"Dawn King"
African Lion
Etosha National Park, Namibia

This is one of 7 photos of mine that were highly commended at the BioPhoto Contest held in Budoia, Italy, over the weekend. I photographed this lion at dawn from a remote research hide in Etosha, at a focal length of just 200mm.

"A narrow view..."

Unfortunately the money lobby of big hunting in the European Union and the USA has helped prevent giving higher protection for elephants at the CITES convention yesterday!

1. How can you isolate the elephant populations in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia from the population in the greater Africa where a decline of 30% over 7 years is prevalent? Elephants don't have passports and don't respect borders!
2. How can countries who DON'T have elephants and have a dismal record of preserving their own wildlife (bison, european wolves anyone?) have ANY say in how to protect Africa's natural heritage?

We think we've come a long way as a global community, when in fact we're still stuck in the 1800s mentally in so many respects.

Rant over.

I will just try and see as many of them as I... more »

Far from Home

+Jasbir S. Randhawa put the call out today for birds photographed farthest from home for #NewBirdPoker (I'm assuming my home, not the bird's home :-) ), and I think this guy fills the bill! This is the Subdesert Mesite (Monias benschi), who lives only in a patch of spiny desert near Ifaty, Madagascar. Getting a photo involved plenty of patience and crawling through thorns... The IUCN considers the species vulnerable due to its extremely limited habitat, where it faces a range of threats.

My whole Madagascar album is at https://plus.google.com/photos/+AlexLapidus/albums/5933913563025170673 ; prints and other photo products available at http://www.alexlapidus.com .

I captured this moment late one afternoon in the Mara Triangle in Kenya. Lion cubs always provide interesting moments, whereas the adults are often lazing around and resting.

Rant over.

I will just try and see as many of them as I can while they still roam the wild, and introduce my kids to the wonder of elephants so they can at least tell their own children about it when these creatures are all dead...

"Killer in the Making"

A young Spotted Hyaena in the Kruger National Park.
Many people believe them to be full-time scavengers when they are very efficient pack hunters in their own right and can dominate the ecosystem in areas where lion presence is thin.

This one is still in the "cute" stage, though...

"Giraffe Breakfast"
This is one of several of my photos screened at the BioPhoto festival in Budoia, Italy, this past weekend. The theme for this year's contest was "Deserts" and 7 of my images were awarded with commendations.

I am always on the lookout for an opportunity to whip out the wide angle lens with wildlife, to add context to the photos I am taking and where they are taken. This one was taken in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Kalahari desert, South Africa.

New biological and taxonomical information about giraffes actually has biologists wanting to place them in 4 separate species, enhancing their conservation focus. At least two of the proposed new species would fall into the "threatened" category of the IUCN Red List, whereas giraffes as a main genus now lists as "least concern". The current designation does not offer them the conservation effort that is needed, as their numbers are falling rapidly.

One of my best leopard sightings in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. This leopard had to quickly make its way up a tree to keep its kill away from the Spotted Hyena below.
