Barrington Street in downtown 1940s Halifax is the setting for a key scene in my Sara's Year novel. Pay particular attention to the Capitol Theatre marquee in the center background...and watch for more images of that movie palace, also critical to the story, in the next days.

"The Muses are the personifications of the energies of that unconscious system that you touch when you sit down as a writer. You just have to find them. When I'm writing, there are two ways that I write. One is badly, and the other is well. And when it's badly it's dictated from up here, and that's the stuff that goes into the scrap basket. There's often a period of trial, pushing around to see where I can get that trapdoor to open. And when I hit it, it's almost––physical––the feeling of opening a door, holding it open, not giving a damn for the critics, what they are going to say or think. . . . It's an actual experience, nothing mysterious about it. If you have never hit that level, well, then it's mysterious. But if you have, it's not."
– Joseph Campbell, interviewed in The Bloomsbury Review, December 5, 1983

Celebrating the great contralto Maureen Forrester, born this day in 1930. I had the privilege of interviewing Forrester back in the mid-1980s, after she had been named chair of the Canada Council (the nearest U.S. equivalents would be the National Endowment for the Arts). I found her to be more than a great talent. She was warm, personable and engaging, as well as a fierce advocate for the arts. Forrester died in June 2010 at 79.

I was inspired to create this when I came across a meme here on G+ that suggested we "write without fear" but "edit without mercy." While I  agree with the first sentence, I take issue with the second...which is why all my books for writers talk about "heartful revision."

It's been many, many months since I've pulled a tarot card for myself. But a strangely synchronistic reconnection with a tarot-reading friend I had lost touch with in 1998 and who died too young a few years ago, prompted me to pull a card this morning: "In a reading this card [The World] is highly auspicious. It means that the project you've been working on will receive the highest acclaim. ... Strangely – or, perhaps, appropriately, given the card – this "reconnection" occurred here on Facebook as a result of a research request I put out regarding my Sara's Year novel-in-progress. One of the replies came from a man I didn't know; it turned out he was my old friend's partner when he died in 2012. Curiouser and curiouser, as Alicewou... more »

"Some critics of the SCOTUS [marriage equality] decision point to Canada as a warning sign of the kinds of limits on religious freedom and freedom of expression to come. As a Canadian, a lawyer, an LGBT ally, and a Mormon, I confirm that both religious freedom and freedom of expression are alive and well in Canada."

For those of you who have expressed impatient eagerness to get your hands on my Sara's Year novel, I have a teaser for you. My friends at +Bublish, the site that hosts all my book excerpts, have made it possible to post tidbits from works-in-progress to the site, so I have added Sara's Year to my existing page there. Check it out at https://www.bublish.com/author/view/5354?share=fb!

Meantime, work on Sara's Year continues, and I hope to be done with this second draft of the novel by the end of the weekend.

Note, too, the updated book cover. It's a fresh edit by Kathleen Messmer of the original Jean Gagnon shot.

My Open Letter to Those Who Think Gay Youth Deserve to be Bullied

Okay, so you don't believe in marriage equality or equal rights for gays and lesbians. At least the men and women you're denying rights to are adults and have tools and resources at their disposal to fight back.

But when it comes to kids, aren't we responsible for doing our best to keep them safe – and alive – until such time as they can take care of themselves?

Apparently, 45 Republican senators don't think so. Those are the Republicans who today refused LGBT youth the same protections from being bullied as other minority children have. In a vote, largely along party lines, the Senate turned down Al Franken's proposed amendment to the No Child Left Behind Act.

The amendment would have guaranteed LGBT kids the same legal remedies available to other kids under U.S. federal civil rights laws.

“If a black child was referred to by a racial slur at school, would we say kids will be kids?" Sen. Franken asked his colleagues. “If a Jewish student got beat up because he wore a yarmulke to school, would we wave it off and say boys will be boys? If a shop teacher told a female student she didn’t belong in his class, would we be fine if the school just looked the other way? No, we would not. In fact, there are federal civil rights laws that are specifically designed to stop this kind of conduct.”

Even with all the advances in human rights protections for gays and lesbians, LGBT youth are up to five times more likely than their peers to take their own lives, often because the have been bullied, denigrated and treated as less than human. Since when is that acceptable in a civilized society?

These are your kids, who are being beaten up. These are your kids who are committing suicide. Perhaps it's time you started paying attention. Perhaps it's time you started caring.

“By seventh grade, taunts and verbal abuse were a constant part of Seth Walsh’s day,” Franken told his fellow Senators. “Students called him faggot and queer. He was afraid to use the restroom or to be in the boys’ locker room before gym class. And in September of 2010, Seth hanged himself from a tree in his family’s backyard. He was 13.”

(Thanks to David Badash and The New Civil Rights Movement for the article that inspired this post. Read it at http://bit.ly/1K68b75 and see if your senator is one of the ones who thinks it's okay for your kids to be treated this way.)

Wondering how long to make your novel? According to Amazon, the median word count for a novel is 64,531 (Brave New World), which means that 50% of all novels it tallied have more words and 50% have fewer.

On the lighter side (length, not content), George Orwell's Animal Farm clocks in at 29,966 and Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome at 30,191. But when it comes to weightier tomes, nothing can out-count War & Peace at a staggering 544,406 words.

While the current definition of a novel is anything over 40,000 words, agents warn that traditional publishers are looking for considerably more heft (but not too much)...something closer to the Brave New World median.

Find out how some of your favorite classic measure up in this fun blog post from Publishers Weekly – http://bit.ly/1K5zoH8.
