Lotus Carroll1,778,587This is the Event for our October Self Portrait Challenge: Your Greatest Fear. Lotus Carroll1,778,587This is the Event for our September 2013 Self Portrait Challenge: A Great Cell Phone Photo. What Does A Racist Look Like?

Maybe my appearance makes people take assumptions? Maybe I fall into a stereotype?

Conversation yesterday while sat in my car:

Hey mate love your car.

Cheers

Do it yourself?

No mate just the interior at the moment.

Nice, bet your made up with the vote, we have to stick together now.

What are you talking about?

Brexit, us British have to stick together now and get this country back.

Back from who?

The immigrants.

Ah I see, well there is a problem with that.

Why?

My forefathers are immigrants, my first name is Michael and taken from my mothers Irish blood, my middle is Frederick from my grandfathers Germanic blood and my last being Shaw from my families Scottish blood. Going back further I have links to the Middle East, and... more »

Sometimes We Get Lucky.

One of the things I have learnt with wildlife photography is it takes as much luck as it does skill. Animals do not understand the need to pose for the camera, they have their own environment and their own way of doing things and they really don't care if you want to take their image or not.

Take this peregrine falcon, it was simply a case of taking images as it sat and watched what was going on, eventually it held a pose that I liked and it was a case of hitting the shutter button. More luck than skill.

Shaped By The Wind.

The tree must bend with the wind, if not its bow will break and it will die. It becomes over time shaped by the wind.

You my friend are not a tree, you are not rooted to the ground. Should the wind try to shape you to something you wish not to be, move.

We are all playing this game called life, we are all eventually going to lose the game, how you play the game though is down to you.

Peace out <3

The Night Shift.

The hours working on nights are too long to be away from the comfort of your bed and home. The weary journey home is emphasised by the need to keep your eyes open and the copious intakes of more and more oxygen to keep your mind awake.

Soon to my bed I'll go, your good morning is my goodnight.

The Yearning.

Its that time of year when we hit the equinox, summer becomes autumn. Its a strange time for me as I love the summer, light days, warm weather and wearing T shirts. I do though look forward to autumn for the creative side of life, sunrises become later in the day, the light is more gentle and the hues of red and gold bring the landscapes alive.

its a time of my own personal equinox and my body yearns for the summer but my soul the autumn.

To Watch Over Us.

They see what we do, they see the destruction of their habitat for our own needs. They see the extinction of so many species just to adorn our walls. They see the pollution we pump into the sky, into the rivers so we can have the latest thing.

They see our selfishness, one day we will have to answer for what we do. They might not be around to ask but our children's children just might.

A Study In Gentleness

I always find time to sit and watch the orangutans, for a creature that is very powerful in comparison to a man they are unbelievably gentle. In all the time I have spent with them I don't think I have ever seen an act of aggression from them. Maybe as a species we could be taught so much from this gentle animal.

I Hear You My Friend

You come to visit again
Through calm you bring chaos
Through silence you bring the roar
Menace the skies with promises
Charge the air with fire
Warn all of your approach
With angry murmers upon the wind
The silent calm soon to be broken
Welcome home the storm

Less Is More.

Its a concept I have struggled with for a lot of the time I have been into photography, I still consider myself a very keen amateur so my body of works reflects me more than say that of a client.
In the beginning my work involved cramming as much within the frame as possible, a lot was over-saturated and if I'm honest when I look back on it utter crap.
But its all a learning curve and has been for over ten years now. One thing I have struggled with is minimalism in my work, I see so many people do it and I just couldn't get the hang of it. That was until I started shooting animals. I learnt how negative space can help with the framing of a subject, how off centering the subject forces the eye to look deeper. More so to let the subject stand on its own merit.

Baby Blue Eyes.

Yesterday I went down to see Damian McGillicuddy's new studio in Widnes (its superb by the way, a photographers idea of heaven) and while there we sat and chatted over a coffee putting the worlds to right.

At one point we got onto the subject of street photography. For me I struggle a lot with most street photography as I'm not 100% sure of what it is people are trying portray in their imagery. If it is a general look through a keyhole in time then yes, they achieve that but I don't really get much from it. A woman buying apples from a street market, a conversation over coffee on a pavement cafe is just that. Something I see day in day out and when I see the same scene in a photograph it just does nothing for me.

People will say "but you go out taking street photographs". Yes I do and its something I do a lot, I love people watching and seeing how everyone interacts but for me to then photograph something I have seen then there must be something there that has driven me to do so. In this case I would hope that would drive an audience to look at the finished image.

As photographers we are not just capture images, we are story tellers as well, unless our images are capable of leading an audience on a journey through that story then we simply become tourists taking snapshots.

I was in Liverpool yesterday during the pirate day, I went with the aim of photographing people. Not any people but those that made me look twice. This little girl was with her parents who were dressed up for the occasion. No matter what the spectacle was going on around me I saw her eyes through everything and new I had to photograph her and the whimsical look she had.

This is street photography, regardless of the editing to take out the background to focus on the babies face its still street photography but I just kind of knew people would get lost in those baby blue eyes.___

The Beauty Of Photography

I does not always lie in the finished image but what you see when you take it. Over the years photography has taught me so much, patience has become a virtue, I can stand in one spot waiting for the jaguars to come close, or waiting for the sun to break over the horizon just in that sweet spot. Standing around just considering my relationship with my environment while waiting for the right light.

All these times I get to see things missed by so many others, my mind is open to everything going on around me, I'm taking it all in, not doing anything but getting a deeper understanding for what I see.

Connection, colours, smells, light, shadow, even the littlest of things such as a dandilion seed drifting by on the breeze in front of you, I sit and watch as it twists and turns in the air, as if a well rehearesed choriographed dance is being... more »

I see dew shimmer as mother nature has laid a delicate diamond on each blade of grass just to glitter in the morning light for me.

Thats the beauty of photography to me, by closing one eye to look through a viewfinder its opened the door to my mind and creativity and dare I say, my soul.___

Your Scars Show Your Courage.

Don't hide the scars that life gave you, be like the lion and wear them as a badge of pride. They show you have been willing to fight for something in life.

Not all scars are visible but we allow those to shape us, don't allow them to make you walk with your head bowed don't allow them to steer your direction.

We are who we are, we have been shaped by our past to make the person that stands in front of the mirror today. The tattoos of being are we, don't hide them away, stand tall and roar back at the world, I am me.

Dear G+,
You seriously need to get your act together?

I come here only sporadically now as the place seems to have gotten lost, too many changes and its like trying to navigate a maze.

You converted galleries into collection, the same thing surly, but I cannot find a way of exporting images from galleries into collections apart from re-uploading everything, just not going to do that. Its used to be when I wanted to upload images I simply went into galleries and hey, guess what? There they were, all laid out with the titles I gave them, it was a simple case of opening a gallery and adding an image. Now I cant even find most of them, I go into photographs and I get a rag tag collection of a few, to find them has become the maze I spoke about.

So I just simply upload to the main wall and the image just floats there is no context to anything else around it.

Then... more »

So I just simply upload to the main wall and the image just floats there is no context to anything else around it.

Then there is notifications, I get more spam through my notifications here than on ANY other forum I'm on, its seems you have little, no sorry I'll rephrase that, NO control over it whatsoever. So when I'm trying to look through the genuine notification I'm having to trawl through endless crap, Join Busty Girls, See our latest products? Pardon my French but please can you make them all just fuck off? I now rarely open my notifications here, its too much like hard work and this in turn has made my interaction at a level that is possibly just above 1%.

I have no idea what you are trying to achieve here anymore, is its a social media site, is it a forum to advertise?

Whatever it is its now over-bloated and extremely over complicated, its almost as if you made something, it grew at a rate you never expected, you lost control of it, you threw shit at it trying to control and lost it even more. Then you ran away and left it to its own devices and now you seem to be left with a basterdised version of something you once had.

Its a mess, this is a plea to please sort your shit out. ___

A Moment To Herself!

One of my favourite times at Chester yesterday was with the orangutans. They have bred well with an abundance of young. This though summed up her mood, just wanted sometime alone, the sack eventually being pulled over her head :)

Kingfisher And Bokeh.

Sorry I have not had much chance to respond to a lot of messages etc today, myself and Jude have spent the day at Chester Zoo giving the 5D a proper try out. I have to say I'm very impressed, this body combined with the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 and the 1X4 extender are made for each other.

This was many test shots of a kookaburra and other animals that I just loved. I'm back in work tomorrow but hope to be able to sit and edit more and respond to all your replies etc

So Many Questions, So Few Answers.

I have been in Liverpool today to try out the new camera. I was taking my usual street shots but nothing out of the ordinary, just getting a feel for it.
I then spotted him talking to another gentleman in a suit. I have no idea of the conversation, I just watched his body language. He gripped the bottle in his hands and was constantly twisting the top on and off subconsciously as he spoke. He made little or no eye contact with the person he spoke with. The long dirty fingernails said one thing but his neatly trimmed beard said another. All the time I was fixed upon his eyes, so many times he seemed close to tears, the closer he got the more he twisted the bottle top.
For some reason he was upset but I had no idea as to why, I wanted to ask if he was OK but I didn't want to interrupt the conversation he was having.

So many questions.

What Have I Learnt?

A few years back I decided to set myself a challenge to do something different than landscapes. I thought I could challenge myself and try animal portraits, not your usual pet portraits, that would have been easy but portraits of wild animals.

So I went along to my local zoo in Chester just to see how I would get along. It was then that I realised my love for big cats was greater then even I knew. By taking time to actually look at them, study them rather than standing by their enclosures going "here kitty kitty" as so many of the public do, do you get an insight to who they really are,

One thing was for certain from the outset, they do not pose for the camera and you sure as hell can't cajole them into doing so. You have to work with what you have, a majestic animal that lives by its own rules.

One thing was for certain from the outset, they do not pose for the camera and you sure as hell can't cajole them into doing so. You have to work with what you have, a majestic animal that lives by its own rules.

I found that the two things I needed the most turned out to be the two things I lacked the most, patience and luck. I had to learn patience and by trying to get the right image I did, not only in photography but in life in general. Luck though cannot be a learnt trait, that comes with patience and watching. You get to know the characters of the animals you photograph, you start to understand their traits and behaviour. No amount of "here kitty kitty" at the side of their enclosure is ever going to wake a sleeping big cat. Other cats in their environment will though so watch not only your subject but the others around them and any interaction that may take place.

I learnt that it was not an easy challenge I had set myself but I grew to find it was probably the most fulfilling and exhilarating one I would ever have.

My next goal? To see if I can photograph them in their natural environment, anyone want to buy me a world travel ticket ;)___

Hometown Blues

This is my hometown Widnes, a small industrial town that sits on the banks of the river Mersey. It was built on the chemical industry with the old ICI being the company that fed the town. Much of this industry is gone but some remnants of its past remain.

Most that live here accept it for what it is, a real mix of an urban sprawl, good and bad areas, most though don't look beyond the scars of the past and realise what we have.

There is beauty to be found everywhere, the steam rising from Fiddlers Ferry power station would be considered a blot on the landscape but taken with a long exposure during sunrise it has a whole new perspective.

Tell Me Again?

How you are king of all you see.
How you are top of the food chain?

Stand as naked as he is, stand in his environment, fight with what you have with you just as he does. Tell me then who is king of all he sees, tell me then who is top of the food chain?

We forget that as we sit in our ivory towers there are much more powerful creatures that share this planet. It was by a twist of fate and nothing more that allowed our evolution to develop as it did. If not for that it could have been a whole different story.

Maybe the time has come to remind ourselves of this, maybe we all need to face a lion as it stalks us to understand our place in this world. Then and only then maybe we shall learn to respect the earth all all that lives upon it.

Another camera for sale.

It's the LUMIX DMC-GX8 coupled with the Lecia DG Summilux 15mm f1.7 ASPH lens.

Cost new in excess of £1200 in the UK. This has been out of the box, used once and put back in the box. It has the 4K resolution (that in itself is stunning)

It's a small enough camera that can easily be carried around but as its the mirrorless system I struggle to get on with it.

£750 ONO.

PM if interested.

My way adrift around my world and in my heavens.
I see no more the life I have or wish for.
Only the dust that rises upon the wind of my sorrow.
Stay steady they say, stand true when all around you are drowned in lies and deceit.
But heavy my heart, heavy my soul, heavy my mind and body.
No longer willing nor able to carry this weight.

They promised a land upon generations to grow.
They promised a utopia, a Shangri-La for dreams to soar.

I Have The Pink Tutu!!!!

If you want to see me race in it then we need to get just over another £900 raised for the wonderful Rainbow House and all the beautiful children they help. Up to date with all the help from you beautiful people we have raised just under £1100 😊

One being Millie, daughter of a friend of mine called Phil Proudfoot who has been helped so much by this organisation it's become a lifeline to her and her family.

Me looking a bit silly running in a pink tutu is nothing compared to the struggles of family's like this who love their children so much.

Please click the link and read Millie's story and if you can please donate. The reaction from you all has been stunning up to now but we need to try and get as much money for the Rainbow House as we can.

Huge thank you from me.

Good morning.

I would like to introduce you to the beautiful Millie, she is the daughter of a good friend Phil Proudfoot. As you can see she has a smile that lights up the world.

I'm asking you and the power of social media to help myself and Phil make that smile even brighter. Millie depends on a lot of help from a lot of people, one organisation is called The Rainbow House that are simply wonderful. They are holding a charity event on the 23rd of April called The Rainbow Ramble. It's a run or walk (or in my case a crawl) over 5, 11 or 18 miles. Although I hate running I figure it's nothing really when it comes to seeing Millie's and all the other children's smiles that Rainbow House help.

So I'm letting you all decide what distance I should run, if we raise £500+ I'll run the five miles, £1100+ I'll run the 11 miles and £1800+ I'llru... more »

If you can donate then please click the link below 😊

I know and understand that not everyone can donate but if you can then even a small amount is a huge help. Also social media can be a wonderful place, you can put a picture up of a cute kitten and watch it go viral. I would love the image of beautiful Millie to go just as viral, after all who could resist such a smile 😊. So please share this far and wide and let's see social media at its best, let's get this wonderful organisation as much help as it deserves.

Thank you,
Mike 😊❤️

Deafening cacophony of silence echoes
Fills the void to excess
Breaking moments of nothingness
I watch and weep tears of fruitily

Gemini moon wanders overhead
Gentle glide across skies of moths
Screaming whisper for only my ear
Bright darkness reflects mine eye

The dark side to hide in comfort
The dark side to cradle

Chatter to the stars
In voice of trembling fear
A mothers tongue
Never translated to understand

Man I once was

Aged through war and destruction
Killed damned soul of irredeemable cancer

When rotation turns the night shadow round
Do you find comfort
In what is unseen

Is relief within this damned night
Cast shadows across the mind
Your sister bright
She burns the hearts sorrow deep

She visits me through silver burnished
Revealing the cracks upon my conception
And fear that lies ashen
Debris remain to be picked

And so time never lasting
Forever to be my burden
Gemini moon is passing
Until night sleeps again

Whispers of madness still echo
In silence deafening mourns
Escape within the sanctity
Of my inward foetus caress

Gemini moon I loathe the bright
I fear the night
Insanity of mine own making
Destruction at my own hand

Mankind am I
Pitiless I will be
Gone to become
Forgotten to be remembered

Insomnia will be my curse___

Sometimes We Get Lucky.

One of the things I have learnt with wildlife photography is it takes as much luck as it does skill. Animals do not understand the need to pose for the camera, they have their own environment and their own way of doing things and they really don't care if you want to take their image or not.

Take this peregrine falcon, it was simply a case of taking images as it sat and watched what was going on, eventually it held a pose that I liked and it was a case of hitting the shutter button. More luck than skill.

Moments Of Clarity

Where do you get yours?
That moment when everything comes into focus, everything suddenly has a purpose, a reason. Sometimes its when you least expect it, others when you do. Such as that one moment the sun breeches the clouds and hits a standing stone on Castlerig Stone Circle. I wonder over the many centuries how many others have stood and witnessed the same, felt the same?

The Promises Of Life.

The sun will rise, the sun will set, the rains will fall, the droughts will come, the people will be born, the people will die, the mountains will stand fast, the rivers will flow, the air will be warm and fade to cold.

Life goes on, this is the only promises it can make, don't spend time staring at the ugly, it will make for an ugly mind, spend time staring at the beautiful for that is what we are capable of. This planet earth might be one of a kind within a billion other universes, we may well be alone but she gives you more than she will ever ask for.

What You Think You Know!

The internet is far removed from reality, the cyber world is just that, another world. It's a place you are able to shape and form an alternative of yourself. You show who you want to be rather than who you really are. We all weave a web to cocoon ourselves from a reality and portray what we think we feel others should know.

We all do it, it's a self preservation system we have built in, more utilise this self preservation than others. It's to protect our private inner sanctity so we surround ourselves with half truths as a shield.

So we think we know, we believe we know who is there on the other side of the keyboard based on what they let us know about them. It's only by taking down the shields of half truths do we liberate ourselves form the constraints we place on ourselves.

I know people's thoughts about me, I know... more »

I know people's thoughts about me, I know I hear things such as "compassionate" "caring" but I show you that side. The other side you do not see, only those close to me know me for real, my wife Jude knows what it is like to live with a man with mental health issues, how bipolar controls my moods and has to be counter-controlled by medication. Without it I am talked down of bridges or out of a siege. I'm not easy to live with, I know that and it takes a special someone to handle me. I know that but you don't because I have only one real layer I show you. The deeper hidden layers I don't portray here, the dark days where the black dog hunts me down and I turn back on it snarling back, when anger reaches a crisis point during a manic stage. Those you don't see, I chose not to show you, afraid they are shown as a sign of weakness, I'm mentally unstable but I'm not the only one. One in four people suffer, one in four families suffer along with them. So many hide in the shadows too afraid to come out, too afraid to be stigmatised.

Walk out from the shadows and liberate yourself. Take the help that is there, reclaim your life from the black dog and find comfort in those that love you and willing to help.___
