Raymond Duke2,369I only use one circle for people I add on G+. This is it. Unfortunately, due to G+'s shortcomings, only 500 people are allowed. Maybe one day they will open it up to more, like Twitter did recently with shared lists. Why do I use just one circle?Because I treat everyone the same. If you are on the internet, it doesn't matter what you do. We are all equal on the web. Our conversations and interactions will determine the context of our relationship, not how I categorize you. 2013-06-20 16:03:47500315

Max Huijgen41,136Europe calling: the old giant wakes up and calls on its peeps! A new circle of Europeans as I promised long ago to connect the people who responded and share them. See for the first shared circle this post https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/PDUi13o9dB1The original post was shared 225 times. You can find it here:https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/CdhmHGbYjgiPart 2 is still open and can be found here:https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/NDAhG4fP2a7If you didn´t do so already, post there and as long as I have spots free, I will circle you as I want to see my streams come alive during European hours. There was a shared feeling that it would be great to get some attention from G+ for Europe with official hangouts from the community managers during European times, feature roll-outs from Google no longer restricted to the US, having some central point to share European circles and last but not least the desire to have hangouts without having to burn the midnight oil. To help solve this and get Europeans together on the same page I created +Europeans on G+  It already has multiple managers out of the community and that initiative recently span off +European Photo  but feel to offer a bit of your time for this community project. Circle the page if you didn´t already do so. We need more peeps from all over Europe to participate and enjoy G+I hope these posts can do the rounds through Europe and gets us firmly on the G+ map. So even if you´re not European yourself, but sympathize with the initiatives to form a community here, help spread the word and share it.And don´t forget: we all love the other continents and most of us have circles which encompass the whole world. So it´s not against others, but pro us :)2013-03-15 15:05:14291532076

Max Huijgen24,852Europe calling: the old giant wakes up and calls on its peeps! Part IIAccording to the latest figures 426.9 million Europeans now use the InternetThere is a is feeling that it would be great to get some attention from G+ for Europe with official hangouts from the community managers during European times, feature roll-outs from Google no longer restricted to the US, and last but not least the desire to have hangouts and interaction without having to burn the midnight oil. To help solve this and get Europeans together on the same page I created +Europeans on G+  It already has four managers out of the community but feel to offer a bit of your time if you want to contribute. Circle the page if you didn´t already do so. I also organized a "I will circle you" project. If people commented that they came from Europe I would circle them instead of the other way. The intention was to share this circle back to the community and the first circle of 500 went out. You can find them here https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/PDUi13o9dB1Now as promised it´s time for round 2: 300 people and a few European pages. Some very well known, some relatively unknown, but all certified active posters from Europe who will spice up your streams during European hours.Check them out and please share the circle as the intention is to get much more Europeans united!if you were left out while you signed up: my excuses as it´s a tedious job to manage all these circles. I will remove you from this and any future shared circle I create, but I will keep you in my G+ circles.Furthermore, with each version I try to include new active engagers that are looking to meet other GPlussers to interact with, but I understand the old users may not have as much interest to meet new users and won’t circle them back, so I will prefer including users that really want to interact with new users. For TIPS TO GET PEOPLE TO CIRCLE YOU you may want to check:https://plus.google.com/u/0/111635150542674847021/posts/Q6c3ikBhdT3Thank you for your help making Google Plus adventure and exhilarating one…#SharedCirecles #CircleShare #ActiveUsers #Engagers #Commenters #TopCircles PS: I don’t necessarily share or identify with the views of these GPlussers, in fact with some of them we have completely antagonistic points of view and dissimilar interests…2012-04-21 17:40:39270336

TOWN BUILT UNDER OVERHANGING CLIFFS

The 3,000-odd inhabitants of Setenil de las Bodegas in Spain seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place.  The natural caves at Setenil proved perfect living quarters, it is believed since pre-historic times. Instead of having to build a whole house and insulating it against heat in the summer and cold in the winter, many rock caves just needed a façade and, voila, there was a house in tune with nature!

Touring Posts On       #womoco

Here are some of the great Touring Section (http://goo.gl/uzgmi3) posts over on the World Motorcycle Community.

Every couple of years a group of my closest friends and I plan a trip to either Pittsburgh or Cleveland to check out the latest Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tour.  I have been great friends with these three guys for almost 30 years, from the school days of our youth through vast distances as we have gotten older.  Petty concerts have been a ritual of ours for the past 20 years and are a great excuse for us to get together.  Gabe actually caught the last Petty show with us in Pittsburgh.  He was on a solo ride over to Hershey, PA, meeting his son to catch a Rush concert.   He decided to meet us on his way back to Columbus to catch the show and a few beers.  Pretty good trip for him I would say.

This past September we changed up the location and decided that we would take in the Heartbreakers in Nashville.  Usually these concerts give us time to catch up, do a little tailgating, check out the show, a little more tailgating, then breakfast in the morning before parting ways.  With a change in venue, we decided to make it into a mini-vacation, spending three days in Nashville to do some sightseeing along with catching a bunch of great local bands down on Broadway.  Tony and Joe would fly in from Pittsburgh by way of Youngstown on Sunday, Jeff would fly in from Boston on Monday, and I seized the opportunity to ride the bike down.  I decided I would leave on Saturday, ride through Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky, and arrive in Nashville early Sunday evening.  Gabe had a prior engagement but was able to ride with me until Sunday afternoon before aiming back north.  This would be the second of three long rides for me in September of 2014.  It took some schmoozing to get my wife to sign off on three big trips but they just kind of fell into place that way (she is probably the best wife in the world).

I have to say that I enjoyed a majority of the ride but this was one of those trips where little things go wrong causing frustration.  I bought a new WiFi remote for the camera but it was plagued with technical difficulties.  Since this trip was only a couple weeks after our trip over to Maryland, I didn’t spend as much time on the maps/GPS.  We had a couple roads to nowhere were I couldn’t connect the routes so we actually skipped a section shortly after getting into Kentucky.  The road signs in Kentucky seemed to be very conservative when it came to the speed signs in the bends.  When we ride in West Virginia, if you come up to a twisty and it recommends you slow to 25 MPH, you better ease off the throttle and grab a little brake prior to punching though or you may find yourself out in the woods.  I guess each state is different and it takes experience riding in different areas to fully enjoy the ride.  I had a little bike trouble at one point too (more on that later).  Don’t get me wrong, any day on two wheels is a great day, but I guess we all have a ride that doesn’t go the way you pictured.  Overall, it was a great journey though.

It was dark outside with a bit of a chill in the air when I jumped in the cockpit.  I met Gabe at the same gas station on US-23 just south of Columbus where we rendezvoused for our ride the previous year to the Tail of the Dragon.  After a couple uneventful hours, we crossed the Carl D. Perkins Bridge over the Ohio River near Portsmouth.  We took a quick break shortly after entering Kentucky to hit up a urination station and to peel a layer before dipping south towards Morehead.  Our first jaunt in to the dirt ended up being a no-go.  There was a steep muddy hill that we decided was a little too much for us, especially with our Anakee 3’s and no crash bars or skid plates.  I vow to go back and conquer that road once my bike is farkled up.  My lack of preparedness on the maps meant that we took a less exciting route to get to our lunch break in Morehead.

After our pit stops at Subway and BP we headed south past Cave Run Lake and into Daniel Boone.  Our next expedition off the tarmac was also doomed.  We started heading towards Simpkins Hollow following Clifton Creek.  The pavement deteriorated the further we went until there was only dirt and gravel under the rubber, normally a great sign.  As we continued, the road ran down into Clifton Creek.  After a little recon, I found the road picked back up a few hundred yards downstream.  After talking to the angel on my shoulder for the second time on the trip (Gabe is my voice of reason when I am ready to push things too far), we decided that we wouldn’t risk the trek due to a ‘waterfall’.  I use the word waterfall lightly.  It was actually about a 6-8 inch rise but tall enough for us to be concerned about busting our oil filters without a skid plate.  That would end the trip pretty quickly.  Again, I will go back there eventually and take on that road after I pimp out my ride this spring.

We ended up riding some great twisty pavers for a while with the beautiful scenery of Boone as our backdrop.  Stopping to take a break next to a Daniel Boone National Forest sign, we made a new friend.  A guy on a cruiser pulled up next to us to shoot the breeze.  He was from Kentucky out on a solo voyage and just wanted stop and talk to some fellow riders.  Our new riding buddy decided he would tag along with us for a while since we were heading in the same general direction.  Continuing south the landscape of Boone became more picturesque as we entered the Red River Gorge Geologic Area, displaying tall rock formations with sheer walls and delightfully twisty roads following little creeks.

Eventually we ran into Nada Tunnel on KY-77, often called the gateway to Red River Gorge.  This 900 foot tunnel, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was originally used by narrow gauge railroad engines to haul timber out of the area to the Clay City sawmill.  The solid limestone was blasted out with dynamite by the Dana Lumber Company between 1910 and 1911.  During the winter, one of the tunnel workers was accidentally killed when he placed his frozen dynamite a little too close to a fire to thaw out, obviously not a smart move.  The tunnel’s original dimensions were 12 feet by 12 feet until one of their trains wedged against the roof and they had to blast another foot higher.  Once the loggers cleared out of the area the railroad tracks were removed and the tunnel was used by horse and pedestrian traffic.  Today the unlit tunnel is paved to allow motorized traffic, but only one direction at a time.

Shortly after leaving the Red River Gorge area our new riding buddy peeled off and we went our separate ways, his cruiser pointed west and us throttling south.  We enjoyed leaning the bikes through some great sweepers as we headed down KY-11.  Eventually we turned off the main street and headed down some side roads to aim the bikes towards Townsend Fork.  Once again the pavement seemed to disintegrate below our tires as we pushed further and further into the woodlands of Boone.  Despite my lack of full attention to the maps on this ride, this was the area that I researched the most.  These dirt/gravel roads would lead us past ponds, follow along multiple creeks, and had the potential for a more off-road experience.  As soon as we got off pavement we passed up a guy on a 4-wheeler, a good sign of the latter.

Since this route was on National Forest roads the dirt and gravel tracks were fairly well maintained, with thick fresh gravel laid down in many places.  There were a lot of good looking trails heading up the hills from the road.  With the right tires and bike protection I will definitely be back to explore the area more.  There was also a good amount of sand on the thoroughfare, particularly where the trails merged with the road.

Once we started heading past the dam at Townsend Fork the gravel started to get thicker and there was a fairly sharp bend to the left and down a steep but short hill.  I quickly checked the GPS to ensure we were going the right way.  I stayed away from the plastic pipe that was running alongside the road and crossing into the intersection before going underground.  I noticed a large stick lying in my path and in a split second, the bike was on the ground and I was standing several feet away.  The episode occurred so fast that my brain couldn’t process what just transpired.  After reviewing the footage, I came to see that when the handlebars turned to the left to go down the hill the front tire had no grip and slid.  Luckily the bike was going slow and I have cat-like reflexes (check out a post from Nov, 26 2014 titled ‘Another Daytripper to Southeast Ohio’ for more of my cat-like agility).  Although my body came out of the experience unscathed, my bike’s body took a little bit of a beating.  After taking advantage of the photo-op of my bike lying down to take a gravel nap, we got the bike upright and assessed the damage.  The V-Strom’s left turn signal was not completely broken but out of whack.  The plastic hand guard cracked a little further and the ball-end of the clutch lever broke off, nothing a little electrical tape couldn’t fix.  The pannier also got a few more beauty marks.

Feeling a little discouraged we continued down the path.  As we hit more fresh gravel and dirt, we admired the landscape with abundant foliage and babbling brooks.  I noticed a couple spots were there was a trail over the creek running next to us but resisted the urge to take a water-crossing detour.  Both spots seemed to go to private land and, even though there weren’t any noticeable ‘No Trespassing’ signs, I didn’t want to encroach on anybody’s property without consent.  Unbeknownst to us, we would have plenty of opportunities around the next couple bends.

I could tell Gabe wasn’t too excited when we pulled up to the first creek crossing.  We debated going back the way we came but neither of us wanted to brave the uphill turn in deep rocks where I previously fell.  After scouting out the water, we decided it was doable.  It was a fairly far crossing but the water was not very deep and there were not a lot of obstructions on the creek bed.  We noticed that when approaching the crossing the sun’s reflection made it impossible to see below the water.  To ensure we would take the right line, we moved a few big rocks so that they were sticking out of the water.  We crossed one at a time and I volunteered to go first.  After dropping the bike earlier, I needed some retribution.  It was at this point that all of the ride’s earlier frustrations melted away and never returned.  It was a perfect crossing for both of us.

As we ventured up around the next bend, the road disappeared into another creek.  Gabe took the lead this time as the road dropped down into the creek as they became one for a few hundred feet.  The road rose back out of the creek just to drop right back down into the rocky bed.  This sequence repeated a couple times before transforming back into an actual working dirt road.  As we climbed out of the valley the sheer rock walls and steep grade levelled off to a scenic ridgeline before bringing us back to the tarmac.

With the sun starting to hang low in the sky we decided to cut out the last section of the GPS route to take a more direct paved route to I-75.  We jumped on KY-399 and grabbed a fistful of throttle around its glorious twistys and big sweepers.  We rode ridgelines and valleys eventually crossing the Kentucky River.  KY-399 was not on the original route but it was an awesome discovery and a great way to end our long day.  It was a great feeling to get a little speed after the slower pace on those glorious Boone National Forest roads.

We found civilization around London, Kentucky as the sun was starting to set.  Riding down the main strip we stopped to decide where to call home for the night.  As we talked next to a fast food joint another Kentucky native stopped by on his motorbike to share adventure stories.  We eventually found a nice cheap hotel with a great Mexican restaurant in the parking lot.  Burritos, cervezas, and even more friendly Kentucky natives helped us close out a great day of riding.

Day 1 stats: 12 hours and 52 minutes, 319.59 miles, 423 feet minimum elevation and 1223 feet maximum

After breakfast, loading up, gearing up, and a quick motorbike inspection we dove south on I-75 for two exits to Corbin.  We then headed north on some side roads to start our loop around Laurel River Lake.  Shortly after entering back into Boone we had our first run in with the theme of the day, dogs running amok.  As we pressed through some early morning curves I noticed something in the road on the horizon.  As I eased off the gas, I noticed the four legs and big floppy ears of a canine sitting right on the middle strip.  I slowed to a crawl and laid on the horn to notify the owner that they may want to pull Fido of the street.  The dog just sat there and looked at me.  A few miles later there were two more dogs just running around on the fringe of the road next to a farm.

Continuing our scenic tour, we pull off the main paver onto a dirt road that looked more like a driveway.  As we ventured down a road less traveled, I notice that there was an old beaten up house coming up.  As I pulled my eyes back to the front, I notice a shadow sprinting toward me.  Another dog but this one is not happy to see, or hear, us coming.  This was a good-looking pit bull and he was barking his brains out.  I slowed a bit as he got closer and pushed the throttle right before he got to me.  It was a little wet back there so I didn’t push too fast and he ended up catching back up to me after about a hundred yards, still barking.  He eventually tired of me and peeled off.  I came up to a crossroad that had a tree lying diagonally across.  We needed to go right so I went around and waited for Gabe to catch up.  He said that the dog actually nipped at me a couple times but by the time he rode by, it didn’t even give him a second look.  Lucky him.

Back on the pavement for a while, we passed the Laurel Lake dam before hitting some more paved twistys in the woods.  Continuing our southerly direction we pulled off the asphalt and ventured down a long stretch of dirt and gravel National Forest roads.  Shortly after returning to the dirt we took our first break of the day, taking a chance to use Mother Nature’s bathroom, stretch out, and grab a drink and a granola bar.  We noticed that the chosen break spot seemed to be a popular destination of the locals, with a 12 pack of empty beer cans scattered about.  The tree hugger in Gabe and I couldn’t stand the site of these yahoo’s ignorance so we piled them up in hopes that a Ranger would go by at some point and grab them.  A white truck started to come towards us so we flagged them down thinking it was a Ranger.  It was actually a local woman supposedly searching for a lost dog.  I say supposedly because out of nowhere this dude with a shovel wearing a bunch of camo pops out of the woods to our left.  Yeah, that was a scary few moments until we started talking to them.  They give a story of a lost dog and we talk for a while before they take off.  After they left, we discussed the possibility that they were growing weed or cooking Meth out in the middle of nowhere.  It just seemed a little shady, especially with Rambo emerging out of nowhere with a shovel.  Maybe we just watch too much Breaking Bad.

There were some washed out and rutted sections but the roads were in decent condition overall.  I was feeling more and more confident out on the dirt so I started to pick up speed in the sitting and standing positions, leaving Gabe to eat my dust.  I was also practicing quick stops along with locking up the rear brake on the dirt/gravel roads while sitting and standing.  The terrain was phenomenal with scenic ridgelines, striking rock formations, and creeks (unfortunately no more creek crossing for us on this journey).  At one point, we passed up a cemetery out in the middle of nowhere.  Looking back, I wish we would have stopped for a minute to look into the history of some of the tombstones.

Turning off the dirt, we headed west on KY-90 towards the Cumberland Falls, a horseshoe waterfall on the Cumberland River.  Dubbed the Niagara of the South, the falls are 68 feet high and 125 feet wide with an average water flow of 3,600 cubic feet per second.  It is said that on a clear night with a full moon, you can see a “moonbow” or lunar rainbow, supposedly the only place in the western hemisphere the phenomenon takes place.  There is a picnic area, a gift shop, and a little food stand in the park next to the waterfall.  We took advantage of the cheap food and relaxing atmosphere to take our lunch break.  The skies turned grey and it actually started to drizzle as we finished our fare and banter.  Luckily that little bit of precipitation was the only time it actually rained even though the skies remanded dreary until I made it to Nashville.  The falls were to be our separation point where Gabe would be rolling back north towards Columbus and I would be heading south towards Music City.

From the Falls, I continued south towards Whitley City and zig-zagged north and south at the bottom of Kentucky, in a westerly direction.  The scenery continued to be spectacular as I headed out of Boone on KY-92 past the Big South Fork Cumberland River and a plethora of great twistys.  I ran into a long stretch of gravel, seeming to be an old farming road, as I skirted alongside the border of the Boone National Forest.  Once again, the road went to wrack and ruin the further I went, with grazing grasslands and cornfields on either side.  I also passed a few old dilapidated farm buildings and skeletons of small homes.  The theme of the day showed up again, this time a pair of dogs on the side of the road out in between nowhere and nothing.  They looked to have collars so they must run the land.

Just before entering Tennessee on KY-1076 there was another shadow on the horizon in the middle of the street.  This time it was chickens!  I’ve never seen a chicken run so fast.  The rest of the ride was uneventful with a scenic view over Dale Hollow Lake on TN-111 down to I-40 and eventually Nashville.  Tony and Joe had already arrived and sequestered a parking deck pass for the bike.  Nothing left but to unpack the bike, take a quick shower, and head out for some good food, barley pops, live local music, and great conversation.

Day 2 stats: 7 hours and 17 minutes, 258.32 miles, 332 feet minimum elevation and 1390 feet maximum

We had a great time during our short stay in Nashville.  We did the sightseeing thing including checking out the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Johnny Cash Museum, the Dukes of Hazzard Museum and the Sun Records Museum (Cooter’s Place), Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, and a bunch of bars with live music down in the Broadway and Riverfront areas.  The best food of the trip was at the Caney Fork River Valley Grille near Opryland.  They serve southern fried specialties and wild game dishes in a camping lodge décor.  The waitresses were extremely friendly, serving up a large helping of southern hospitality.  Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers did not disappoint, they always put on an excellent show.

The ride back home was all superslab, going through Louisville, then over the Ohio River at Cincinnati, before finally making it home to Columbus.  I of course had to stop and eat lunch at a KFC before leaving Kentucky.  The ride down was phenomenal, the few days with the boys in Nashville was amazing, but it was time to get home to the family…  especially since there was such a quick turn-around time on my next trip.

Day 5 stats: 7 hours and 9 minutes, 404.50 miles, 322feet minimum elevation and 994 feet maximum

Total Stats: 27 hours and 18 minutes, 982.41 miles, 322 feet minimum elevation and 1390 feet maximum elevation___Touring Posts On       #womoco

The ride to the north continued, as we crossed the Cajamarca & the fantastic Amazonas regions of #perú . What a ride! Despite the constant rain day after day, the mud, the landslides that held us still every day for a few hours, the views and the whole experience were fantastic. This part of the country is a must ride.
