What are the different kinds of USB C-to-C cables?

Now that everyone has more and more #USB #TypeC phones, tablets, and laptops and we’re getting more and more USB Type-C hubs and chargers, let’s talk a little bit about C-to-C cables. Not Legacy. :)

The USB Type-C Specification (available here : http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/usb_31_032516.zip) defines 2 different kinds of C-to-C cables. I've listed the parts of the spec for convenience in reading.

What are the major differences between these two kinds of cables?

Section 3.4.1 : USB Full-Featured Type-C Cable Assembly -
This type supports USB 3.1 functionality up to 10gbps. This kind of cable requires between 15 and 18 wires in total.

Section 3.4.1 : USB Full-Featured Type-C Cable Assembly -
This type supports USB 3.1 functionality up to 10gbps. This kind of cable requires between 15 and 18 wires in total.
As an additional requirement, these cables are now required in the Type-C spec to have e-marker identifier chips, increasing the complexity and cost of this kind of cable.

Section 3.4.2 : USB 2.0 Type-C Cable Assembly -
This type of cable only supports USB 2.0 High Speed operation.
It has a total of 5 or 6 wires. Most typical is 5 wires, Gnd, Vbus, CC, and Dp, Dn.
This kind of cable's e-marker is optional.

The USB 3.1 Full Featured cables have 10 more wires than the USB 2.0 variant. With those extra wires, the cable is capable of faster USB 3.1 data rates with supported hosts and clients, meaning support for SuperSpeed 5gbps and SuperSpeed+ 10gbps. See the pictures I’ve attached below of two tables from the Type-C spec that illustrate this stark difference in the number of wires.

In addition, these extra wires make Alternate Modes such as VESA DisplayPort possible. Type-C alternate modes allow for some or all of the SuperSpeed data wires and other wires in the full-featured cable to be switched over to a different purpose other than USB data. In the case of VESA DP alternate mode, these are switched over to allow DisplayPort video traffic. This means that the Full-Featured Type-C cable above isn’t just a replacement for your USB 3.1 A-to-B cable, but it also represents a complete replacement of DisplayPort cables or HDMI cables as well!

USB 2.0 cables cannot support this functionality, but they are simpler and far cheaper for the manufacturer. They also have several very important advantage over Full Featured cables : 1) It’s WAY easier to get much longer cables when they are USB 2.0. The 8 superspeed wires must meet USB 3.1 signal integrity requirements, which get harder as the cable length grows. USB 2.0 cables don’t have that problem and easily get to 2M or 3M.
2) Since there are fewer wires, USB 2.0 cables will be thinner and more flexible than their USB 3.1 Full-Featured cable variants.

Differentiation
How are we as consumers going to tell these two kinds of cables apart? Unlike in previous generations of USB connectors, where the connectors are all different based on the capabilities of the cable, both of these types of cables may look identical based on the plugs on each end. The USB-IF’s solution to the possible confusion to these different cables is careful labeling with new logos. If a C-to-C cable is labeled clearly with the SuperSpeed USB trident logo (with a “SS”), then that cable should be guaranteed to be a Full-Featured cable. Otherwise, expect the cable to be USB 2.0 only.

I’ve posted pictures of two different USB Type-C cables from each class of cable above. The first is Google’s 1.8M USB 2.0 C-to-C cable. The second is Black Squid’s Full-Featured USB 3.1 C-to-C cable.

I have wrote more about the movie (spoiler free) over at IMDB if you wanted to know my thoughts on it :)

The last 2 months at work, I am working on this new web project, and I decided to use +AngularJS with TypeScript. It is a pretty great combo for whoever is starting a new project. I have a team of five and TypeScript makes it so organized. EcmaScript 6 is great!

I am really considering to use ReactJS because I want to learn the differences. I want to wrap my mind around new Shadow DOM style.

What are your thoughts about this?

Brilliant for those who have kids!

Introducing HomeTube, a child-friendly launcher that allows kids to easily and safely watch YouTube content.

I was motivated to write HomeTube after I found myself increasingly frustrated observing my children attempt to interact with and navigate the YouTube mobile apps. I couldn't shake the feeling there was an opportunity for an interface that was both vastly simpler and allowed me more control over what was being viewed.

I had also recently read a terrific article[1] which I felt illustrated a gut thought I'd long had quite exceptionally: that taking options, complexity and features away can be a positive feature in itself. I didn't want my kids expanding the notification shade and accidentally loading the Play Store app. I didn't want my kids opening system settings or even having access to the multitasking button. I wanted an interface where my kids could easily watch the YouTube videos they wanted to watch on a whim, and nothing else.

Thus HomeTube was born. The interface couldn't be simpler. HomeTube is configured with child-friendly content[2] which displays in a grid. From there, a child selects the content they want to watch and the top ~20 search results for that category are displayed. One more click and they're watching a video. And that's it.

If you're running Android 4.4, immersive mode kicks in so the system status and navigation bars are hidden. And because HomeTube can be set as a default launcher (you are of course free to use it as a normal app if you chose), I can create user profiles for my children on my Android tablet, and all they ever see is HomeTube.

If you're reading this, HomeTube is almost certainly a terrible way for you to consume YouTube content. But if you have a child who likes to watch the same YouTube content over and over again instantly, HomeTube is a terrific interface for your child to consume YouTube content. And as a parent, HomeTube means I can finish washing the dishes without having to change the current video being played 5 times, so that's particularly nice.

HomeTube is free to use with its defaults, and there's a single 99 cent in-app purchase if you want to customize the content that displays. Enjoy :)

Download HomeTube from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.hometube.playstore

[1] http://stratechery.com/2014/chromebooks-cost-complexity/
[2] Obviously I can't guarantee that you and I agree 100% on what is child-friendly content, but sound out in the comments if you feel a default is particularly misguided.___Brilliant for those who have kids!

The new CEO at Microsoft is changing our internal culture rapidly :)

For example, last month we launched //oneweek, it was a way for us to spend time with our hackathon teams and see our products in action at the product fair. There were over 10000 hackers participating! Some of projects can qualify to the Bingcubator round where they will spend three months bringing their idea to production (I am participating in Bingcubator in my second term now).

For example, do you remember Steve Gleason?. The hackathon team built an incredible demo using eye gaze technology to control a wheelchair.

Exciting times at Microsoft. I never would have imagined our culture changed this much that quickly. All barriers are getting unlocked. More innovation is being discovered.

Writing papers with LaTeX has become easier!
ShareLaTeX updated with a new face lift!

When I was writing papers in University, everyone used LaTeX, I don't know if they still use them today, but it was the thing ... They just released a nice new UI (it looks Googley too). I just use Office Word now, and Markdown, but it is nice this has an easy to use visual editor for LaTeX

"In order for side projects to truly succeed, they have to be stupid"

This is what Spotify's design lead said in this great article.
1) Let yourself be stupid
2) Take it one step at a time
3) Ditch your obsession with growth
4) Trust yourself more

And it ended well "I didn't build it because it stopped being fun. It stopped being stupid"

Google I/O 2014 has ended!

It was a great two days of learning and fun! Met nice people +Melissa Daniels +Ade Oshineye +Michael Mahemoff +François Beaufort +Josh Armour +Derek Ross and many more!

- Chromebook is finally getting useful, Android apps finally integrated.
- New Android NDK tools from partners, loving the NVIDIA GPU debugging toolset!
- Android Material flat design is beautiful
- Android Wear, Auto, TV and Xbox Controller look like a nice family of products under one operating system. Great for developers.
- Oculus Rift cloned for under a dollar :-) - Lots of company swag, you can never run out of shirts (need more drawers) The best one this year was duolingo stuffed animal :)

Google should really not allow Runtastic to do that squatting competition, that area was full of sweat (people were dripping sweat)! People were squatting for like 10+ hours ... Just to win a Google Glass :) Would you do it :p

Unfortunately, there was no Google+ at this years Google I/O :(___

How to communicate between Sandboxes in JavaScript Extensions
#javascript   #extensions   #ios8   #wwdc14

A month before WWDC, I was invited by Apple (representing Microsoft)  to help them create a Bing Translate extension on iOS 8 Action Extensions. I just published an article that explains a technique I used to communicate between different JavaScript sandboxes when dealing with Extensions in iOS 8. The same thing applies in Chrome Extensions

I have used this technique it for many of my hacks when developing Chrome Extensions, and I used it again to develop the iOS 8 Action Extension. I hope this may be of any good use for any other developer if you require to communicate back and fourth with the JavaScript on the Browser Context side.

Let me know what you think :) As usual, the code is open sourced on GitHubhttps:/... more »

If you look deep in the code I used one of my earlier hack techniques to remove my companies branding using mutations :)___

If anyone is looking for an Off The Record Messaging Cryptography Protocol (OTR) for Windows 8 Runtime, we updated this library during the Facebook Hackathon this weekend for a Secure Chat app we created on that platform.

OTR with your messaging workflow will ensure:

- Confidentiality, so that the messages are encrypted.
- Authentication that verifies who the initiator and receiver are.
- Perfect Forward Secrecy so that each instant message sent is encrypted using a different encryption key.
- Deniability, so that the MAC keys that already have been used will not be used again.
