This year (after G+ has settled down a bit) I hope that we get a few more peeps to watch the races together with us. Here is how it works: ➢ We all watch the race on our own individual TV sets. There is not going to be a race broadcast in the hangout for several reasons. ▸ A broadcast would take over the hangouts audio and would make it impossible for us to talk. ▸ It means, we can all watch the race in the language we prefer (in my case it's German). ▸ The broadcast would take up a hangout spot. The first road-legal self-driving truck has been issued a license plate by the state of Nevada. The vehicle is "NHTSA level 3" certified, which means that it can drive itself, but a driver is required to be able to take over control if the need arises. (Level 4, at which nothing has yet been certified, can operate completely autonomously, without any humans paying attention at all)

Daimler (which owns Freightliner) is pitching this as a solution for driver drowsiness, which is a significant issue for truck drivers. Going forward, this is likely to be an important milestone in getting autonomous transport into our day-to-day world.

Open AI is a non profit organization founded by Elon Musk and has put together one of the best teams in the Machine Learning community. They just released their first Reinforcement Learning toolkit, and I think this is quite significant.

A glimpse inside the mind of a machine learning algorithm

Every day we are reading the minds of others around us. The more you know somebody the more you understand how they tick, how they think. How will they react if we throw a new idea their way. Have you ever wondered how it would feel to understand how a machine thinks the same as you do with fellow humans?

At Weavr we have found a way to take a peek inside the mind of the machine. And by machine I mean a deep learning image captioning algorithm. We created an interface where you can upload one image of your choice. This image is then presented to a set of image recognition and captioning algorithms which return words of what they “see”. We then use these words to look for public available content to present it along the seed image.

A glimpse inside the mind of a machine learning algorithm

Every day we are reading the minds of others around us. The more you know somebody the more you understand how they tick, how they think. How will they react if we throw a new idea their way. Have you ever wondered how it would feel to understand how a machine thinks the same as you do with fellow humans?

At Weavr we have found a way to take a peek inside the mind of the machine. And by machine I mean a deep learning image captioning algorithm. We created an interface where you can upload one image of your choice. This image is then presented to a set of image recognition and captioning algorithms which return words of what they “see”. We then use these words to look for public available content to present it along the seed image.
For example, uploading a coffee art image results in the system creating a story around coffee, with espresso bar and coffee maker included.

The system also has the capability of selecting a given image to add more content to the initial collection of images. And here is where things start to get interesting.

Basically we started getting a feeling at how the model understands the world. We throw in a bridge and it comes back with bridges, water, forests. We pick another bridge with more water and it comes back with lakeside views and sunsets. It feels like chatting with a friend about a topic and letting the conversation wander off.

We also see how the system is trying to make sense of the world when it fails. We tried with a picture of someone holding the phone to take a selfie in front of a group of friend. The system thought it was folks playing volleyball. There is indeed a similarity between someone with a hand up holding a phone in front of a group of friends and someone serving a ball in a volleyball match.

Psychologists call our ability to get in the shoes of other people having a “theory of mind”. By playing with the system in this way we get a feeling of how the system “sees the world”. It’s like listening to a kid explain something that they have seen for the first time. They try to relate to things by explaining them using concepts that they know.

We used this feedback to adjust the system parameters and make it more accurate during a second test phase.  The system produced 160 recommendations on the first phase and 120 on the second phase.  We found out that a recommender system that uses an algorithm that mines patterns with high confidence, independent of their frequency and periodicity, might achieve better results and a higher acceptance by users.  

The system was developed by two master students from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW under the supervision of Prof. Holger Wache.___

Twenty years ago this day, one of the random generators in life put me on a plane to Switzerland with a one way ticket and all my possessions in a backpack. I was supposed to be here one year only, but life knows better than that. Plus, once you have tasted the chocolate there is no going back.
Of course, I'm proud of my Mexican roots, and thankful for my friends in the US and in Europe. But for now, this is the place I call home. Therefore, today I celebrate the day with the best chocolate cake there is.

The aim of Weav isn’t merely to find its place in a heavily populated world of music-related digital platforms: it’s to entirely change the way musicians create (and audiences listen to) music. The premise is simple enough: when a track is sped up or slowed down by a listener at home today, it inevitably becomes distorted.Cute Little Apps thinks it has a solution: asking musicians to record different elements of a song suitable to be played at different speeds, leaving the listener able to move the BPM up and down while receiving an audio blend that is always pleasing to the ear.

Technology creates prosperity. It reduces the costs of almost everything we need. But it is a double edged sword that eliminates jobs that can be automated. This raises the question of what will folks whose job gets displaced do for a living? Some thinkers propose a Universal Basic Income that would allow to cover the basic needs for everyone. I actually believe that this income it is already being distributed.

I am a satisficer.  Not only that, I am the satisficer of the family.  A satisficer will optimize decisions by taking the first solution that will "satisfy" the issue at hand. This is contrary to a maximizer, who can spend hours analyzing the pros and cons of all possible solutions to a problem. As you might imagine, my wife is the maximizer in the family.

Usually a satisficer has an easy life.  You have an issue, you search for a solution, find the first one that works and take it. Then you can draw a check mark on the issue and keep on with your life.  Except when it goes wrong...

Our DVD player is some 8 years old.  It survived our little kids, playing thousands of hours of cartoons, usually over and over.  But lately it has issues reading disks.  It will work, sometimes the second, sometimes the fifth, sometimes the eight time you insert the movie.  A replacement was due.

So I go to the store and as a good satisficer would do, buy the first DVD/Blue ray/USB/ Networked/ DLNA/ Youtube/ Netflix/ you name it player.  A fine device.  Except for one thing.  I did not check the cable outputs. My new player has a minimalist design. An HDMI output, a coaxial SPDIF audio out, an Ethernet connector and a USB input.

I get with my shining new device home.  I realize that my 10 year old projector does not have an HDMI input.  My maximizing wife started grinsing at me.  But a satisficer will not give up easily.  I looked at my online electronics distributor and promptly found a HDMI to VGA connector adapter.  I ordered it and once it arrived I unboxed all componets.

The god of the maximizers had several blows in store for me. After connecting the adaptor the screen of my projector was black. I had also forgotten that my Denon audio system had an optical SPDIF interface and not a Coaxial like that devilish minimalist device had.  

I could see the grins in my maximizing wife turning into a wide smile.  The final blow came when I connected my PC monitor and realized that the lowest resolution that HDMI offers is way higher than my 10 year old projector.

So for once my satisfizing went wrong.  I am now in Maximizers land, trying to decide if I should get a new projector, what to do about the audio input, or if I should just get an "older" DVD player with less functions that will display something in my old projector.

Decisions, decisions. I've drifted to maximizing hell, all I wanted was for my daughter to see the latest Tinkerbell movie comfortably...

When interviewing candidates that want to join our digitalstrom team I always have some algorithm questions ready for them.  And what I am looking for is someone who can not only get the task done but also somebody who would choose the most efficient algorithm that gets the task done.  
One example of an algorithm question I use is keeping track of the historical temperature data for our customers. Choosing the right algorithm can make a big difference on the amount of data that we have to keep in our backend servers for every installation.

One example of an algorithm question I use is keeping track of the historical temperature data for our customers. Choosing the right algorithm can make a big difference on the amount of data that we have to keep in our backend servers for every installation.
The problem description is quite simple: We have a smartphone application where the user should be able to view the indoor temperature of a given room together with the outdoor temperature.  We want the user to be able to zoom in and out in time, and to scroll through the graph.
Returning the raw data to the smartphone will not work for all cases.  The smartphone has limited memory resources and network bandwidth.  Lets assume that you receive a new temperature value every 5 minutes. If the user zooms out to a week the graph would have to display 12*24*7= 2016 data points.   That's just for a week.  The smartphone app will be slow if we use raw data.
- The first question I expect from a candidate is how many data points can we send to the smartphone application so that it stays responsive.  About 1000 is a good answer
- The second concept I expect is to get some kind of aggregation defined. Once the zoom level reaches a given scale an efficient implementation will use a different data set that returns data every hour, and then every day, and then every week.  The smartphone app will then fetch the aggregated data when zoomed out.
And its now that things start getting interesting.  Fetching the stored data to calculate the rolling average on every query is definitely a poor design decision.  I would expect the candidate to come with a schema for keeping a rolling average.
Aggregating data for one hour requires adding the 12 five minute values and dividing them by 12 once the hour is reached. But there is a small detail to consider.  If we only wait until the hour is finished to calculate the value, the graph will have a gap at the end. For example, if it is 10:55 we would have data for:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and then a gap of 55 minutes.  We can do better than this.
We can create an algorithm that will keep a rolling average of the last hour. This algorithm will have to keep track of 2 numbers:
- The total of the sum of all temperatures
- The number of data sets
Calculating the value of the 10:55 data point is easily done by dividing the sum by the number of data sets.The same needs to be done for the day and week series.
The best engineers will also cover corner cases like what happens if the server were we are keeping the data restarts.  Using our algorithm we just need to make sure we store our total and count for every of the series we are keeping.
As the old saying goes: „All roads lead to Rome“. But we want the one that will get us there faster and spending the least amount of resources. ___
