Why Pokémon Go is a public menace

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/8EUdxG )

Everybody's talking about Pokémon Go, the world's first super popular augmented reality game. Sure, it's all fun and games—until somebody gets hurt.

Of course, there are good things about Pokémon Go. It's fun and entertaining, for example. It gets young people outside and interacting with each other, to a certain degree.

But for the most part, Pokémon Go is causing injuries, law-breaking, social friction and worse. Pokémon Go is a public menace.

You might be surprised to learn why:

Cameras everywhere make the world a better place!

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/cVzsl9 )

Smile! Cameras are everywhere now.

Thanks to smartphones, just about everybody carries a high-quality camera and an instantaneous way to share photos and videos with the world. Our laptops have cameras. Our drones have cameras. ATMs, intersections, police cars and street corners have cameras. Businesses have security cameras. Even a new generation of smart doorbells has cameras.

The debate over ubiquitous cameras normally centers on a trade-off between privacy and security. The idea is that cameras enhance our security, so the more, the better. But they violate our privacy, so the fewer the better. How do we achieve a balance?

That's an interesting debate. But I'm not going to rehash it in this column. Instead, I'd like to focus on the... more »

That's an interesting debate. But I'm not going to rehash it in this column. Instead, I'd like to focus on the under-appreciated dichotomy between despair and justice.

Because all these cameras make us believe the world is worse than it actually is, while simultaneously making it actually better.

Google Glass strikes back!

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/FU4sRd )

The single most innovative wearable of all time has to be Google Glass.

Yeah, I said it. And it's true.

If you read the tech blogs, you'd be forgiven for believing that Google Glass is a failed product, dead and gone. But in fact, the opposite is true.

The Google Glass Explorer program succeeded wildly. Google is feverishly working on new kinds of Google Glass products, and the innovation around Google Glass never stopped.

Forget the tech press's false narrative around Google Glass. Here's what's happening with one of the most revolutionary products ever.

Google Photos is amazing

I took a bad picture with my iPhone of a broken-framed photo of me as a kid at my mom's house. The photo is black-and-white. The frame is broken. There's glare. And I'm like 5 or something.

Google Photos recognized me.

Incredible.

In defense of social networking elitism

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/vCORIv )

The social web is the most egalitarian medium in history. It's also overrun by trolls, haters, misogynists, racists and bullies.

Coincidence? I think not.

In his 1994 book, "In Defense of Elitism," author William A. Henry III made the shocking claim that our longstanding myth of egalitarianism is dumbing down America.

Egalitarianism is great in theory, but ill-advised in practice. (That's why we don't actually practice it, except for on social networking sites.)

I think it's time for Henry's defense of elitism to be applied to social networking.

Here's why:

What it's like to experience the internet

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/98l3ye )

What do Snapchat stories, Pokémon Go, Facebook live video and virtual reality all have in common?

Two words: virtual experience.

In his book, The Inevitable: Understanding the 12 Technological Forces That Will Shape Our Future (Amazon), author Kevin Kelly talks about the "internet of experiences," where the internet will increasingly become more about virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence-as-a-service, rather than the old "internet of information" that it's been since the beginning.

Kelly is right. His "internet of experiences" is inevitable. But why?

Here's what you need to know about the public's growing obsession with experience:

What's in your food? Tech will tell!

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/1bB4oB )

People are getting more interested in what they're eating, but reading a food label will tell you only so much. Some foods -- fresh fruits and vegetables, for example -- don't have ingredient labels.

In a perfect world, food labels would tell you unambiguously and transparently what's inside the package -- what you're really eating. Unfortunately, today's food labels tell only part of the story.

The good news is that new apps and new gadgets can bypass food labels and tell you what's REALLY in the food you're eating.

Where has all the social engagement gone?

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/IJDxCP )

Is social networking dying as a way to engage the public, drive traffic and build brand? I'm hearing a lot of complaints about this. But is this true?

Clearly, the world of social has changed radically in the past six months. And it's harder than ever to rise above the noise, be heard and promote one's brand (either professional or personal).

What you need to know -- and do -- right now:

Is it dumb to trust smart technology?

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/gEQLuC )

Did we learn nothing from Arthur C. Clarke's 1968 sci-fi epic, 2001: A Space Odyssey?

In the film, astronauts on a mission to Jupiter discover that the HAL 9000 artificial intelligence computer that controls and automates all functions on the spacecraft starts seriously glitching. The astronauts get worried, HAL gets paranoid -- yada, yada, yada -- HAL kills everyone on the ship.

The moral of the story is that when lives depend on fully automated systems, it's a good idea to keep an eye on those systems anyway. (And if that's not the moral of the story, it should have been.)

How do you use something that's fully automatic, anyway? What is the responsibility of the "user"? Can we just hand over control to the bots?

Recent events in the news suggest that when it comes to using our automatic products and features, some people are doing it wrong.

This garden robot will pay for itself in one year

The Open Source FarmBot does it all, from planting seeds to watering to monitoring the soil to snuffing out weeds without pesticides. Best of all, the FarmBot enables people to grow fresh, organic produce in a way that’s environmentally friendly and costs far less than buying veggies at the store. What’s not to love? Here’s my conversation with FarmBot founder Rory Aronson.

How to really, truly "think outside the box"

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/3anzfm )

"Think outside the box" is an old, tired cliché. It emerged in the 1960s, and was quickly and thoroughly expropriated by so-called management gurus.

The "box" originated as the classic "Nine Eggs" puzzle, also known as the "Nine Dots" puzzle.

In business circles, the box is metaphorical, and represents conditioned, expected, conventional thinking. And, it turns out, thinking outside that box is a great idea.

But it's hard.

Here's how to learn from opinion columnists, comedians and magicians about "thinking outside the box":

Tech for the super lazy

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/Bz72Vh )

Why pick up after your dog when an internet startup will do it for you?

A company called PooperApp claims that, after your dog does his business, all you have to do is take a picture of the result using their Pooper app, press a button, and a "Scooper" (a freelance poop-removal professional) will drive to the location and remove the offending pile. Their slogan is: "Your dog's poop in someone else's hands."

That's just one of the new "lazy tech" products and services coming on the market.

Here are more products that make being lazy easier than ever:

Nothing lights up California sparkling wine and California peaches like that California sun.

This homemade peachy Bellini is good for my belly!

How you might be asking? Well, use real peaches and naturally fermented sparkling wine made with one ingredient: organic grapes. You get the goodness of real peaches and the probiotics from the natural fermentation from the wine.

It's still peach season in Provence and it made me think about the last Bellini I made in Santa Barbara from homegrown peaches from my sister-in-law's backyard. Have you tried a real Bellini? They're heavenly!

Peel fresh sweet peaches, remove pit, blend them until puréed, then add a tablespoon to a glass of a good natural prosseco, cava, sparkling wine or even champagne, whatever suits you fancy! 😘 I made mine using +Donkey & Goat Lily's Cuvée sparkling wine. Then drink up like there is no tomorrow! No, seriously, peach season is ending, it's now or next summer! 😁

Pokémon Go and the demon-haunted world

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/kYDlqZ )

Are Pokémon monsters really "digital demons"?

In Carl Sagan's 1995 book, "The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark," the author makes the case that science makes it impossible to believe in a world of invisible beings.

Now we can understand volcanic eruptions, for example, as natural phenomena caused by plate tectonics rather than the wrath of an angry volcano god lusting for human sacrifice.

Thanks, science!

But what science has destroyed, technology is creating anew.

Heavenly Mimolette!

+Amira Elgan made the mistake of bringing me with her to do food shopping. I dragged her into an awesome cheese shop and bought some more delicious cheese, including this incredible Mimolette.

This particular cheese was aged close to two years, and the aging process involves the cultivation of cheese mites, which nibble away at the rind, turning it grey and introducing incredible flavors and small holes that aerate the cheese. It's a cow-milk cheese colored and flavored with annatto.

Mimolette is associated with Lille, France, which is pretty much as far away as you can go in France from where I am, which is Aix-en-Provence.

Anyway, some FDA goobers in New Jersey tried to ban Mimolette in 2013 because of the cheese mites (which are present in smaller numbers on many aged cheeses), but American cheese enthusiasts publicly shamed... more »

But how effective are these products and services when disaster actually strikes?

Last week's Bastille Day truck attack in Nice, France, killed at least 84 people. The driver of the truck, identified as 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhle, was shot and killed by police.

So how did the alert and emergency information systems perform? I looked at four companies: Twitter, Facebook, Google, and a Paris-based company called Deveryware, which maintains the national alert app for the French government. Here's what I found:

Why Google Fi? Because it's fast, cheap and easy

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/2ATpv3 )

I'm a digital nomad.

When I started, services that catered to digital nomads were practically nonexistent. Over the years, several new categories of apps, internet-based services and other products have emerged to make my life easier.

One of the best of these services is Google's Project Fi, which I consider a must-use service for any digital nomad -- and it just got better. A lot better.

If you're a US resident and not using Google Fi, it's time to reconsider. Here's why:
