Wow. This car exists for movies and TV commercials to put a CGI car on top of.

It's called the Mill Blackbird.

They just change the wheels, adjust the length of the wheel base, then shoot the car in the scene. Later, they add the CGI car to the video.

Tech for the super lazy

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/Bz72Vh )

Why pick up after your dog when an internet startup will do it for you?

A company called PooperApp claims that, after your dog does his business, all you have to do is take a picture of the result using their Pooper app, press a button, and a "Scooper" (a freelance poop-removal professional) will drive to the location and remove the offending pile. Their slogan is: "Your dog's poop in someone else's hands."

That's just one of the new "lazy tech" products and services coming on the market.

Here are more products that make being lazy easier than ever:

Nothing lights up California sparkling wine and California peaches like that California sun.

This homemade peachy Bellini is good for my belly!

How you might be asking? Well, use real peaches and naturally fermented sparkling wine made with one ingredient: organic grapes. You get the goodness of real peaches and the probiotics from the natural fermentation from the wine.

It's still peach season in Provence and it made me think about the last Bellini I made in Santa Barbara from homegrown peaches from my sister-in-law's backyard. Have you tried a real Bellini? They're heavenly!

Peel fresh sweet peaches, remove pit, blend them until puréed, then add a tablespoon to a glass of a good natural prosseco, cava, sparkling wine or even champagne, whatever suits you fancy! 😘 I made mine using +Donkey & Goat Lily's Cuvée sparkling wine. Then drink up like there is no tomorrow! No, seriously, peach season is ending, it's now or next summer! 😁

Pokémon Go and the demon-haunted world

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/kYDlqZ )

Are Pokémon monsters really "digital demons"?

In Carl Sagan's 1995 book, "The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark," the author makes the case that science makes it impossible to believe in a world of invisible beings.

Now we can understand volcanic eruptions, for example, as natural phenomena caused by plate tectonics rather than the wrath of an angry volcano god lusting for human sacrifice.

Thanks, science!

But what science has destroyed, technology is creating anew.

Heavenly Mimolette!

+Amira Elgan made the mistake of bringing me with her to do food shopping. I dragged her into an awesome cheese shop and bought some more delicious cheese, including this incredible Mimolette.

This particular cheese was aged close to two years, and the aging process involves the cultivation of cheese mites, which nibble away at the rind, turning it grey and introducing incredible flavors and small holes that aerate the cheese. It's a cow-milk cheese colored and flavored with annatto.

Mimolette is associated with Lille, France, which is pretty much as far away as you can go in France from where I am, which is Aix-en-Provence.

Anyway, some FDA goobers in New Jersey tried to ban Mimolette in 2013 because of the cheese mites (which are present in smaller numbers on many aged cheeses), but American cheese enthusiasts publicly shamed... more »

Why Pokémon Go is a public menace

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/8EUdxG )

Everybody's talking about Pokémon Go, the world's first super popular augmented reality game. Sure, it's all fun and games—until somebody gets hurt.

Of course, there are good things about Pokémon Go. It's fun and entertaining, for example. It gets young people outside and interacting with each other, to a certain degree.

But for the most part, Pokémon Go is causing injuries, law-breaking, social friction and worse. Pokémon Go is a public menace.

You might be surprised to learn why:

How tech giants helped after the Bastille Day attack (and a French app didn't)

(Read my article at +Fast Company: http://goo.gl/FqrRbq )

When terror attacks, natural disasters, or big accidents occur, people in the danger zone need information about what to do and where to go. Family and friends of those affected seek out information about the safety of loved ones. And the public needs some way to discern fact from rumor as emergencies unfold.

Silicon Valley giants like Twitter, Facebook, and Google occasionally launch or update initiatives designed to help during emergencies. Governments increasingly embrace mobile technology to coordinate public safety.

But how effective are these products and services when disaster actually strikes?

Last week's Bastille Day truck attack in Nice, France, killed at least 84 people. The driver of the truck, identified as 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhle, was shot and killed by police.

So how did the alert and emergency information systems perform? I looked at four companies: Twitter, Facebook, Google, and a Paris-based company called Deveryware, which maintains the national alert app for the French government. Here's what I found:

Why Google Fi? Because it's fast, cheap and easy

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/2ATpv3 )

I'm a digital nomad.

When I started, services that catered to digital nomads were practically nonexistent. Over the years, several new categories of apps, internet-based services and other products have emerged to make my life easier.

One of the best of these services is Google's Project Fi, which I consider a must-use service for any digital nomad -- and it just got better. A lot better.

If you're a US resident and not using Google Fi, it's time to reconsider. Here's why:

Where's my single social stream?

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/G04FcG )

Social media moguls like Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg talk about uniting mankind through the power of social networking. Back in 2012, Zuckerberg wrote in a letter that accompanied Facebook's IPO paperwork that "Facebook... was built to accomplish a social mission — to make the world more open and connected."

That's a worthy mission, and it's hard to find any who who opposes it. We all want a more open and connected world, don't we?

So why is Facebook and everybody else working against this vision?

Here's what's happening:

Does anything like Friendfeed exist today?

Friendfeed brought all your social streams, as well as rss feeds, into a single stream.

Facebook bought Friendfeed and killed it.

Does anything like it exist anywhere? Is there a site, service or application that brings together all your social streams into a single stream?

I'm getting punished with spam again for buying something online.

Just bought a copper water bottle, and now I'm getting spammed with ads for copper water bottles. (At least I'm getting spammed a little less now for backpacks I already bought.)

I've got to figure out how to buy things anonymously. I see ads only for items I've already bought -- literally the things I'm least likely to buy again.

Google+ destroys Huawei for implying that a pro-quality DSLR image was taken with their phone

The Google+ community is the smartest, most knowledgeable and most critical community on the internet -- a fact Huawei learned the hard way.

Huawei implied that a photo taken with a bad-ass, $4,500 Canon EOS 5D Mark III was shot with their Huawei P9.

Twitter and Facebook lapped it up, but Google+ took them down, forcing Huawei to apologize, retract and clarify.

Nice, going, Google+.

Fear the future of fake followers

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/Sq4Buh )

A recent episode of the HBO TV series, "Silicon Valley," (spoiler alert) ends with the revelation that one member of the team saved the fictional startup by buying the services of a fake-user company in India.

It's a fascinating scene. The show's closing shot shows a room filled with cigarette-smoking Indian employees paid to use Pied Piper's app under fake accounts, just to boost the company's "Active Daily User" numbers.

In the real Silicon Valley, in fact, and across the IT industry, in general, the fake user problem is already troublesome, and it's about to get much worse.

Why wearables will replace your smartphone

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/RLmNad )

Smartphones are about to change completely, then fade away. Here comes the distributed, invisible user interface

The next iPhone won't have a headphone jack, if the leaks and rumors are true.

Some say: Good! The 3.5mm audio jack system is literally Victorian-era technology, a small version of the 6.35mm jack invented in 1878 for telephone operators. Removing the jack would make iPhones slimmer, simpler and more waterproof.

Others say: Bad! Killing the audio jack harms users, making decades of earbuds, headphones and other devices unusable without a klunky converter dongle. Plus, switching from analog headphone jacks to digital audio could lead to stricter DRM (digital rights management) and theoretically empower Apple to block unauthorized... more »

Plus, switching from analog headphone jacks to digital audio could lead to stricter DRM (digital rights management) and theoretically empower Apple to block unauthorized headphones.

Without the 3.5mm audio jack, iPhones will probably ship with either wireless, Bluetooth-connected earbuds (the company has trademarked "Airpods" via a shell company) or iPhones will come with earbuds that use the Lightning port. Or maybe both.

While we tech journalists bicker over audio jacks, something truly important is happening: Our smartphone user interfaces (UI) are becoming distributed and invisible. These trends will make the smartphone itself obsolete.

Just look at what's happening to earbuds.

Why Google Photos is awesome for everybody (including business people)

(Read my column http://goo.gl/EwWBsK )

Google's powerful but easy-to-use cloud service offers little-known features for business users, who can take photos as a way to capture information quickly.

Google Photos is a simple Website for storing, editing and sharing photos. But it's also one of the best tools for managers and businesspeople to get more out of photography.

The reason is that the site eliminates the last remaining costs for capturing information with a smartphone camera while expanding the benefits. Because of auto-backup and artificially intelligent search, you can add as many photos as you want without worrying about either running out of space or finding yourself unable to manage your pictures or find specific photos.

YouTube live mobile video changes everything

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/3bcbOE )

Google invented live-streaming video for the masses back in 2011.

It was presented as a feature of Google+, but was really all about YouTube. Called Hangouts On Air, the idea was to live-stream video with up to 10 participants. Unlike regular Hangouts, Hangouts On Air could turn a video chat into a public performance. Hangouts On Air streams could be instantly shared, meaning that you could share it while the video was in progress. After the live stream ended, the video was posted on YouTube for posterity.

There was just one problem: Hangouts On Air was desktop-only, not mobile. As we learned later, the ability to live stream from a phone is the killer feature for live videos.

Here's why YouTube live mobile video changes everything:

It's called the Mill Blackbird.

They just change the wheels, adjust the length of the wheel base, then shoot the car in the scene. Later, they add the CGI car to the video.

I just bought the best backpack I've ever seen

(Buy it here: https://goo.gl/CAfXRA )

Lowepro's ProTactic 450 AW Camera Backpack is the best backpack ever.

Out of the box, the inside is taken over by padded velcro-attached dividers. I have only one camera and one extra lens, so I only use about 1/4 of the interior for the camera.

It has great shoulder straps with a removable waistbelt (even the waistbelt has additional storage compartments).

It comes with all the modular accessories you see in this photo, has four access points to the main compartment and features a built-in rain cover and is covered top to bottom with external military-compatible molle loops.

I've added this to my Gear page: http://www.becomingnomad.com/gear/

But you can find it here on Amazon: https://goo.gl/CAfXRA
