Abigail Markov49,671Beauty of Encaustics...the art of painting with pigmented wax, a collection of works by Abigail M Markov! Ok guys, this is my first solo show! I wish you all could be there in person, as I wouldn't be where I am without your support and encouragement from all around the world! So, since I can't fly you all out here, I'm working with the gallery owner and we're going to host a HOA for the duration of the opening!  Stop on in, say hi, ask questions, and come see some of the latest work! NASA3,045,106Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008295
Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych465,868It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00160

Jacob Dix1For some time now I have been doing a project, an experiment, an exploration, a study in light. My object has been the sky, through the limited vantage point of my kitchen window and my backyard. The result, so far, is this album called *Sky*: http://goo.gl/phGuR Forget about that for right now. Show everyone your own sky! The best, the worst. I've seen people mention avoiding it because it means they have no "object" to shoot. Don't listen to those people. It is the most challenging palette of light there is. Let's see 'em! You have a full day and a half! Please spread the word too.Sky!2012-09-02 00:00:0023

finale

it's been a while since i was really active here. if you've followed me you know i haven't posted much over the past few years. 2013 was my high water mark. little by little i lost connection with this place, with the person i used to be when most prolific here, sharing work and thoughts.

these days i don't care for writing farewell posts. usually i find they're written with bad intentions, or get bad results. but in honor of how big this place has been in my life i wanted to take a minute to say goodbye.

to everyone i met here since 2011, thank you. knowing you has enriched my life, and i hope you find peace and prosperity in all your ventures. some of you i wish i could have said goodbye to in a better way, but the chance for that has passed. i'll always think of our times together fondly.

there isn't another site i'm moving to, i'm not going to continue to use social media as a personal brand. i'll be working on some book projects that i may release publicly at a later date. i'll try to keep you in the loop on those releases, if you follow up with me and let me know that's something you want to hear about.

anyway, i said if i ever left that i'd leave a forwarding address, so i'll keep updated contact info in my bio. i may still stop by once in a while and see what's going on, but this will be my last public post.

goodbye, my friends. go in peace.

i hope to see you again, somewhere out there.

traversal.

it's risky and dangerous traversing trans-dimensional space. you never know what you'll be able to take with you. in traveling between universes, it's common that nothing will look or seem all that different. you have likely changed universes at least once and not even known it. if there ever was a time when all that was familiar became foreign, you have been traveling.

tomorrow.

rolling through late summer fields of grass and clover and flowers. i don't think there was ever any way for you to understand. you saw it all as right here, right now. tomorrow for you was the real tomorrow, the next sunrise. i was far away. a thousand years is tomorrow for me. even if i live a century, i'm just the wink of a firefly on a hot sweaty fragrant night's breeze. the burden of egolessness is stupid, a surrender to oblivion. but there are still the children to think of. someone might need to hear something i might have to say. so i have to keep talking until the fires go out. it's not that i didn't want friends, it's that i have so little time and there's so much to do. don't you see? the sun is setting and this night will be so very short.

what did you want? what did you expect? we put on another mile. what was your objective? who was hurt, who benefitted? i am a liar. you are a liar. we put on another mile. we both breathe the same air. the same sun that shines on you shines on me. in this way we are all connected. we put on another mile. none of this works without you, without me, without the trees, without the sky, without all of us. we put on another mile. yesterday is gone, tomorrow is gone. all is come to dust. there's nothing more to say. just put on another mile.

this took longer to solve than i expected... writing a script to calculate dispersion of energy over an area. in the current iteration it's incredibly slow and inefficient, but produces beautiful results. i'm rewriting the underlying code to optimize for faster rendering.

Making Math from the NYC Subway Real-Time API@NYCTSubway

Erik Bernhardsson has an interesting post on playing with data from NYC’s MTA data feed:

I started tracking all subway trains one day and completely forgot about it. Several weeks later I had a 3GB large data dump full of all the arrivals for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, L, SI and GC (the latter two being Staten Island railway and Grand Central Shuttle).

i have a new tinyletter
http://tinyletter.com/somethingformed

if you're interested in the things i do with art and tech, i go more in-depth with process and tinyletter gives me a chance to get a little more personal about working as a professional creator. the schedule is weekly, planning on a new letter this very evening.

my goal is to turn it into a way to have conversations about creative work and share useful resources. if that sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, i hope you'll join me.

lunacy 2x

the accident here was seeding the world with life form blobs instead of food alga. they spawned like crazy and there's nothing to kill them right now, so they slowly gathered in the upper left, all jiggling and swarming.

more process shots from cellular automata. calling them glitch because they all feature something unintended. still ironing out the bugs in my engine.

wtfmazes

drunk automata suddenly organized and started building cities.

this happened because i was accidentally adding both sets of coordinates together when calculating moves for the blob. suddenly there could be a ton of motion inside these little bounded moore neinghborhoods. the progression is logarithmic i think? not sure what i created here. noting to come back later and play with this more.
