As a tribute to MAY DAY MOCAtv presents The Buckingham Warrior, a tale inspired by +Gary Baseman's father who survived the holocaust, fighting the Nazi invasion in Ukraine's birch tree forests for almost 4 years. Baseman and Director David Charles transformed his father's harsh reality into a whimsical story of survival and hope, which was animated by Peter Markowski and scored by South-African duo Die Antwoord. http://bit.ly/MOCAtvGBTrailer

Morgan Fisher’s “Phi Phenomenon” from 1968 presents an ordinary clock shot at regular speed for the duration of a 1200 ft. roll of film. Most films are representational, but ”Phi Phenomenon”, rather than representing a clock, actually becomes one upon projection; however, instead of “telling time,” it enacts it.

Here’s an interview with Morgan Fischer, as well as info about Los Angeles Filmforum at MOCA’s upcoming program, “Time as Material”, happening this Thursday, May 9. http://bit.ly/MOCATimeMaterial

“What Was Contemporary Art” is a book by Richard Meyer that looks at connections between the art of today and works made at points further back in history. In this video, Meyer encourages anyone with an interest in art to NOT look at everything, but to slow down and look carefully at a few things, thinking about the relationships between the art you see and the contemporary moment that you live in now. http://bit.ly/MOCAtvMeyer

Commissioned by MOCA, this site-specific work by RETNA employs his sophisticated system of writing that references hieroglyphs, calligraphy, and illuminated script. Drawing on Egyptian, Arabic, Hebrew, Old English, East Asian, and Native American typographies, RETNA has crafted his own lexicon and visual vocabulary that speaks to larger world histories and the commonalties found across cultures. As most viewers will be unable to decipher the language, the artist has provided us with a translation, here at The Curve: http://bitly.com/MOCARetna

Our Global Street Art series continues today with an insight into the thriving scene in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, and one of the largest cities in the world. We follow artists Medialegal and Bujangan Urban. Medialegal started as a punk group, which subsequently led to making art under the same moniker. Bujangan Urban has been drawing on walls since he was a child. Once he met friends that were part of the "artcoholics" crew, he fully embraced his status as a street artist. http://bit.ly/MOCAtvJakarta

In 1965, Sol LeWitt wrote fellow sculptor Eva Hesse a four-page letter of encouragement, urging her to stop doubting herself and to simply continue making her work. Producer Aaron Rose (Beautiful Losers, Become a Microscope) worked with punk rock band Rancid to remake LeWitt's words into a bold and boisterous song. With wild and wavy LeWitt-inspired animation, this video energetically embodies the message of its writer. bitly.com/MOCAtvRancid

A twisted take on the real, Urs Fischer’s work unabashedly declares its affiliation to such art historical movements as Pop, Surrealism, and Dada, all of which similarly toyed with the found image to create new and unanticipated combinations, shifts of scale, and a sometimes violent collision of visual information.
