Well, not only were more women added as a result of our discussions (Thanks, Google!) but we put together a list or YOUR recommendations for your favorite ladies of science. These women do science, teach science, talk about science, or just plain LOVE science, and they share it with all of us here on Google+. Still missing you or one of your favorites? Fraser Cain136,858Super Science Circle - August 2012 EditionIt's time again for the latest edition of my Super Science Circle. If your stream is stale, import this shared circle and never want for knowledge again. And if anyone ever tells you Google+ is a ghost town, point them at this circle and demand they import it.Please reshare this list, to help it spread wide and far. Do it! For Science! If you're interested in my criteria, the circle contains:1. People active on Google+2. People who often post about science.I highly recommend that you import these people into a test circle and then evaluate them over the next month. Move over the people who really delight you to a more permanent circle. Then replace the test circle next month, when I share it again. If you know anyone who should be included in this list, please let me know. #sciencesunday   #evang+  2012-08-20 19:42:04434170414583CC G+

Chris Robinson24,784General Science Circle- Final UpdateLast August I started this General Science Database (http://goo.gl/tp06X), which could be uploaded into Google+ using the import contacts feature. Over the last year, the database has morphed into a shared circle and more recently into +Science on Google+: A Public Database. Due to the increasing overlap with the +Science on Google+: A Public Database, this will be the last time that I will be updating and sharing this circle. If you are a scientist, science teacher, or science writer, please feel free to add your profile/page to the +Science on Google+: A Public Database by filling out this form (http://goo.gl/yEg7M) and circling +Science on Google+: A Public Database. 2012-07-25 14:47:31300101339CC G+

Fraser Cain125,463Super Science Circle - July 2012 EditionHi everyone, it's time for the July 2012 Edition of my super science circle - and for #sciencesunday . If you're interested in sciency posts from interesting and active people, import this circle and you'll have a delightful stream. Please share this circle... for Science!I've added a handful of people, removed a few, and generally cleaned things up.I'm always looking for more people to add to this circle. People who:1. Are active, posting at least a couple of times a week. But not too active to overwhelm the stream.2. Post regularly about science. Not exclusively, but regularly. If you think you should be in this circle, just post your info in the comments below. As always, I recommend that you import these people into a temporary circle and try them on for size. Only move people to your permanent circles if you want to keep following them. 2012-07-08 20:59:084165476124CC G+

Fraser Cain120,480Super Science Circle - June 2012 editionPlease reshare this circle... for Science!Just in time for summer reading, I offer you the latest edition of my Super Science Circle. This list contains almost 400 users of Google+ who are active and post science topics. I have personally evaluated everyone in this list, and made sure they meet my exacting criteria - I think you'll find they're a fantastic addition to any circle collection. As always, I suggest that you import these people into a fresh circle. Then evaluate them for a bit. Move your favorites over to more permanent circles. And I'm always looking for people to add to the list. If you post to Google+ at least a few times a week, and include a lot of science-oriented posts, please let me know and I'll add you for the future.P.S. I was really glad to find that very few people had gone inactive this time around. People are really getting active and engaged - definitely not a ghost town.P.P.S. A big thanks to +Science on Google+: A Public Database for gathering together a large number of science-oriented people. I was able to add about 100 people to my list.2012-06-16 01:22:0239664130109CC G+

Arvid Bux25,492Curated circle with English profilesFor my upcoming eBook release, I have curated several circles. Lane Greer0Thought I'd share a circle with you that I love. It's my inbound News circle. I check this every day to get up to the minute info about current events. Everyone in this circle is either a G+ page representing a News focused organization or people that work in association with a News focused organization. The information posted on this stream is so exhaustive that i don't even read News sites anymore. I took careful care to make sure that Liberal and Conservative views are equally represented in this circle.2012-04-10 16:26:0448000CC G+
Mike Clancy3,675By far my largest (and favorite) circle, this is a great list of engaged science & technology lovers. As with my sci-fi circle, +1 this if you would like to be added to the circle, share it if you're already in it and want your own circles to grow.2012-04-05 16:33:35460101733CC G+

It's filled with working scientists, journalists, science enthusiasts, even an astronaut! As always, I recommend you import these people into a brand new temporary circle, then move individuals over that you like. Or, wait for me to reshare the circle in a month or so to get an update. If you want to be in the circle, I'm looking for people who are:1. Active, posting on Google+ at least a few times a week.2. Fraser Cain34,996Super Science Circle - March, 2012Here's the most recent version of my Super Science Circle. As always, I examined every member of the circle to ensure that they're active and sciency. Please share this circle... for science!Sadly, about 30 people were removed this time around. However, I've moved them to a special "Inactive" circle, which I'll look through every time I prepare to share the main Science Circle, and incorporate anyone back in who has become active again.I've also decided to only include personal profiles in the science circle, and removed all the brand pages. I have no problem with brand pages, I just found there was a lot of overlap. This circle is about people.I'm going to be curating a second Science Brands circle, which will contain all those brands, which I'll share separately, so if you have a science-related brand page, please let me know. If you want to be a member of the Super Science Circle, I have only three requirements:1. You're a personal profile, not a brand page.2. You have been fairly active on Google+ over the last month. 3. Some of your posts are scientific in nature. If you want to be in the circle, just reply down in the comments, or get my attention somehow. As always, I recommend you import this circle into a new, temporary circle. Then review the people at your leisure. You can then delete that circle when I update.2012-03-19 18:01:342208710176CC G+

Blizzard in a Blizzard Day is a Minnesota holiday in which we celebrate the first big snowfall by walking through snow to the nearest ice cream shop, stopping along the way to help people get their cars unstuck. It honors kindness to your fellow humans and the joy of comic irony. Today is an almost picture perfect Blizzard in a Blizzard Day. Happy holidays!

Before the Lights Go Out is now officially published!

If you're in Boston, come see me talk about energy, the book, and my work at +Boing Boing. The talk is this afternoon at 4:00 pm. http://maseeh.mit.edu/expressions/

Before the Lights Go Out is my new book about the future of energy. But it's not your usual, boring book about hippies. Instead, the book makes energy relatable. I'm fascinated by our our electric infrastructure works, where it came from, and how it influences what we can and can't do to solve our energy crises. My goal with this book was to pass that fascination on--to help you understand why I think infrastructure is cool. Because, when you understand that, you'll understand why it's so important, too.

You can read the first chapter of my book for free at maggiekb.com/books

If we can just get every spam bot on... more »

A recipe for food
**************************

First, buy a tub of vegan "cream cheese"
Second, slice a whole onion and carmelize the bejeezus out of it (I also add salt, fresh rosemary, and pepper)
Third, mash the hot carmelized onion into the vegan cheese and blend it all together with a fork
Fourth, let sit in the fridge overnight so that the cream cheese firms back up
Fifth, put the spread on toast or crackers, top with slices of tomato and cucumber.
Sixth, OM NOM NOM

I'm not vegan. This is amazing. And, for some reason, it doesn't work as well with actual cream cheese.

So, I finally gave in to the Minneapolis madness and went biking in winter for the first time. Did about 11 miles altogether (with a break in between) in 16-degree weather. It was, freakishly, kind of pleasant. In fact, the only part of me that was uncomfortable was my hands, because my gloves weren't thick enough. You guys, I hate to tell you this, but the bike hipsters are right.

Anyway, advice if you want to try it: I didn't use a special bike. Just my normal whatever-many gear Trek that I got from the police bike auction a few years ago. I borrowed a lot of gear from my husband, though, and that was pretty damn essential. A pair of long underpants (top and bottom). Cycling overalls. Another shirt. A windbreaker. Big, thick wool socks and winter boots. Gloves. A skullcap. A balaclava over the top of that. And, here's the real important part, goggles. Those goggles are what made... more »

I spent last weekend in the depths of the Harvard Forest, one of the most-studied forests on Earth. All this week, I'll be posting photos and videos from the trip to +Boing Boing, showing you what scientific research in a forest looks like, and what kinds of questions the researchers are studying.

Today's dispatch from Harvard Forest: How scientists collect samples of 6,000-year-old mud from the bottom of a swamp. Bonus: A video of me struggling mightily with the core sampling tool.

Back from a hard day's work in the Harvard Forest, much of it spent on hands and knees, measuring plants w/ calipers.
I am pleased to report that I am only slightly sunburned and have not yet found any ticks.

Photos to come. Expect to see, in no particular order: Moose "evidence", wooly agelid egg sacks, forest.

Tell you what, though, if you spend one day collecting data in the field, you will find a new respect for all the hard work that goes into the "Methods" section of a research paper.

I'm especially excited about the event on May 30th. It's a panel on decentralized energy. I'll be talking, so will Chris Hackett of the Science Channel's "Stuck with Hackett"! We'll talk about smaller scale power, DIY power, and (with the help of Susan Covino, who works for an organization that manages the flow of electricity on the grid) we'll talk about what it's going to take to make smaller-scale power work with our current infrastructure. Great stuff!

Yesterday, I got to talk two people who have been heroes of mine since I was very small. Meave and Richard Leakey are two of the most famous paleoanthropologists in the world. Today, we've got my interview with them up at +Boing Boing. http://boingboing.net/2012/05/15/bones-of-turkana-meave-and-ri.html

"I had dropped out of high school and didn’t have any credentials except my experience. I knew that to go any further in my career I'd either have to go to university or I’d need a to find a really good site and build team around me." - Richard Leakey on the discovery of his site at Kenya's Lake Turkana.

"We do find more skulls than you’d expect. I think it has to do with the size of the brain. Maybe it's because carnivores couldn’t get their mouths around the skull and crunch it up, because the brain was sobig.&qu... more »

In this guest post at BoingBoing, the New York Times' Charles Duhigg writes about a woman who lost millions through compulsive gambling. When her lawyer tried to blame it on addiction, the case went all the way to the Supreme Court.

It sounds like it's an open and shut case, but the science of how habits form is really surprising ... and it affects whether we can, really, hold this woman responsible for her actions.

Can you actually control your habits? Or are they totally in control of you? Read Charles' story and find out!

Why does electric infrastructure affect our ability to make energy more sustainable? How is the electric grid like a lazy river at the water park?
And why should you never, ever go fishing with a salesman?

Learn the answers to these questions--and more--when I speak at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on Monday, March 12.

My presentation starts at 3:00 pm in room 355 of the Mechanical Engineering Building. It's free, and open to the public.

(Can't make it to the speech? You can also find out the answers to these questions by reading my book, Before the Lights Go Out.)
