Scorpions are secretive, mysterious, and patient animals. What are they thinking as they wait for hours in their burrows? Although we can’t answer that yet, we can use a trick called electrophysiology to listen in to their nerve cells and to get a sense of what they perceive. It looks like mad science, but I will lead you through the maze of equipment we use, demystifying the process and explaining how easy and useful it actually is. _Cara Shillington, PhD (Department of Biology, Eastern Michigan University)_ *Male versus wild: Radio-tracking tarantulas*. Despite their notoriety and popularity in the pet trade, surprisingly little is known about tarantulas in their natural environment.  Where do they go and what do they do when they’re free of the glassy confines of your home aquarium? I will discuss many aspects of their life history and behavior both in captivity and in the wild.  Compared to most other arthropods, these animals are exceedingly long-lived (surviving 15 years or more in some cases).  Females remain in burrows for much of their lives, but matuScience HOAs2014-06-23 01:00:0077

Teenlet is sick again. So I made chicken soup again.
I'm grateful for my awesome stove.
I'm grateful for hot running water.
I'm grateful for electricity.

Because those things that we take for granted mean that a minor throat infection is just that: minor. Millions of people don't have access to clean water and basic hygiene and good food, and minor illnesses become major and life threatening. Babies don't survive. Common childhood diseases are serious.
So I'm grateful.
And if she gets tonsillitis another time and another time; if she needs to see a doctor and have her tonsils taken out, I'm damn grateful that we live in a normal country with Universal health care.

The invention of heterosexuality
#LGBTQ #gender #sexuality #history
This article is a long read, but well worth it and absolutely fascinating.
The very concept of human sexual orientation is a cultural construct. Heterosexuality as a term was first invented just over one hundred years ago to define a psychological perversion. The concept of "normal" is something we made up; something that continues to change over time as culture changes.

Taiwan to legalise same sex marriage

Taiwan's top judges have ruled in favour of gay marriage, paving the way for it to become the first place in Asia to legalise same sex unions

The highest court ruled that current laws preventing members of the same sex from marrying violated their right to equality and were unconstitutional.

#LGBTQ #Taiwan #MarriageEquality #loveislove

Taiwan's top judges have ruled in favour of gay marriage, paving the way for it to become the first place in Asia to legalise same sex unions

The highest court ruled that current laws preventing members of the same sex from marrying violated their right to equality and were unconstitutional.

That's very exciting! The bad news is that it's a risk factor for a lot of things.

I'm actually the direct descendant of a long line of women who successfully gave birth!

I'm grateful for a wheelbarrow. I was wishing for one for ages. And my guardian angel found an old one for me.
All I need now is a holocaust cloak and I'm all set to storm the castle.

I try to move one rock every day. The creek flows through a culvert under a causeway, but it fills with rocks. In the recent flooding the entire riverbed shifted, totally blocking the culvert. It's not an impossible task to clear, but I can't do it all at once.
So I aim for one rock at a time. Just enough to keep the water flowing.

Except over the weekend we had a big rain and the little bit I'd cleared filled up again and the driveway flooded. The rain stopped and the water went down, but the culvert was still blocked. So today I went down to the creek and thanks to the awesome wheelbarrow I cleared not just one rock, but two loads.

So today I went down to the creek and thanks to the awesome wheelbarrow I cleared not just one rock, but two loads.

And then there was that magical moment when I pulled out one big rock and suddenly the water was flowing under the causeway rather than over it, making little vortexes.

I would have done more but by that point my back was killing me. I could barely walk back to the house. So I'm also grateful for painkillers.
Bonus - I'm grateful for my housemate going to pick up Teenlet.

I know I overdid it, but I'm happy for my wheelbarrow and I'm happy that the causeway is dry now and safe to drive on.

+J Stone is a lovely dear, and her house burned down. Anything can happen. I'm living in a rural area on disability too... I can't imagine how I could cope if my house burned down. I know Jeanna will get through this, but I know sometimes we just need help.
Please donate if you can, or reshare. And if you happen to be in Texas and could swing by her place and put up a tent, she could really use the help.
💚

My friend Jeanna has been going through some really hard times lately. She is disabled and has been living on disability income (SSDI, only $800 a month) alone for several years. She was only able to get by on that because she inherited her parents' home way out in the country, outside a small town with just one store. On that minimal budget, there were things she had to let go of, including the homeowner's insurance policy.

A few weeks ago, her house burned down to the ground. Completely gone, and there are no outbuildings. She's been sleeping in her car and under a tarp and in a tent, and sharing the space with her horse Macy and her rescue cats and their new kittens. Since that time, her disability benefits came up for their first review since she got them more than a decade ago and were terminated. She's appealing the decision, but in the meantime has no income at all.

She's going to have to rebuild or replace some sort of shelter and get power back to the property. Then she'll have to sort out a longer-term plan. In the meantime, she needs food; gasoline to get to the doctor, store, and benefits office (which gets costly when almost everything is more than 50 miles away); prescription co-pays, and various other things to keep her going.

If you want to learn more about her story, read the Trial by Fire collection on +J Stone's profile here https://plus.google.com/collection/ERZ-GE

If you can give anything to help her financially, please do. Even $5 is a meal or three and make a difference. Also, please boost the signal and reshare this here and on your other social media. Thank you.___Signal boost

On living love, becoming Lerato, and learning life
I wasn't born with the name Lerato. My parents gave me a throwaway name that I changed legally as soon as I was old enough (they had planned on calling me Christopher), so yes, Majikfaerie really is my real name. But Lerato was given to me by people who knew my heart.

For myself, traveling was never about tourism or seeing sights (I've been in Pisa twice and didn't bother to see the Leaning Tower).

It was about the people. The incredible people I met all over the world. I learned their languages. I learned to fit into their cultures. I learned skills. And I shared, I taught. We exchanged something. It's like having a global family.

I didn't stay much in hotels, I lived with local people. I slept on the floor in mud huts and bamboo shacks.

One place is particularly special - a little village up a remote mountain in Lesotho (which is a tiny landlocked country in southern Africa, for those who aren't familiar).

I stumbled into this village, hitchhiking somewhat aimlessly. I played my mandolin and the people invited me to stay the night. The next day I heard about a local women's cooperative who were working with some people in the Peace Corps and I got invited to come along.

It was awesome - a group of women from a few neighbouring villages were working together to process by hand merino and mohair wool; carding, spinning, dyeing with vegetable dyes they made themselves, and finally - weaving gorgeous blankets.

I was enthralled. Learning these skills was a dream. We gathered herbs and vegetable scraps to make dye. We span wool. We worked the loom. And the women sang all the while.

I learned their songs.

I even learned to pronounce the slurs and clicks in the SiSotho language.

Being a part of that village included a lot of walking; the only water source was a communal well on the edge of the village. I carried a lot of water. It was a lot of hard work. Pounding roots to make dye and carrying firewood is heavy. And we carried everything on our heads.

But I didn't just learn from them: I shared what I knew. They were weaving blankets - I taught them to crochet. I carved crochet hooks for them with my pocket knife.

That was incredible. Sitting in a circle of women, most of whom had babies on their backs, teaching them crocheting while we all sang traditional Sotho chants. Sharing our knowledge and skills over the course of days and weeks, weaving our love into the yarn.

One day one of the boss mamas announced that I'm one of them. She said, "Sister, you live with us and eat with us and you do the work of an African woman, you need a Sotho name". Without debate or discussion, everyone agreed to dub me Lerato. It's a very common name in South Africa, and it stuck. Forever.

It means love.

Green baking dish is the new black
So my friend came by and said he'd gone into a shop to get a present for me - a very specific something, but when he asked in the shop, the sales clerk said, "oh how unusual, with don't have that in stock but another customer was in here just this morning looking for that same thing for a birthday present"
😂 Sounds like my friends know me.
Apparently it also turns out Teenlet was also going to get me the same thing.

But my housemate got in first - a perfect ceramic being dish just right for lasagne - something I've been wishing for for ages (since someone threw out my old one for the crime of having a chipped handle).

Apparently green baking dishes aren't in fashion this season so they got me even better - a plain white one and then hand painted it funky swirly green 💚

Teenlet got me a really nice glass mixing bowl - another thing I've been wishing for (since the same someone broke my old one and neglected to replace it despite promising to).

And my other housemate made me a gorgeous hardwood chopping board with my name carved in it. It's awesome; heavy enough to be a murder weapon 😂 it was Lerato in the kitchen with the chopping board!

I definitely had an incredible fun birthday :)
Big thanks to everyone who sent me cards and well wishes and loves 😊😊😊___

A bucketful of birthday presents!
My friend came around this morning right at coffee o'clock with a bucket for my birthday. A seriously awesome bucket. Coz I'm the kind of girl who really appreciates buckets. Especially a high quality galvanised one!

But more than a bucket, it was filled with goodies. Green jellybeans, green tea, a green hot water bottle with a green cover, a green t shirt, and a gluten free Macadamia passionfruit cheesecake with a green birthday candle in it!

So much awesome I can't even!!!!!

I'm so grateful for the awesome things that grow. The biodiversity, the lush abundance.

I'm grateful for laughing with my friend. Maybe just sleep deprivation, but we cracked up hysterically at something really silly and it felt great to laugh.

I'm grateful for my housemates. Building a community and my chosen family. It's warm and fuzzy to know I can go out to do things when Teenlet is poorly and there's a bunch of people around to look in on her.

I'm grateful for the guardian angel who fixes things.
I'm grateful for cooking with gas
I managed to throw one rock today.

I'm grateful for my gum boots. Call them wellies, Wellingtons, galoshes, rain boots, Gummistiefel, magafayim, whatever you like. It's cold and wet and muddy and I did some work in the garden today. I'm grateful for my funky waterproof boots.

There's a little meditation I do. The creek flows under a causeway that has a very narrow little culvert. Which is fine when the water level is low, but it floods very easily. And the culvert fills up with rocks as the riverbed shifts. Clearing it out is a job of epic proportions. It really needs a backhoe.
But every day I walk by and I throw one rock out of the water. Sometimes I spend an hour and clear a big hole. But even just one rock at a time, slowly slowly it keeps the water flowing. And I take that one rock and patch up potholes in the driveway. Slowly slowly we build things. By hand. One rock at a time.

Raising the roof, raised beds, comfy bed

I'm grateful for the garden. I'm grateful for fixing the roof, and my housemates repurposing the scrap metal and timber to make a veggie garden. I'm grateful for my cosy bed at the end of the day.

First Australian senator to breastfeed in federal parliament
#humanrights #breastfeeding #Australia

Greens Senator Larissa Waters breastfed her two month old daughter on the floor of Federal Parliament - the first to do so since parliamentary rules were changed last year to allow mothers to feed their children in the chamber.

"I am so proud that my daughter Alia is the first baby to be breastfed in the Federal Parliament," Senator Waters said.

Previously parliamentary rules stated children were technically banned in the chamber and breastfeeding mothers were given a proxy vote.

This is a great step forward in rights for women in the workplace, and promoting the best possible care for babies and mothers.

Goats on a train
Of course there are many funny stories that come with backpacking across the entire Indian subcontinent with a goat, one day I'll get to more adventures.
But here's the train story, and requested by +Marla Caldwell

#intrepidtravel #goat

My goat, Sita.

In the year 2000 I adopted an orphaned goat in Nepal. I named her Sita and hitch hiked with her all the way to the south of India. I had this idea that I could raise a small herd of goats, and walk with them to Africa, making my living by trading goat's milk and cheese. As you do.

I had so many crazy adventures with Sita, possibly one of the best was one time I decided to get on a train rather than hitch hike. Trains in India are their own special kind of insanity, if you haven't been on one, it's hard to understand. But understanding Indian bureaucrazy always gets one far.

So I got on the train, and grabbed myself a bunk in the lowest class sleeper - these are hard three-tiered bench bunks crammed in, tourists who are really stingy get them, and they pay extra for reservations at the tourist ticket office. So I got on one, without a ticket, and set myself up all comfy on a bunk I knew was unreserved (the reservation lists are posted at the doors to the carriages). When the ticket inspector came along, he saw the goat, and didn't even bother with my ticket, indicating the goat, he said "what is this?"

"It's a goat", I replied
"No, but what is this?" He asked again
"Bakeri" (the word for goat in Hindi).
We went on like this for a while, before he said, "No, no no, you can't have a goat, where are your papers, where is the permission for this?"
I raised my voice ever so slightly and said to him, "You tell me where are the papers!" I gestured to the clipboard of reservations and paperwork in his hand. "You have all the permissions right there! Where are the papers, Ji? Don't ask me where the papers are, you have them all? Where are they? Where are the permissions? You are supposed to have all the records, Ji!"
Flustered, he started shuffling through his papers, and then he went away, never to return.

I'm grateful for my fluffy green dressing gown. It's warm and snuggly and comforting.

I survived a challenging day. I achieved things. Phone calls and shopping and errands.

I had an interesting conversation with the checkout girl at the supermarket, which ended with her being amazed that I'm old enough to be her mother and her telling me that I must be a really cool mum and she wishes her parents would be like me. So that was funny. She's 17. She thought I was about her age at first.

And then I had a huge conversation with someone else, a nasty, abusive horrible person who directly and knowingly enabled someone to harm Teenlet. I rose up and flam'd amazement with my furious anger at this small minded, misogynistic man. I told him exactly how I feel and exactly how his actions hurt us. How he should be ashamed of himself and how he let his whole community down for the sake of supporting a men's rights activists organisation. How he should be ashamed for helping someone who thinks it's acceptable to punch a child and deny her medical care and food. He should be ashamed to expose his own daughter to a man known to be abusive, even after his daughter complained to him that she felt uncomfortable and creeped out by that man - but he told her off for complaining and defended the man his daughter said she felt unsafe around.
I raged at him and summoned all the Elder Gods to exact their vengeance. I vented everything; years of pent up hurt and frustration and anger...

Except I said it all in my head. He pretended he didn't see me and I didn't exist for ten minutes while I was standing just a metre away from him. And I was trapped in social convention and I didn't say a word. I stayed calm, completed my errand, watching this man stone faced ignoring me. And I said nothing.

I collected up my child and drove home and unpacked the groceries and cleaned the fridge and made dinner... And somewhere in the middle of my kitchen I fell apart.

So all I have is a head full of all the things I wish I could say, and a heart that feels like screaming.
And my fluffy dressing gown.

I survived another day.
I'll try to be grateful
