Lotus Carroll1,778,021This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Multiplicity. What this means is create a self portrait where you appear in the image multiple times (2 or more, your choice). Get creative and think up an interesting scene you can use this effect on and then make your image. Here is where you enter your ONE Multiplicity Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST March 31st, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tips & Inspiration* There are several different ways to go about achieving this effect. In camera, you can use a long exposure and move around. Alternately, you can use post processing to create multiples in an image. Photoshop is most widely considered in this type of editing, but other programs can also be used to achieve effect, such as Gimp. For those with no experience with creating "multiplicity" images with post processing, here are a few resources to help you get started: Photoshop Multiplicity Tutorial Videos: http://goo.gl/cyTpyZ Gimp Multiplicity Tutorial Videos: http://goo.gl/hChZ0Q Examples from Flickr: http://goo.gl/os2P65 Other Examples: http://goo.gl/DqlDtR Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. Daria Musk3,833,371*Expand to read the story and learn how to join live!* Three years ago to the day, I stood in front of my computer - a guitar in my hands, songs in my heart, fingers trembling - about to press a button that said, "Hangout". I was still waterlogged with rainy nights of lugging my amps into tiny clubs and tears from the not-knowing-what-would-happen to my dreams. That night, when I hit "Hangout" you saved my dreams, you saved me. Your faces popped in. We sang all night. Six hours later my heart was six million times bigger and I would never be the same. Every year I want to celebrate that day. I want to thank you face to face. I want to meet back at our special place and sing your praises. It's time for Hangoutiversary III.  *PLEASE, BE CELEBRATED* So please, meet me on July 16th. Right here, inside the place where we had our virtual first date. Comment back and let me know that you're planning to come, I will organize special circles of you all, so we can rotate the 10 seats and meet and meet and meet again. I'll sing our songs of celebration. I'll sing new songs of adoration, to you and this crazy world that gives us a chance just when we think maybe it can't. Come with your hopes and your dreams to be amplified and your updates and your friends and families and fantasies. Let's sing 'til our throats go weak and dance in front of computer screens, like the silly beautiful people we know ourselves to be.   *HOW TO HANG* In case you're new or rusty all you have to do to join this Hangout is:   ✪ RSVP a big fat *yes* here. ✪ On Wednesday, July 16th come back to this page when the Hangout starts (6PM Eastern US Time). ✪ You can watch or click "join" to on my page @100974258168375166691! ✪ Don't for get to comment and let me know if you want to join and around what time. I'll be sure to circle you and invite you when you're web-camera-ready! ✪ Come with song requests, stories and even a "dream to amplify". The theme of this hangout is #amplifyyourdreams  cause that's what you guys did for me. You turnt it up to 11! *SRSLY, MESSAGE ME* Send me a private message or chat or comment to me here if you'd like to arrange a special invite or if you're new and want to join the family and need some tips for getting in. I think I'm going to make invite circles for each half hour, so let me know when you want to join. Everyone's invited. It's really the greatest possible gift, just to let me sing for you and get to know you again and again and again.  *SPREAD THE LOVE* Share this invite too. Let's grow the family. Any friend of yours is a friend of mine and deserves some showcased virtual face-to-face time. *XO, Daria* PS. *CONNECTED BY* This concert celebration is being supported by our new friends at CO-OP Connected Credit Unions. ePublish Unum - Education for Authors154,522We admit it--sometimes we focused too much on the latter end of the digital publishing lifecycle. But for many should-be authors, getting past the "why would anyone care what I have to write about?" is a giant hurdle. If you're sitting there filled with self-doubt, you certainly aren't going to start writing, let alone get published. On the next Books & Beer Hangout, +Michael O'Reilly joins us for a lively conversation about this very topic. We'll deal with fears, rewards, tests and motivation to move you past that point and get you started on the path to being a published author. And remember, you can join in for the B&B Hangover at :15 after the hour to get your questions answered live! But you have to be in our circles to get the invite, so do so now! Books & Beer is co-produced and co-hosted by +Evo Terra & +Jeff Moriarty, publishing pioneers and craft beer enthusiasts. We Hangout every Monday, at 6:00 pm PT/9:00 pm ET as a Google Hangout On Air. The Sword And The Goddess

Last week on the evening of the lunar eclipse I went out to the lake to take pictures, and figured it would be nice to arrive a little early to get some pre-sunset pictures. My friend Crystal was kind enough to accompany me to help out with my sword album, and it occurred to her to wear her goddess Halloween costume to add a little flavor to the event. Sure enough, I think her outfit went with the sword pretty well. It was kind of funny with her walking around the park like that, what with all the folks cooking barbecue and playing frisbee and whatnot. The things we do for art! I'm happy she was a good sport about it all, and very pleased with the way this turned out. One more for the collection!

A Math Limerick

Here's a math limerick, something I didn't even know existed, sent to me just a bit a go by a friend who thought I'd appreciate it, which I do. I don't know where this originally came from, so I can't attribute it, but I salute whoever came up with it. Just thought I'd share it with all of you on this pleasant Sunday morning.

Here's Something I've Been Doing

I've been taking a five week beginning acro yoga class, and this was the last week. Each week we learned a different position, and this week we put them all together into this flow, which is called Four-step. This class has been a lot of fun and I plan on continuing to practice acro yoga. Overall if you'd told me five weeks ago that I'd be doing this, I don't know if I would have believed you. I look forward to looking back at this a year from now and seeing how bad I was back at the start, but at the moment I'm pretty proud of this.

Another Year Of Owls

The owlets have now fledged, and unfortunately this year I wasn't able to spot them after they had left the house, so I don't have any pictures of them out in the world. This year has been notably wet, with lots of storms and otherwise rainy evenings, so overall I didn't have as many opportunities to get out and take pictures. Combined with the failure of the owl-cam partway through the process, this has been a fairly light observation year. On the plus side, I'm happy to have seen yet another round of baby owls be born, grow, and leave the nest to make their way in the world. It's always a pleasant experience. (Except when bees invade the house, of course. I hope to avoid that one in the future.) So I leave you all with one more picture from this year, of the last feeding time that I managed to get pictures from.

Mama And Papa Owl Before The Photo Shoot

As near as I can tell the owlets have fledged now, but I'm going to give it a couple more days before I go up the ladder and check the house, just in case. Unfortunately it's easy to miss them doing so, as they're naturally inclined to be hard to spot. On the other hand, I dug around and found one or two more things from the past week or so. This is a short video I took one evening setting up to take pictures of feeding time with the owls. This is my first time uploading a video to a post, so hopefully this works okay. When I did so I got a message that the video was processing and people might not be able to see it right away. I'm waiting a few minutes to hit share, in hopes of it all working then, but if it doesn't you might try again in a little bit. Good luck!

The Owlets Are Growing

It's been raining a lot here, unusually enough, but the other evening I managed to get out in between showers right around feeding time and got to see these two owlets curiously exploring the world outside. They thought my sitting out in front of the owl house was quite the interesting sight and kept pushing each other out of the way to have a look. I sure am happy to have this happen in my back yard each year.

Mama And Papa Owl

This morning my wife spotted Mama Owl sitting in a tree next to the one with the owl house. We went out to take pictures of her, and while doing so noticed that Papa Owl was sitting in the same tree a bit farther back. You can see both of them in the picture below. Apparently the babies are now big enough that there's not room for a parent to hang out in there on a regular basis any more. It's storming here this afternoon, so we're pretty unlikely to get feeding shots this evening, but hopefully tomorrow evening I can manage to get out there and take pictures of the parents feeding the babies.

First Peek!

This morning I went out to feed the chickens and saw something quickly ducking back out of sight in the owl house. I had some suspicion that maybe it hadn't been Mama Owl, so at lunch time when I went to let the chickens out for the afternoon I carefully peeked out first to look at the owl house. Sure enough, one little owlet was in the doorway looking at the world. I grabbed my camera and went out as quietly as I could, and took some shots from the doorway. By the time I managed to get any closer, the owlet had gone inside, but I was able to zoom in on the shot and verify that it was indeed a baby and not Mama. So it's not a great picture, as it's a bit blurry and I had to crop way in, but here's the first sighting from the outside this year. More excitement yet to come!

The Sword And The Smile

This weekend I had the awesome experience of spending a bit of time taking pictures with some folks from Something for Nothing Theater, whose production of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale you should totally go see in June if you're in Austin. While I was there I had the unusual experience of someone asking me about my sword pictures without me bringing it up first. I'm so used to having to explain to people what I'm doing, and that as far as I know I'm not a crazy person, that having someone bring it up first and express interest in being in a sword picture was very exciting. The morning was overcast, and we just managed to beat the rain. I saw this nice wall across the street, which it seemed like an excellent backdrop, and the smile was all Chelsea's.

Morning Watch

Mama Owl has been hanging out in the doorway from morning until mid-afternoon lately. She was intent on watching me, but had to keep one eye closed since the sun was in that direction. Unfortunately the owl house camera has ceased functioning for the past week or so, and I don't want to climb up there and troubleshoot things while the owlets are in there. So we'll just have to wait a bit longer until the babies are ready to start climbing up and looking out the doorway to see them again. I'm looking forward to it!

Enjoying The Pleasant Sword Weather

Last week I got to hang out at this little bar near downtown that was converted from an old house. The front porch is a pleasant little spot to sit just after dusk and enjoy the evening, possibly with a drink, and apparently possibly with a sword. As sometimes happens, this young lady was curious why I had a sword, but she was happy enough to model it for me. I have to imagine that it's a good idea not to do this after too many drinks, so I'm glad it was early in the evening.

Mama Owl On Watch

I came home at lunch and while here I checked on the owl cam. The inside of the house was dark, so I had to turn on night vision, but that also let me know that Mama Owl must be sitting in the doorway. I peeked outside and sure enough, there she was. I snuck just a bit closer to get a clear shot, and she backed into the doorway just a bit, still peeking out. Clearly she's on high alert at the moment.

As an update, having her up out of there gave me a better view of what's going on in the house. It now appears to me that two of the eggs have hatched and there are two still in there. I've identified two owlets moving around, who are now notably larger than the eggs. They are growing fast! I don't know how far apart the eggs can hatch, so I guess it remains to be seen if the other two eggs turn out to be viable. Still, we definitely have two babies... more »

Owlets!

Late this afternoon I noticed Mama Owl up in the doorway of the owl house, so I ran inside to look at the owl house camera, but by the time I got there she was back inside. However, the way she was moving around made me suspicious that something was going on and that perhaps there was hatching under way.

Just now I went out to put the chickens to bed, and saw Mama Owl in the doorway once again, and ran back inside to check again. This time she wasn't back in by the time I got in there, though it's dark in there now so I had to turn on the night vision, which doesn't give us as clear a view. However, there are definitely now three fuzzy little blobs all clustered together in a bit of a wiggling mass, along with one remaining egg. I'm very excited to see the new little owlets, and I hope the fourth egg hatches promptly. Tomorrow in the late morning, when... more »

That's all for now, and hopefully more excitement to follow.___

Owl Update: Playing The Waiting Game

For those of you paying attention, Mama Owl is still in the house sitting on the eggs. No sign of hatching yet, but I'm checking on it every day. The Internet informs me that the incubation period on the eggs is from 27-34 days. My first glimpse of an egg was 24 days ago, and I have no idea how many days before that she laid them, but it really ought to be pretty soon. Anywhere from now to 10 days from now. It's very exciting! We're supposed to have big storms moving through our area for the next couple of days, so hopefully that won't interfere too much with my observing. We shall soon see.

As an aside, I do have a notification circle for owl posts, and if you'd like to be in it just let me know. (And naturally if you're in it and you don't want to be, let me know that, too.)

The Knight And The Sword

I had another rare instance pop up of finding someone to pose with the sword who really looked like they ought to be holding a sword. When I saw this fellow walking along I hurried to catch up with him and ask him if he'd be willing to pose. Happily enough he was, and this is the result. Fortunately the weather was great, too, so it worked out well all around.

A Day At The Races

I had the good fortune to get invited out to watch MotoGP at the Circuit of the Americas track here in Austin today. A friend and I spent the day watching people drive very loud, fast machines around a winding track, often leaning over ridiculously close to the ground. Conveniently it occurred to me to bring my camera to the event, so I have this picture to show you what I'm talking about. I haven't gone through all of them to see if I got any really good shots, but this one is acceptable enough to get the point across.

If you ever get the chance to go watch something like this, I highly recommend doing so at least once for the experience. Do remember to bring earplugs or other hearing protection, though. Noise reduction is not high on the design priority when they are building these bikes.

Four Eggs!

Mama Owl has been uncooperative, or I've been unlucky in my choice of viewing times, so I hadn't yet been able to tell how many eggs we have in the owl house this year. The other evening, though, I walked out just after dusk and happened to see her in the doorway of the house so I rushed back in and pulled up the owl cam only to find she had already gone back in and was covering the eggs again. So this evening when it got close to dusk I pulled up the owl cam and waited. It took a while, but finally for a couple of brief moments Mama Owl got up and climbed to the doorway. Her tail still obscured the eggs, but as it moved around I thought I could count four of them. Finally, as she turned around to go back down I got a brief, clear view of four eggs and managed to get a capture of it. Then she was back down on them and I happily have a picture to share here with you. This... more »

Reflecting On The Sword

Somewhere out there is a picture of me taking a picture of a guy with a sword in a mirror along with a guy taking a picture of me taking a picture of a guy with a sword in a...wait, this could go on and on. As to the guy with the sword, apparently he'd had just enough beers that he thought getting his picture taken with it was a fun thing to do. I mean, not that it takes any alcohol to think that, of course.

Guns Banned At The Republican National Convention: Please Help Correct This Dangerous Situation

The upcoming Republican National Convention, despite being held in the Open Carry state of Ohio, will be in a venue that bills itself as a Gun Free Zone. Owls! The 2016 Edition

After some firmware difficulty with the owl-cam I installed in the new owl house last year, today I got the thing up and running again and was ecstatic to see that we've got a new owl family in the making once again. We didn't know whether the parents survived last year's bee catastrophe, but it looks promising that they did. The camera has gotten a bit skewed in the meantime, so it's not the ideal view, but what you're looking at is a top-down view of Mama Owl with an egg just visible beneath her. No idea yet how many eggs there are, but I'll definitely be checking regularly and will hopefully get a glimpse of them at some point while she's out eating. I mean, if she goes out to eat. I'm not sure if Papa Owl will just bring her food for the duration. I guess this is my chance to find out.

After the shot I posted the other day of the guy being really happy to hold the sword, I figured I'd post a follow-up of how he chose to pose. I think this guy's got a big future in sword couture. :)

Happiness Is A Sword

Just as I finished taking a sword shot at the last event I attended, I noticed a group of three people standing just outside the shot and one of them was antsy enough that he was just about bouncing. One of them said "He's wondering if he could hold the sword" and the guy just nodded and grinned. I let him hold it and he was about the most excited I've ever seen anyone holding it, and certainly the most excited of any adult. (At least one of the little kids in the album was pretty ridiculously excited, and I certainly can't fault that.) So this guy posed with the sword some, and maybe I'll get something out of one of those shots, but really this picture of him when he was first holding it gets across how happy he was just to hold the thing. It's the little things in life that make you happy. :)

Sitting Around With The Sword

Last night I was at a photography event down by SXSW here in Austin, and as I am inclined to do I had my sword in the general vicinity. That turned out to be a good thing, as this nice young lady was sitting around on the stairs and looked like she'd be willing to hold a sword while she did so. Turns out that was the case, and I got this shot out of the deal.

The New Year's Sword

Happy new year, everyone! Turns out I've been doing these shots for the album for about a year now, and I'm still having fun with it. Here's a shot I got at the end of last night's New Year's Eve Party I attended, and I thought it was a pretty good reflection of my state by then. I hope all of you had a great 2015, and that your 2016 is even better!

This Is A Scary Side Of The Future

I am a fan of gamification in general. Sites like DuoLingo and Khan Academy do a good job of keeping me learning by giving me scores and perks to show up and study. Chore Wars helps keep kids doing their tasks around the house. Gamification gives people a nice prompt to do things and keep on track.

This video, however, shows a dark side of gamification. China has implemented a system, Sesame Credit, that gamifies being a good citizen. It's scary as all get out, and you ought to watch the video and be sobered. It's scheduled to be mandatory by 2020, and incentivizes people to not only behave in a way mandated by the State, but to encourage your friends to do so as well, or not associate with them.

This is a bad thing.

A Young Lady's Illustrated Sword Primer

Every young lady's education should involve a bit of swordplay, and here's a fine mother getting her daughter started early. Really, it's never too soon to start, I think. Soon enough she'll be saving the world!

Callie And The Sword

Thursday evening I attended a +Drink and Click™ Austin, Texas event at Fado Irish Pub here in Austin. It may come as no surprise to you that I happened to bring my sword along to the event. While there, this lovely young lady turned out to be willing and happy to participate in my somewhat unusual photography endeavor, and I must say I'm happy with the result. If nothing else, the sword does turn out to be a pretty good conversation starter.

Twenty years ago today this wonderful woman agreed to put up with me, and has done so through life's ups and downs. It's been a great couple of decades, and I'm looking forward to many more to come. Happy anniversary, Meredith! I love you.

The Night Sword

One convenient thing about Halloween is that people dress up in interesting outfits, which works out handy if you like to take pictures of a sword with people in interesting outfits. My son put together this Dark Angel outfit and was kindly willing to let me take a picture of him in it holding the sword. I like the way it all turned out. I hope all of you out there had a wonderful Halloween, too!

The Sunset Sword

I figured I wouldn't get too many complaints if I included one more shot of my friend Crystal in her goddess outfit the evening of the super blood moon eclipse. This was right near the end of the day when the sun was about down and it was starting to get darker, but there was still a lot of nice color in the clouds. The clouds ended up messing with our viewing and photography of the eclipse, but they sure worked out okay for the sunset. I guess you take it as it comes and make the best of what nature throws at you.

The Sword Lady Of The Lake

For those of you wondering where the sword came from, here's a rough artistic reenactment of the event. I took this particular shot with a camera that is not as good as the one I normally use in many respects, but had the significant advantage of being waterproof. So I call this a win. :)

The Blood Moon Sword

Viewing conditions around here last night weren't great for the Super Blood Moon eclipse, what with a thin cloud layer across the sky, so I wasn't able to get any good detail shot of it. I did, however, have a friend and a sword with me, and couldn't pass up the chance to get a shot of all of the above together. Our chosen viewing spot was on a hilltop and I was able to get far enough down the hill to angle the shot up and get both her and the moon in the frame. Overall it's not the most fantastic eclipse shot ever, but I'm happy with it and have yet another shot to add to my collection.

The Sword And The Playboy

If you're going to hang out at an anime convention all day dressed as an anime version of Hugh Hefner, at least there's the benefit of pleasant companionship. I guess random photographers asking you to hold a sword for a picture is a minor added bonus. Fortunately these three were happy to pose for my album, for which I'm thankful as always. :)

One thing about living in Texas, you run into plenty of people who aren't shy about wearing their faith on their sleeve, or the front of their shirt, even. I thought her choice of pose in the setting was pretty appropriate, all things considered. All in all a pretty beautiful place.

The Dad And The Sword

Here's one more from the anime convention. This dad had brought his teenage daughter and her friends to the convention, and then set up in the corner of a lounge to pass the time while they ran around. He grumbled a bit about how his daughter was dressed, but seemed to appreciate that she was enjoying herself. Given all the cosplayers and their impressive outfits, he didn't even seem to think it was all that weird that I wanted to get a picture of him with the sword. I'm glad I got to help him participate at least a little bit in the event!

It's a rare occasion when I run across someone who looks like they really ought to be holding a sword. I mean, technically that's part of the point of this project. That said, at the anime convention I encountered this young lady who really fit right in with the whole mood of the sword. Happily, she agreed to hold the thing for a picture, and I ended up with this to share with you. Enjoy, and I hope you're all having a great weekend!

It was night outside by the time she was done, so I got this shot of her standing in a pool of light surrounded by the darkness. I like it when things work out for a good result.

One Down, One To Go

Another town and one more show. Today we had the fun, excitement, and wistfulness of getting our oldest son situated in his college dorm room. We're proud of him and excited about his accomplishments, but it's a big change and it'll be weird not to have him around at home. Still, he's moving on as kids do, and we're looking forward to seeing all the wonderful things he does in his life. Good luck, son, and make us proud!

The Great Horned Owl

The owls I commonly see and take pictures of in my yard are Eastern Screech Owls. We occasionally hear the hooting of the Great Horned Owl from around the neighborhood at night, but I've never actually caught a glimpse of one before. Yesterday, however, I caught a glimpse and caught a picture to share with you, too.

This isn't actually in my backyard, but in that of my neighbors two doors down. I'd heard there was an owl on top of their playscape a couple of days ago, and yesterday in the early evening they gave me a call to let me know it was back. So I grabbed my camera and hurried on down to have a look. I was worried that the owl would take off when I went out the door, but I lucked out and he stuck around just watching as I took pictures. Somewhat related, my wife mentioned that it's about time for me to build another owl house to replace the one we lost to the bee swarm. We now have a bee bait box to attract a swarm if it happens by, so I'm crossing my fingers that we'll have a good spring with owls this next year.___

Prepping For The Contest

At the anime convention this weekend, I ran across the members of Colony Drop Cosplay making final preparations for the cosplay contest. I liked the way the scene looked touching up makeup in the mirrored fire extinguisher door, and thought it would make a nice picture. I hope you like it, and I'll have lots more to add to the album once I've made it through processing the rest of the day two and three shots. Soon!

The Sword And The Voice

At the anime convention this weekend I happened to run across Anastasia Munoz, a talented theater and voice actor who does a lot of voices you may have heard in many anime series. Through an interesting set of circumstances we determined that she was interested in getting a picture in front of the abandoned mall near the convention venue, and I was interested in getting a picture of her with my sword. Conveniently enough, we were able to combine those interests and came up with this result. This makes me extra happy I went to the convention this weekend!

Anime Overload 2015 Day One

Some of you may recall last year I attended the Anime Overload convention here in Austin and took photos of a bunch of cosplayers. I had a good enough time that I decided to do so again this year!

I really enjoy trying to make sure I get at least one shot of everyone I find in costume, though I assume I miss some. Mainly I want everyone who attended to possibly find their picture in the album, and wouldn't want to disappoint anyone.

So anyway, here's day one of the album.

My Perseid Adventure

If you have Internet access or a view of and general interest in the night sky you may be aware that last night (or early this morning depending on how you look at it) was the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower. I do have Internet access and a general interest in the night sky, and I decided that last night I would get a better view of the sky.

I planned on getting to bed early, and was nearly successful, but circumstances arose to thwart that and I didn't get to sleep quite when I planned. Nevertheless my alarm went of at 12:30 AM and I turned out to be sufficiently motivated that I rolled out of bed, got dressed, and grabbed my camera. My wife woke up sufficiently to tell me that I was both admirable and crazy to wake up at that time, and promptly went back to sleep.

The sky was kind of cloudy over my house, but I'm an optimist so I got in my car and proceeded to drive far enough outside of town to get a relatively dark sky. As I'd suspected, the sky also cleared up outside of town. (It often works out that way, probably due to the heat island effect of the city.)

I saw my first meteor streak while I was still driving, which I thought was a good sign, and sure enough when I parked and got out of the car (and let my eyes adjust) I saw meteors at a rate of maybe one every minute or two. I got busy putting my camera on the tripod, discovered that at some point I apparently took my two flashlights (one white, one red) out of my bag so I needed to use my phone for light, got the stars in focus, and proceed to shoot pictures with no meteors. Lots of pictures with no meteors.

Here's the thing. Meteors happen pretty fast. They go streaking across the sky a lot or a little, but it's all over faster than you can hit the shutter and certainly WAY faster than you can swing a camera around to point in their direction. So the trick to taking their picture is to have the camera already pointed at them with the shutter already open when they happen. Easy, right? Well, there's a lot of sky out there, and even though the meteors all radiated from a general area of the sky they don't actually all start at that point and blaze along in a convenient line from there. One shows up way off to your right, then one way off to your left, and so on randomly all over the place. You point the camera at a piece of sky, set the shutter time to as long as you can without makes the stars look smeared due to the Earth's rotation (in the case of the camera and lens I was using that was 15 seconds) and then just repeatedly take 15 second shots hoping you get something.

I was out there for a couple of hours, took a couple-hundred shots, and came away with three shots with meteor streaks on them. Success! The one I'm including below is actually the shortest streak of the three I caught, but I like the way it looks like it's shooting down from the Andromeda Galaxy between the Cassiopeia and Andromeda constellations. I also saw (but didn't get a shot of) one really impressive one that left a long, bright red streak across a quarter of the sky for about ten seconds. That one would have been a pretty amazing shot if I'd happened to have the camera pointed that way.

I did have a couple of unusual things happen while I was out there. First, are 2 AM a pickup truck came driving down the road and stopped right next to me. The driver was checking to see if I was broken down and apologized when he saw I was set up with the camera and tripod. He asked what I was doing and I told him about the meteors, which he thought was kind of neat, and I thanked him for stopping to check on me. That would've been handy if I had been broken down. The other thing happened about an hour later. I started hearing sounds  of some creature walking down the road toward me in the dark. Not having a flashlight I couldn't tell what it was, and had some concern about it turning out to be a coyote or big dog. I made some noise to let it know I was there, but it kept on coming. This made my adrenaline pick up a little bit and I got ready to do something, though I don't know whether it would have been jumping in the car, jumping up on the car, or grabbing the camera and tripod and performing Kung Fu on whatever it was. Then it got close enough to see in the light from my phone and it turned out to be an armadillo. (For those of you not immediately familiar, I will add that an armadillo is completely not a threat to life or limb, unless perhaps you hug it and get leprosy.)

So in the end I had an enjoyable time, saw a wonderful meteor shower, failed to get any amazing shots of a wonderful meteor shower, had a very minor adventure, and lost a few hours of sleep. I was home again and back to sleep by about 4 AM, and am only a little bit tired today. All in all well worth it!___

The Sword And The Creek

We've reached the hot part of the year here in Texas, so lots of people head to the local creeks on the weekends to have a good time and stay cool. I suppose just in case of giant crawdads or catfish, it's probably a good idea to carry a big sword. You know, just in case...

Something Unusual In The Mailbox

I was home at lunch time and thought to check the mail before returning to work. I can safely say that this is the first time I've ever found EXPLODING KITTENS in the mailbox. I'm looking forward to this evening!

The Liquid Sword

Some bartenders get fancy and flip their bottles and shakers and glasses all around. Others are more sedate and carry a big sword. This fine fellow was nice enough to pose for me and even managed to do his job at the same time.

The Sword And The Chef

I ran across this grill master at the park cooking up burgers for a crowd. Really what could be more useful for grilling than a giant sword? Conveniently, he was a good sport about posing with the sword. People are pretty awesome about being willing to do so, in my experience. Not every time, but far more often than not. I hope all of you are having a great weekend!

The Sword And The Swing

I believe it was Theodore Roosevelt who said "Swing softly, and carry a big sword." Well, I may be paraphrasing. Regardless, I'm sure the Hero of San Juan Hill would approve of this little guy, who was happy to hold the sword while he swung. His dad, who was pushing him, was somewhat dubious about this whole "pictures with a sword" thing but deferred to his wife, who granted her blessing to the operation. I'm happy to have one more happy participant in the sword album. :)

You Shall Not Pass The Sword

Access to the rooftop photography get-together I attended a couple of weeks ago was up this narrow staircase with a high steel fence on both sides. I liked the way all the lines looked in the area, not to mention how defensible it looked, so I decided to see what someone on it with a sword would look like. Pretty good, it turns out.
