fiorella montano956The +Swiss Photography Club G+ would like to invite you to a photo walk in and near Luzern on Saturday 8 June. The walk will offer long exposure, street and landscape photography opportunities. The PhotowalkWe will start the day in the city center of Lucerne, where there will be opportunities to do city/street photography near the old town. At the end of the morning we will grab a few sandwiches in preparation for the afternoon part of the walk .In the afternoon we will go up to the Pilatus mountain. Pilatus is one of the most legendary places in Central Switzerland, and one of the most beautiful. On a clear day the mountain offers a panoramic view of the Vierwaldstättersee (lake Lucerne) and 73 Alpine peaks. To get to Pilatus we will travel by boat from Luzern to Alpnachstad, where we will take the cogtrain up to Pilatus. The combined boat/cogtrain trip takes about  1 1/2 hour. Obviously there will be plenty of shooting opportunities on the boat as well. For those who are interested and still have time, it will be an option to stay in the evening and to do some long exposure and night photography at the lake. For more info please visit: http://www.myswitzerland.com/en/lucerne.htmlhttp://www.myswitzerland.com/en/pilatus1.htmlSchedule08:15 - 08:30 Meet at the Luzern main train station (at the big arch in front)08:30 - 08:45 Organize Tickets for the public transport to the Pilatus08:45 - 11:30 Morning Program in Luzern city11.50 - 13:30 Travel to Pilatus (sandwich during travel)13:30 - 16:15 Afternoon Shooting from the top of mount Pilatus16:25 - 18:00 Transfer back to Luzern Mainstation18.00 - 19.00 Farewell drink, small dinner for evening-shooters19:00 - 22:00 Tentative evening shootGearAll lenses are useful. Jens “Google Plus Yoda” Graikowski579,095HANGOUT FOR THE FIRST F1 GRAND PRIX OF THE SEASONLast year we did several "Formula 1 Race hangouts" and though I'd have wished attendance to have been a bit higher, we had great fun with the few who did come. This year (after G+ has settled down a bit) I hope that we get a few more peeps to watch the races together with us. Here is how it works:➢ We all watch the race on our own individual TV sets. There is not going to be a race broadcast in the hangout for several reasons.▸ A broadcast would take over the hangouts audio and would make it impossible for us to talk.▸ It means, we can all watch the race in the language we prefer (in my case it's German).▸ The broadcast would take up a hangout spot. I'd rather have one of you guys there.➢ I'll invite participants in two steps.▸ About an hour before the race starts (find out here, when exactly that will be in your time zone: http://bit.ly/Ynm5nT) I will invite all of those of the "Google+ Paddock Club". ▸ Just before the race I will invite my Formula 1 circle.GET YOU GOOGLE+ PADDOCK CLUB PASS!So if you want to make sure, that you get a spot, join the "G+PC"! To join the club you can either click on "Going" at this event or +1 the second comment at this post: http://bit.ly/ZfYUhL. Either way you'll be added to the "G+PC" circle.I'd also like your ideas on how to make the Formula 1 Race Hangout more interesting.Formula 1 Race Hangout - Melbourne/Australia2013-03-17 07:00:0048
Tim Utzig14,082Thought it might be fun to post a pic of your country, city or state this week, now through Wednesday - as many or as few as you'd like. Just thought it would be a fun way to share a little bit about your country, experiences and some of your favorite destinations and maybe meet a new person. Just take a pic and post it here. Open to invite friends as well.  #YourFavoritePlace  Your Favorite Place2012-11-17 18:00:00192

Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/2)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca  #sharedcircles #circles #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:30:374321234795

Sophie Wrobel18,394My Anti-Relevance CircleWith my sincerest apologies to these wonderful folk!Because there are so many posts about the 'Top 100' Relevant people according to Google's algorithm, I thought today, maybe it's time to see who the algorithm picks up. But after creating my top relevant people, I scratched my head: several names were missing! So I asked myself: How many relevant people does the algorithm fail to recognize? Maybe that's why I hadn't seen much of them on Google+ lately?I'll loosely define 'relevant' as people I could say a few sentences about them, their opinions, or their preferences offhand - and whose presence makes my Google+ experience worthwhile. The proportion is one I find staggering: just under 30% incorrect! For an algorithm that starts filtering out posts based on relevancy, an incorrectness rate of 30% is, in my opinion, extremely high and not very convenient. So my deepest apologies for my apparant non-attention in the past little while.Sure, the top 132 people were people I could all say a few sentences about (and whom I see regularly around Google+). Then someone whom I couldn't recognize popped into the algorithm. And then a somewhat discouraging gap... and then a number of folk whom I could also just as easily say a few sentences about, and who in my opinion should have been somewhere in or around that 'most relevant' region. I'll call this the 'Anti-Relevance' circle, because Google decided that these very relevant people weren't relevant anymore. So maybe that's why I don't see as many of their posts in the last little while... ah yes, the dark side of the algorithmic filter effect. I meet a lot of great people here, but this self imposed limit to 100 is just to make it easier for others to circle the whole bunch and check them out.2013-06-21 19:32:111001221459

Because they are active! ;)We had a very good discussion with +Richard Hoefer and +Bearman Cartoons here: https://plus.google.com/+CircleCount/posts/AMbHGT3Qu1m and one idea was to feature a special group of people and not only the most followed or most engaging ones.I think this circle is not really what +Richard Hoefer meant, but it goes hopefully in the right direction ;)We like such unusual shared circles, since these people didn't act because we have offered to share them in a circle afterwards. They just did/voted/reviewed! ;)A year ago we have already shared a circle like this with the people who have written a review for our Chrome Extension:https://plus.google.com/+CircleCount/posts/6WCpwBTQxKj2013-04-19 10:25:26165772972

My Tiramisu recipe
My friends love it. My daughter and wife fight over who gets to clean the bowl. As most good things in life is full of calories, sugars, coffee and a touch of coffee liquor.  But sometimes you just have to treat yourself to something good.
Enjoy!

"Life will find a way"
This picture of a lettuce that sprouted out in the patio of a friend of mine shows how life will find a way to blossom.  My friend and me have a special way of harvesting our salads. Instead of cutting the whole thing we cut the leaves at the bottom and let the plan live while it keeps giving more leaves.
In the end the plant blooms and seeds spread around the garden. This seed found its way to the stones in the patio and it calls it home now...

A thought provoking article by +Mike Elgan.
He assumes that all IOT devices run Linux. That's not the case, many are based either on zigbee, zwave or powerline technologies, like the ones my company works on.
But it is true that unfortunately there are many IP based IOT devices out there, but the market forces will take care that they either embrace security or die...

cool cartoon btw:-)

Why the Internet of Things may never happen (part 2)

The Internet of Things is great -- if, that is, you like the Internet and you also own some things.

Until this week, the Internet of Things vision had a fatal flaw. But now, it has two fatal flaws.

I'm going to describe the vision, then the flaws. And then I'm going to tell you what I think is actually going to happen:

When the tooth fairy is a mouse
My daughter lost a tooth yesterday. In most spanish speaking countries the tooth fairy is a mouse. Since our daughters favorite stuffed animal is a cat, things got complicated.
She realized that she could not sleep with her beloved cat, for risk of the mouse not showing up.
With all the suspense of course she could not sleep, to the despair of wife who decided to go to bed and deal with the tooth in the morning. In the middle of the night daughter moves to our bed, including tooth. I got waken up by a mother in distress looking for the bloody tooth.
Finally after figuring out where things were, she went back to sleep and I woke up to make crepês for everyone, cat and mouse included...

Great article by Paul Graham on discovering moral fashion ideas that will not hold their ground. Basically what Gallileo did when he said that the earth moved around the sun. Or look for heretic, improper or inappropriate ideas to find the ones that are next to be overturned.
Also finding contradictory taboos, where the society that finds them shocking is likely to be the mistaken one. And understanding that the prohibition will be stronger when the defending group is nervous. This group is halfway between weakness and power.
And then he mentions how great work grow out of ideas that have been overlooked. A good scientist will take the extra step of breaking conventional wisdom.

You know you are driving on the German Autobahn if:
From +Raphaelle Baut . _So true, specially the swiss cars part :-)_ - While driving at 220/240 km/h you still get blinked by the lights of faster vehicles behind you

- Your brakes have heated from having to break from 220 to 80km/h several times (stop & go style)

- You master the taking off from 80 to 200km/h and have fun while doing it.

- During a few kilometers you are overtaken by more than 10 BMW and you feel like part of a BMW car club excursion.

- When returning to 120km/h you fell as if you were rolling at 50km/h

- You watch the fuel gauge more than the speedometer

- You've never seen so many big Swiss cars driving so fast.

- You get upset because some drivers have not seen the magic panel allowing the race to continue.

In the category best project (Actually first and second prize).

The casaceramica is a very interesting concept. It includes several iBeacon senders, one per exhibition room. When you enter the room with an iPad that includes our modified dashboard app that detects iBeacons a light scene is called, and on top of that the dashboard app shows a screen that includes only the scenes that you have selected for that room.  It is a beautiful example of indoor localization together with a smarthome system.

Petit France
Why the name? Wikipedia says:
The name Petite-France ("Little France") was not given for patriotic or architectural reasons. It comes from the "hospice of the syphilitic" (Hospice des Vérolés, in French), which was built in the late fifteenth century on this island, to cure persons with syphilis, then called the "French disease" in German,Franzosenkrankheit.
There goes a poetic name...

Say Cheese

Yesterday I went buying cheese to the new shop in the Jelmoli.  And today I found this delicious recipe for a Cheese Souffle:

Cheese soufflé :
- 50g butter
- 40 g flour
- 25cl milk
- 4 eggs
- 100g grated gruyere
- Salt, pepper, nutmeg

How to prepare:

1) Melt butter in a pan (Take a large pot, to fit the whole contents of the souffle). Once melted add the flour and cook 1-2 minutes.

2) Pour the milk and stirr until it boils . It should simmer and thicken, but not too much (if necessary add a little milk).

3) Season with a pinch of salt , pepper and nutmeg before removing from heat .

4) Out of the fire add the 4 egg yolks avoiding them to cook. Mount the whites and mixed together with the grated cheese. Mix vigorously.

5) Butter the soufflé pot and add the preparation.

6) Bake 20 minutes in a moderate oven (190 ° / 200 ° ). Make sure not to open the door during cooking, serve immediately before the soufflé falls in.

As the Swiss would say: Enguete!

A great video and collection of articles about our microbiome. Well worth watching and reading. Specially if you are a parent or considering becoming one.

Mostly Microbe. Our microbes may be essential to our health - and our happiness.  For every human gene in our genome, there are 100 bacterial genes in our microbiome; in many ways we are "more microbe than human."

5 minute video from +NPR offers a quick and engaging introduction to our invisible partners:
The Invisible Universe Of The Human Microbiome

(+Michael Pollan May 15, 2013)

Excerpt 1: Gut microbes may have a powerful influence on metabolism:

Justin Sonnenburg, a microbiologist at Stanford, suggests that we would do well to begin regarding the human body as “an elaborate vessel optimized for the growth and spread of our microbial inhabitants.” This humbling new way of thinking about the self has large implications for human and microbial health, which turn out to be inextricably linked. Disorders in our internal ecosystem — a loss of diversity, say, or a proliferation of the “wrong” kind of microbes — may predispose us to obesity and a whole range of chronic diseases, as well as some infections. “Fecal transplants,” which involve installing a healthy person’s microbiota into a sick person’s gut, have been shown to effectively treat an antibiotic-resistant intestinal pathogen named C. difficile, which kills 14,000 Americans each year. (Researchers use the word “microbiota” to refer to all the microbes in a community and “microbiome” to refer to their collective genes.) ... A similar experiment was performed recently on humans by researchers in the Netherlands: when the contents of a lean donor’s microbiota were transferred to the guts of male patients with metabolic syndrome, the researchers found striking improvements in the recipients’ sensitivity to insulin, an important marker for metabolic health. Somehow, the gut microbes were influencing the patients’ metabolisms.

Excerpt 2:  Thinking with your gut (microbes) :)

Our gut bacteria also play a role in the manufacture of substances like neurotransmitters (including serotonin); enzymes and vitamins (notably Bs and K) and other essential nutrients (including important amino acid and short-chain fatty acids); and a suite of other signaling molecules that talk to, and influence, the immune and the metabolic systems. Some of these compounds may play a role in regulating our stress levels and even temperament: when gut microbes from easygoing, adventurous mice are transplanted into the guts of anxious and timid mice, they become more adventurous. The expression “thinking with your gut” may contain a larger kernel of truth than we thought.

An inspiring selection of 3 TEDx talks

These 3 talks selected by Raph are some of my favorites.  The one by Jill Bolte Taylor made me laugh, then almost cry and finally think. Debbie Sterling passionately describes what it takes to be a female engineer in a male dominated area. And the last one by Anna Mracek on innovation.

Moods and colors
That LED lights are coming is no secret.  I have been experimenting with some color settings for different moods, and have made quite interesting personal findings that I want to share with you.  First a disclaimer, I work for Digitalstrom where we have a smart home system that allows the user to call scenes where many lamps turn on at the same time in predefined intensity an colors by the flip of a light switch.
The last weeks I have been experimenting with two new products that we have. The first one allows you to control Philips HUE lamps, the second one normal LED stripes.  I set up two very informal test objects in my house and used my wife and kids as testers.
The first test I did was in the bedroom.  I mounted an LED strip in the back of the head of the bed so that the light will shine against the wall. On the side bed I had two small lamps with normalhal... more »

The first test I did was in the bedroom.  I mounted an LED strip in the back of the head of the bed so that the light will shine against the wall. On the side bed I had two small lamps with normal halogen light bulbs, and on the roof a lamp with a Philips HUE lamp.  I played with different colors for going to sleep and waking up.
After playing with many colors we came to the conclusion that red tones are the easiest ones on the eye when both going to sleep and waking up.  The best way for me not to disturb my wife when I am getting into my bed is to turn the LED stripe red on.  For waking up, I programmed the system to call 3 different scenes in the morning.  At 7:00 AM the red stripe goes on. At 7:03 the stripe turns orange and the Philips HUE on the ceiling turns red.  And at 7:05 the stripe goes white while the blinds open up.  Interestingly the most aggressive tone, the one which nobody liked was greenish-blue for the mornings.
In the living room the setup is different. I have ceiling lamps with Hue color lamps, LED stripes by the bookshelves,  and then stand up lamps that project their light to the ceiling. In here it became clear that it was better to turn the ceiling lamps to a given color and use the stand up lamps just to add more light to the scene.  The best light was a white-yellowish with the stand up lamps full on.  Here I realized that the LED stripes did add something to the atmosphere when dimmed up in white, or blue-green colors.
I believe that light moods are here to stay in our lives. Also different moods can be enhanced by different colors.  Which kind of moods would you dress in which colors?

What would you want your house to do if it knew in which room you are?
Imagine that you walk home after a hard days work, and that your home welcomes you with the atmosphere.  The lights go on as you prefer them in the evening, the TV turns on to your favorite channel.  Wouldn’t it be nice if your telephone would know in which room of the house you have just walked in?  And have your home do what you always do automatically?
Apple launched a very interesting function called iBeacon in stealth mode. iBeacon uses low power Bluetooth technologies for indoor localization.  Similar to NFC you place your iBeacon modules in different places inside your buildings for indoor localization.  The difference is that the devices beam its ID, and this can go up to several dozen meters.  One manufacturer claims 60 meters with clear sight, we have tested 20 meters inside a building with multiplewalls.<... more »

We have created an iOS app that would call different predefined scenes on your house depending on the room you are. This app locates the room you are on by sensing the distance to the iBeacons that you have placed around your home.  For different rooms you can set the triggers distances to be trigger.  Entering your living room needs a wider range than entering a bathroom. You can also set 3 types of actions: enter, exit or shake.  The reason we created a shake action is for cases where you don’t want an action to be executed immediately.  For example, when you walk by your garage door you don’t want it to open every time.  But when you want in, you can just shake your phone and the action will be executed.
The possibilities of indoor localization for smart buildings are unlimited. There will be many use cases that can be made possible by the combination of these technologies.  Which ones can you dream of?
