KQED SCIENCE404,067Join +KQED SCIENCE for a Hangout On Air round table discussion about genetically engineered food in advance of QUEST Northern California’s television premiere of its new half-hour documentary, _Next Meal: Engineering Food_ on Wednesday, May 8, at 7:30pm on +KQED 9. Our discussion will begin at 11AM PST (19:00 GMT). Special guests include, _Next Meal_ producer +Gabriela Quirós, biologist UC Berkeley's +Peggy Lemaux  and UC Davis biologist +Ed Blumwald. Dr. Lemaux is genetically engineering sorghum to make it more easily digestible. Sorghum, a cereal related to corn, is a staple food for 300 million people in Africa. Dr. Blumwald is genetically engineering rice to be drought-tolerant. _Next Meal_ explores how genetically engineered crops are made, their pros and cons, and what the future holds for research and regulations such as labeling in the wake of Proposition 37. Proposition 37 would have required foods containing genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled in California. The measure narrowly lost at the ballot box last November where it received 49 percent of the vote.  Are the benefits of genetically engineered food worth the risks?  Join the discussion and find out! We'll be taking your questions from this event page and will try and answer as many as we can during our Hangout. What’s in Your Next Meal? Milo Minderbinder Yiannoupolos' defense of pedophilia (how "inter-generational relationships" are often crucial to the development of young people, especially among gay men, and it just goes on from there into a sort of NAMBLA manifesto) has gotten him disinvited from CPAC and his book deal cancelled.

Twitter is currently a mass of people saying "I was fine with him before, but this is too much!," of people replying on the lines of "wait, you were fine with the doxxing of trans students, and the abuse campaigns against game developers, and all the racist and violent speech, but this you're not OK with?," and a lot of other people (myself included) just shaking our heads and saying "OK, apparently this is what it takes... more »

Vitamin D protects against colds and flu, finds major global study

Vitamin D supplements protect against acute respiratory infections including colds and flu, according to a study led by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The study provides the most robust evidence yet that vitamin D has benefits beyond bone and muscle health, and could have major implications for public health policy, including the fortification of foods with vitamin D to tackle high levels of deficiency in the UK. The results, published in the BMJ, are based on a new analysis of raw data from around 11,000 participants in 25 clinical trials conducted in 14 countries including the UK, USA, Japan, India, Afghanistan, Belgium, Italy, Australia and Canada. Individually, these trials yielded conflicting results, with some reporting that vitamin D protected against respiratory infections, and others showing no effect. Lead researcher Professor Adrian Martineau from QMUL said: "This major collaborative research effort has yielded the first definitive evidence that vitamin D really does protect against respiratory infections. Our analysis of pooled raw data from each of the 10,933 trial participants allowed us to address the thorny question of why vitamin D 'worked' in some trials, but not in others. "The bottom line is that the protective effects of vitamin D supplementation are strongest in those who have the lowest vitamin D levels, and when supplementation is given daily or weekly rather than in more widely spaced doses.___

I've seen lab technicians be treated like slaves just so the so called geniuses could provide material for that prestigious paper. It was one of the reasons I didn't go for that PhD.

If you thought you voted out the swamp, big $$, corporatocracies and all that shit with 45, well, you're wrong.

Big corporations that injure, cheat, defraud, violate and otherwise harm people, do not want to be held accountable in court. It’s pretty simple. But consumer, civil rights, environmental, labor, legal, and a range of other public interest organizations are pushing back. They represent the public’s strong belief that large companies would cut corner and risk the public’s safety and economic security if corporate liability and accountability were weakened, as each of these bill would do.

GOP is sucking at the Koch teat.

This is not new, but considering the crap going on in the WH, I think it's worth a read. Here's a quote:

One of the most powerful tools the Kremlin has in its secret arsenal of Special War is provocation, what they call provokatsiya. While Moscow cannot claim to have invented this technique, which has existed as long as there have been secret services, there’s no doubt that Russians have perfected the art and taken it to a whole new level of sophistication and deviousness. At times, it can become a strategy all on its own (not always, mind you, with edifying results).

Provokatsiya simply means taking control of your enemies in secret and encouraging them to do things that discredit them and help you. You plant your own agents provocateurs and flip legitimate activists, turning them to your side. When you’re dealing with extremists to start with, getting them to do crazy,sel... more »

At times, it can become a strategy all on its own (not always, mind you, with edifying results).

Provokatsiya simply means taking control of your enemies in secret and encouraging them to do things that discredit them and help you. You plant your own agents provocateurs and flip legitimate activists, turning them to your side. When you’re dealing with extremists to start with, getting them to do crazy, self-defeating things isn’t often difficult. In some cases, you simply create extremists and terrorists where they don’t exist. This is causing problems in order to solve them, and since the Tsarist period, Russian intelligence has been known to do just that.___

hmmmm how much would it cost to fully fund planned parenthood for 4 years?

Defend Planned Parenthood

Status: ONGOING

CONTACTS

The Congressional switchboard number is: 202-224-3121
You'll be prompted as follows:
- Press 1 to contact your Senators, 2 to contact your Representative (in the House)
- Enter your 5-digit Zip code (or speak your state name in the case of Senators)
- For your Representative, only 1 choice will be offered - press 1.
- For your Senators, select 1 or 2 to be connected to whichever one you want to contact. (If you're trying to communicate your opinion about a vote, you'll probably want to call back and select the other as well.)

There are toll free numbers for
SENATE: 1-866-985-2543
HOUSE: 1-866-948-8977
that behave the same way as verified by another caller. In the case of the Senate number, you will be patched through to your senior senator on the first call and then on the second call to your junior senator.

TALKING POINTS

* Planned Parenthood provides a wide array of healthcare services for women, including contraception, prenatal care, pregnancy tests, breast cancer screening and so on.
* Closing PP clinics frequently means NO health care clinics available for many poor women. This becomes a taxpayer cost when they land indigent in local emergency rooms.
* Most of PP federal monies come from reimbursement through the medicare program.
* The Hyde Amendment already prohibits federal monies used toward abortion.
* Of PP's budget, 3% goes toward abortion (again, none of which is federally funded). So cutting PP funding will mostly eliminate OTHER vital services, NOT abortion at all.
* Multiple national polls show strong support for PP
* Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) and Dean Heller (R-Nevada) may be vulnerable in upcoming elections. If they are your senators, definitely point this out.

Planned Parenthood made the following observation, which I think is quite true:
“Defunding” Planned Parenthood is a misnomer. Their true intent is to block millions of people who rely on Medicaid from PP health centers. <https://twitter.com/PPact/status/817083691906244608>

You may be put on hold for a bit, but eventually you should be connected with a staffer and be able to speak your piece. Remember, BE POLITE as these folks are probably being overwhelmed with calls.

I recommend writing down what you want to say before calling. Having at least a list of the points you want to mention will help make the call go smoothly and efficiently. And, again, BE POLITE.

ISSUE

Congressional Republicans have tried for years to zero out all federal funding for Planned Parenthood because the group provides abortion services. The issue helped trigger a 16-day government shutdown in 2013, and Democrats and President Barack Obama insisted any provision targeting the group be removed from a bill to fund federal agencies.

Another effort to defund the group will spur another high-profile clash and could be a tough vote for some moderate Republicans such as Maine Sen. Susan Collins and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who has opposed past efforts.

The vast majority of federal money that Planned Parenthood does receive funds preventive health care, birth control, pregnancy tests, breast cancer screening and other womens health care services. Democrats also point out that much of the money the group received is through the Medicaid program, which reimburses health care clinics that provide care to those covered by the federal program.

Under the "Hyde amendment" that is attached to annual funding bills, no federal money is allowed to go to programs that include abortion services, unless they are needed to preserve the life of the mother or are caused by rape.

Democrats immediately denounced the news that Republicans again were working to bar future federal funds for Planned Parenthood.
"This is a priority for the Republicans," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday afternoon. "So I just would like to speak individually to women across America: this is about respect for you, for your judgment about your personal decisions in terms of your reproductive needs, the size and timing of your family or the rest, not to be determined by the insurance company or by the Republican ideological right-wing caucus in the House of Representatives. So this is a very important occasion where we're pointing out very specifically what repeal of the (Affordable Care Act) will mean to woman."

And we dont protect the country from threats of violence even when the person admits it a campaign of terrorism .. sigh

Then the agents showed him one of those threatening emails. The man said he had created a new email account specifically for the purpose of sending threats to Gamergate targets. He "admitted to sending the threatening email," the FBI wrote in its report, and he "understood the email 'looked really bad.'" Crucially, he also confessed that he knew it was a crime: The man "understood that it was a federal crime to send a threatening communication to anyone and will never do it again," the FBI wrote.

Gunkel also told the Lebanon Daily News that, before they were served food, an employee directed the n-word at Bugg, Jr. and demanded that they leave.

Under Pennsylvania’s state code, ethnic intimidation is not a crime unless another crime occurred, such as harassment or assault. Bugg, Sr. said that if Behney could call someone a racial slur and deny them service without violating criminal law, then the law is an example of "institutional racism" and needs to be changed.

“If that’s not a violation of law, then, wow. That’s the time we live in in 2017, and that’s what’s going to be allowed in Annville, Pennsylvania? I don’t think so,” he said.

Bugg, Sr. said he is not assuming that Dugan did not do his job correctly. But “I want justice,” he said.
