I can imagine careers cropping up from this.

Dedicated open source improvement specialists. Installation companies. Electronic landscapers. Local food restaurants with twenty or more beds out back. Highly specialized crops. Apartment complex amenities. Dedicated government programs to install and maintain these in impoverished areas.

Lots of room for improvement. New versions that handle new types of crops, far more versatile components that allow pest control, pruning, and harvesting.

Think of this as a true game changer. This is going to change the look of the land.

I don't think it will replace big agro. There will still be vast croplands to feed the wold it's staples. But it will strike one hell of a blow against poverty and world hunger.

I suspect we will see a lot more of this, as the processes involved get cheaper and better. Solar power is almost there, mix it with wind and water, and it's here now. cleaner water using some of the awesome desalination techniques, and any coastal area will have all the water it needs.

I'd love to live in such a place, I'm as close as I can get now.

I've been following this since it first was announced. looks like they will be shipping developer packages soon.

A phone with modules that pop in and out, so once you buy it, you can upgrade it a bit at a time. the idea is it's designed to last for many years, with thousands of modules made by third parties.

Me, I don't want the form factor to be a phone. I want a full qwerty keyboard with room for twenty to thirty modules.

I watched a video a few months ago about these things. pretty impressive, I think they need a machine to read the RFID tags though, something small, mounted on the ceiling would probably be enough for each room.

I can see using these things for all sorts of stuff.

BEST STATEMENT I'VE HEARD IN YEARS.

Look, if you can, in a state of nature, without any education whatsoever invent geometry and astronomy, you are allowed to criticise people who lived 3000 years ago and built whole advanced civilizations on poetic knowledge (along with, you know, the geometry and astronomy they were inventing at the time).

But if your knowledge of these things is in any way derived from the knowledge carefully drawn from the blood, toil, and sweat of the ages, sit down and shut up. You are a dwarf standing on the shoulders of giants.___BEST STATEMENT I'VE HEARD IN YEARS.

step one: acquire CO2 gas (usually made from fermentation, or as a byproduct of burning carbon, then pressurized)

step two: get a hot source of molten salt (solar concentration towers do this well)

step three: use a process like water exchanging heat from the salt to turn to steam and spin a turbine to pressurize the CO2 gas into dry ice with a small amount of the power it's using to feed a small town.

step four: when the solar tower isn't in sunlight, use the hot salt to turn the co back into gas to spin that turbine. don't let the gas back out, save it so it can turn back into dry ice again.

step five: use this brand new turbine that is MUCH smaller than normal, making it far cheaper and easier to operate, yet can still power a small town just fine.

step six: give it a projected cost of two fifths of what a natural gas plant costs to make... more »
