The Weather Channel3,076,010*Upload your photos to this Event on 9/19 or using the #sunsetday hashtag in a public post to celebrate #sunsetday!* Join us for an exciting 24-hour event as we send summer into the sunset in global fashion. We are asking our Google+ audience from around the world to grab your favorite camera on the evening of September 19 and snap your own unique sunset from your corner of the globe. We want to see all types of sunsets in a variety of settings; a city skyline, a beach resort, a beautiful countryside, a desert landscape, a dense forest. *Wherever you may be, please share/upload your sunset image with this event page on September 19.* You can also participate outside of this event page by submitting a public photo post and tagging with #sunsetday. A select number of our favorite photos will be shown on The Weather Channel and accompany a slideshow on weather.com. Other favorites will be posted and rotated through as the cover photo on both +The Weather Channel and the +Google+ Photos  Google+ page. Note: *Only photos uploaded and posted to the event page or associated with the hashtag #sunsetday on Sep 19 will be considered* We hosted two Hangouts On Air in preparation for Sunset Day. The first hangout focused on the meteorology behind sunsets including the reason behind the beautiful array of colors.  The second hangout concentrated on the art of sunset photography. Expert photographers well known to the Google+ community talked about their techniques in capturing the perfect sunset. Links to both HOA videos are posted below. *HANGOUT SCHEDULE* 1. Mike Runyon28,880While I realize a lot of people have to work on President's Day, it is worth while asking for the day off. The traffic is considerably less and the crowds are diminished, making for far more photo opportunities. All those who can attend can meet just inside the main gate as there's a large area to gather and then proceed on through the event. There is a lot to see and do, as well as some great food to go with! There are numerous shows and great displays and has been quite the fun time all the years I've attended. You can buy tickets at the main entrance or you can usually pick up discount tickets at Fry's groceries. http://royalfaires.com/arizona/ Even though you may not be able to attend, please share this with any and all you think might be interested in the event!Arizona Renaissance Festival President's Day Photowalk2013-02-18 18:00:0020

russ vallelunga29,283Sycamore is the second largest canyon in the Red Rock District of Coconino National Forest (the first being Oak Creek), but is lesser known, and less traveled.  It's also more pristine, less populated by 'venturers', and friendlier to unspoiled~nature photographic scenes.  A riparian habitat in the desert, the subjects to photograph range from macro to landscape.  30 minutes out of Cottonwood, Az, a light decent of 200 feet leads to a level, sandy hiking trail   I'm staging a 'hiking' photowalk here, September 16th (alternate date, Sept. 30th if the 16th turns out to be unsuitable due to weather).   This is wilderness habitat.  The trail is mostly sandy and smooth, but sturdy shoes are needed. Bring at least 2 quarts of water per person (or purification tablets for the natural springwater); pack a non-perishable lunch, plus snacks.  There are *no* toilet facilities in the wilderness. I will bring a light shovel and a couple rolls of TP; we shall be considerate in covering any natural wastes and elsewise packing out what we pack in.  Animal subjects may include Golden eagles, mountain lions, bobcats, badgers, great blue herons, and black bears (most are elusive, but it could happen) and certainly smaller birds, squirrels, rabbits, and reptiles.  Natural subjects include miniwaterfalls, sandy waterways with moss and fungi, and water pools bathed in red-rock reflections.   Flora subjects include cottonwood, sycamore, and Arizona walnut trees, & a variety of wildflowers, vines, moss and fungi.  The photowalk will end about 2 miles in, at a pool of water about the size of an Olympic sized pool, surrounded by rocks of many colors. You're invited to camp out overnight at the trailhead for an early start/meet & greet  (campfires may be prohibited--bring a camping stove, or cooler for chilled foods).  There's no moon on the 16th, so I will offer assistance in astro-photography if desired.   Morning travelers to the event should use a travel site such as googlemaps or mapquest to determine at what time in the wee-hours of the morning they will need to leave from their location to arrive by 7:30am, then leave 1/2 hour earlier (just to be sure).  Those arriving late are welcomed to follow down the well-marked trail to catch up with the group.  Photowalk: Parson's Trail, Sycamore Canyon, Az2012-09-16 16:00:0011

Stuck Already!
Only 3-4 hours old and already this young wild colt has discovered cactus! It seemed to bother him quite a bit and he couldn't figure how to get it off.
I really had the urge to try helping him, but was pretty sure mom would frown on that. Hope he managed to rid himself of it!

Infrared Wisconsin Lake
In the mid '80's I had a brief fascination with Kodak's color infrared transparency films. This was shot at a lake in Wisconsin while on vacation.
It was a bit of fun to use as it turned anything with chlorophile in it to shades of red while retaining the blues of the sky.

Lightning Over Phoenix-1985
One of the first 2 lightning shots I ever took. From North Mountain Park overlooking downtown Phoenix. It was pretty dark and I didn't even see the people sitting on the bench in front of me till I get the film developed. It's a lot easier to do these days with digital.
Canon A1, 50mm Agfachrome 100 RS @ approximately f/22 and around 25 sec exposure on bulb. Agfachrome RS-100, tripod & cable release.

Fillet Mignon For Sunday Dinner
Grilled up a couple of fillet mignons for dinner last night. +marit runyon likes hers (the steak on the left) like she likes her chicken, extra crispy! I prefer some flavor to mine, medium rare, pink and juicy on the inside, so I end up starting hers several minutes before mine.
There are a few restaurants in town that will bring you a smoking boot if you order a steak as well done as she likes it, but I try to accommodate her.
Not too sure about hers, but my steak was totally delicious!

Bathing Big Blue
After washing +marit runyon's Mustang last Sunday I decided it was time to wash mine, since it had been several months. That's not as bad as it sounds, since it spends any rainy days in the garage, but it does pick up some garage dust.
I thought it might be fun to make a sequence of the procedure. When doing interior cleaning, it helps that it's a convertible. I always start with vacuuming, then dusting, wash the motor (a clean motor is a happy motor) then the top & body, followed by wheels & tires and windows.

Liking Windows 10
After getting out several little bugs on my pc and +marit runyon"s  laptop, I'm beginning to really like Windows 10, with the exception of the Microsoft's Edge browser, which seems to hang up a bunch and is really slow. I just dumped it and replaced it with Chrome, which really runs quite well on Windows 10!
I can see why Microsoft sets up Edge as the default when you do an install, since it pretty much sucks in comparison to Chrome and also why the majority of Windows 10 installations are apparently not running Edge!

“A Revisionist Nightmare”
While the revisionist censors seem to want to ban everything having anything to do with the Confederate States, such as the movie “Gone With The Wind” for its reference to slavery and the Confederate flag, as well as any display of that flag and Confederate monuments, I’m just waiting for them to want to ban the movie “Gettysburg”! Running at 4 hours and 23 minutes, it seems almost as long as the actual 3 day engagement in 1863, from July 1 through July 3.
While the censorship types don’t much like “Gone With The Wind”, “Gettysburg” does also make mention of slavery, although the majority of the Confederate troops didn’t own slaves and were actually fighting for “States Rights”, to be free of the imposition of various arbitrary dictates of the Washington Federal government, rather like today. There is also prominent display of various Confederate flags, so many that I lost count after the first 10 minutes, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the revisionist types will want to ban this movie. as well.
Watching the movie, I didn’t think of the slavery issue, but rather the courage and sacrifice of both sides in fighting for their beliefs. I don’t think there are many today that would march headlong into withering musket and cannon fire in line formation. That was courage, no matter the color of the uniform or what flag they were carrying!
So the radicals out there can try banning another movie, maybe some books and tear down some monuments, but it all still happened and it’s part of the culture, till the time comes when they’ve rewritten the history books and destroyed any reference to that period of time. Much like the radical terrorists are attempting in the Middle East!

Working At The Carwash!
Since it was a cool 100°, so far today, I decided it would be a great time to wash +marit runyon's very dirty Mustang GT. Especially since she was off in our Dakota for a couple of hours.
With the garage cooler running it was a nippy 88° in the garage, so that helped. I must say my Mustang got pretty toasty sitting out in the sun while I did this!

Power Pole Change Out
I had to move my Dakota over to the side of the drive because Media Com (the local cable company that I don't even use) parked their truck on the other side of my truck, without asking, I might add, and took off, leaving it there. That was right where SRP, (Our local power company, which I do use) needed to park their truck to finish swapping out the power poles. The new pole is hooked up across the street at the right of the shot.
SRP came to the door and asked if I would mind moving my truck since they needed to get closer and couldn't find the cable guys to get them to move theirs. The cable guys aren't any too bright!

Oops, there goes my camera!
What can happen photographing lightning with a long exposure when the wind suddenly picks up and blows over your camera & tripod.
Got nasty dusty too, but fortunately the camera made a soft landing in the sand and all is well, except for a dusty camera!

Replacing Power Poles
After last week's storms took down numerous trees and power poles, disrupting power for hundreds in the valley, SRP (Salt river Project), the local power company, seems to have decided to replace many of the older power poles with newer and what appear to be thicker ones.
I guess they're hoping to head off a potential problem. Wonder how these new poles will do in a microburst?

Seeing this far too often with Windows 10 Pro
I did an install of Windows 10 Home on my old Sony Vaio pc and it's running quite well. I installed the Windows 10 Pro on both +marit runyon's pc and this, my main pc. It seems to run great on hers, but is giving me fits on the main pc, which is 2-3 times more powerful than the others in the house.
I upgraded the video driver and all the rest are up to date as far as I can tell, but after a few hours I get this nice blue screen (reminds me of XP's "Blue Screen of Death")
Seems like even though it says it's collecting info, it's not doing anything with it to solve the problem. I'm starting to think my Windows 7 wasn't all that bad after all. It never dumped on me like this!

Bulova Accutron Spaceview Circa 1969
Weeklyphotoproject2015-Technology
First introduced in 1960. The first fully electronic timepiece using no conventional balance wheel, but instead the oscillation of a small tuning fork with fine coils wrapped around it. This oscillated at 360mhz dividing each second into 360 parts, giving the timepiece an unheard of accuracy of +or- 1 minute per month. The second hand movement is smooth and it hums rather than ticks. It was accurate enough that Bulova didn't incorporate a set stem at the 3 o'clock position on the watch, but instead used a lift tab on the back.
The first of these had a conventional face and the "Spaceview" was just intended for jewelry store displays, but were so requested by customers that Bulova was forced to offer the Spaceview to their customers.

Bulova manufactured over 4 million tuning fork Accutrons in various forms from 1960 through 1977, including a model they titled Astronaut which was on many of the early manned space flights. In the moon flights all instrument panel clocks and time-keeping mechanisms in the spacecraft on those missions were Bulova Accutrons with tuning fork movements. Bulova made over 4 million tuning fork Accutrons
The timepiece featured in the photo is still running great and I'm wearing it as I type this!

Love These Calls!
I just received a call from 1-(219) 555-0110 which my caller ID showed as Indiana. It should have said India as the guy who identified himself as "Tech Support" had a major Indian or Pakistani accent.
He told me their systems showed I had a major virus and he could correct it. I needed to go to my computer, which I did and push a few buttons which I did. He kept asking me if this or that was coming up when I pushed those buttons and I said it wasn't.
Finally I asked him "Will this work on this Linux operating system?" He paused and said I need to transfer you to that group and hung up! lol

Coyote Breakfast
I heard yesterday that someone one my block had their small dog killed by coyotes
This is in my front yard in January 2011 with coyotes dining on a rabbit they caught. The whining in the video is my dog, Yoda, wanting to get out at them.
Since there were 3 coyotes (one just off camera) and Yoda weighs in at 30lbs. while the average coyote weighs around 40lbs. I didn't think that would have been such a good idea!

Ready For The Storm
Years ago, 1985 to be exact, I captured a lightning storm over Phoenix on film. I was lucky and only shot about 8-10 frames to get the shot, but wanted to try it again with my newly acquired Nikon F-5.
Since film isn't particularly cheap to either buy or process, I wasn't wanting to blow through a couple of rolls to get the shot. I decided to use a lightning trigger, but as you can see by the picture on the left, the F-5 has a really strange 9 pin connector for remotes and such. I finally found one, ordered it, tested it and it works, so now I'm just waiting on the lightning!

1st Lightning Shot
This was the first lightning shot I ever took, back about 1985. Yes that would be on film, not digital. My, then teenage son +Mike Runyon Jr had asked me how hard it would be to photograph lightning and I told him probably not hard, just put the camera on a tripod and do a long exposure.
A day or so later he came in and said "Dad there's a storm over Phoenix! Can we go photograph it?"  I grabbed my camera, cable release and tripod and off we went. I had to use the "bulb" setting on the camera since it didn't have very long exposure settings. This was the best of the 8-10 shots that night. At the time I hadn't seen the couple sitting on the bench in the foreground, but the long exposure brought them out.

That's such A Long Way Down!
Trying to get this little guy to hop off my finger to the ground after +marit runyon  captured him in our kitchen. I figured he'd be safer back in the great outdoors than if the dogs happened to see him in the house!
He was pretty content on my hand and stubborn about being turned out into the wild again.
