Daria Musk3,514,361Expand to read the story and learn how to join live!Three years ago to the day, I stood in front of my computer - a guitar in my hands, songs in my heart, fingers trembling - about to press a button that said, "Hangout". I was still waterlogged with rainy nights of lugging my amps into tiny clubs and tears from the not-knowing-what-would-happen to my dreams. That night, when I hit "Hangout" you saved my dreams, you saved me. Your faces popped in. We sang all night. Six hours later my heart was six million times bigger and I would never be the same. Every year I want to celebrate that day. I want to thank you face to face. I want to meet back at our special place and sing your praises. It's time for Hangoutiversary III. PLEASE, BE CELEBRATEDSo please, meet me on July 16th. Right here, inside the place where we had our virtual first date. Comment back and let me know that you're planning to come, I will organize special circles of you all, so we can rotate the 10 seats and meet and meet and meet again.I'll sing our songs of celebration. I'll sing new songs of adoration, to you and this crazy world that gives us a chance just when we think maybe it can't. Come with your hopes and your dreams to be amplified and your updates and your friends and families and fantasies. Let's sing 'til our throats go weak and dance in front of computer screens, like the silly beautiful people we know ourselves to be.  HOW TO HANGIn case you're new or rusty all you have to do to join this Hangout is: ✪ RSVP a big fat yes here.✪ On Wednesday, July 16th come back to this page when the Hangout starts (6PM Eastern US Time).✪ You can watch or click "join" to on my page +Daria Musk!✪ Don't for get to comment and let me know if you want to join and around what time. ePublish Unum - Education for Authors161,857We admit it--sometimes we focused too much on the latter end of the digital publishing lifecycle. But for many should-be authors, getting past the "why would anyone care what I have to write about?" is a giant hurdle. If you're sitting there filled with self-doubt, you certainly aren't going to start writing, let alone get published. On the next Books & Beer Hangout, +Michael O'Reilly joins us for a lively conversation about this very topic. We'll deal with fears, rewards, tests and motivation to move you past that point and get you started on the path to being a published author. And remember, you can join in for the B&B Hangover at :15 after the hour to get your questions answered live! But you have to be in our circles to get the invite, so do so now!Books & Beer is co-produced and co-hosted by +Evo Terra & +Jeff Moriarty, publishing pioneers and craft beer enthusiasts. We Hangout every Monday, at 6:00 pm PT/9:00 pm ET as a Google Hangout On Air. Join us!Books and Beer: Why Should Anyone Care What You Have To Write About?2013-04-30 03:00:007

Gailen Mapes67,544Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera N-Q - 9 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to September 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting August 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-09-09 10:38:051356312

Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-04-28 10:26:381507113

Has Anyone Experienced This With Reviews?

Last week I did five reviews on Google Local for places that I got to try out over the preceding week. Last night I happened to look at my Reviews page, and saw that all five of them had been flagged and marked private, with a note that they didn't adhere to the content policies, which can be found at https://support.google.com/plus/answer/2622994?hl=en&ref_topic=2624941

My first thought was maybe they were flagged under the Spam category, since I type pretty fast and may have submitted all five of them within a 5-10 minute window. So I tried resubmitting just one of them last night, only to find that it's been re-flagged today. I snipped one of the reviews (which you might recognize from a post I did last week) in hopes that someone is able to clue me in on why this review doesn't adhere to the content policy. I'm... more »

No, Really, Just One More...

Yes, yes, I know I said yesterday that I was just uploading that last fireworks shot from the Fourth of July, but it appears I was mistaken. I found one more that I wanted to share, as I thought it ended up with a nice effect. It sure is interesting how the very light ripples in the water change the look of the fireworks in the reflection.

So have a great day, and I promise I'll have something different for tomorrow!

360 Bridge Comparison

I realized after I posted the shot of the 360 Bridge yesterday, that it would be nice to have a comparison shot to see what the scene actually looked like before it was processed to remove the cars. As you can see, in addition to clearing traffic it removed the boat, and smoothed the water, trees, and clouds a bit. The things that moved a lot between all the shots disappeared entirely, while the things that just moved a little ended up smoother and blurrier. Overall I'm pleased to know how to do this, and I imagine I'll have the opportunity to do it again sometime.

In other news, I'd also never made an animated GIF before this, so I guess that's something new I've learned how to do. I think there's some room for improvement on that, though...

Gazing Over The 360 Bridge. Look, Ma, No Cars!

The Pennybacker Bridge in Austin carries Loop 360 (also known as the Capital of Texas Highway) across Lake Austin. The north side of the river along the area sports tall cliffs, through which highway engineers cut a narrow pass to accommodate the road. This left a tall rise on either side of the highway, creating excellent viewing conditions for enjoying the scenery.

One thing I've been meaning to try for a while is the process of removing moving objects from a picture by taking multiple shots and then averaging out the images to display the median pixels. In preparation for that, last time I was at the bridge I set up my camera on a tripod and took a few dozen shots as the cars zipped by below me. Last night I loaded those shots into Photoshop, and then had it stack, merge, and blend the images. It took a while, as I probably... more »

Overall I'm pretty happy with the result, and look forward to using the technique in the future to create more interesting results.___

A Pleasant Resting Spot

I was out for a walk at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center here in Austin on Sunday afternoon, and stopped by one of the little streams running through it. This delightful little waterfall made the most soothing splashing noise. If only I'd had a hammock I could have happily taken a nap right there by the trail.

The Amazing Bumble Bee

It amazes me how much of our ecosystem depends on pollination by bees. They just fly around doing their thing, and as a result they keep all the plants reproducing. I'm always impressed with how natural systems are both complex and beautiful. This little guy flies around harvesting from flowers, and the net result is that there are future generations of the flowers from which future generations of bees can harvest. As a happy by-product, I get a beautiful scene to enjoy and photograph.

Service With A Smile

The other day I stopped for lunch and didn't want to leave my camera in the car, so I brought it in with me. The young lady who brought me my lunch liked the camera and chatted about her interest in photography. As I was getting ready to go she asked if I would take her picture, and I was happy to do so.

Dive On In

I attended my son's swim meet yesterday morning, which was notably cooler than the past couple of months on account of a cold front that blew in the night before. Fortunately the rain stayed away long enough for the meet, and then poured on down most of the rest of the day. As I may have mentioned, we can certainly use the rain.

I did think to bring my camera to the meet and took a few pictures here and there. I like the way this shot of one of the divers turned out with the background treeline, and thought I'd share it with you. I hope all of you are having a great weekend!

Puff The Magic Hummingbird

I was out taking some more hummingbird pictures yesterday, and noticed this little guy guarding one of the feeders. Whenever another one would fly near he would puff up all his feathers to look bigger, and if the newcomer didn't leave he would then fly up and chase them off. Of course, while he was off chasing one others would come over for a drink, but I guess he can't be everywhere at once. It's neat how even these little guys have distinct personalities, isn't it?

Enjoying A Quick Siesta

The annual hummingbird migration is gathering in the Austin area in preparation for the trek south to the coast and then on to Mexico, and our back yard is humming with activity. Yesterday evening my wife and I sat out back with a neighbor and we all watched the little birds flit around arguing over their favorite feeders and plants. They are a delight to watch.

This one little guy liked sitting on this spot to watch a nearby feeder, and he'd zoom in to chase off others who got near it. At one point my wife noticed his head starting to dip like he was going to fall asleep and pointed it out to us. Sure enough, he took a quick nap right there before popping back up to defend his territory. I was lucky enough to get a shot of him resting. It's a brief, peaceful moment in an otherwise fast-moving flurry of activity.

This Sky Even Makes A Cement Plant Look Good!

Also while I was out and about yesterday, I took this shot of a cement plant (concrete plant?) at a quarry near Austin. The sky was really nice yesterday, wasn't it? Today we're supposed to have a cold front blowing through, so highs are only going to be in the lower 90s for the next few days. We may even get some rain! Presumably the sky won't be quite this pretty for that, I suppose, but rain will be worth it. We need every drop we can get around here these days.

The Changing Austin Skyline

I was driving past a good spot today and the clouds looked pretty nice so I thought I'd stop and snap a shot to share with you all. Austin's skyline used to be really low and flat, but in the past few years taller and taller buildings are starting to crop up downtown. It's starting to get a distinctive shape to it, I think. Given all the cranes sticking up above it, I expect it'll change even more over the next year. Soon we'll be a grown-up city, for better or for worse.

Help Defend Net Neutrality!

September 10 is the Internet Slowdown, a combined effort of concerned web site operators to illustrate the potential devastating effect of the FCC's proposed changes to Network Neutrality. If you enjoy equal access to whatever web site you choose to access on the bandwidth you pay for, rather than fast access only to the sites that pay hefty fees to your provider and slowdowns for every other site, then take a minute to lend your voice in support of maintaining Net Neutrality.

If you have a web site of your own, they provide simple tools for adding a banner or popup once per visitor to help illustrate the issue. Please consider helping out to blanket the Internet with the appearance of a slowdown to help us all avoid being saddled with the real thing, forever.

Request For Camera Information And Suggestions

As regular readers may know, I'm about to be putting up new owl houses to replace the one lost to bee colonization and to get a camera into the one that most commonly houses owls so that we can hopefully stream video of the baby owls growing up. Unfortunately, I'm having difficulty determining the ideal solution as far as a camera goes. I've linked the best option I've come up with so far, but it's not perfect.

What I'd really like is a camera much like this one (very small, color, with night vision) but a wireless IP connection so it could stream directly to the computer. Wired IP connection would be my next choice. If any of you have experience with a better choice than this one, or other suggestions in general, I'd love to hear about it. If I get things working really well it would be fun to have... more »

Bye Bye Bees

The bee colony in one of our owl houses was getting big enough that we finally pulled the trigger and called a bee rescue organization to come relocate them to a more productive location. Sunday evening a nice couple showed up and didn't have any trouble at all getting the bees out. This fellow put up the ladder, unscrewed the bottom screw, loosely wrapped the whole box in a sheet to keep the bees enclosed without crushing them, unscrewed the top screw, and then carried the box down the ladder. No complications and the whole process just took a few minutes. Apparently it's a lot tougher when the bees take up residence in the walls of your house and things have to be torn apart to get to them. Being able to just take the whole structure was pretty handy. Now I'll need to build a replacement owl house, though the bee people suggested I put it in a different tree so future bees aren't attracted to it due to the smell on this one. On the plus side, building a new house lets me design it to accommodate a video camera, so maybe next owl season we'll have an owl-cam to share.___

When It's Time To Lay, It's Time To Lay...

Most of the time the chickens like to have the nesting boxes to themselves. Today, however, my wife called me out to witness the most crowded we've seen it in there. Not exactly the most comfortable conditions for laying an egg, but I guess when it's time, it's time.

In related news, the other day we had our first six-egg day. All six of the hens are now producing regularly and we're good to go on our family egg supply.

In related news, the other day we had our first six-egg day. All six of the hens are now producing regularly and we're good to go on our family egg supply.___

Enjoying The Texas Summer

I went out back to check on the chickens at lunch time and was impressed with the blue sky and white clouds. Overall it's pretty nice in Texas this summer, though some people might consider it a little warm. I hope all of you have a great weekend!

And Then This Happened...

Someone brought an enormous box of LEGOs to work yesterday, and at the end of the afternoon we had a building party. Nothing like the start of a three-day weekend to relax things around the office. I'm going to do my best not to think of work that whole time, except for posting this, which really wasn't that bad. I hope all of you have a great weekend, and for all of you who also have a holiday on Monday, enjoy!

One More From Anime Overload

Here's one more shot I got from Anime Overload 2014. It's +Holly Gloha as Blair the Cat from Soul Eater. Thanks again to all the awesome cosplayers for doing what you do, and special thanks to Holly for taking the time to let me get some shots of each of her outfits over the three day event. I'm looking forward to next time!

Chickens Love The Sun, Too!

It's a bit under a hundred degrees here in Austin, on account of us having had a cold front blow through the other day. Despite the heat, some of our chickens enjoy hanging out in the coop right where the sun shines through one of the windows, basking in the rays. Here's a shot of Red working on her tan. I'd say she was getting ready for swimsuit season, but it's really already upon us.

Texas Sun Flower Weed

This sunflower in our front yard has gotten pretty ridiculously tall, but steadfastly refuses to actually sprout a flower at the top. Eventually it's going to either reach the Land of the Giants up in the clouds, at which point I will send one of my kids up it to retrieve the goose that lays the golden eggs, or fall over and crush my house. I guess those two results aren't necessarily mutually exclusive if the reason it falls over is because my son has to chop it down with an axe to prevent the giant from pursuing him. More to come as the story unfolds!

Painting With Chickens

Everyone in my family (Except me. I am delinquent.) has painted one of these metal squares for decorating our back yard fence. My wife decided that she wanted the chickens to paint one of them, too, so this afternoon that's just what happened. If you ever wanted to see the finger talon-painting skills of some happy chickens, this is your chance. (Well, mostly happy. Some of them were a littler perturbed getting paint on their feet to do the painting.) All in all it went well and we're happy with the results.

Now I just have to get around to painting a metal square of my own. :)

Another (Adopted) Texas Monkey

Here's another monkey from my hill country photo walk this past week. These little guys are endlessly fascinating to watch, not the least because so many of their behaviors are familiar from people I know. :)

I look forward to going out there again sometime, perhaps once the weather cools down a bit, with a better lens. There were some wild pigs and turkey off in the distance that I think would have been good to see but I just didn't have the reach. I'm looking forward to it.

More Fluid Than Knee?

Sorry for a few days of not posting. I've been laid up a bit after injuring my knee, which proceed to swell up. After the weekend ended and it was still puffy, I gave the doctor a call. They were able to get me in this morning, at which point they kindly removed a fair amount of fluid from the aforementioned knee. The fellow doing the removing suggested that I get a picture of the amount so that I could show my wife so she wouldn't think I was making it all up to shirk household responsibilities or something. Is this the modern-day equivalent of a doctor's note?

Some Days There Are Monkeys

Today I had to go do some work out in the hill country southwest of Austin, and while I was in the neighborhood got to do a little exploring with my camera. It turns out that not all the wildlife in the area is what you'd normally expect when you think of Texas. Here's one shot I got, as an example. I was a little annoyed I didn't have a longer lens with me, as there were some other shots I just couldn't get with the 70mm. Ah well, live and learn. Next time I'll be ready!

Oklahoma At Zilker!

Sunday evening I went to see the annual Zilker Summer Musical at the Zilker Hillside Theater with family and friends. This year's production is Roger and Hammerstein's Oklahoma. We had a great time! The casting was excellent and the performances were great. In particular Quinton Johnson as Will Parker and Leslie Hethcox as Ali Hakim each stole the show with their fantastic work. It's a fun show, and it runs for one more Thursday through Sunday weekend (August 14-17) so if you're in or around the Austin area you still have a chance to see it.

My one complaint about the whole evening is that there is a rule against leaving unattended blankets on the hillside prior to 6 PM to make things fairer for everyone. I arrived at 5:45 to get a good spot and the entire center of the hill was covered with mostly unattended blankets. Clearly someone... more »

Anime Overload 2014: Day Two

I've added the second day's batch of photos to my Anime Overload album. It was quite a long day, and I took a lot of shots, but the convention was tons of fun. I hope a lot of the people included in here are able to find their pictures, as I was very motivated to include at least one shot of everyone. I don't want anyone to be left out. I should also point out that lighting in the hotel wasn't always the best, and was particularly problematic in the main event hall. I did my best to compensate, but if you're included in here and don't like the shot just let me know and I'll be happy to remove it.

Here gracing the front of this post is another shot I got of +Holly Gloha, who was extraordinarily gracious enough to give me another opportunity or two to get her picture over the weekend. In this one we stepped out just past the... more »

In this one we stepped out just past the hotel parking lot and found a shady area with some natural background. It was still very hot outside despite the shade, and I'm glad Holly was willing to put up with it in her costume. I'd also like to point out that I attended a couple of panels and was impressed with her kindness and patience with even troublesome audience members. She's a class act all around.

I snipped one of the reviews (which you might recognize from a post I did last week) in hopes that someone is able to clue me in on why this review doesn't adhere to the content policy. I'm certainly open to suggestions.

The most frustrating thing about this is that I see no avenue of recourse toward solving the problem. There's no link or contact about what to do if you feel your content doesn't violate the policy, or how to get any clarification of exactly what the problem is. I enjoy writing reviews for places on Google+, and I'm pretty sure that Google wants to have users write reviews of places, but it would be handy if there were a bit more transparency as to how to work out any rough spots that arise in the process.

If I do happen to figure out how to proceed, or an official answer as to what's wrong here, I'll be sure to update things so that I'm not the only one to know. Hopefully it's something that can be corrected.  :)___

Anime Overload 2014: Day One

I spent some time yesterday at Anime Overload, an Austin anime convention celebrating its sixth year. I had a wonderful time running around taking pictures, and I must say that it's great to have a large group of interesting people who really want to have their picture taken.

There were all levels of skill represented, but every single person was excited and proud of their costume and happy to have someone interested in getting shots of their handiwork. I've tried to include at least one shot of each person, so they can find themselves online. It just makes me happy to look at every one of them. The fun and excitement were definitely contagious.

I'm headed off for day two today, and expect to have just as good a time as yesterday. I did go cycling for an hour this morning, so we'll see how my legs feel this evening after... more »

A Bit Of Fun At Dub Academy

Last week I got to go on a +Google Local Austin event during which we toured several East Austin locations. One of the places is called Dub Academy, which I had previously never heard of. It's a non-profit school for learning how to DJ and mix songs, which is something I've never done. We got to do a quick 20-minute intro on this equipment, and it was really fascinating to get a peek behind the scenes of the art and science of mixing and scratching. It had never even crossed my mind that a place like this existed, though I'm not exactly sure where I assumed people learned this skill.

Now that I know it's there, maybe I'll go back and take a full lesson to really learn the basics. I definitely recommend checking it out if you're in Austin and have ever thought that it might be kind of fun to do this. Enjoy!

Bee Experiment Runs Amok...

Regular readers may recall that several weeks ago we had some bees inhabit one of our owl houses. (The one that we don't usually have owls living in.) We're a fan of having bees around to pollinate plants and such, so we've left them to their own devices. However, I am beginning to think the hive is about to outgrow the house. We may have to call a bee expert and have them relocated to a more suitable location. Still, it's been pretty impressive watching the mass of them grow.

And Now For Something Completely A Little Different

While I was out shooting the Milky Way last Saturday night I ran across this road maintenance vehicle and decided it would make a fine addition to my Nature of Construction album. Given that most of the other shots in the album are of flowers and construction equipment, I figured the Milky Way and construction equipment would be a little change of pace. Also, you never see all those other Milky Way photographers out there including construction equipment in their shots, so maybe this is unique. Clearly I'll have to Google that...

While I had the camera set up for shooting the stars the other evening I took the time to clamber up and get a shot of myself looking up at the Milky Way. I kind of like the way it came out, and that it isn't your run of the mill selfie. I hope all of you get to do some viewing like this very soon!

Star Gazing

Last night my friend Amber accompanied me to my favorite dark(er) sky spot near Austin to watch the stars and take some pictures.  Living in a city it's easy to forget (or never to have seen, sadly enough) how spectacular the Milky Way is as it wraps across the sky overhead. Since the center of our galaxy is located in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, it's best situated for viewing and photography around this time of year, when the Sun is in the opposite part of the sky from it. That makes this a great time to pick a clear night and head out of town to look up and stare for a while. Here's a shot I got of Amber doing exactly that, with the Milky Way glowing above her.

Halfway There!

Today marks the first day with three of our six chickens laying eggs. I can't imagine that the other three are too far behind. I find it interesting that (presumably) the newest one laid an egg that with notably lighter color than the other two. We have multiple breeds, so maybe that's a breed thing. They certainly all eat the same food and live under the same conditions. I'll be curious to see whether the color differences continue, or whether it's just an issue of it being a first egg, which can make them a little wonky. Regardless, it's one more development toward having a rather large quantity of eggs available for our family.

We've had only one of our chickens laying eggs for the past couple of weeks, waiting expectantly for the others to join in. Yesterday there was again only one egg, but we kind of thought it might be from another hen. Today we know for sure! There were two eggs waiting for me in the nesting box. Soon we will be awash in yummy organic eggs!

Model And Camera

At the event I went to last Thursday evening Olympus was kind enough to bring a bunch of cameras and lenses to try out. They also happened to bring a model along to help show things off and provide us an awesome subject. Here's a shot I got of Lexi with one of the Olympus cameras. I like the fact that the off-camera flash let me get a good image of her while letting the whole background fade out into darkness. I'm really enjoying the learning process as I go along.

More Purple Martins Than You Can Shake A Stick At...

Each summer hundreds of thousands of purple martins from all over central Texas converge on the Highland Mall area of Austin, and roost in a small group of trees each evening. This year the gathering estimated at about 600,000. The swirling mass of birds around sunset is amazing.

We went out last night to watch the spectacle, and it did not disappoint. I took this video which shows the group beginning to converge on the trees, though hundreds of thousands are still flying about clearing the surrounding area of bugs in an enormous evening snack. It was hard to get good pictures of the masses of birds in the trees, but I'll see what I can come up with.

The gathering will disperse by about the end of July, but that means those of you in the Austin area still have another week or so to head over and have a look.... more »

The gathering will disperse by about the end of July, but that means those of you in the Austin area still have another week or so to head over and have a look. There were probably at least a hundred people there last night to watch. I hope you get to go see it yourself, but I recommend wearing a hat, a rain poncho, or bringing an umbrella. There's definitely the risk of getting a little fallout from the flock.

EDIT: I also realized, this is my very first YouTube video. Very exciting. :)___

Interesting Hats Make Interesting Pictures

Here's another shot I took at Russian House bar and restaurant the other evening. This young lady and some friends were enjoying themselves wearing the various Russian hats and taking selfies. I thought this particular hat looked really good on her, and the Russian mural on the wall added to the ambiance.

Drinking and Clicking, Russian Style

I went to a +Drink and Click™ event last night, this time at Austin's very pleasant Russian House. It's a bar and restaurant with an entirely Russian menu, and it's really quite good. The foyer has a couple of wardrobes filled with various Russian hats and costumes, so guests are welcome to really get into the spirit of things. It turns out that putting on an interesting hat in a venue filled with a lot of photographers is pretty much an invitation to have a lot of people take your picture, even if you're one of the photographers. This shot is of Sarah, who was there trying out one of the Olympus cameras which the Olympus reps were kind enough to bring and doing her best to live up to the name of the event. She put on one of the hats, and sure enough she got her own picture taken.

Some Of This Light Is Gorgeous! Some Of It Is Not.

Here's another shot of our Milky Way galaxy over the Texas horizon from about a week ago. I have to drive about 45 minutes out of Austin to get dark enough skies for decent viewing of the Milky Way, but as you can see the horizon is still polluted with light from that distance. It's getting harder and harder to find really dark skies in the U.S., so you should definitely take advantage of the viewing when you do find yourself someplace far enough out on a clear night. Also, I know that some cities are taking actions to help curb light pollution, which incidentally also wastes money and energy, so if you enjoy seeing the wonders of the night sky you might mention to your elected officials that you'd like them to do what they can to cut down on wasted light pointed up at the sky. It's not something everyone thinks about all... more »

Bye Soccer, See You Again Around Here In Four Years!

Each World Cup I hear an announcer say something like "There's so much interest this year in the U.S., maybe the sport will finally catch on." I think the sport is plenty popular here among people who participate in sports. It's just not sufficiently popular with the TV networks, probably because the clock doesn't stop during play so there's no place to insert regular TV commercials. What do you think it would take to bring the sport to at least the popularity of, say, hockey in the U.S.?

Incidentally, I took this shot across the street from my son's recent swim meet, where I determined that it's apparently not soccer season around here...

Summer Swim Team Draws To A Close

I just got home from my older son's Divisional Championship meet for his summer swim team. While it's a pain to have to get up at 5 AM on Saturdays to go to swim meets during the summer, they're actually quite a pleasant time. He's been swimming with this summer team for about 11 years now, and the improvement over the years is pretty impressive. Here he is during the 100m Butterfly. As it turns out, swim meets are also a fun time for me to take pictures. :)

The Pile Of Bees Is Growing...

At their current rate I'm pretty sure they're going to take over the world in a month or two. On the other hand, I'm guessing there's lots of pollination going on in our yard.

One More Fireworks Shot

Here's one last shot I took at the Quarry Lake fireworks show on the Fourth of July. I don't think it's as spectacular as the other two I shared, but it's a nice representation of the setting out there. The lake is beautiful and peaceful, and turns out to be a great setting for shooting exploding things into the sky. On the plus side, I learned a few more things about taking pictures of fireworks this year, and I look forward to next year so hopefully I can do even better. In the meantime, I hope you all have a great day!

There's Something Going On Up Above...

At one point during the Fourth of July fireworks show at Quarry Lake I decided to point my camera down toward the water and see what the reflections looked like. As it happens, they looked pretty impressive. I like the way this shot turned out.

Milky Way Over Texas

Saturday evening I noticed that the sky was clear, and that the moon was going to set a bit after 1 AM. That seemed kind of late to drive out into the countryside in search of dark skies, but I've really been wanting to try taking a picture of the Milky Way. So I consumed some caffeine and drove about 40 miles out of town, and was rewarded with a really nice view of the sky. It's still close enough that light pollution is an issue along the horizon, as you can see in this shot, but overall the sky is way more visible than in town. So here it is, my first attempt at a shot of our very own galaxy, the Milky Way. I look forward to finding better (and more interesting) locations, and improving my technique. I'll be sure to share the results with you all.

The Most Expensive Egg Ever!

Months of work and more dollars than I care to tally have finally paid off. Yesterday morning I discovered one of the chickens sitting in the nesting box looking vaguely perplexed at what was going on, and when I checked back an hour or two later this tiny little egg awaited me. Soon we should be awash in fresh, wholesome, organic eggs!
