Video game soundtracks

I was listening to the linked soundtrack today and it got me thinking about game soundtracks and when they became so good. Halo was really the first soundtrack that I distinctly remember enjoying enough to listen to outside of playing the game. Unreal Tournament is another.

When did this change happen? I know there are plenty of iconic soundtracks like Mario and Tetris, but they don't hold up in the same way. I am guessing the late 90's, but as I am not a well-versed gamer, I'd like to hear your thoughts. What soundtracks did/do you enjoy, and when are they from? What makes it so enjoyable?

Personally, I feel like games became less of a game and more of an immersive experience in the late 90's and early 00's. The soundtrack is a huge part of that; I feel like I'm the character, the music gets me going for certain... more »

The soundtrack is a huge part of that; I feel like I'm the character, the music gets me going for certain actions, and so on. On another note, I wonder what a graph of the soundtrack budgets over time would look like. ___

Google Now needs a few tweaks

I like Google Now. It's handy for tracking the things I need to take care of, and occasionally alerting me to things that I might not have otherwise noticed. However, one of these alerts is really not helpful.

When Now alerts me to the fact that a musician I listen to is playing locally, it really really needs to do this a week in advance, instead of a day. Buying tickets the day of is either more expensive or they won't be available at all. As it is, it seems like it's taunting me. "Oh hey, you like this artist but tickets are either sold out or being scalped. Sucks to be you!"

WTF, Google. That's a terrible implementation of a useful feature.

Did you know that Miley Cyrus can actually sing?

This is a cover of a classic Dolly Parton song, Jolene. I heard a remix (Dolly Parton- Jolene (Kygo Remix)) last night and the song has been stuck in my head ever since. Parton had great vocals.

The Dude does the ALS ice bucket challenge

I recently did the ice bucket challenge and donated to the ALSA (which you should do, by the way). It was a lot of fun and a little bit cold.

Please check them out at http://www.alsa.org/ and donate.

As for the video, my inspiration can be seen here: The Big Lebowski (1/12) Movie CLIP - Where's the Money, Lebowski? (1998) HD

Song of the day

I've been into EBM a lot lately. It's high energy, it's got a hint of darkness (depending on the band), and it makes me move. This song has an incredible intro melody and I've been listening to it non-stop.

Go forth and dance!

Word of the day

I am thinking of starting up a word of the day, except from an old version of Webster's dictionary, in which the word is given much more than a definition. See an example below, and look at how much more there is than you'll find in any modern dictionary. When you're done, look at the link and set this up. Learn to speak rather than use words, to make the world shimmer that much brighter.

1. To utter words; esp., to converse familiarly; to speak, as in familiar discourse, when two or more persons interchange thoughts.

I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you, walk with you, and so following, but I will not eat with you. Shak.

2. To confer; to reason; to consult.

Let me talk with thee of thy judgments. Jer. xii. 1.

3. To prate; to speak impertinently. [Colloq.] To talk of, to relate; to tell; to give an account of; as, authors talk of the wonderful remains of Palmyra.

Reading list

I think I will be using this shirt store as a reading list going forward. There are 79 books listed, and I've read 30 of them. I have a few more on my shelf or in my tablet already, and am just working my way through other books.

What are your favorites on here, either as a book or a shirt? Any that you recommend skipping over? I can only think of Atlas Shrugged as not being very good.

Via +Brandy Ellis

Edit: Ugh, the women's shirts section has different books. Is it really so hard to offer the same bookshirts to men and women?

I do not understand this. I really really don't get it. Do they not understand that their freedom ends at other people?

"Without a robust religious exemption," they wrote, "this expansion of hiring rights will come at an unreasonable cost to the common good, national unity and religious freedom."

Common good - bullshit. You just want to continue discriminating.
National unity - wat. This is bullshit through and through.
Religious freedom - I'll only buy this if you're not harming anyone else.

Private organizations should have some exemptions, but only if they're non-profit and their main goal is religious in nature. In this case, a religious college would fall under that umbrella. I can't wait to see how the church of FSM uses this. I think we should all start companies with the sole purpose of using this ruling to mess with people. ___

I'd say that this pretty well does away with the "an armed society is a polite society" argument.

If Game of Thrones took place in America, where would you live?

Kings Landing = Washington, DC

It's the capitol, it's full of corrupt people vying for titles, and it's built on the backs of the poor. Everyone is vying for the Iron Throne and it's hard to figure out who to root for.

Winterfell = Boston, MA

Beautiful in the summer and uninhabitable in the winter. The inhabitants incorrectly think their city is the center of the empire. It is, however, the only real city in its region. (Providence? Really?) The people there are honorable and resilient, and spend much of their time watching sports. Not many black people.

The King's Road = I-95

A highly trafficked route from Winterfell to King's Landing, the road is littered with inns and merchants. There are also many bandits who live alongside it in dangerous places like New Haven, Newark, and Baltimore.

Beyond the Wall = Canada

It's cold, it's vast, and it's terrifying. But the wildlings are a good people once you get to know them. Also it's governed by a monarch far away who doesn't actually hold any real power in the people's minds.

Castle Black = Canadian Border Crossing

This is all that separates us from the unknown terror of the great white north. Also it's manned by a bunch of humorless guys that don't get laid.

The Iron Islands = Pittsburgh, PA

Cold, wet, gray, and nicknamed for metal, this is a place that was once prominent but is now full of working class people and pirates. And the pirates have been horrible for many years.

Casterly Rock = New York City

The regional capital (and the financial center of the Empire), it used to be ruled by a different group - until they were tricked into trusting a foreigner. Now it's ruled by rich people who think they're better parents than they are.

Lannisport = Greenwich, CT

Situated close to the main city, but far enough away that the citizens don't need to be bothered. Also, it's full of money and incest.

Harrenhal = Chicago, IL

It's rich, and it's on the way to most things. But the governing of it seems to be cursed as no one can rule it for long. And it burnt down once.

Valyria = Detroit, MI

Due to its fearsome beasts with great abilities to travel, this was once the center of the world and a shining jewel of civilization. But then a cataclysmic event rendered it a smoldering ruin of its former glory. The only thing that endures is a bit of their ancient music. And the secrets of manufacturing things there have long been forgotten.

Dorn = Napa Valley, CA

Remote area known for women, wine, and boringness.

The Dreadfort = North Dakota

A stronghold of the north but nowhere near as important as the center of the region. And unless you're from here, living here is torture.

Qarth = Savannah, GA

A wealthy port city, the inhabitants think that it's the greatest city that ever was or will be, and yet no one outside the city cares. Filled with many rich creepy people.

The Twins = West Virginia

A location that would be pointless were it not a river crossing en route to other, better places. It's filled with homely women with the occasional hot one sprinkled in. Also, weddings here can get out of hand.

Lys = Atlantic City, NJ

There are two main characteristics: it's surrounded by rough sea, and it's known far and wide for its pleasure houses.

High Garden = Berkeley, CA

In the far reaches of the realm, it is known as a flowery place with lax sexual attitudes. Also a garden of high.

Volantis = Santa Barbara, CA

A rich, old coastal village where the slaves aren't allowed to ever touch the nobility.

Storm's End = San Francisco, CA

A coastal city with a mighty fortress on the Bay. And it's gay friendly.

Yunkai = Reno, NV

A desert town that is known for its sex slaves and incompetent defenses.

Dothrak = Texas

Incorrectly thinks it's an independent country just because everyone there has weapons. Meanwhile most people who live in the capitol are unaware that this is a place.

Vaes Dothrak = Austin, TX

The cultural center of a vast wasteland, where the barbaric activities of the surrounding areas are banned within city walls. Full of people who struck out on their own because they hate their parents.

Red Waste = West Texas___

Trolling doesn't pay, or hopefully not

It's nice to see this happen. Company created just to sue people for "patent" infringement is forced to pay the court fees of the winner, the company they'd originally sued. While this doesn't really fix the overall patent issue, it's at least nice to see that there's some precedent for making the trolls pay. I would like to think that this is going to make more companies fight back, and patent trolls think twice before suing someone.

Next up: getting people at the US Patent Office to have some technical knowledge and stop issuing terrible patents.

Waste not, want not

I love that people are looking for more local food, but let's not be wasteful about it. Native Americans used almost every part of the animals they hunted. Why can't we use almost every crop that is grown in our fields? Why can't we use the methods that produce better tasting foods?

Inefficiency is terrible; we're using a lot of soil poorly, when some simple changes could make for far better produce. It's not very difficult to do, as it's been done by farmers for hundreds of years. Can this not be applied to large scale farms? Come on America, we can do better than this.

Education

I'm really saddened by the state of education in the USA and the world. It solves so many social problems, from the local to the global levels. It's really our only hope for the future, and it's looking bleaker every day if the USA is any indication.

Throwing money at it won't help; look at what we have now. Standardized testing, teachers teaching to those tests, and a generation of kids who don't know how to think. We teach facts but not skills. If you can't logically arrive at a conclusion given some inputs, what can you do?

Are we doomed to be an outlier, the few centuries where education was powerful, or can we bring it back to its rightful place near the top of our priority list?

We may share the same patch of pavement, but there's a lot that can be done to make life easier for drivers and cyclists. Let's start with the stop.

This data highlights something that drives me crazy. Look at the number of states with some sort of law like this. It's not that many. But the data from those states supports their law, the safety of everyone involved, and it makes sense for bikers in terms of saving energy. You'd think this would be common sense, but no. Politicians are involved.

I'd love to see larger sites do this for the general .gov block. Might be that if Google weren't very fast, the government might put some pressure on the FCC to do the right thing rather than the corporate-backed thing.

A New Constitutional Convention

Vermont has passed a resolution that is calling for a new amendment to the Constitution. The end goal is to take money out of politics, especially as cash has taken a huge jump since the Citizens United decision. Ten other states are considering similar resolutions; while this is far short of the necessary 38 (to amend the Constitution), it's nice to see this being discussed.

A convention would likely have a lot unintended consequences, assuming it even happens. I can't say as I think it will succeed, but if it starts people talking and pushing for change, it's going to help. It's pretty obvious we need to do something.

Religious freedom is under attack in the USA, and it's by the social conservatives.

I really hope that this works, because it's a brilliant bit of legal turnabout. This should apply to all states if it works, and could be a great way to wipe out codified bigotry against same-sex marriage.

Truth to power

Oliver: No, the target is not the American people, but it seems that too often you miss the target and hit the person next to them going 'Whoa, him!'

Alexander: You see, we're not just out there gathering information, listening to their phone calls, or collecting their emails. But, that's the first thing that people jump to.

Oliver: But you are out there doing that. You're just saying that you're not then reading them. You are gathering that data.

Comedians have always spoken truth to power, and for hundreds of years it was a fine line between a laugh and death. You'd think that in a society with free speech as a right, this wouldn't be a big deal anymore. Yet here we are, with a press that doesn't bother with their duty, and comedians who provide a look and a laugh at the state of... more »

Corporate bullshit

Like a facebook page? Visit a website? Want to sue them in court? You're out of luck, if GM gets its way.

This is just patently ridiculous. I'm not sure it would hold up in court since it's incredibly broad, but it's there until someone challenges it. If this happens, I foresee the use of a lot of proxies just to do your daily corporate website surfing.

It's come to the point where satire, rather than being funny, is just sad.

This isn't because it's poorly written; far from it, in fact. It's sad because it's true.

Using public transit properly, or: How not to be an ass when you're on the train

This goes for any city. In Boston, I notice it way more on weekends when tourists come in from their non-public transit areas. Even in non-commuting hours, this is all too common. In Germany, they have lines painted onto the platform to direct you. Of course, this only works if your train doors always line up, which isn't the case for many city trains.

I can think of plenty of other train tips, but this one gets me. >:O
