Children's computer kit runs Amazon's Alexa!

Full disclosure: My son, +Kevin Elgan, recently joined the awesome San Francisco-based startup Piper, which makes an amazing $299 computer kit for kids.

The kit uses Minecraft to teach kids how to build the computer itself, then use the computer they built to learn about electronics and programming.

Piper is fun, but not a toy. It's a real computer (based on Raspberry Pi). My son last night put Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant on a Piper computer.

Fanny pack phone holder is the worst accessory ever

The Handee Holder is a fanny pack with a telescoping phone holder, so you can watch and use your phone hands-free.

Do I have to spell out why this is horrible? OK:

1. It's a bulky, complicated wearable contraption that does nothing but hold your phone.

2. It's a fucking fanny pack.

3. It looks like you've got an erection with a phone attached to it.

Please don't fund this!

Apple's iMessage finally grows up

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/s1oyHM )

Apple is finally taking on Snapchat, WeChat and Slack.

Wait, what?

When iOS 10 appeared on Tuesday, it featured a long list of enhancements. The biggest news is the transformation of Apple's messaging service, iMessage, into a full-fledged, modern messaging platform.

As with so many things, Apple is an exception to industry norms. The new iMessage will become far more than just another messaging service. It changes everything.

Here's how:

An iMessage app called GrammarSnob lets you correct people

The new iMessage, which was updated at the same time as the new iOS 10, along with the Messages app, enables you to drag and drop stickers anywhere in the conversation. So an iMessage sticker app called GrammarSnob lets you drop cross outs, line outs and other negating markup, along with common things that people get wrong.

The result is that you can take an annoying red pencil to your conversations.

Why you should invite A.I. to all your meetings!

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/743Yh1 )

Only humans can have meetings, sadly.

But some of the clerical work associated with organizing and documenting meetings now might be outsourced to artificially intelligent machines.

Wait, you might say. Isn't artificial intelligence for big tasks such as self-driving cars, automated trading and facial recognition?

Once the stuff of science fiction, AI is quickly becoming widespread, available and even commoditized. While AI eventually will play a much larger role in just about everything we all do, the first AI application you touch almost certainly will perform tedious, relatively minor tasks. I'll tell you at the end of this column why business meeting AI is a great model for the future of the partnership between humans and computers. But first, let's check out the new generation of meeting helpers that use AI.

When A.I. whispers in your ear all day

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/5BL90X )

Technology is democratizing.

Over the past 30 years, tools once reserved for presidents, spies, generals and media moguls have been made available cheaply to billions. Wireless communication. GPS. Satellite photography. Streaming live video to a global audience used to cost millions. Now, it's free and you could be doing it in five seconds if you wanted to.

Every great leader, from presidents to CEOs, is surrounded by trusted advisors who guide and inform at every step. Successful leaders often succeed in part because they have better advice or better information. And now, even advice and guidance is being distributed to a mass market.

This A.I. will talk to us -- and we'll talk back. It will know everything about us, understand our current situation at all times and provide helpful guidance and information.

A.I. is software, of course. So what's the hardware? When it comes to A.I. virtual assistant software, I think it's clear that the hardware is: digital wireless earbuds.

Watch out for these tech words with multiple meanings!

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/7lh9aj )

Words have meaning. But sometimes two people can disagree over the meaning of a word. In which case, that word has two meanings.

This is crucially important in the workplace and in business. We use words to negotiate contracts, hire staff, set objectives and formulate action plans. If we disagree over the meanings of the words we use, bad things can happen. Projects can fail. Business relationships can sour. People can lose their jobs.

The problem is acute in tech circles. For example, what is a "backdoor," exactly? Because technology evolves rapidly, the words we use to describe technology ideas and phenomena often don't have time to settle on a universally agreed-upon meaning.

Here are some of the most commonly used words in technology... more »

Here come 'Awareness of Things' gadgets

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/SLaHTj )

A new class of mobile device is tiny, cheap and gives you total information awareness about your stuff.

These devices aren't wearables because you don't wear them. They're not "Internet of Things" devices because they don't have IP addresses. And they don't enhance the normal functionality of a smartphone like, say, Bluetooth earbuds or a tiny projector. Even more intriguing is that the actual functionality of these gadgets is very specific, but can be applied creatively to a huge number of jobs.

So what are they?

I'm talking about tiny, inexpensive sensor-based devices that work with a smartphone to keep you informed about what's going on with your projects, hobbies or other stuff.

Inside Amazon's, Facebook's and Google's self-serving 'philanthropy'

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/NNrbT9 )

Technology companies tend to couch their products not as businesses for profit, but as gifts to humanity.

The HBO comedy Silicon Valley so thoroughly mocked this impulse that I heard companies in the valley ordered their spokespeople to stop using the phrase "making the world a better place."

For the biggest tech giants, faux philanthropy masks an obvious customer acquisition strategy:

Cameras everywhere make the world a better place!

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/cVzsl9 )

Smile! Cameras are everywhere now.

Thanks to smartphones, just about everybody carries a high-quality camera and an instantaneous way to share photos and videos with the world. Our laptops have cameras. Our drones have cameras. ATMs, intersections, police cars and street corners have cameras. Businesses have security cameras. Even a new generation of smart doorbells has cameras.

The debate over ubiquitous cameras normally centers on a trade-off between privacy and security. The idea is that cameras enhance our security, so the more, the better. But they violate our privacy, so the fewer the better. How do we achieve a balance?

That's an interesting debate. But I'm not going to rehash it in this column. Instead, I'd like to focus on the under-appreciated dichotomy between despair and justice.

Because all these cameras make us believe the world is worse than it actually is, while simultaneously making it actually better.

Google Glass strikes back!

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/FU4sRd )

The single most innovative wearable of all time has to be Google Glass.

Yeah, I said it. And it's true.

If you read the tech blogs, you'd be forgiven for believing that Google Glass is a failed product, dead and gone. But in fact, the opposite is true.

The Google Glass Explorer program succeeded wildly. Google is feverishly working on new kinds of Google Glass products, and the innovation around Google Glass never stopped.

Forget the tech press's false narrative around Google Glass. Here's what's happening with one of the most revolutionary products ever.

In defense of social networking elitism

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/vCORIv )

The social web is the most egalitarian medium in history. It's also overrun by trolls, haters, misogynists, racists and bullies.

Coincidence? I think not.

In his 1994 book, "In Defense of Elitism," author William A. Henry III made the shocking claim that our longstanding myth of egalitarianism is dumbing down America.

Egalitarianism is great in theory, but ill-advised in practice. (That's why we don't actually practice it, except for on social networking sites.)

I think it's time for Henry's defense of elitism to be applied to social networking.

Here's why:

What it's like to experience the internet

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/98l3ye )

What do Snapchat stories, Pokémon Go, Facebook live video and virtual reality all have in common?

Two words: virtual experience.

In his book, The Inevitable: Understanding the 12 Technological Forces That Will Shape Our Future (Amazon), author Kevin Kelly talks about the "internet of experiences," where the internet will increasingly become more about virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence-as-a-service, rather than the old "internet of information" that it's been since the beginning.

Kelly is right. His "internet of experiences" is inevitable. But why?

What's in your food? Tech will tell!

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/1bB4oB )

People are getting more interested in what they're eating, but reading a food label will tell you only so much. Some foods -- fresh fruits and vegetables, for example -- don't have ingredient labels.

In a perfect world, food labels would tell you unambiguously and transparently what's inside the package -- what you're really eating. Unfortunately, today's food labels tell only part of the story.

The good news is that new apps and new gadgets can bypass food labels and tell you what's REALLY in the food you're eating.

Where has all the social engagement gone?

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/IJDxCP )

Is social networking dying as a way to engage the public, drive traffic and build brand? I'm hearing a lot of complaints about this. But is this true?

Clearly, the world of social has changed radically in the past six months. And it's harder than ever to rise above the noise, be heard and promote one's brand (either professional or personal).

What you need to know -- and do -- right now:
