I've been back in San Francisco for a little over a month now. For a while, I was going through major mood swings and sometimes feeling sick to my stomach thinking about the future. I looked up "reverse culture shock" on the web and found quite a few articles on it! I'm not the only one who has gone through this. Here's how I dealt with my reverse culture shock:

Now that I'm back in the states and can pay less for shipping, the handmade jewelry in my Etsy shop is MUCH cheaper! I also found two brand new pairs of go-go boot covers I made back in the day, so I re-listed them. These are the last items like these that I will be selling so please check it out and support an unemployed loser! I mean artist! Thanks guys, I appreciate it! ♥

My adventure continues! This video shows why I left Taiwan and how I felt when I came back to CA. It shows scenes from Taichung and SF, some of my friends, and some food and puppies too.

Well, I did it. I moved back to California (SF area), where I grew up. I was so sad to leave my beloved Taiwan, where I spent 3 of the best years of my life. Why did I leave? I'll tell you in my next video, coming soon. Meanwhile, I'm getting over my reverse culture shock and feeling much better. (Check out this amazing weather!)

Toto and I finally got a chance to film Basic Mandarin for Travel Part 2! It teaches you more words that you'll find extremely useful on your trip to Taiwan or China:
kuai/yuan (dollars) 塊/元
ma (?) 嗎
shenme (what) 什麼
dui (right) 對
daizi (bag) 袋子
nei yong (for here) 內用
wai dai (to go) 外帶
mei guanxi (no problem) 沒關係
This is the last video we'll be able to do together for a while because guess what, I'm moving back to California (SF bay area) tomorrow! Yes, for real this time. Sigh. I'm feeling sad about leaving Taiwan. It really has been great. But it's time for the next adventure..

A favorite video from my days at NMAtv... this video got a lot of views because people thought I was really naked under that black bar. I should probably do more videos like these where I show more of my weird side. What do you think?

Another hair tutorial - How to cut your side bangs into straight bangs! Man... I know people have short attention spans and prefer short videos, but this one is only 2 minutes long. Let me know whether or not you think this video is too short!
I was a hairstylist for 7 years in California (San Jose and Los Angeles). People ask me why I'm not doing that right now. Well, if I tried being a hairstylist in Taiwan, I wouldn't make much money. I also have a language barrier to consider. I do, however, do hair at home for friends occasionally, and always will.
If I moved back to the western world, I would work in a salon again if necessary. It's a great backup to have because finding a job isn't too difficult. However, I would be more interested in pursuing a job doing video production or editing. =)

Believe it or not (and definitely not judging from my last video!), I have always been a shy and awkward person. This video is my story of how I overcame my shyness, which didn't actually happen until just a few years ago!
I do feel a bit like I'm sharing something very personal, which is a little daunting, but I've been thinking of doing this for a while and finally decided I was ready. I really hope I can inspire some young, shy people out there with this video!

I'm teaching myself After Effects! It's really exciting, and it's a good mixture of my two favorite things: computers and art. It also has elements from my favorite programs, Final Cut Pro and Photoshop. I'll post something up eventually, and for you guys who are not into beauty tutorials, I promise I'll have a funny video up for you guys soon up on my fun/travel channel!
But for now, this video below (from my beauty channel) is for people who have tried using fake lashes before and just found it to be the biggest pain in the a$$. It can be easy with some practice and a few tips, so take a look!

Another hair tutorial for my beauty channel! This is a really quick and simple video on how to do a curling iron style for long layered hair.
Even though I started doing hair and makeup over ten years ago, it's a good time for me to start these types of videos now that I'm comfortable speaking in front of the camera, and know how to film and light myself, and edit video. However, now there are TONS of makeup and hair channels on YouTube to compete with. All I can do is stick with it, keep making good quality videos with simple instructions and hope I can get noticed in the mix.
If you like this video and want to see more like this, please share! I can use all the support I can in finding more viewers. Thanks so much!

Here in Taichung I live close to a park where people bring their adorable dogs to run around every day. I've been collecting footage of some of the dogs and puppies here and there. People probably think I'm such a creepy dog stalker by now.
In Taiwan, people don't really go up to pet strangers' dogs as often as they do in America... unless they are really big and friendly looking, like a golden retriever or old english sheepdog. (Big dogs are more rare because people typically live in small apartments and don't have yards.) And as a result, most dogs stick closely to their owners in public.
Sometimes shop owners (or even restaurant owners) keep their dogs with them all day. I've seen dogs go outside, walk themselves, and then return to their owner's shops. Some dogs are also trained to ride on scooters, balanced on the floor between their owner... more »

It's been 5 years, I think another hair tutorial has been long overdue! I'm now no longer shy to speak on camera, I have much more filming experience, better editing software and a better camera and lighting situation! And now I live in Taiwan instead of California! My, how my world has changed.
I filmed this yesterday, it's a french twist with an added roll and some volume on top. This video is for my first channel, which has the fauxhawk tutorial on it. I plan to make some more hair and beauty tutorials for that channel soon! Thanks for watching guys!

And let me know if you would like to see more beauty tutorials from me, and what kind! (Little known fact: I was a hairstylist and makeup artist for 6 years before coming to Taiwan!)

I have some free time lately, and am enjoying staying in one place, especially now that it's getting cold. (Yes, Taiwan does get cold!)
Other than making jewelry I'm also studying Chinese again, in the form of idioms. This is a good way to learn Chinese because not only do you learn new words, but also commonly used phrases. Here's an example:
白駒過隙 (Bái jū guò xì)
Literal translation: "White colt passes over crevice."
Figurative meaning: "Time flies." (Such is the speed of a horse running over a crevice.)
Funny, huh? Yeah, a little weird but every language has its quirks. You kinda get used to it after a while.
I'm also thinking of doing some new videos soon. If you have topics you would like me to talk about, let me know in the comments below!

I started making my own jewelry earlier this year. I remember seeing bracelets in shops here in Taiwan and thinking, hey, I can do that! But I can make it more my style! I had a craving to break out my needle-nose pliers and start bending little pieces of metal. (I like to do that for some reason.) I found out where the DIY supply district was in Taipei, and went a little crazy buying chains, cord, findings and charms, mostly in silver and black.
Well, I made a bunch of bracelets and gave some away, and people suggested I try selling them. I put it off for a while, but then I found myself with a whole ton of extra supplies, so I decided there was no harm in posting some online.
I used to sell go-go boot covers on Etsy, and my online shop was right there waiting for me. (If you click on the link that says "sales" you can see those old boot covers I made and sold ... more »

I'm moving back to Southern California in just a few days. (I lived there before, from '04-'09.) I'm sad about leaving Taiwan, kind of depressed even. But I guess I have to move onwards and hopefully upwards. I will miss my Taiwan friends dearly, and look forward to seeing my LA friends again. And if I never move back here, I'm sure it will always be my favorite vacation destination.

The weather in Taiwan is absolutely perfect right now. Warm, not hot or cold, not even rainy! October is definitely the best time to visit. Too bad good weather doesn't last forever, and neither will my stay in Taiwan, sadly enough. Who is ever ready to leave a place like this, with its amazing food, public transportation and nice people? Not me... but I have to follow the opportunities. Where will I go, and when? Those I am not 100% sure, as of right now. But I will let you know soon!

Well, I'm back in good ol' Taipei. Going from Taiwan to Vietnam to California and back gave me some back-and-forth culture shock! Enough time had passed to be able to view America from a more outside perspective. (I grew up in California and have lived in Taipei for 2.5 years.) My California trip was awesome but I did start to miss Taiwan after a few weeks. People often ask me how America compares to Taiwan. Here's a quick summary!
1. Food
The food in Taiwan is delicious, cheap, and can be considered relatively healthy, natural, not full of additives and hormones, etc. Portions are easier to manage; you can get small bowl of rice with some meat on it, or a vegetable dish, pay a low price and then have room left over to go to the special noodle shop next door. Eating here is more of an adventure!
The portions in America are gigantic and expensive. Also, al... more »

I had this photo from shooting with George Hsia in Taipei a few months ago, and I thought I'd better share it! I thought I was being original with the retro look, but it seems like it's in style all of a sudden, especially with the hair flowers, red lipstick, leopard print, sky-high pumps and winged eyeliner. This means the look will eventually go OUT of style! Hopefully not anytime soon...

I'm back in California at the moment, namely the San Francisco Bay Area, where I grew up! (I snuck this photo from my dad's neighbor's yard.) I haven't been back in 1.5 years and this time, after living in Taiwan and especially visiting Vietnam, I finally realize how fortunate I was to grow up in such American middle class comfort. (Things like having a car, living in a decent house, and having money for shopping are true luxuries to most people in the world! What a spoiled brat I've been.) And the weather here really is awesome. I'll definitely make a video about this trip soon... in which you will meet my brother! =D

Ho Chi Minh was Vietnam's great leader who made Vietnam an independent country after defeating the French rule. His face is on all the Vietnamese dollar bills (called "dong") and he is very highly respected in Vietnam. The Democratic Republic of Vietnam is communist-run. (When I ask my Vietnamese friends how they feel about this, they say it has its advantages and disadvantages just like anything else.) In Hanoi I visited his old residence, a simple and small house on stilts, and his memorial. This building I'm standing in front of is his mausoleum, where visitors can view his preserved body. (It was closed that day so I wasn't able to go in!) It was at this spot where he read the Declaration of Independence on September 2nd, 1945.

Here I am at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi, Vietnam, standing in front of some water puppet figurines. Starting from around the 11th century, Northern Vietnamese people would put on water puppet shows for each other when the rice fields were flooded. These wooden, lacquered puppets with moving limbs are controlled using long sticks and strings under the water so they look like they are floating or swimming. Dragon puppets can also now spit water or shoot sparks. The puppeteers stand behind a screen in waist-deep water. Shows are traditional and feature live music. One of the main theaters, Thăng Long Water Puppet Theatre, is located in downtown Hanoi.

In Thuy Nguyen (Haiphong, Vietnam), I spent one night in a house surrounded by rice fields. I arrived after dark via bus, barge, then scooter, and couldn't see much of the surroundings. The roads were dirt and the air was sweet and clean. The people live in concrete buildings with everything (water, electricity, internet access).. except air conditioning. We ate, drank and sang karaoke until midnight. At 5:30am I was rudely awakened by a rooster, had two itchy mosquito bites on my left pinky, and felt sweaty and sticky in that room. I knew I wouldn't be going to sleep anytime soon so I took a walk in my pajamas. The temperature was perfect, the dragonflies were huge, and this was the lovely view.
