Landscape Photography Show13,673*LPS Event #50: The Perfect Horizon* This event will focus on a landscape photograph with "The Perfect Horizon".  It will also review our lessons from the Horizontal Rule of Thirds.  What makes a perfect horizon? 1) *Level* - The horizon MUST be level to the eye especially if it's water.  Landscapes with mountains and jagged horizons seem natural to our eye and we don't worry about it being level.  If the landscape is all land and there is a gentle slope to the horizon, then you are really challenged as to how do you make the viewer's eye sense that you got it right.  The easiest way to to incorporate a vertical element such as a tree along one of the vertical rules of third lines.  We know the tree is straight so the viewer's eye will think that you got it right. It's always great to get the horizon level in the camera but if you didn't, most post processing software has the ability to straighten the horizon for you.  Make use of these wonderful tools. 2) Place the horizon on the upper or lower horizontal rule of thirds lines.  This means that you have 1/3 sky and 2/3 land or 2/3 sky and 1/3 land. This tends to give us a more interesting photograph.  A horizon split right down the middle is often boring. 3) Know when to break the rules.  For example, a landscape with awesome reflections might look great if split down the middle. *Special Rules* 1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a scene where you have used "The Perfect Horizon". 2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Where is this place located?  What were you trying to achieve?  What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?   We want to know the details about your photograph. THE COMMENT IS REQUIRED. 3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don't have complete EXIF data will be removed.  Others will learn from seeing what you have done. 3) Only ONE photograph per person is allowed.  If you submit more than one photo, all of your photos will be removed. 4) Circle the @114888971165518552849 page. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, September 7, 2015, 10 am CDT.  Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510 theme page.  Circle the curators and engage them in conversation.  You will learn lots LPS Event #50: The Perfect Horizon2015-08-31 17:00:00438

Landscape Photography Show13,673*Landscape Photography Show #47: Negative Space* Our last event featured "Fill the Frame".  This event will feature the opposite of that, "Negative Space".  Negative Space is the space surrounding an object or between objects.  In Landscape Photography, it is the space surrounding your primary element.  For example, you might have a single delicate flower along the left (or right) vertical line of the rule of thirds, and no other object in the frame.  The Negative Space is filled with complementary or background colors.    One way to achieve this is to get the primary object in focus and  use a very low number for your aperture.  The background will be blurred with lovely colors that accent your primary element.  Negative Space can be a VERY powerful composition technique.  However, it's difficult to accomplish.  Let's see how great you do.  Our best examples will receive our #GreatNegativeSpace  award!!! *Special Rules* 1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a scene where you have used "Negative Space". 2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Where is this place located?  What were you trying to achieve?  What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?   We want to know the details about your photograph. Landscape Photography Show13,673*Landscape Photography Show #47: Fill the Frame* "Fill the Frame" is often the first advice given to a beginning photographer.  That's what we will focus on in this event.  For landscape photographs, that can be done in one of two ways.  1. Do it with through the viewfinder.  Move yourself to the proper location and angle or zoom in/out if your camera does this until you get a pleasing image that "fills the frame".  You don't want any extra space or elements that will distract from your composition.   2. Crop your photo to eliminate that meaningless extra space that doesn't contribute to your composition and eliminate distracting elements. *Special Rules* 1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a scene where you have "Filled the Frame". 2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Landscape Photography Show13,673*Landscape Photography Show #46: Power Points* In the last two events, we explored the horizontal and vertical rule of thirds lines and how they divide your frame into 9 equal parts.  It's always great to set a horizon on the lower or upper horizontal line.  It's also good to place a strong element along one of the vertical rule of thirds lines. This event will focus on where the two vertical and horizontal rule of thirds lines intersect.  We call those Power Points.  There are 4 of them: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. Placing a strong element at one of the Power Points can really improve the composition, drama, and power of your photograph.  Examples:  the single red leaf on a green tree; the eye of anything wildlife, and the setting sun on the horizon.    Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Power Points are what we want practice with this event.  Show us something special place at one of the intersection points of those vertical and horizontal lines.   1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays something special at one of the Power Points.       2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us which Power Point you used: upper left, upper right, lower left, or lower right.  Explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Power Point rules, tell us why.  Also give us some information about the location and any challenges that you faced.  We want to know the details about your photograph. 3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.    General Rules: 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, July 13, 2015, 10 am CDT.  Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510 theme page.  Circle the curators and engage them in conversation.  You will learn lots from them!! 7) CuratLPS Event #46: Power Points2015-07-06 17:00:00344

Landscape Photography Show13,673*Landscape Photography Show #45: Vertical Rule of Thirds* In the last event, we explored how to set a horizon using the horizontal rule of thirds.  We're continuing with this strong rule of composition by looking at the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  This event will be starting later today so you have a chance to carefully read all the rules. Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Remember in the last event that you imagined two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divided the space into three equal spaces.  Now, also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later.  For now, we will focus on the vertical lines.  Does your landscape have a strong vertical element that you want to capture?  Let's say it's a single tree.  We often like to put that tree smack dab in the center of the photo.  We may capture the tree but the photograph is boring.  Try putting that tree along one of the vertical lines separating the space into thirds.  Now the photograph has some drama and added interest.   That's what we want practice with this event.  Use one of your vertical lines to capture a strong vertical element.  Don't forget the Horizontal Rule of Thirds and Horizon that we had in the last event.  We want both rules of composition used in this event!! Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.    *1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a strong vertical element using the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  Keep in mind the horizon from the last event.*   *2.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Vertical Rules of Thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.*   *3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.* *4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.*    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. 3) OnlyLPS Event #45: Vertical Rule Of Thirds2015-06-22 19:00:00408

Landscape Photography Show13,673*Landscape Photography Show #44: Horizon - Rules-of-Thirds* Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Imagine two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divides the space into three equal spaces.  Also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later and also the vertical lines.  This event will focus on those horizontal lines. Study your landscape BEFORE you shoot.  In the viewfinder, place the horizon on one of those horizontal rule-of-thirds lines.  You will have 1/3 sky and 2/3 ground or 2/3 sky and 1/3 ground.  That composition is very pleasing to the viewer.  Having your horizon dead center is often boring and not interesting.   Horizons should be level!!  If you have sky and water, then having the horizon level is a MUST!!   If you have sky and ground, the "level" becomes more complicated.  If your horizon is very curvy with rolling hills for example, you won't have a level horizon and that's OK.  Your mind's eye knows that hills aren't level.  If your horizon is the boundary between sky and land and only a slight hill, you're mind's eye won't find it appealing when looking at the photograph of that view because the horizon isn't level.   You can trick your mind's eye by adding a vertical element to the composition that the viewer will "know" is vertical such as a tree.  You might put that vertical tree on one of those vertical rule-of-thirds lines.  Your mind knows that the tree is vertical and won't mind an unlevel horizon. Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.  You might try getting added drama with 10-20% sky and 80-90% ground or vice versa.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a horizon using the horizontal rule-of-thirds.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the horizontal rule-of-thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.  Feel free to leave comments and discuss on the main event as well. *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) *You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don'tLPS Event #44: Horizon - Rule of Thirds2015-06-08 17:00:00568

Dear Creative Friends!!

I've been trying to figure out a way to continue doing photo contests with the new UI and without using events. I considered shared albums from Google Photos. After several days of investigation, experimentation, and far too much thought, I've decided that isn't the way to go. It's doable!! However, it's really clutzy and far too much work for me. The deciding factor is that the shared album would be wide open to anyone anywhere and I don't think all of our participants would understand the ramifications of that and I don't want to put their privacy at risk. Therefore, it's a NO on Google Photos.

Now the problem and the brainstorming: I want to do photography contests. I specify a theme and people participate by adding a photo to the contest. They are either challenge contests or learning contests. As... more »

They are either challenge contests or learning contests. As far as infrastructure is concerned, I have 2 pages, 1 community, and all the functionality in the new G+ UI. How can I do it? I'm open to all thoughts and suggestions except the one I've already ruled out. If you have ideas, I'd love to hear them!! Thanks very much!!

Just a few hours remain to vote for your favorites in the "Weather" event. Vote by Monday, June 6, 2016, noon CDT.
+Margaret Tompkins

It's time to vote for your favorite photographs from the Weather event. To view all the photographs, select "View photos". On the next page, select "All photos". That's important because "highlights" is the default". When the page loads, select the first one and view it large. Use your right arrow key to scroll through all the photos. You can pick up to five as your favorites. For each of those, add a positive comment and the hashtag #LPCFavorite  . You must have both the comment AND the hashtag for your vote to count. Cast your votes by Monday, June 6, 2016, noon CDT. Those with lots of votes will be featured on the +Landscape Photography page and honored there. You don't have to have an entry in order to vote!! Good luck everyone!!

We're looking for several volunteers who would enjoy moderating the events in the +Landscape Photography Community !!  If you're interested, leave a comment here and tell us why you would like to help moderate the events.  For more details, keep reading.

What Does A Moderator Do?
A moderator makes positive encouraging comments on the entries in the events.  We generally have between 300 and 500 entries.  The moderators also help enforce the rules such as checking for exif data.

It does take some extra time.  Every other Monday at 3 pm CDT when a new event starts, it's very active the first several days.  It's less active later in the week.  You don't have to be a professional photographer.  It helps if you enjoy photography and are familiar with the basics.  Many people posting to the events are beginners and a moderator is there to help them.

I Would Like To Do Even More!!  What Opportunities Are Available?
You may also want to consider these opportunities:
~~ Moderate events for the +Landscape Photography Show
~~ Moderate categories in the Landscape Photography Community
~~ Be a curator for the +Landscape Photography theme

Feel free to ask questions about the process.  We do have written guidelines to help get you started and private communities just for the curators.  These themes and community are among the largest and most popular on G+.  They are known for caring and dedicated curators and moderators, original photography, and a learning environment.  We would be pleased to have you join the greatest team on G+!!

Dear Friends,  I need your advice.  You haven't let me down in the past so I'm hoping you can help me now!

Tomorrow, in the +Landscape Photography Community , we will start our next great learning event.  What are your thoughts about having a "people's choice" award?  You are making great comments on other people's photos and I'd like to encourage that even more!!

You could pick 5 of your absolute favorites and leave a comment on each one telling the poster what you like about the photo and tagging it with #LPCFavorite  !!  Those that receive lots of #LPCFavorite  votes would be shared to the +Landscape Photography theme.   It would certainly give more exposure to the great photos that have been shared.  What are your thoughts?

Landscape Photography Show #45: Vertical Rule of Thirds

In the last event, we explored how to set a horizon using the horizontal rule of thirds.

In the last event, we explored how to set a horizon using the horizontal rule of thirds.

1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a strong vertical element using the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  Keep in mind the horizon from the last event.
2.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Vertical Rules of Thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.
3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.
4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.

General Rules:
1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.

Landscape Photography Show #44: Horizon - Rules-of-Thirds

Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules.
