What will change in social media by 2020?

I don't mean to alarm you, but that's 2.5 years away.

Will we all go off into increasingly tiny social networks?

Will social die?

Will Facebook kill off everything else?

Will Google+ have a resurgence?

Will Twitter go out of business?

What's going to happen over the next 2.5 years?

Why is Google+ is the #1 social network in “customer satisfaction”?

The American Customer Satisfaction Index released its 2017 e-business report yesterday, and Google+ comes out on top.

Here are the social networks ranked in order with their ACSI scores:

1. Google+ (81)
2. Pinterest (78)
3. Wikipedia (77)
4. Instagram (75)
5. YouTube (74)
6. Facebook (68)
7. Linkedin (65)

They measure this every year. The biggest gainers year-over-year are Twitter (jumped 8 points) and Google+ (7 points higher than last year). YouTube satisfaction dropped (by 4 points).

That Google+ beats Facebook and Twitter is old news. Google+ has always bested them. Two years ago, I posted on the annual report. Back then, Google+ was edged out only by Pinterest, Wikipedia, YouTube and Instagram. Since then, G+ has risen to the top ofeve... more »

That Google+ beats Facebook and Twitter is old news. Google+ has always bested them. Two years ago, I posted on the annual report. Back then, Google+ was edged out only by Pinterest, Wikipedia, YouTube and Instagram. Since then, G+ has risen to the top of everybody.

I’m a journalist, so let me emphasize the negative.

This is really nothing to celebrate, even for Google+ fans. The reality is that none of the social sites ranked in this index has gotten better, except for Instagram (“Stories” improved it) and possibly Twitter (their anti-harassment policies are marginally better.)

The truth is that Google+ isn’t as great as when it ranked lower. Google turned it from the Mother of All Social sites that could do anything into a kind of visual Reddit, de-emphasizing Circles and getting rid of the awesome Shared Circles feature. They spun out Hangouts. They got rid of Google+’s good photo editing tools and replace that with Google Photos’ bad editing tools. They decoupled Google+ from Gmail. And over the past 3 or 4 years, spammers and scammers and others came pouring in to degrade the quality of conversation.

Google+ is by far the best (and most satisfying) social network. But I suspect it’s not because users like it more. It’s because they like the other social networks less.

For example, I suspect Wikipedia is losing ground not because of the quality of Wikipedia, but because people increasingly dislike being confronted with facts that challenge their existing beliefs. Wikipedia doesn’t belong on a list of social networks (Reddit should replace it). But since it’s here, it should be ranked highest.

In other words, what the top-two sites (Google+ and Pinterest) have in common is that they both prioritize the individual passions and interests people have – they both enable users to self-select into communities where people broadly agree with each other – unlike networks where people who disagree are encouraged to seek out and clash with each other.

In a better social world, debating contentious issues in a “public square” setting should satisfy. But it doesn’t, largely because of weaponized news, propaganda, fake news and the prevailing political culture of partisanship, ideology and tribalism above reason and fact.

The social network universe is in sad state right now. The two social networks that dominate with active user counts, Facebook and Facebook’s Instagram, also rank highest in their abilities to make users miserable, according to science.

Instagram has ignited a global arms race of success theater, where people are completely re-arranging their lives in order to photograph and share “instagrammable moments.” That competition has prioritized performance over experience, and it makes me throw up in my mouth a little.

The media continues to obsess over and champion Twitter, artificially inflating its value or importance.

Trolls, bots, paid-propagandists, morons and haters wreck Twitter replies. The world of YouTube comments is still a vapid cesspool.

Popularity contest sites like Instagram, Twitter and YouTube shower the few with fame, influence and money, while the majority of users languish in obscurity.

Secret algorithms quietly censor discourse beyond the understanding of users, and companies skew our streams for profit. (There’s no money in giving users all the control. That’s why Google killed Google Reader.)

And the top two, Google+ and Pinterest, remain gender-imbalanced.

So, yes, Google+ is the best (and most satisfying) social network. It has been since the beginning.

But, no, it’s not because Google+ has gotten better. It’s because some of the other social networks have remained bad or gotten worse. And the larger world of conversation in our culture has become toxic.

The good news is that sites like Google+ still enable us to create our own communities where we can cultivate the kind of social interaction we need. And that’s pretty satisfying.

Why 'experiental' marketing will be a massive IT challenge

Marketing is all about experiences now; to succeed it will need the two-letter technologies: AR, VR and A.I. And to scale it will need smartphones, selfies, live-streaming and social media.

Who wants an Amazon messaging app?

Amazon is asking people about a possible messaging app called "Anytime." It looks like a cross between WhatsApp, Twitter and Instagram. It would be encrypted, cross-platform, enable calls and video chat and enable apps, including games.

What's your reaction?

If you're interested in skate culture, check out my Uncle John's new book!

It's called "Anti Gravity Device Company." The book is a memoir and history of John's involvement in skate culture in Hawaii and California in the 70s, 80s and 90s (including as a designer and builder of insane ramps and skate parks).

This book is a must read for skate and extreme sports fans, as well as anyone interested in the history of 20th Century California -- an instant skate lit classic.

(Full disclosure, author +John Oliver is my mother's brother and his editor on the project was my brother, +Adam Khan.)

The augmented reality boom will transform phones (and everything else, too)

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/6SLpYn )

Augmented reality is frivolous, we're told. It's mainly for gimmicks and games.

But an important transformation is about to get under way. Starting next year, AR will begin transforming enterprise communications, logistics, manufacturing, analytics, product design, training, marketing, field service and more.

Today's phones and tablets aren't quite up to the task. But tomorrow's will be.

Everybody will be surprised when the obvious and inevitable happens -- when the capabilities and performance of AR on phones and tablets becomes the reason to buy one brand of phone over another. You can bet that smartphone makers will then innovate with new hardware features to boost AR.

It's actually already happening. Silicon Valley is suddenly exploding with chatter about an industry-wide race to optimize smartphones for AR.

Here's what industry nerds are whispering about

Can anyone explain Apple’s new Podcast app?

The new Podcast app in iOS 11 seems unusable.

In the previous version, you would subscribe to podcasts, and when the new episodes came in, you listened to the first one, and it would automatically place the next, then the next.

As far as I can tell, the new version in IOS requires you to tap and hold on each episode, then select from a menu the placement of that episode on some kind of playlist.

No way I’m going to do that.

Avoid the mouse trap: Old habits wreck new tech

Don't look now, but your desktop user interface dates back to the Nixon administration. Is it time to upgrade to the next UI?

New technologies revolutionize business. And big shifts like artificial intelligent (AI) virtual assistants and augmented reality seem to have gone from "someday" technologies, to "happening right now."

These technologies are expected to transform business for the better. And I believe they will -- far more than we realize. These new systems come with powerful new user interfaces. There's just one problem: People don't like new interfaces — and cling to the old, inefficient ones.

If someone made a mouse and driver, how would the driver work? Would Apple have to build the driver?

Who knows all about this?

I don't mean to alarm you, but that's 2.5 years away.

Will we all go off into increasingly tiny social networks?

Will social die?

Will Facebook kill off everything else?

Will Google+ have a resurgence?

Will Twitter go out of business?

What's going to happen over the next 2.5 years?

Why you want to run away

Admit it: You just want to run away sometimes.

That “run away” feeling is just a normal, temporary impulse — a reaction to the frustrations and banality of everyday life.

It passes, though. Soon enough, you come to your senses and remember all the reasons why you can’t run away.

But here’s a thought: What if that impulse is right? What if you actually should follow your instinct to run away? And what if all the reasons you think you can’t are wrong?

How TV and social media drive fear-based politics

I'm going to give you three words, which we all need to remember, that explains the insanity of political discourse these days. Ready? Here they are:

"Mean World Syndrome"

This idea was developed by the late Communications professor, George Gerbner.

"Mean World Syndrome" = people think the world is far more dangerous and violent than it really is because of TV fear-mongering.

Gerbner died in 2005, but his theory holds true especially for social media.

Gerbner is most famous for his Cultivation theory, which says that the more people watch TV, the more they believe the version of "reality" they see on TV matches actual reality.

"Mean World Syndrome" is part of that. After watching TV (and descending into the rabbit hole accidentally constructed from algorithm-based sorting and filtering of online content) for days, months and years, individual people come to believe that the world is on fire, wracked with violence and horror.

Of course, violence and horror does exist out there. But the human mind has no metric for processing videos and images and stories cherry picked from the world's worst events, then condensed into a daily "information" diet.

How bad is it?

In other words, TV and the Internet SHOW us vastly more bad stuff than ever before. To what extent does that result from changes is the amount of bad stuff, or changes in the ability of the world to show us bad stuff?

According to the "Mean World Syndrome" theory, with the rise of cable news and the rise of social media and online video, people should believe that the world is vastly more dangerous that it used to be. And in fact many or most people do believe that.

The reality is that the world is far safer and less dangerous, violent, poor and horrible than it's ever been. In fact, NYT columnist +Nicholas Kristof (who is an active Google+ user, by the way) said this week that "2017 is likely to be the best year in the history of humanity."

https://plus.google.com/+NicholasKristof/posts/Y7UcrwU1vDM

This general view is backed up by the date on the massively declining rates of deaths by war and violence over the last few centuries. In fact, we're living in the most peaceful time in human history.

https://ourworldindata.org/slides/war-and-violence/

Back to politics: "Mean World Syndrome" changes a person's mindset. Specifically, people with "Mean World Syndrome"...

1. Have a heightened sense of insecurity

2. Are more likely to believe that violence is a solution to problems

3. Are more easily manipulated and controlled; and

4. Are more susceptible to to simple, strong, "hard line" solutions to political problems

Does all this sound familiar?

I do all my political arguing on Twitter (you're welcome). And all this time I thought I had been bickering with bigoted trolls. But then it occurred to me that in fact I'm arguing against people who are suffering from "Mean World Syndrome."

It started when someone responded to something I said with a video supposedly contrasting France in the 1970s with France now.

The 1970s France in this video was a paradise of peace and happiness. The "now" version was a compilation of violence, conflict and squalor associated with migrants and Muslims.

"Mean World Syndrome" convinces a person (according to Cultivation theory) that this contrasting view accurately reflects reality.

Trouble is, I've been living in France for a couple weeks. I come here often. And as someone who does walk around and sees France with my own eyes but who does not obsess over the most horrible videos I can find on the Internet and who does not watch TV news, my view of France does not reflect the video I was shown.

Also: Most people I know believe that terrorism in Europe is at an all-time high. In fact, it's far lower than it's been. Here are the facts:

http://www.datagraver.com/case/people-killed-by-terrorism-per-year-in-western-europe-1970-2015

As you can see, terrorism in Europe peaked during the 70s, during the time this video depicted as heaven.

Just to be very clear, and to try to head off pointless bickering over immigration in the comments here, I'm saying nothing about immigration policy. Whether you think France should stop all immigration forever and deport current immigrants — or not — it's clearly true that France is not a cesspool of chaos, terror and squalor everywhere all the time, as the video suggests — or as TV news and social media suggests.

It also appears to be clearly true that thousands or millions of people believe France is on fire, and because they got that impression in a way that can only be explained by Cultivation theory and "Mean World Syndrome."

The real political conflict that matters to me most right now is between "Mean World Syndrome" sufferers and people who stick to the facts.

(Trigger warning, I'm about to use the "T word," so if you can't resist descending into partisan bickering instead of sticking to the topic of this post, please leave the room.)

Trump obviously gets news from TV news. His most politically damaging Twitter activity appears to be little more than Trump responding on Twitter to what he sees on the cable news shows like Fox & Friends.

http://www.mediaite.com/online/president-trumps-post-london-attack-tweets-completely-in-synch-with-fox-friends-commentary/

I believe the president suffers from "Mean World Syndrome" because he obsesses over TV news. (And the daily briefings can't help.)

Meanwhile, he attacks mainstream news organizations as "fake news," while praising the National Enquirer and quoting Alex Jones.

This battle is not between conservatives and liberals, but between "Mean World Syndrome" people and facts people.

I'm not one to be neutral between the fire brigade and the fire. The facts people must prevail, because clearly facts are an infinitely better basis on which to make decisions and solve problems than an "impression" given by exposure to cherry-picked imagery.

The most pressing issue of our time is: What's the cure for "Mean World Syndrome"?

What do YOU think?

#meanworldsyndrome

Google wants to kill your phone

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/mtQCzC )

Google is working hard to make phones obsolete.

The company wouldn't admit this. And they don't want me to say it. They still have to make nice with mobile phone carriers who support and sell Android phones.

In getting rid of the phone as we know it, Google is both on the right side of history and also on your company's side. The post-phone world is a world with higher-quality voice communication, better security and telephony services that work better than today's communication apps.

Here's what Google is up to.

Does anyone know how the F Project Fi works?

I read one report that said Fi favors Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular and Wifi — in that order.

I read another that said Fi favors WiFi, and if that's not acceptable, it seeks out the best mobile broadband connection.

Google says it just "finds the best connection."

I've also read that Fi does a hand-off from WiFi to cellular, but not the other way around.

Does anyone know the answers to these questions?

Do we really need "phones" anymore?

A smartphone has two basic channels for communication. One is the "phone" part, which involves your phone number and which you can use to make calls and send text messages over the "phone" network.

The second part is the mobile broadband data connection and WiFi connection, which plugs you into the Internet.

Increasingly, people are using apps for communicating over the Internet connections, not the "phone" connections.

Do we really need the "phone" part anymore? Don't we just need internet access?

If so, what's the difference between the "regular" version and the Google Cloud version?

I wasn't expecting monkeys

After driving across desolate and almost lifeless Moroccan deserts for hours late last month, we drove up a small mountain, which was forested.

At the peak, there was a rest stop with a few souvenir shops. And monkeys were everywhere. Monkeys!

They even had this kiosk where you could buy peanuts for 50 cents to feed the monkeys. But the monkeys helped themselves without paying.
