Got hacked last night. All my files are being held ransom and have been overwritten and encrypted. Including a depressingly large number amount of photos - as my back up drive was connected when it occurred. For sure at least six months of photos and lot more on my computer. Might have been a zero day exploit of flash players that was announced this week. I didn't sleep much last night. I am reasonably sure I have to resign myself to this not being something I can recover from. I won't be posting till this is sorted out.

TL:DR rant about developing film.

So here is how it works for getting film developed these days. Drop off film. Pay between 15-20 bucks to get it developed and put on a CD. It then, in this case, it goes to +Henry's Camera  HQ in Toronto and then to Fuji Canada   as Henrys doesn't develop film at all any more. Two plus weeks later you can pick it up. The CD only has low res Jpeg scans of 3-4MB each. So essentially nothing can be done with the file except print a 4x6 if the low res scan noise isn't terrible. (look at the jet black arrows on the sign for noise).

The Henrys manager indicated that wanting files you can actually do something with is not the norm and most people will then come back and get a high res scan of a frame or two done. If you want that done, it is outsourced to another company called Elevator, and they charge $75.00 and up per frame - all for changings... more »

If you want that done, it is outsourced to another company called Elevator, and they charge $75.00 and up per frame - all for changing settings to a higher resolution on the scanner... Another two weeks goes by and you get your file on CD. People. actually. pay. for. this.

When I emailed the manager and later talked to her in the store, she didn't seem phased at the absurdity of paying $1800 to get 24 high res scans done. I told them a consumer could buy 4-5 film scanners for that price and that they should have one in store to offer the service. She said she would suggest that to head office.

People these days who develop film are not getting snaps done at a one hour photo. They are likely people wanting to work them in post and maybe make good sized print enlargements.
Total utter BS.

At the very least I could get film developed at Henrys - which is the cheapest to do it so far at about $7-8 dollars if I just want the negs developed and no prints or CD,, and then get a high res scan done by someone else who can do it economically but it would still cost likely $30-40 a roll of 24 when all is said and done. Which is nuts. I had intended on doing a film related project this year, but that isn't economically feasible now.

Detail of the Astronaut memorial plaque at KSC in Florida with the Challenger and Columbia crews in the centre. Shot in April 2004 - a year after Columbia.

I was in Mr Wardle's history class in my last year of high school and they brought in the AV cart to watch the Challenger launch live. A teacher going into space was, and still is, a big deal. I remember stunned silence and crying and confusion. Not much else after that. I imagine today there would be grief counselors available for students.

From the next launch on, right through to the last flight of a shuttle with Atlantis on STS-135 in July 2011, I held my breath waiting for the ominous 'go for throttle up' moment to pass. The moment when it all went pear shaped for Challenger STS-51-L. 30 years seems like yesterday.

Analog film shooter question:
Got test roll back from being developed at +Henry's Camera  (a large reputable photography store here in Canada) and it is noise city. Canon AE-1, film was ISO400, not expired Kodak Gold. Not over or under exposed. The noise is terrible. If I made prints they would be unusable even as 4x6s - have not printed one yet. I know something is wrong here. Has anyone had film put on CD from Henry's and encountered this issue? They output 300dpi jpegs to CD (not offered diff dpi or Tiffs as options). Example of a right from CD full res Jpeg here if someone wanted to download and pixel peep. Thoughts anyone?

A really nice tribute to Alan Rickman who just passed away. #RIPAlanRickman

Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with. He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I've ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I'm pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn't have to do that. I know other people who've been friends with him for much much longer than I have and they all say "if you call Alan, it doesn't matter where in the world he is or how busy he is with what he's doing, he'll get back to you within a day".

People create perceptions of actors based on the parts they played so it might surprise some people to learn that contrary to some of the sterner(or downright scary) characters he played, Alan was extremely kind, generous, self-deprecating and funny. And certain things obviously became even funnier when delivered in his unmistakable double-bass.

As an actor he was one of the first of the adults on Potter to treat me like a peer rather than a child. Working with him at such a formative age was incredibly important and I will carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life and career. Film sets and theatre stages are all far poorer for the loss of this great actor and man.___A really nice tribute to Alan Rickman who just passed away. #RIPAlanRickman

Looking forward to seeing what this is about.

Dive into the new Google+

As +Eddie Kessler shared this afternoon, we’ve spent lots of time talking to people who are passionate about Google+. We visited them in their homes, we invited them into early testing communities and we learned more about how and why they use Google+. The predominant answer? Having a great place to keep up with and talk about their interests. From Astrophotography (goo.gl/HRQmIh) to Wild Hummingbirds (https://goo.gl/6FscI6), people are not only discovering amazing things, but meeting others who share their passions as well.

Today we’re taking a big step toward making Google+ an even better place for your interests. To do so, we’ve drastically simplified nearly every aspect of the product. You’ll see this clearly in our new navigation centered around Collections and Communities. Collections let you immerse yourself in content about topics like surfing (https://goo.gl/vvv5QD) or tiny tilt-shift photography scenes (goo.gl/nWyicL) . Communities enable groups of people with the same interets to join up and geek out on anything from Game of Thrones (goo.gl/aaqtgq) to Painting (goo.gl/kmlM7m). With Collections and Communities, discovering amazing things is simple: just follow or join whatever happens to pique your interests.

But we didn’t stop with Collections and Communities; the new Google+ also makes it easier to post, search, connect, and keep up with great content in a fully redesigned home stream. And we’ve worked hard to make our new web experience load fast and work beautifully on devices of all sizes.

You can preview the new Google+ on the web today by signing in and clicking “Let’s go” when you see the prompt. (And since not every feature of Google+ has made its way into this new design, for now, you can toggle back to the classic Google+ with one click in the bottom left-hand corner.) In the coming days, we’ll roll out updated apps for Android and iOS.

While this is an exciting new beginning for us, we’re definitely not done yet. We got here by listening and learning, and will continue doing so. Please visit our Help Center (https://goo.gl/gWsFeh) or drop us a line in our support community (https://goo.gl/eMFVj) to share your thoughts, questions, and more. ___Looking forward to seeing what this is about.

Apparently known as the boat building. Viewed from above it does have a strong resemblance. Built 1979.

Tons of interesting info. I like how this was edited too. From 1st gear bag containing a gas mask, Kevlar & Kwikclot, to last bag with just one camera.

I haven't posted on here in a while (sorry!) but  as a Canadian, I am disgusted the Peeple app and the company founder Julia Cordray comes from here.

The Peeple app is designed to allow users to rate anyone and for those ratings to be permanent. People being rated have no control over whether they are added to the app's database or not.  I strongly suspect Peeple never considered what sort of liability they are opening themselves up to when trolls actually use Peeple.  They see only positive things for when this app is used. But what if someone, say a teen who is already emotionally vulnerable, receives negative reviews from bullies using the Peeple app, and they can do nothing to correct, refute, or remove it, and the bullying  pushes him or her over the edge and they commit suicide? Do you think Peeple will be liable then? There are some pretty unpleasant places in the world thatthe... more »

Do you think Peeple will be liable then? There are some pretty unpleasant places in the world that the founder (pictured below) might not want to be extradited to if they have to face possible criminal charges. I think that their being prepared to face possible wrongful defamation of character lawsuits will be the least of their worries at that point. I wonder if Julia Cordray or her coders will be comfortable with someone's death on their collective conscience - all for the sake of making a couple of bucks?

I hope that the +Google Play  and Apple App Store decide to not allow it to be made available.  Oh and Peeple is on here and Youtube too, but I couldn't direct link them in the body of the post.

(made this post originally as a comment elsewhere and modified it from that comment).

I will, one day, again make the pretty things.
I will just need some patience, time, and better computer security to stop yesterday's brutal and demoralizing ransomware attack happening again.

Photo is Leia D.  A staged wedding dress shoot, 2007.

1/52 'Peeps'.
I decided to do a proper 52 week challenge. I already do an unofficial 365 challenge as I post photos nearly every day - and have for more than a decade, but starting today, I will post a themed photo each Sunday for 52 weeks in a row. My rules are that these will be objects and things, and not places or beings. All the photos will be shot with a 50mm f1.8 and with a very shallow depths of field. I call this my Nifty Fifty Fifty Two.

I got to use a Joby Gorilla Pod for the first time today. Wrapped it around an adjacent tree to get this image. My only question is, what the heck is this Jacks like plant thing? A google search made me think that it might be White Baneberry (Actaea pachypoda) but they usually have red stalks and more of them in one spot . Maybe a variation there of?

Sutherland Press building
May 2015
It's my understanding that this building was slated to be turned into loft condos or apartments but things fell through and it just stalled part way through the renovations. There are very few loft style buildings in SW Ontario, so if it ever did get off the ground it would be pretty unique.
