Sean Cowen43,829My Morning Circle: By Far, The Most Interesting and Unusual Circle I've Ever Created...In the beginning of October, I asked people to dig down deep and give me names of great people to add to a must-read morning circle. ( http://bit.ly/16ow9Cm ) This is the FIRST CIRCLE of those names. I have omitted a few names by my own prerogative and I've left off PAGE names as I'd like to create a separate circle for those. By and large, though, this list is the result of all the recommendations I received. There are more names to follow, as I'm still working down through the comments...What I Originally Asked of Anyone Leaving Comments and Recommendations...I'm looking for a SINGLE CIRCLE of pure awesomeness - a circle that gives me incredible content, insight, analysis, humor, a dose of the erudite, funny, sad, melancholy, happy - in short - I'm looking for one circle to throw into my stream that gets my days started off on the right foot.But I need your input. Who should I add to this circle?We all know the usual suspects (and some of those people will definitely be included if you recommend them), but I am seeking and searching for those little mentioned and possibly unknown to me people who will jump start my day.I'm not looking for popularity or anything specific - just let me know about the people you would include if you were creating this same circle. #circle   #coolcircle   #recommendedcircle   #circleoftheday  P.S. Added myself against my better judgement as I was chosen on this list as well. Now you know... :-)2013-10-20 15:53:26499612966CC G+

Jennifer Bailey1,873,208This began as a relevancy circle - and Google+ has a ton of use and info on my habits so actually it's very accurate.  But I kept moving down my circles and picking people to add - people who might be new to me but who I have had a wonderful time engaging with them.  Some of these people only post rarely, some of them post a ton :)  I follow Historians, Photographers, Artists, Thinkers and Rebels.  Some of their posts might shock you.  Some of their posts will delight you.  Some of the people I added merely because I know them from engaging wildly well on my own threads and have come to know and like them that way.142 people - some I know personally - some I just know here through this medium.  But I am the better for it.2013-05-20 22:21:0014262563CC G+

Aaron Wood213,460In the entire time I've been here on G+ I've never shared a circle of my own. I've shared a few circles that other compiled, but never something picked from the people I'm following.I know, I know... very selfish of me, especially since I've been in a lot of circle shares since the good ol' days of beta.Well, I'm going to make up for that now. This is my "Battle Tested" circle. It includes a lot of familiar faces and maybe some people you haven't seen before.This is quite the rogues gallery of different people. You have been warned. ;)(As is customary, I added myself... because... yeah. lol)2013-05-17 16:07:3110611218CC G+
Danial Hallock6,197The Three Hundred"Completed" CopyAs most of you probably know by now, I have been working on a #circlemanagement  project for quite some time now, in which I sought to increase the vetting process that occurs when I add people to my circles.  As most of you also know, I've been absolutely swamped and have barely had time to share content (let alone post my own or curate circles), so it's taken me a while to get here.However, after only six months to the day (lucky coincidence) I've managed to finish what I would consider a mostly-complete copy of this circle.  You can see the vetting process and the history of it here (http://goo.gl/kqE8h), and as always I encourage you to add and share this circle as you see fit!If you're notified, you're in it!  If you do not wish to be included in any future circle shares, please let me know via private message. #circleshare   #sharingiscaring   #engagers  2013-04-20 13:17:463019914101CC G+

Dave Tozier0+Danial Hallock originally shared this post:The Three HundredRevised CopyIt's been about a month since my last share of #thethreehundred  so I wanted to share the revised copy of the circle; and true to my word, there have been a lot of revisions in the last month.For example, I've gone through each and every one of the 200 some odd recommendations and circle shares that came about from the last circle share.  As a result, of the original 297 that were shared a little under a month ago (http://goo.gl/xqGb4), I removed approximately 137 300ers and added 129 new members.  You can expect this circle to continue to change, but I think the triple digit adjustments are mostly done.  For those of you just joining us, this is a continuation of a project where I've been changing my #circlemanagement  strategy from purpose based to engagement based (http://goo.gl/kqE8h).As always, If you're notified you're in it. To the best of my ability everyone in this circles has personally hungout with me... and it was fun.. :)This circle is where I have made the most lasting connections on G+.... Meeting many of these people in real life since I met them in hangouts. I joined G+ Jun 29th, 2011. I hung out then and pretty much most days since. I was voted Google+ Hangout Queen this year :)I've seen amazing things in hangouts, Tours of far away countries, cooking classes, airplane trips, photowalks, concerts, language lessons, trivia nights, relationship advice, seeing famous landmarks, attending behind the scenes of tv shows, hangouts with famous celebrities, and countless late night and early morning hangouts with fabulous normal people from all parts of the world and right next door... TV shows have nothing on this. Countless experiences all without leaving my living room.If you want to try out hangouts on G+, ADD THIS CIRCLE and join one! Dead tree edition

Why do you buy physical books?

Many of these hit home for me. I have many fond memories of browsing local bookstores as a child (and an adult). There's a smell to them, a bit of dust, creaky wooden floors. Some have books nicely shelved, others have stacks on the shelves when there isn't enough space. They're warm. They're friendly. You run into friends there. You meet new people there. The employees always have a great recommendation for you. There are a thousand worlds you've never been to and they're all available.

I love the sense of books. Thin pages, good covers, the dust when you take it off the shelf. The smell. The sound of pages flipping. These things hit me. A tablet screen, even an e-reader screen, isn't the same. It never will be. They just are too different. It feels impersonal. A book is truly mine.

I recently did the ice bucket challenge and donated to the ALSA (which you should do, by the way). It was a lot of fun and a little bit cold.

Please check them out at http://www.alsa.org/ and donate.

As for the video, my inspiration can be seen here: The Big Lebowski (1/12) Movie CLIP - Where's the Money, Lebowski? (1998) HD

Song of the day

I've been into EBM a lot lately. It's high energy, it's got a hint of darkness (depending on the band), and it makes me move. This song has an incredible intro melody and I've been listening to it non-stop.

Go forth and dance!

FUN, n. Sport; vulgar merriment. A low word.

Apparently a lot has changed since 1828. It seems fun was only had by the hoi polloi. I wonder what the educated classes did instead, socialize?

Word of the day

I am thinking of starting up a word of the day, except from an old version of Webster's dictionary, in which the word is given much more than a definition. See an example below, and look at how much more there is than you'll find in any modern dictionary. When you're done, look at the link and set this up. Learn to speak rather than use words, to make the world shimmer that much brighter.

1. To utter words; esp., to converse familiarly; to speak, as in familiar discourse, when two or more persons interchange thoughts.

3. To prate; to speak impertinently. [Colloq.] To talk of, to relate; to tell; to give an account of; as, authors talk of the wonderful remains of Palmyra.

Reading list

I think I will be using this shirt store as a reading list going forward. There are 79 books listed, and I've read 30 of them. I have a few more on my shelf or in my tablet already, and am just working my way through other books.

What are your favorites on here, either as a book or a shirt? Any that you recommend skipping over? I can only think of Atlas Shrugged as not being very good.

Via +Brandy Ellis

Edit: Ugh, the women's shirts section has different books. Is it really so hard to offer the same bookshirts to men and women?

No. Just no.

I do not understand this. I really really don't get it. Do they not understand that their freedom ends at other people?

"Without a robust religious exemption," they wrote, "this expansion of hiring rights will come at an unreasonable cost to the common good, national unity and religious freedom."

Common good - bullshit. You just want to continue discriminating.
National unity - wat. This is bullshit through and through.
Religious freedom - I'll only buy this if you're not harming anyone else.

Private organizations should have some exemptions, but only if they're non-profit and their main goal is religious in nature. In this case, a religious college would fall under that umbrella. I can't wait to see how the church of FSM uses this. I think we should all start companies with the sole purpose of using this ruling to mess with people. ___

From the "surprise surprise" files comes a bit about lax gun laws and gun deaths.

I'd say that this pretty well does away with the "an armed society is a polite society" argument.

If Game of Thrones took place in America, where would you live?

Kings Landing = Washington, DC

It's the capitol, it's full of corrupt people vying for titles, and it's built on the backs of the poor. Everyone is vying for the Iron Throne and it's hard to figure out who to root for.

Winterfell = Boston, MA

Beautiful in the summer and uninhabitable in the winter. The inhabitants incorrectly think their city is the center of the empire. It is, however, the only real city in its region. (Providence? Really?) The people there are honorable and resilient, and spend much of their time watching sports. Not many black people.

The King's Road = I-95

A highly trafficked route from Winterfell to King's Landing, the road is littered with inns and merchants. There are also many bandits who live alongside it in dangerous places like New Haven, Newark, and Baltimore.

Beyond the Wall = Canada

It's cold, it's vast, and it's terrifying. But the wildlings are a good people once you get to know them. Also it's governed by a monarch far away who doesn't actually hold any real power in the people's minds.

Castle Black = Canadian Border Crossing

This is all that separates us from the unknown terror of the great white north. Also it's manned by a bunch of humorless guys that don't get laid.

The Iron Islands = Pittsburgh, PA

Cold, wet, gray, and nicknamed for metal, this is a place that was once prominent but is now full of working class people and pirates. And the pirates have been horrible for many years.

Casterly Rock = New York City

The regional capital (and the financial center of the Empire), it used to be ruled by a different group - until they were tricked into trusting a foreigner. Now it's ruled by rich people who think they're better parents than they are.

Lannisport = Greenwich, CT

Situated close to the main city, but far enough away that the citizens don't need to be bothered. Also, it's full of money and incest.

Harrenhal = Chicago, IL

It's rich, and it's on the way to most things. But the governing of it seems to be cursed as no one can rule it for long. And it burnt down once.

Valyria = Detroit, MI

Due to its fearsome beasts with great abilities to travel, this was once the center of the world and a shining jewel of civilization. But then a cataclysmic event rendered it a smoldering ruin of its former glory. The only thing that endures is a bit of their ancient music. And the secrets of manufacturing things there have long been forgotten.

Dorn = Napa Valley, CA

Remote area known for women, wine, and boringness.

The Dreadfort = North Dakota

A stronghold of the north but nowhere near as important as the center of the region. And unless you're from here, living here is torture.

Qarth = Savannah, GA

A wealthy port city, the inhabitants think that it's the greatest city that ever was or will be, and yet no one outside the city cares. Filled with many rich creepy people.

The Twins = West Virginia

A location that would be pointless were it not a river crossing en route to other, better places. It's filled with homely women with the occasional hot one sprinkled in. Also, weddings here can get out of hand.

Lys = Atlantic City, NJ

There are two main characteristics: it's surrounded by rough sea, and it's known far and wide for its pleasure houses.

High Garden = Berkeley, CA

In the far reaches of the realm, it is known as a flowery place with lax sexual attitudes. Also a garden of high.

Volantis = Santa Barbara, CA

A rich, old coastal village where the slaves aren't allowed to ever touch the nobility.

Storm's End = San Francisco, CA

A coastal city with a mighty fortress on the Bay. And it's gay friendly.

Yunkai = Reno, NV

A desert town that is known for its sex slaves and incompetent defenses.

Dothrak = Texas

Incorrectly thinks it's an independent country just because everyone there has weapons. Meanwhile most people who live in the capitol are unaware that this is a place.

Vaes Dothrak = Austin, TX

The cultural center of a vast wasteland, where the barbaric activities of the surrounding areas are banned within city walls. Full of people who struck out on their own because they hate their parents.

Red Waste = West Texas___

Trolling doesn't pay, or hopefully not

It's nice to see this happen. Company created just to sue people for "patent" infringement is forced to pay the court fees of the winner, the company they'd originally sued. While this doesn't really fix the overall patent issue, it's at least nice to see that there's some precedent for making the trolls pay. I would like to think that this is going to make more companies fight back, and patent trolls think twice before suing someone.

Next up: getting people at the US Patent Office to have some technical knowledge and stop issuing terrible patents.

Waste not, want not

I love that people are looking for more local food, but let's not be wasteful about it. Native Americans used almost every part of the animals they hunted. Why can't we use almost every crop that is grown in our fields? Why can't we use the methods that produce better tasting foods?

Inefficiency is terrible; we're using a lot of soil poorly, when some simple changes could make for far better produce. It's not very difficult to do, as it's been done by farmers for hundreds of years. Can this not be applied to large scale farms? Come on America, we can do better than this.

Education

I'm really saddened by the state of education in the USA and the world. It solves so many social problems, from the local to the global levels. It's really our only hope for the future, and it's looking bleaker every day if the USA is any indication.

Throwing money at it won't help; look at what we have now. Standardized testing, teachers teaching to those tests, and a generation of kids who don't know how to think. We teach facts but not skills. If you can't logically arrive at a conclusion given some inputs, what can you do?

Are we doomed to be an outlier, the few centuries where education was powerful, or can we bring it back to its rightful place near the top of our priority list?

We may share the same patch of pavement, but there's a lot that can be done to make life easier for drivers and cyclists. Let's start with the stop.

This data highlights something that drives me crazy. Look at the number of states with some sort of law like this. It's not that many. But the data from those states supports their law, the safety of everyone involved, and it makes sense for bikers in terms of saving energy. You'd think this would be common sense, but no. Politicians are involved.

I'd love to see larger sites do this for the general .gov block. Might be that if Google weren't very fast, the government might put some pressure on the FCC to do the right thing rather than the corporate-backed thing.

A New Constitutional Convention

Vermont has passed a resolution that is calling for a new amendment to the Constitution. The end goal is to take money out of politics, especially as cash has taken a huge jump since the Citizens United decision. Ten other states are considering similar resolutions; while this is far short of the necessary 38 (to amend the Constitution), it's nice to see this being discussed.

A convention would likely have a lot unintended consequences, assuming it even happens. I can't say as I think it will succeed, but if it starts people talking and pushing for change, it's going to help. It's pretty obvious we need to do something.

Religious freedom is under attack in the USA, and it's by the social conservatives.

I really hope that this works, because it's a brilliant bit of legal turnabout. This should apply to all states if it works, and could be a great way to wipe out codified bigotry against same-sex marriage.

Truth to power

Oliver: No, the target is not the American people, but it seems that too often you miss the target and hit the person next to them going 'Whoa, him!'

Alexander: You see, we're not just out there gathering information, listening to their phone calls, or collecting their emails. But, that's the first thing that people jump to.

Oliver: But you are out there doing that. You're just saying that you're not then reading them. You are gathering that data.

Comedians have always spoken truth to power, and for hundreds of years it was a fine line between a laugh and death. You'd think that in a society with free speech as a right, this wouldn't be a big deal anymore. Yet here we are, with a press that doesn't bother with their duty, and comedians who provide a look and a laugh at the state of... more »

Corporate bullshit

Like a facebook page? Visit a website? Want to sue them in court? You're out of luck, if GM gets its way.

This is just patently ridiculous. I'm not sure it would hold up in court since it's incredibly broad, but it's there until someone challenges it. If this happens, I foresee the use of a lot of proxies just to do your daily corporate website surfing.

It's come to the point where satire, rather than being funny, is just sad.

This isn't because it's poorly written; far from it, in fact. It's sad because it's true.

Using public transit properly, or: How not to be an ass when you're on the train

This goes for any city. In Boston, I notice it way more on weekends when tourists come in from their non-public transit areas. Even in non-commuting hours, this is all too common. In Germany, they have lines painted onto the platform to direct you. Of course, this only works if your train doors always line up, which isn't the case for many city trains.

I can think of plenty of other train tips, but this one gets me. >:O

This is important

If you haven't changed your passwords in the past few days, do so. Check this list for sites that you definitely need to change it for. Security patches can only do so much; make sure you're not running unsafely.

It might also be a good time to start using a password application like LastPass or KeePass.

What does your bookshelf say about you?

This is fascinating. I'd never really considered this to be snooping since the books are on display, but it's not just the books. You're snooping in someone's mind. You're snooping on how they think, what they enjoy, and their views.

What do your books say about you? What do you think about friends and acquaintances when you see their bookshelves (or lack thereof)? Where are your  bookshelves and what does that mean?

I have a nice six foot tall bookshelf right next to my couch. It's got pretty open sides so you can see into it from anywhere in the room. I like that colors show through it, rather than being closed off like so many bookshelves are. I also have a small collection of cookbooks in the kitchen and a book or three on my nightstand.

What happens to boys in the process of growing up? Why do feelings get pushed by the way side? How can this trend be slowed, or can it? It certainly seems like it's now very deeply ingrained into the world no matter where you are.
