Layers of Gold, Dead Horse Point State Park, Utah

I just got back from co-leading a workshop in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks with Arizona Highways legend George Stocking.  We had a great group of enthusiastic folks which made chasing light like this in canyon country all the more rewarding.  Words really can't describe the awe one feels when standing on edge of this canyon.  Hopefully the image relays a bit of its majesty, but it really must be experienced in person.

Looking forward to a  bit of down time (aka catching up on office work) before heading down to SC with my family and then off to the wilds of the Pacific Northwest for another workshop in two weeks.

As always thanks for taking a peek and feel free to share!

"Paine Grande Phoenix," Torres del Paine, Chile

Happy Friday everyone! I got a little lovin' from the light gods of Torres del Paine for this one. I hiked out to a distant location and scouted a sweet comp only to bail once I realized the light wasn't going to materialize in right place. I quickly scurried back to a sheltered lagoon where the reflections would be great and was pleasantly surprised when the sky lit up after the sun dipped below the horizon. It's a good lesson in staying flexible and thoroughly exploring an area before you settle on any one composition.

Have a great weekend and thanks for taking a peek. Feel free to share.

"The Looking Glass," Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina

I haven't been posting here much the past several months, planning to be more regular I promise.

I recently spent 2 weeks co-leading a tour in Patagonia.  After 3 days of getting shut out with wind, clouds and intermittent rain and snow we were finally rewarded with our first glimpse of Fitz Roy. It was fitting and extremely rewarding to get this first look after hiking in the dark to this stunning location. I couldn't have asked for better conditions on this particular morning, fresh snow, calm water and wonderful light.

At one point I stopped shooting to just take it all in. I've been staring at photos of this mountain range since I was a teenager and could hardly believe I was finally there in person, what a great morning!

"Green with Envy," Hoh Rainforest, Olympic National Park

Another from workshop and trip out to the Pacific Northwest this month. I love shooting in the rainforest, especially with a wide angle lens. It begs to get really close and intimate with your subjects. The key is finding a strong, graphic element that makes a great shape to act as the compositional anchor. In this image it's the radiating fronds of the foreground ferns, complimented by the repeating diagonal lines of the vine maple trunks receding into the background.

"Rainforest Menangerie," Hoh Rainforest, Olympic NP, WA

Well, I made back to Vermont late Friday night after a very long day of travel. Spent the weekend getting caught up on sleep and shopping for new bikes for the girls. Looking forward to sharing images from the Olympic National Park workshop.

I should have some dates for next year's workshop in the next couple of weeks so stay tuned if you're interested in visiting this amazing park.

"Land of the Lost," Southern Utah

Before my Arches and Canyonlands workshop began a couple of weeks ago I had the chance to do a little exploring and get away from the crowds of Moab.  I spent a rather hot and dusty afternoon exploring this alien landscape for photographic compositions.  The evening shoot didn't yield much, but after spending the night sacked out under a sky full of stars I awoke to some much welcomed clouds.  I have a couple of images I'm happy with but this is becoming my favorite.

I kept looking over my shoulder anticipating an angry pose of advancing sleestaks coming to capture me.

As always, thanks for taking a peek and feel free to share.

"Candylands," Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Finished up a great workshop in Moab, UT yesterday. We had some crazy weather during the week, everything from sunny skies and temps in the 80s to high winds and below freezing temps. She's a fickle muse that mother nature.

After getting thwarted by a road closure in the La Sals looking for a grove of aspens we made a snowy drive to Denver for a flight out this morning. Unfortunately, our flight was delayed and now we're not getting back to VT until after midnight. Oh well, gives me a little time to process some images from the trip.

This is from the first night in Canyonlands NP while doing some pre-workshop scouting and shooting. We camped about a 100 yards form this stunning overlook and enjoyed an incredibly clear night sky and stunningly quiet evening before turning in for the night.

"Jumpin' Juniper," Castle Valley, Utah

The Arches & Canyonlands Workshop got off to a great start on Sunday evening with a fun shoot out in the Fisher Tower area outside of Moab. We've got a great group with lot's of positivity and enthusiasm, which was a blessing this morning out at Mesa Arch when the tour bus full of peeps showed up just before sunrise...

Big wind coming this afternoon as a cold front moves into the area, hopefully bringing some much needed clouds to our skies. Keeping fingers crossed.

I was particularly drawn to the late evening light illuminating this lone juniper and just the tops of the neighboring rocks, creating some much needed separation from the shadowed background. As always thanks for taking a peek and feel free to share.

The remnants of a late autumn storm front along the shores of Lake Champlain are always fun to shoot, especially if you don't mind getting a little wet

We still have a spot of two left in our Arches & Canyonlands as well as Olympic NP workshops and registration is now open for a newly added weekend workshop this spring here in Vermont.

"The Moments Between," Lake Champlain, Vermont

So this happened the other night on Lake Champlain…

The title has somewhat of a double meaning.  First, it references the little gap in the clouds that allowed the setting sun to momentarily burst onto the scene, bathing it in the most incredible glow and backlighting the breaking waves.

The second, somewhat more abstract meaning refers to the moments between photo excursions, when I'm home in Vermont.  You see I had just returned from back to back workshops and hadn't even done my laundry yet when a quick glimpse at the weather and satellite imagery had me running out the door to one of my favorite spots on Lake Champlain.  This my friends is what being a landscape photographer is all about, being out in the elements photographing as often as you can, regardless of whether you're in some farflung... more »

To all my workshop clients this fall, thank you, you're awesome people!  But, don't put your camera down now that you're home and never stop shooting!  If the only time you ever shoot is on photo tours or workshops then it's unlikely you'll become the photographer you want to become.  This isn't a part time avocation, you gotta be all in!  Now get out there and make some images!!!!!

"Ingraham's Afterglow," Acadia National Park, Maine

I just returned from co-leading my annual Acadia National Park Autumn Workshop with +Joseph Rossbach.  We had a fantastic group this year with some really good conditions and pretty autumn foliage.  This is from the night before the workshop started while scouting along the coast.  The sky went off to the west but unfortunately it didn't line up with my comp until the afterglow started.  As is often the case, landscape photography is a series of tradeoffs and decisions about the lesser of two or more evils in the scene.  Honestly, I was bit disappointed with this evening's shoot.  However, after some time I've come to really appreciate this image.  Maybe I'm just too picky…

Golden Glen, Stowe, Vermont

The color in Vermont has been really good this year, although well past peak in my area.  I like to shoot along the streams and waterfalls after the upper canopy has peaked and the leaves start to drop providing a nice dose of color to the banks and understory.

Leaving for Acadia NP tomorrow, looking forward to some salt air and Maine shrimp, oh and some good fall photography of course :)

The foliage last week was off the cuff around here and now we're on our way to stick season.  Will no doubt be sharing more from Vermont in the coming days and weeks but now getting prepped and excited to head over to the Maine Coast at the end of the week for this year's Acadia NP Workshop.  Looking forward to working the coast as well as some of Mt Desert's finest fall colors!

Just wrapped up the annual Autumn in Vermont Workshop on Thursday. This was the first year we teamed up with +Joseph Rossbach  and to say we had a lot of laughs would be an understatement. The color was peeking just about everywhere we shot, the weather was mostly cooperative and the group was superb. It never ceases to amaze me what truly fine people attend photography workshops, at least mine  I'm truly blessed to get to work with such amazing people and this year's group was no exception. Their hard work and relentless enthusiasm made the workshop a great success. Thanks everyone!

We should have dates for next year's extravaganza in the coming weeks. So, if you've ever wanted to experience the best foliage in the world this workshop is for you!

Last Chance, Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, WA

Been taking some time off from the internet (specifically social media) this summer and have to say it's been refreshing.  Here's one I never shared from last May's Olympic National Park Workshop.  I just listed the dates for next year's workshop, May 10-14.

This is a small group (8 max) workshop to one of the nation's most majestic national parks and ensures you'll have an intimate shooting experience.  We'll shoot the temperate rainforest as it bursts with spring green and spend evenings prowling the majestic sea stacks along this magical coast.

Here's the link to full listing with all the details.  http://greenmtnphotoworkshops.com/?workshops=olympic-national-park-photo-workshop

Picking through some images from my recent travels to the Pacific Northwest and catching up on office work this week.  Here's one from the famed Ruby Beach area.  The key to images like this is being patient and waiting for the right wave action.  I also find that using a cable release rather than your self timer is critical for timing the point of shutter release.  It's virtually impossible to anticipate the waves 2-10 seconds before the decisive moment.  The other key is shooting a lot of frames.   In fact, I often use the continuous shooting mode and shoot right through a wave set, starting with an advancing wave and continuing through it's recession.  In this case I new the receding wave would yield the look I was after and with an outgoing tide it was only the larger waves that pushed water allthe wa... more »

Green Spaghetti, Sol Duc Rainforest, Olympic National Park

Slowly starting to crawl out from my cave after getting really sick upon return from the PNW last week.  We had a great group for the Olympic National Park workshop this year and I was able to get a little personal shooting in after we wrapped things up last weekend.  One of the clients so aptly described the rainforest as Green Spaghetti, hence my title here.

I've got more images to sift through and process but will share more as I progress.  As always thanks for taking a peek and feel free to share.

Saguaro Glow, Organ Pipe National Monument, Arizona

Here's another shot from my recent travels to the Sonoran Desert of Arizona.  I fell in love with the interplay of backlight and the various cactus species in the Sonoran Desert.  In fact, it quickly became my preferred light for working in this rather chaotic environment.  I know this won't be for everyone due to the lack of dramatic light and sky but it's quickly becoming one of my favorites from the trip as it represents the quieter, more contemplative style of shooting that first got me excited about photography.

26, Sonoran Desert, Arizona

Just returned from a great trip to the Arizona Desert.  Got a little personal shooting in on either side of a workshop I co-lead with fellow Dreamscapes and Arizona Highways legend, George Stocking.  The wildflowers were pretty much nonexistent this spring but we had some good shooting and fantastic workshop clients.  Looking forward to my trip to Moab next week.

The title represents the number of cholla spines I had to  pluck from my calf after shooting this image.  They don't call them jumping cactus for nothing!

Pura Vida, Playa Pelada, Costa Rica

Spent a wonderful week hanging on Pacific side of Costa Rica with my family recently.  This is from one  of the only nights we had any clouds at sunset.  It's a far cry from the below zero temps and blizzard conditions the past 24 hours here in northern Vermont.  Off tomorrow for 10 days in the desert southwest with some personal shooting as well as a workshop I'm co-leading with George Stocking.  We still have some space in next month's Arches & Canyonlands workshop if anyone is interested in joining us in Utah.  Hit the link for details.

Peace out y'all!

2013 was a great year and I'm looking forward to an amazing 2014! Ansel Adams famously said "12 significant photographs in any one year was a good crop." In the spirit of self reflection I've chosen my "bakers dozen" for the year in review. Would love to hear what you think and feel free to share.

Taken on a particularly stormy day this past summer while photographing puffins on the cliffs of Dyrholaey Iceland.  Quite an experience being exposed on the edge of this promontory as storms rolled in off the ocean.

Big storm coming to the northeast this weekend, hang on to your hat and stay warm out there folks!

We are nearing the winter solstice and as is usually the case November, and thus far December have been pretty gloomy here in the northeastern US.  You know it must be pretty dank if you find yourself dreamy of the sunny weather in Iceland…

Here's another from my trip last August, where we did in fact have a couple of sunny hours sprinkled in here and there.  Maybe one day we'll see some sun again.

Cobble, Cobble

Sorry for the poor humor but that's how I roll ;)  While I don't have any images of turkeys in my archive I'm pretty sure I had a turkey sandwich for lunch on the day I shot this image on Hunter's Cove Beach in Acadia NP.  If not, I certainly would have eaten one if I had it with me, I'm usually pretty hungry when shooting sunset.

There's a lot to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving Day 2013.  I'm truly blessed with great family and friends, good health and and the ability to pursue a life and living behind the lens.  Here's wishing everyone a happy and relaxing Thanksgiving!

Acadia Glow, Acadia National Park, Maine

What can I say, I love that glowing reflected light that bounces back into the scene from a colorful sky.  For whatever reason I seem to experience this phenomenon at least once every time I visit Acadia National Park in the fall.  There tend to be a lot of weather fronts moving through at this time of year and if you can time it right, usually when one is approaching from the west, the sunrises can be spectacular.

Still finding images from this summer's trip to Iceland to process.  This particular beach, and especially this particular evening was very productive for me.  It was by far the best light we had during the trip and I think I walked away with at least 5 or 6 images I'm really happy with.  As always thanks for taking a peek.

Icy Abyss, Bruarfoss, Iceland

Logging some office hours now that stick season is in full swing here in Vermont.  Of course I still find plenty of distractions from getting any meaningful work accomplished :)  There are still some Iceland images kicking around on the hard drive that have gone unprocessed, wouldn't want them to feel lonely.

As amazing as this waterfall is, it's so hard to come up with something remotely original.  The scenery around it is a bit lackluster (hard to imagine I know) and unless there is an epic sky happening the wide angle perspectives don't do much for me.  So, I spent sometime wandering around the rim of the chasm working comps and trying not to fall in.

As always thanks for taking a peek.

Forest Kaleidoscope, Groton SF, Vermont

Finally coming up for air after a very busy autumn season here in the northeast.  For as much time as I spent in the field this autumn I have surprisingly few images to show for it.  Here's one from late September here in northern Vermont.  I often prefer the "pre-peak" color look because of the way the vibrant reds contrast with the green.  The red maples around here almost always peak well before the sugar maples and especially the beeches do.  It's unlikely you'll come across scenes with lots of reds and no green.  Once the reds are gone the predominant color scheme shifts more toward a yellow and orange.

Fallen, Acadia National Park, Maine

Just wrapped up a great week teaching in Acadia National Park.  I feel blessed to have had a chance to meet and work with some truly fine people this week.  The park closure (early in the week) weather and light were a bit challenging at times but the energy and enthusiasm of the group more than made up for it.  We had the added bonus of hooking up with David Middleton's workshop group last night for an impromptu pizza party and slideshow session.  Great people all around and as is usually the case I'm leaving more inspired than ever to pursue my craft.

Here's one from a few days ago, perhaps my favorite of the trip.  I often find these intimate scenes more fulfilling than the big, in your face shots at sunrise and sunset.

Red Light, Bass Harbor Light, Acadia National Park, Maine

Well the park opened just in time for our Wild Acadia Workshop to start the other day.  The fog moved in last night and thwarted our hopes of a dramatic sunset but then this happened as twilight advanced.  Arrive early and stay late, but most importantly ARRIVE!  Go out regardless cause you just never know.

Swift River Autumn, White Mtn National Forest, NH

Here's one from this past weekend over on the Swift River, arguably one of the prettiest rivers in New England.  I have to say I've never seen it this low.  This vantage point would be almost impossible during normal flows.

Getting prepped to head Acadia NP this weekend for 7 days of workshop fun.  Keeping fingers crossed for a deal that would re-open the gov't and our beloved National Parks.

Morning Glow, Groton SF, Vermont

"Sometimes the light's all shining on me..."

Here's another from the 2013 Autumn in Vermont workshop last week.  Big wind and rain yesterday pretty obliterated the remaining foliage.  My advice is to head for the valleys and streams, or perhaps the coast.  Registration is already open for next year's program, get a spot now because this workshop fills every year!

As always thanks for taking a peek.

Coliseum Vortex, White Mtns, New Hampshire

Spent the day yesterday prowling around the Swift River and Crawford Notch in the Whites.  I have to say the color was very disappointing and waaaay past peak.  When the color is no long on the trees you have to look for it on the ground or in this case, in the water.  The understory is starting to brighten up and we're getting some much needed rain this afternoon and evening so think intimate woodlands and streams during the early part of this week.  Happy shooting everyone cause stick season is right around the corner in the north country.

As always thanks for taking a peek.

Birch Cage, Groton SF, Vermont

Just wrapped up my annual Autumn in Vermont Workshop this morning.  I couldn't have asked for a better group to prowl around Vermont with for the past 5 days.  They were enthusiastic, creative and all around cool folks, oh and the foliage wasn't half bad either ;).  There's still plenty of color out there but things will be peaking quickly, higher elevations are already past in many places.  Not to fear as the understory with be coloring up nicely in the coming days and with some rain in forecast the streams should start to look good again.

Registration is already open for next year's program so get a spot while they last!  http://greenmtnphotoworkshops.com/?workshops=autumn-in-vermont-photography-workshop-2014

Here's one from late last week and as always thanks for taking a peek.

Crystalline Twilight, Jokusarlon, Iceland

Yep, still editing the Iceland images.  I love this beach and on a couple of occasions it gave up some great conditions.  Foliage is starting to pop in my part of the world and I'm off into the field to lead a few workshops in the coming days and weeks so this will have to tide you over for a little while.  I'll try to keep some images coming, more than likely of the advancing fall color.  Hope everyone is out making images!

As always thanks for taking a peek and to all the new followers, welcome!
