Android users: Who uses Google Messenger?

Do you use Messenger?

If so, why do you use Messenger for SMS instead of Hangouts or another app?

If you're an Android user who doesn't use Messenger, why not?

If Google combined Allo, Duo, Voice, Fi, Hangouts, Messenger and Spaces into a single super app, would you use it?

And do you think it would successfully compete with the WhatsApps of the world?

Would one super app be better than lots of limited-use apps?

Discuss!

I'm making fermented hot sauce.

I put a pound of jalapeños in a jar with water, garlic, onions and three yellow carrots, topped with red-wine vinegar and salt.

This has been fermenting now for about a week, and might have another week to go before I blend it into hot sauce.

I'll keep you posted.

Why Google and Apple will rule mixed reality

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/XclDOD )

The brilliant future of mixed reality will come to us from the likes of Microsoft and Magic Leap, according to the conventional wisdom.

Microsoft has grabbed mindshare with awesome demos of its Hololens product, like its Project XRay game demo at its October 2015 Windows 10 event.

Magic Leap, which has raised more than $1 billion from investors, has dazzled YouTube users with simulated experience videos.

Other contenders in this space include ODG and Meta.

There's no question that the demos are cool and that several or all of those products will appear on the market and thrill users with a new experience that blends the real with the virtual.

But the future of mixed reality won't be dominated by Microsoft, Magic Leap, ODG or Meta,... more »

Why Twitter's new anti-harassment tools will fail

(Read my column https://goo.gl/b78Cgj )

Twitter is trying to curb harassment. Again.

Twitter VP of Engineering Ed Ho this week announced three changes that Twitter believes will end its reputation as a haven for trolls, haters, spammers, misogynists, racists and idiots.

Two years ago, Twitter's then-CEO Dick Costolo was quoted in a leaked memo saying that "We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we've sucked at it for years."

Twitter's reputation may be hurting its bottom line. The company this week reported its slowest quarter for revenue growth since the company went public. Twitter consistently loses about $100 million per quarter. Advertising is weak. Revenue is down. User growth is flat.

Twitter's reputation may be hurting its bottom line. The company this week reported its slowest quarter for revenue growth since the company went public. Twitter consistently loses about $100 million per quarter. Advertising is weak. Revenue is down. User growth is flat.

Advertisers don't want to be associated with Twitter because it's a bad neighborhood. Harassment is a perennial problem on the network. Companies apparently don't want their brands sandwiched between nuggets of hate speech. (Twitter executives declined to be interviewed for this story.)

Sadly, Twitter's changes won't stop harassment. They'll make the problem worse. And they'll make the quality of everyday conversations on Twitter worse, too.

Here's why:

Is all this consistent with your experience on Google+?

I'm writing a column in which I say Twitter's new system for fighting harassment is bad because it relies on software-automated moderation.

I believe this doesn't work because it doesn't work on Google+.

Here's what I'm saying. Do you agree or disagree with this?

* * *

In general, I assume Google's technology for algorithmic identification, filtering or sorting is superior to Twitter's. In areas where a direct comparison of such technology is possible, such as in the identification of photo content, Google is superior to other companies.

Is all this consistent with your experience on Google+?

I'm writing a column in which I say Twitter's new system for fighting harassment is bad because it relies on software-automated moderation.

* * *

In general, I assume Google's technology for algorithmic identification, filtering or sorting is superior to Twitter's. In areas where a direct comparison of such technology is possible, such as in the identification of photo content, Google is superior to other companies.

However, even Google's software fails for content moderation. Google has been algorithmically flagging "low quality" replies for years. Now, they hide them by default, and users can reveal them with a well-hidden "See all comments" menu item, which most users don't know about.

In my experience on Google+, probably 10 percent of perfectly good replies are flagged as "low quality." And probably an equal number of "low quality" replies are not flagged as such. The filtering software doesn't work that well.

Because the option is hidden, most users simply see bad comments, and never see some of the good comments. Google+ already has a bad reputation for low engagement. Yet Google's own software kills about 10 percent of the engagement that's there. Users never see it.

Google's automated identification and hiding of "low quality" comments fails, and the result is that Google+ simply isn't as good as it could be. Bad comments appear. Good comments are buried.

Making matters worse, Google's process for blocking a user is a slow, four-step process. You have to click on the user's name to go to their profile, click on a hidden "more options" menu, select "block profile," then click "BLOCK" when the confirmation dialog pops up. Then, the page sits there for between 8 and 10 seconds waiting for it to be blocked.

What I really want on Google+ -- and on Twitter -- is for all replies to show by default. Then, I want two buttons next to each reply. One button deletes the comment. The other button deletes the comment and blocks the user. ___

What's your opinion about Twitter's new anti-harassment changes?

Twitter made three changes:

First, Twitter claims they're "taking steps to identify people who have been permanently suspended and stop them from creating new accounts." Twitter won't say what these methods are because they would be more easily gamed.

Second, Twitter intends to remove tweets by default from search results if they contain "potentially sensitive content" or if they were posted on accounts that have been blocked or muted. Users can disable this "smart search" and see unfiltered results.

Third, Twitter will automatically "collapse" objectionable replies, which includes those deemed "abusive" or "low quality." These will be viewable by clicking on a link that says "Show less relevant... more »

Google's myriad messaging apps: Which are best for you?

Read my column: https://goo.gl/XfcdfV )

Is Google a good choice for communication? With the exception of email, Google is not considered a leader in person-to-person communication apps and services. Skype, owned by Microsoft, tops the video calling space. Facebook dominates social media. Slack leads business chat-room messaging. WhatsApp rules mobile messaging. And besides the big platforms from the big companies, hundreds of startups have created appealing and innovative communications apps and services.

Google lags for a variety of reasons. Among these are confusion and uncertainty -- confusion about which app to use, uncertainty about whether Google will terminate any given product.

Google offers 12 communications apps and services. Alphabetically, these are: Allo, Chat, Gmail, Google+, Groups,... more »

Google lags for a variety of reasons. Among these are confusion and uncertainty -- confusion about which app to use, uncertainty about whether Google will terminate any given product.

Google offers 12 communications apps and services. Alphabetically, these are: Allo, Chat, Gmail, Google+, Groups, Hangouts, Inbox, Messenger, Duo, Project Fi, Spaces and Voice. If you look at the various communication actions you might want to take -- voice calls, video calls, email, text messaging and social posting -- Google has at least two offerings for each.

It's confusing. But there are great reasons to choose Google products for communicating.

Here's everything you need to know to understand, choose from, and make the best use of Google's many communications apps and services:

I'm absolutely loving this book

It's by and about a crazy Brit who roamed across Saudi Arabia's "Empty Quarter" from 1945 to 1950.

Highly recommended.

I liked goat milk best; +Amira Elgan like Crème fraîche best. Nobody liked coffee with kefir.

The best virtual assistant appliance was invented by this teenager

Dylan Rose is kickstarting a new kind of wearable. It’s a virtual assistant appliance called Kai that clips onto any glasses and transmits audio through bone conduction. It’s a brilliant concept, but here’s the best part: Dylan is still in high school.

Here’s my conversation with Dylan Rose.

5 shocking new threats to your personal data

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/ARznZ0 )

I'm not paranoid. Tinfoil hats aren't my scene.

But watch out! In just the past month, the internet and smartphones have come up with five new and surprising ways to steal or expose our personal data.

Of course, these new concerns can now be added to all the old ones. Companies like Google and Facebook still track you and harvest personal data. Hackers still want to steal your data. And the National Security Agency is still out there doing its thing.

And now, these five new trends reveal that your security and privacy could be compromised in ways you probably never imagined.

I've probably handed over a dozen pocketknives to airport security over the years.

I like to carry a tiny Swiss Army knife in my pocket, mainly to open packages, cut string and open bottles.

I recently discovered this TSA-approved mini knife that does most of what I want, but without a blade that keeps is on the list of items banned in-flight.

It has a magnetic phillips screwdriver, bottle opener, wire stripper, scissors, key ring, tweezers and toothpick.

Now I don't have to remember to put my knife into my checked bags every time I fly.

Eyesight suffers with age. Everybody in their 40s needs reading glasses, thanks to Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Meanwhile, I have a policy: Everything I need has to fit in my pants pockets. So where do I carry reading glasses?

I already told you about my fold-up sunglasses.

My reading glasses fold up, too. They're called Foster Grant Microvision reading glasses. They use high-quality lenses, are very inexpensive, come in several magnification strengths and, best of all, fold up into an included case that's the size of a Bic lighter.

Because these glasses fold up so small, I can always -- always! -- have them with me. And that's the most important feature.

Why fake news is a tech problem

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/FUBhbQ )

Patently false news is ridiculous and, as such, harmless. The worst kind of fake news is a Russian export called "disinformatzya."

The Kremlin's "disinformatzya" tactics were honed by the KGB during the Cold War. They've been around for decades, but only in Russia.

What's new is that in recent years Russia has been applying "disinformatzya" to English-language audiences. We're not used to "disinformatzya," and so it's extra effective.

Outside Russia, "disinformatzya" helps Russia destabilize and weaken rivals, while simultaneously enabling the Russian leader to convince the Russian public that the West is just as corrupt and dysfunctional as Russia is.

The worst part is that this manipulative tactic of using "disinformatzya" to deliberately create confusion and havoc works. And because of that, it's being instinctively picked up by American and European organizations, trolls and politicians.

Ultimately, this is a technology problem. And it has a technology solution.

Silicon Valley is our only hope against "disinformatzya."

It’s always great to see a positive response to something you’ve posted. But sometimes you want to see what’s happening overall — the big picture.

To help you see how you’re doing, we’re introducing a new profile insights panel in Google+, available whether you post as a person or a page. It’s a private dashboard where you can see the engagement on all your posts, and on reshares of your posts, as well as follows on your profile and Collections.

To find your dashboard, visit your profile on the web version of Google+ (plus.google.com/me) and open the three dots menu at the top.___What do you think of the new Google+ insights panel?

Why Apple will make smart glasses

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/m74dRb )

It's easy to dismiss the speculation that Apple is working on smart glasses.

It's hard to picture Apple selling smart glasses. But it's also hard to picture them not doing it.

If smart glasses become a popular and mainstream consumer electronics category, Apple will almost be required to enter the market as a fiduciary responsibility to Apple shareholders.

Consider the plight of poor Apple. Smartphone margins are shrinking. The tablet market is flabby. Smartwatches aren't panning out as a mainstream platform. Apple TV is still not going to bring in huge profits. So Apple has to adapt and keep up with the evolution of consumer technology to continue to dominate the market as well as secure its growth.

Also, the choice of smartphone in the future may be dictated by the use of smart glasses. If mainstream smart glasses require an Android phone, Apple could lose market share.

What's certain is that Apple is working on smart glasses.

Here's exactly why I think Apple will actually make and sell smart glasses:

The solar panel that keeps me going

I had an amazing time in Cuba. It wasn't a vacation. I was working the whole time. So I needed to keep all my stuff charged. But the thing about places like Cuba is: So much sunshine; so few outlets to charge my phone, tablet and laptop. They don't have a Starbucks on every corner -- or any corner.

I can't tell you how many times I've found myself in some random country unable to charge my phone. Where do you do it?

Meanwhile, the sun is often beating down -- the sun, of course, is what Elon Musk called "that big fusion power plant in the sky."

The obvious solution is some way to charge using solar power.

The obvious solution is some way to charge using solar power.

Fortunately, I was using an eval unit of a really great product called the Solartab Solar Charger. It's a BAB (big-ass battery -- 9,000 mAh, actually) that can be charged by plugging it into an outlet -- or by exposing its solar panels to the sun.

I can charge anything that plugs in with USB (like my iPhone) or USB-C (like my Nexus 5x).

The truth is that I normally charge it in the wall, not the sun. But because I have the solar option, I never have to worry about running out of juice. And I really have needed it a few times.

Carrying the Solartab is just like carrying a tablet. It's got a cover, which can be used to prop it up to optimize the angle toward the sun. It's also rugged and waterproof, so you don't have to baby it when you're hiking or sailing.

Social networks let the rich buy influence

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/qxg3gj )

Social networking is the Great Equalizer. It enables anyone to gain influence based on the merit of his or her conversations.

Sadly, the quest for sustainable monetization is leading social sites to offer schemes that let people with money buy influence.

It's a disturbing trend, and I'll tell you exactly why at the end. But first, let's check out some examples.

Did you know that Google's anti-spam algorithms suppresses high-quality comments?

Everybody thinks engagement is low on Google+. But one reason is that Google itself is suppressing engagement.

Google's anti-spam algorithms instantly makes invisible a large number of comments to your posts. Some are spam. Some are high-quality comments.

You can see these with the current version of Google+. To see the comments Google is hiding from you, you have to go to the "Classic" version of Google+ (click on the link at the bottom left of your main Google+ screen in the browser version).

Did you know that Google's anti-spam algorithms suppresses high-quality comments?

Everybody thinks engagement is low on Google+. But one reason is that Google itself is suppressing engagement.

In my own case, I find that about a quarter to a third of the comments are perfectly good comments from users in good standing. Some of the suppressed comments are amazing.

In every case, the person who commented thinks everybody can see their comment, but nobody is responding. In fact, nobody ever saw their comment.

The screenshot here is from a post I did yesterday. A huge number of comments are awesome. And I would have never known about it if I hadn't gone in to the "Classic" version and checked this out.

I've complained about this several times and Google does nothing about it.

What we need are simple moderation tools in the new version that enable us to restore false positives.___

If you use Google Groups, I need your help!

Do you use Groups? https://groups.google.com/

If so, why?

What do you love about Groups? What do you dislike?

If you still use Gmail, why don't you switch to Inbox?

I think many of us use both. For example, I still use Gmail because I can find things. Sometimes I get an email, and it skips the inbox in Inbox for some reason, but Inbox doesn't seem to have an "All Mail" folder. So I open Gmail, click on the "All Mail" folder and find the message. Also: I like to set explicit rules, which I can do only in Gmail (even though the rules are applied in Inbox).

What about you? If you use Gmail, what keeps you from moving totally to Inbox?

(I'm hoping to compile a complete list of all the reasons why people stick to Gmail.)
