life crisis (I'm 40 at the weekend....) I figured I'd mark the occasion before I left the beach after grabbing some nice seascapes :-)

The first glimpse of sunlight finally broke into the fairy glen this particular morning, despite endless showers since arriving at sunrise, throwing lovely soft light down through the autumn canopy onto its mossy walls.

The rest of the time was spent trying to stay dry from the showers while perched out in the river on impossibly slippy rocks, watching the salmon and dippers go about their business :-)
