Lauren Weinstein380,001*Hangout On Air: Discussing Congress Without Obscenities* - As of 1 PM PDT, the U.S. Senate leadership has supposedly reached a very short term deal to end the federal government shutdown and temporarily raise the debt ceiling. The fate of this package in the House is still decidedly unclear. Regardless of what Congress does right now, we're going to be in the same mess again likely in a matter of weeks or months. Let's _Discuss Congress Without Obscenities_ this evening. What's _really_ going on?  Is the GOP still even really a _political party_ any more? If not, _what are they?_  And _can we even discuss this without the constant use of invectives?_  Let's at least try. This HOA is currently scheduled for 7:30 PM PDT this evening. It is subject to change or cancellation as events warrant.  Thanks!Hangout On Air: Discussing Congress Without Obscenities2013-10-17 04:30:0012

I don't just want a "home assistant" device I can talk to that can speak back, I want one that can project an image (doesn't have to be super high quality) onto the wall or ceiling as well, at least until we can do mid-air holography. Doing the projected images (non-holographic!) is now practical, and relatively inexpensive if high resolution and high brightness aren't required.

Here's the bottom line on dealing with cops when you're stopped for any reason or for no reason. Do exactly what they tell you to do. Even if what they're telling you to do is wrong, or illegal, or stupid, or immoral. Follow their instructions explicitly. Do not argue with them, do not try to convince them, do not improvise, do not make seemingly minor deviations. Just slavishly do what they say. You may still get hurt or killed, but you vastly improve your odds of surviving and having the opportunity to make your case to authorities and the public later. If you're killed, your opportunities to be heard will be greatly reduced, to say the least.

These are the notorious Chinese Internet "Addiction" treatment centers. The incident has sparked outrage online about China's youth treatment centres, and debate about how parents should raise their children. The Paper said it had interviewed several former students at the college who alleged abuse. Many said they were beaten for not following orders, with one saying they were beaten "black and blue" for being found with a cigarette.
Others said they were sometimes forbidden to sleep, and forced to stand until the early hours of the morning. One student said her parents paid 30,000 RMB to enroll her for a year and she lived "a life without dignity". Several news outlets have since sought to enter the school or seek interviews, but have been refused, state run newspaper People's Daily reported.

I realize that a Silicon Valley mantra is "Don't ask permission, ask foregiveness" -- but seriously, these outcomes were obvious given the way the project launched. // New York City’s experiment to let people browse the internet from public terminals on city streets has ended, at least for now. On Wednesday, the operator of the terminals said it was removing their web browsing capabilities, saying people were monopolizing the kiosks and using them to look at content that wasn’t appropriate for public viewing. The setback speaks to how difficult it is to create a new form of privately run digital infrastructure in the country’s biggest city. The project, known as LinkNYC, began four years ago when the city government asked for proposals to re-imagine its pay phones. Demand had dropped, and many of the phones had been removed. The remaining structures served largely as places for people to enjoy a toke or urinate with semi-discretion. The phone booths still had their virtues. Occasionally, for instance, they served as pop-up book exchanges. More to the point, they provided almost $20 million in annual revenue to the city, mostly through display advertising. Officials wanted to replace them with something that would provide a more relevant service and a steady flow of cash. After an open competition, the city signed a long-term deal with CityBridge, a consortium of companies led by Sidewalk Labs, a startup owned by Alphabet Inc. and run by Dan Doctoroff, the former chief executive officer of Bloomberg LP.___
