We'll finally get a chance to do more photowalks! ;) And with a holiday coming, we'll take the opportunity to make it an evening event, between the Mouzaïa neighbourhood (countryside in Paris) and La Villette (quite a bit more modern!). We'll meet outside exit #1 of Jourdain station at 7:30pm, on Wednesday 28 May. We'll probably stop for dinner on the way, as I expect you'll be very hungry.Sortie photo / Photowalk - Mouzaïa / La Villette2014-05-28 19:30:009G+

Mykal Hall374,059+Jay Patel and +Varina Patel are here in Australia for a workshop in Port Stephens hosted by +Brent Mail on the 3-5 Jan 2014. I have twisted their arms to do a photowalk here in +Sydney on the 11 January 2014.  So lets show our guest the welcome the Sydney Photo Community has to offer. We will meet on the steps in front of the Sydney Opera House at 6.30pm and slowly make our way to Hickson Rd Reserve for sunset and then to the end point at Observatory Hill by 9pm. I have plotted a few photo opportunity locations along the route as well as public toilets that I know of.https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zw_eAURDDMag.kLJfMBZmQ50o There are plenty of food outlets to grab a quick bite to eat at Circular Quay for the journey. I have walked the route in 1hr 40mins at a leisurely pace but you may want to stay at one location longer if you desire. That will be fine as long as we all get together at the start to greet Jay and Varina and then at the end point to say our goodbyes. Then afterwards if you still feel in the mood to chat over a drink we will be heading to The Hero of Waterloo (if there is only a small group) or the Harbour View Hotel (if there are more than the Hero can fit).I recommend catching public transport to Circular Quay or Town Hall but if you drive in there are a few parking stations within a short walk to the Opera House. I suggest downloading the "Cheap Parking App" from the Google playstore or iTunes. This will give you pricing options from closest or cheapest and links to get to them.I hope everyone has a great time during the walk socialising and remember you can approach Jay, Varina and myself at anytime to ask any questions. Please share this with anyone you may know who would want to join us. :))) Looking forward to see you all and don't forget the hash tag #PatelSydneyPhotowalk+Jay and Varina Patel Sydney Photowalk2014-01-11 18:30:00142G+

paradigmblue8,018Welcome to #ParadigmShift #6For #ParadigmShift #6 I'm sharing with you guys another one of my favourite images.  Back in early June, I was fortunate enough to be in Sydney on a week long work conference.  This just happened to tie in with the Vivid Sydney 2013 Festival.  For two weeks, the world renown Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge were lit up with all kinds of lights - it was a spectacular sight and event to attend.  I was really happy that I was able to escape at night on a few occasions after work and capture this event.  For my pics, visit my website here: http://www.paradigmblue.org/website/portfolio/vivid-sydney/After doing this for awhile, I decided to cross over the Harbour and venture out to the less crowded side at Milsons Point in North Sydney and look back towards the city.  It was so nice and peaceful on this side and the view was spectacular.  So I wanted to capture this feeling by taking an image directly under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and capture some of the skyline.  And it's this image that will feature in #ParadigmShift #6This #ParadigmShift will be different from others as it's a long exposure night shot - light is a scarce commodity with his image and it's what you'll do with it that'll make it pop!  I'll post the before and after shot below and you'll see that I opted for a crop guided by the rule of thirds.  As for you, do whatever floats your boat!Other details are:Filter: ND4Shutter: 151 secsISO: 100F /13Shot on a Canon 6D (24-105mm) - focal length @ 28mmSo there is plenty to pull out of the RAW file (linked below).  As always, I look forward to your edits.  Please play by the rules :)The RulesStep 1Share this event to your public stream.  Failure to do so will result in your image being removed.Step 2If I'm not in your circles, add me - +paradigmblue Step 3Sign into #ParadigmShift #6 with a short comment Step 4Download the straight out of the camera RAW file from the link below and edit to your liking.  The only restriction is to avoid Photoshop and create a composite imageStep 5Add your edit to the event by enterParadigmShift #62013-07-26 09:30:0037G+

paradigmblue8,018Welcome to #ParadigmShift #5For #ParadigmShift #5 I'm sharing with you guys one of my favourite images I recently shot.  Last weekend I did an impromptu short photo walk at a South Melbourne Pier and then ventured off to St Kilda Pier in Melbourne, Australia. See all my pics here: http://www.paradigmblue.org/website/portfolio/sth-melbourne-st-kilda/I found St Kilda Pier fascinating  - not so much being on the actual pier, which was a little boring, but the scenery around the base of the pier - especially the rock platform running parallel along the pier.  One thing that struck me was how long St Kilda Pier actually is - it's huge!It got me thinking about embarking on a project to photograph all of Melbourne's beautiful bay beaches.  Now that would be awesome!! If only I had the time :)Anyway, for #ParadigmShift #5, I'll actually publish below the untouched RAW straight out of the camera for all to see.  As usual, get rid of the dust!  You'll find the RAW pretty much over exposed in the sky - but post production will fix that in a jiffy :)Other details are:Filter: ND400Shutter: 31 secsISO: 50F /13Shot on a Canon 6D (17-40mm) - focal length @ 17mmSo there is plenty to pull out of the RAW file (linked below).  As always, I look forward to your edits.  Please play by the rules :)The RulesStep 1Share this event on your public stream.  Click on the "Share Event" button in the upper right corner of the event.  My goal is for all your circles to know about this and participate if they're interested.  If the above is not done and your image is submitted into the event, I have grounds to delete it.  That sounds harsh I know - but I want this thing to grow and get out there.  It's a small thing to do for access to a RAW file to edit and submit.Step 2If I'm not in your circles, add me :)  Step 3Go nuts and edit, crop, process, HDR, monochrome - whatever floats your boat. Bring out the best of the image according to how you see it.  But try to steer clear of using Photoshop to merge the image with others.  Step 4Add your edit to the event using the "Add Photo's" button in the upper right corner of the event.  You are free to enter multiple edits into the event.Step 5In addition to posting your edit into the event, post it on your public feed and tag me +#ParadigmShift #52013-05-31 11:00:0023G+
Stephen Godfrey65,399Time: 3pm Location: Newtown Train Station (near the street) I will be there no matter the weather conditions. Even if it is raining there will still be plenty of cover around Newtown to shoot while not getting too wet. Sorry for not updating this before now, been a very busy week. Shoot me a message if you have any questions. ---------------------- It has been about a year since the last time I ran a photowalk so I guess it is time to do so again. Once again we will be heading to Newtown with the intention of doing some street photography. Never fear if you are not into street shooting there are plenty of other things around Newtown to keep you occupied, from the Historic Newtown cemetery to lane ways full of graffiti.  If you are new or never tried Street Photography never fear I will help you get started with a small introductory workshop on how to get started. Oh and the reason I run a photo walk at this time of year it coincides to my birthday so why not do something you love doing around your birthday. More details about the start and finish location to follow. PS I cannot promise another rainbow.Newtown Street Photography Photowalk2013-05-25 15:00:0028G+

paradigmblue8,018Hi peeps,Welcome to #ParadigmShift #4First of all, a massive THANK YOU to all who participated in #ParadigmShift #1 - #3. I get a lot of feedback from peeps that they really enjoy this event so thanks for participating and playing by the rules. For #ParadigmShift  #4, I chose an image I had a lot of fun with taking and editing.  As most of you know, I've moved house recently and am still in the process of unpacking in my new home.  After weeks and weeks of this, I needed a sanity break and ventured off to #PortMelbourne  to catch the blue hour around this picturesque part of #Melbourne  #Australia.  If you come to Melbourne by boat, you'll dock into #StationPier  and this is the first glimpse of Melbourne you'll get - the gateway to our city.  In taking this image, I wanted to capture 3 elements - the sunset, the water and the buildings.  To do so, a long exposure using an #ND400 filter was my choice.  You'll notice that I have a dust issue on my sensor so it will be interesting to see those who take the time to clean this up.  Other details are:Filter: ND400Shutter: 30 secsISO: 100F /13Shot on a Canon 6D (24-104mm) - focal length @ 24mmSo there is plenty to pull out of the RAW file (linked below). It's a small thing to do for access to a RAW file to edit and submit.Step 2If I'm not in your circles, add me :)  Step 3Go nuts and edit, crop, process, HDR, monochrome - whatever floats your boat. paradigmblue8,018EDIT:  This event is now closed.  A huge thanks to all who particiapted.  Be sure to add everyone below to your circles - they're all awesome :)Hi peeps,Welcome to #ParadigmShift #3 :)First of all, a massive THANK YOU to all who participated in #ParadigmShift #2 - it was so much fun seeing all the different post processing pics you came up with. For #ParadigmShift  #3, I'm choosing an image close to my heart.  A few weeks ago, my brother +Dave Tomek and I went on a photowalk around #PortMelbourne   #Australia  - such a beautiful place to photograph.  One of the best known locations is #PrincesPier  - it's an absolute photogs delight.  That is, if you manage to dodge all the fishermen and other photogs in the area :)  For the history of the place, check out the Wikipedia article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princes_PierThe posts in the water are what used to be the extension of the original pier - it would've been huge as behind me still stands a rather large pier. The RAW file was taken during the blue hour:Filter: ND400Shutter: 50 secsISO: 50F /13Shot on a Canon 6D (24-104mm) - focal length @ 24mmSo there is plenty to pull out of the RAW file (linked below).  As always, I look forward to your edits.  Please play by the rules :)The Rules- Share this event on your public stream.  My goal here is for all your circles to know about this and participate if they're interested.  - If the above is not done and a pic is submitted into the event, I have grounds to delete it.  That sounds harsh I know - but I want this thing to grow and get out there :)  It's a small thing to do for access to a RAW file to edit and submit.- Go nuts and edit, crop, process whatever floats your boat - bring out the best of the image according to how you see it.  But try to steer clear of using Photoshop to merge the image with others.- Please note, I still retain ownership of copyright on the image as I took it :)- Post you edit into the event using the "Add Photos" option in the upper right.- In addition to posting your edit into the event, post it on your public feed and tag me +paradigmblue so that I can find it.  Be sure to tag it with #ParadigmShift #32013-05-03 01:00:0043G+
paradigmblue8,018Hi guys,Following the fun we had with #ParadigmShift #1 (see: https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/116923280194426907545/116923280194426907545/posts/MaFFcFyE1MX) I thought we may as well jump right into #2 :)Thank you to all the people who participated in #ParadigmShift  #1 - it was so interesting to see the way you guys approached post processing. For #ParadigmShift #2 I have a real treat for you guys.  It's my way of saying thanks to all of you who took the time to participate.  #2 will be a RAW file of one of my favourite pics - "underbelly of a bridge".  I chose this pic because I love it and can't wait to see what you guys come up with - going to be totally fun :)This time I'm setting this up as an event so you can upload your edits into the event so everyone can see what you guys came up with in one place. The Rules- Share this event on your public stream. But try to steer clear of using Photoshop to merge the image with others.- Please note, I still retain ownership of copyright on the image as I took it :)- Post you edit into the event using the "Add Photos" option in the upper right.- In addition to posting your edit into the event, post it on your public feed and tag me +paradigmblue so that I can find it and tag it with #ParadigmShift - with a link to the event - and not to the original RAW file.- And in the words of +Debashis Talukdar " it's worth reiterating that this is not to establish the right or wrong way of treating and image, but more an exercise in exploring how different individuals would interpret the treatment of an image." - Couldn't have said it better - so I won't :)- The event is good to go as you're reading this so don't wait and get to it.  Ends next Friday and the RAW file will be deleted.- And most importantly have fun!  Be sure to add peeps who contribute to this into your circles - they&#ParadigmShift #22013-04-12 15:00:0014G+

Gerard Blacklock23,700Gerry's Australian Photographers Circle Version 3Hey Aussie togs, this is a pretty big update to this circle from the last one, this time I have been more selective in the fact that inactive glus members get booted, the circle was over 600 and as such I needed to comply with 'the less than 500 requirement' hence culling was needed.Note, this is the only circle I share since I really have a interest in local content.Feel free to reshare as you see fit, the main purpose is to facilitate more engagement between local aussie togs. Please feel free to comment and let me know if you know anyone (or if you are indeed one) who is a quality, active and interesting Australian based photographer. Two great communities/themes to get involved with if you like Australia content is #photomaniaustralia +Photo Mania Australia and Australian Landscape Photography https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/1060822645285719679572014-08-13 02:56:2844712320CC G+

Gailen Mapes65,179Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera  G-I- 16 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to June 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting May 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes2014-06-16 10:51:18161316CC G+

Piotr Tymiński7,625My very own circle of PHOTOGRAPHERS v.2A word of thanks to all of you who are a constant source of inspiration for me and a botomless well of beautiful work which is a joy to look at Real people here who post their own work. Amateurs and professionals. And no, I don't care about the number of followers they may have. It's all about the quality and, of course, quality is a very subjective matter so don't get upset with my choice:) I'm sure it can be a great source of inspiration for everybody. Many of the people in the circles have me in their circles and some do not, but take it easy, you don't need to circle me back - it's all about enjoying some great photography. And some of them (what a horror!) do not even call themselves photographers but somehow happily produce content which beats many so called "pro" guys. This circle is obviously under permanent development as new photographers are added when I come around some work I really enjoy. If you are into photography and I've circled you it means you will sooner or later be in this circle. I am simply putting some sense into my contacts - bringing order from chaos, you see... If you are into urbex and derelict climate please look for another circle of mine which is specifically dedicated to such kind of photography.Sharing is alway appreciated. #photographycircles #photographers  #photography #sharedcircles  #topcircles #circleshare #publicsharedcircle2014-05-30 19:07:18415261920CC G+

Piotr Tymiński5,225My very own circle of PHOTOGRAPHERS v.1Real people here who post their own work. If you are into urbex and derelict climate please look for another circle of mine which is specifically dedicated to such kind of photography.Sharing is alway appreciated. #photographycircles #photographers  #photography   #photographycircles  #sharedcircles  #topcircles #circleshare #publicsharedcircle 2014-05-09 17:06:42319291429CC G+

Mark Goodman8,406Introducing the Photographer Inspiration and Engagement circle. This is a collection of photographers I personally find inspiring as well as active and engaging on Google+. My hope is that if you like my work you'll also thoroughly enjoy the posts of those included in this circle.  Who's in the PIE? You knew there'd be a hook right ;)- Mostly Landscape, Cityscape and Architectural photographers.- Share mostly original content.- Photogs that I relate to they way they take a photo, process a photo or that I want to dabble in a similar look to what they achieve.- A few people that have shared me in previous circles with an appreciation for their support.Who's not in the PIE?- A lot of outstanding photographers that may just have a different style or shoot a different genre from my own. You can consider them the ice cream on the side :)- People I haven't discovered even if they might be in my circles and people I may have overlooked. It's a big Google+ ocean but I hope to continue adding people that fit this particular circle in the future. - No spammers or non-photography related streams. If you find that's not the case please send me a message. Please add and reshare the circle so others may enjoy what I think is an extremely high quality circle.Have a great day and enjoy your enhanced content stream!2014-04-06 16:56:5721024720CC G+

Italy, Sorrento Coast and Mount Vesuvius

+Dianne Hall  and I decided to explore along the coast of Sorrento to see what views could be had and more importantly find a nice place to eat that night. Well we struck gold on both fronts. Just 10mins from our accommodation we found a cafe for afternoon tea above the Spiaggia Restaurant that had views of Sorrento coastline to the left and spectacular views of Hotel Corallo with Mount Vesuvius in the background. This was a public viewing area so there were no issues with setting up a tripod for a few shots. The clear waters below and large cave in the cliff face just made a perfect scene.

Then to top it off we had dinner at the Spiaggia Restaurant that night. A little pricey as it was more of a fine dining restaurant and we were not dressed to impress so I felt a little uncomfortable at the beginning. Our waiter sat us by the window... more »

Venice and the Black Bulky Beast

So my Olympus OMD EM5 has been put out of action due to a careless night in Florence and getting too close to a laser show. In comes plan B. +Dianne Hall has with her my old Nikon D90 as her backup camera to her Samsung Galaxy camera. I know what you're thinking.... she is leaving the better camera in the bag but in her words "It's just so heavy and bulky." I can't argue with that. After caring around my Oly this feels like a boat anchor. Playing tourist for 12 to 18 hours a day this was going to kill me. Well at least I don't have to carry around the tripod for the daylight hours. :))) As I said in the last post, I did actually forget where the on/off switch was on the Nikon. It's only been about 6 months..... or maybe even more since I retired this black bulky beast in favour of the Oly EM5.

Dubai Marina - Jet Lag, BAH HUM BUG

Alarm goes off at 1am Sydney time on the 31st March then head hits the pillow just after 1am 1st April Dubai time. With no sleep during the 14hr 20min flight, thats a total of 32hrs on the go.

Jet lag, BAH HUM BUG…. we’ve got a city to explore.

The Dubai Marina was just a short walk from our hotel so I took the opportunity to test out the +Olympus  OMD EM5 with the Oly 12mm f2 lens at night. The lights on the edge of this building were slowly moving up and down so a 4 sec exposure was enough to capture it midway through its cycle at maximum length. Of course I had it mounted to a tripod and triggered with a remote shutter to reduce vibration. This lens has become my default night time / low light shooter for handheld images. A task my D7000 couldn’t complete and that’s why I left it at home.

The cameras+Dianne Hal... more »

Venice, Goodbye D90

This is the last image taken with the Nikon D90 during our resent holiday roaming around Europe. For a 6 year old camera model it still holds up with image quality. It's just a shame it doesn't have the Olympus 5 axis image stablilisation and size. The 2 things I missed the most while my Oly OMD EM5 was retired after having it's sensor zap by a laser show in Florence. I wanted to travel light throughout our 3 month vacation and capturing shots after sunset or dimly lit interiors with the D90 requires tripod shooting which is what I was trying to avoid. This was a holiday first, photography second trip.

So as we weaved our way around the alleyways of Venice we stumbled upon one of, if not only, camera store on the island and in the window was a camera that arrived in that same morning. The Olympus OMD EM1. My heart skipped a beat, my credit card...

My heart skipped a beat, my credit card switched and I almost broke out in a cold sweat as GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) raged through my body. Now I had been shooting with the EM5 for a while now and fitted it out with the additional battery grip allowing me the luxury of having 2 batteries and a more solid grip on the camera. When I compared the sizes of the 2 cameras the EM1 with it's inbuilt hand grip was actually smaller in dimensions compared with the EM5 with battery grip.

Now the price I would have to pay for this camera, I could have almost bought a Sony A7 back home but that would be no good to me here and now. I would also have to reinvest in a new lens system. Something I couldn't justify for my needs. So I did what any crazy GAS affected photographer would do with a freshly paid off, zero balance owing on credit card, with many Micro Four Thirds lenses, I bit the bullet and purchased the EM1. I felt guilty as hell at the time but am totally glad I purchased it. Olympus and I go together like a hand in a glove. We are both not perfect but man..... we have created some fantastic images over the 3 months away. If your camera is a burden every time you go to shoot with it, that's not going to add to your creativity and vision. Something every photographer requires in bucket loads.

Shot with NikonD90, Tokina 11 - 16mm f2.8 at f8, ISO 200, 15sec without a tripod with the camera sitting on the side of the bridge.

Venice, It's All Blue Baby

Just a typical scene on the canals in Venice. Nothing too complex going on here compositionally as the attracting element is the colour blue. Not every shot has to be a work of art. Sometimes we take an image just for the sake of memory.

Venice, Waiting....Waiting....Click

Sometimes you walk into a scene and the photo is blatantly obvious. Everything is there in the frame. Great light conditions, interesting subject matter etc. All you need to do is compose and shoot. This on the other hand required a little more. It had good light creating an interest mood, the colouring of the stone told the story of the many years of flooding and rising damp, the blue water of the canal and an example of the many bridges that span them. However it needed that little bit more to complete the story, a gondola of course. This is where another skill is required to finalise this image, patience.

When we came across the setting I knew it had great potential. From the middle of the bridge I saw that the gondolas would be passing by this archway and could visualise how the image would look from inside while still on the bridge. All I... more »

When we came across the setting I knew it had great potential. From the middle of the bridge I saw that the gondolas would be passing by this archway and could visualise how the image would look from inside while still on the bridge. All I had to do was set the correct exposure so that I had a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the moving gondola, keep my ISO as low as possible to prevent noise and an acceptable aperture for the desired depth of field. Then wait for the right moment where I could capture just the first half of the boat without any people in the frame. If there were people in this image the eye would be drawn to them and I didn't want that.

Now to this image. As you can tell by the shadows this was captured in the worst possible light, the midday sun but I knew the dynamic range of the Nikon could pull out the details in the dark shadows to present a decent image from just one shot. All I had to do was get a good composition and right timing to came away with a story telling image. I also knew that the 11-16mm Tokina lens set to 11mm on this crop factor camera would distort and stretch certain parts of the image. All of which I'm totally cool with. Slanting buildings and stretched lines to me add a little something to guide the eyes around the frame. We all have our different ways of doing things.

With Venice as our next destination I was going to miss my little EM5. I did have another camera but it was a Panasonic TZ40 point and shoot. Could I get decent photos with this? At the time I thought I should transfer them over WiFi onto my Nexus 7 (1st edition) to see what was possible from this small sensor camera. I'll share this eye opening story with you after I post my Nikon D90 images of Venice.

Oh well Nikon D90 it would be for now as the main camera........just need to remember how to turn the bulky black beast on. How quickly we forget when we get use to a new system.

If anyone has any ideas on how much it would cost to get the sensor replaced or even worth the effort, it would be greatly appreciated.

This is a screen capture from a video as I don't have the actual footage of the exact moment this happened. RIP EM5 :(

The Moment Before

We had walked around Florence, Italy for over 12hrs and decided that as it was past midnight we should head back to hour hotel for a bit of shut eye. That's when the plan came unstuck. As +Dianne Hall and I turned a corner we were presented with a stream of light blasting out from a lane way. So how could we not investigate this. What we found in the Piazza della Signoria in the middle of the night was like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow or was it??? A rehearsal of an up coming light show with lasers and fog machines.   :))))  To top it off, there were only a handful of people in the entire piazza to witness it.

I shot a lot of photos in a short period of time and this was the pick of the bunch. If only they were kissing then that would have been perfect....oh well, what could have been doesn't matter and what happened does. As Ist... more »

Blue Hour In Florence

Now back to our big 3 month Europe vacation. The old section of Florence is a sight to behold especially the Cathedral with it's ornate Gothic and Renaissance architecture you can see here on the right. Coming from a country where our oldest building architectures are at most 200yrs old, seeing buildings dating back to the late 13th century just blows my mind. We spent 4 nights here as we had book tours of Tuscany and Cinque Terra and only visited the old section of town on our last night. Definitely needed more time to explore, I know we missed so much. So this is just a little street scene captured near the #FlorenceCathedral  during blue hour. About 20mins after sunset.

Florence wont be forgotten too quickly for many reasons which I will share very soon.

Cut Off

I thought I would take advantage of the large tide that cuts off the #MonaValePool  from the mainland the night of the #SuperMoon . If it was a perfect world I would be shooting this right on sunset or sunrise on a weekend. So I was lucky that the 2m tide peaked 2hrs after the moon rise. I also wanted to test out the #OlympusOMDEM1  with longer exposures of 1 minute plus. I knew there would be more noise due to the smaller Micro Four Thirds sensor but was surprised by amount that occurred. If I had used a Pro or even a Premium quality lens it would have reduced the noise even more.  I shot this from a distance so I could look down onto the pool, using the Olympus 40 - 150mm f4 - 5.6 (80 - 300mm full frame equivalent) at 49mm. I think I better start saving for the Pro quality lenses 12 - 40mm f2.8 (24 - 80mm FF) which is currently available, 40 - 150mm f2.8 which is rumouredto... more »

Streach Photography

While waiting for the Super Moon to reappear from behind the clouds, this young boy walks down from Mona Vale Pool and once his feet are on the sand bursts into a sprint. I already had my focus and exposure set and with the remote shutter in my hand I instinctively took this shot before he exited the frame. I love the motion blur and how his arms and one leg  are more recognisable. Also love that one foot is in the air while the other is grounded. A combination of Street and Beach Photography. In the background you can see +Harmeet Gabha hunting around for a good composition.

Super Moon, The Chains That Bind Us

The passing of Robin Williams today was an unpleasant reminder that depression can exist even if you bring joy to the world through laughter. Some only laugh to distract themselves temporarily from the pain of their own thoughts. Then some distract themselves through alcohol and drugs or a combination of all three. If you think you have any symptoms, talk to family and friends about it and go to you doctor. You will rarely overcome depression by yourself.

Rest In Peace Robin Williams, the world will never laugh the same again.

I'm interrupting my our Europe Vacation images to post a few images taken during this years #SuperMoon  event. I was going to create another album but thought I have too many so I'll post them into the location they were taken at. That being Mona Vale Beach, +Sydney . I met up with +Harmeet Gabha to capture this years event which was a slight let down due to clouds on the horizon and a thin blanket of smoke from winter bushfire burn offs.   Once the moon poked it's head above the clouds on the horizon, it had already lost its impact. Then we only had a tiny time frame before it hide again behind another cloud band. So the image I had in mind before arriving had to be abandoned try to come up with something creative. There were nice layers of soft colour tones in the sky and cloud so I composed them with the harsh tones and image of the sea pool chain fence and stained concrete.

I have 3 more images to share taken that night. 2 beach/street photography style images and 1 taken later that night.

Our waiter sat us by the window... more »

Our waiter sat us by the window overlooking the Sorrento coast and made us feel at ease with light banter and took our orders. We thought we had won the lottery stumbling onto this place. The service was first class and the food even better. If you’re
looking to take that someone special out for a celebratory meal and live in this area, I highly recommend the Spiaggia Restaurant.

I can see why Elia Locardi loves this region of Italy. It has freaking amazing views.

We arrive late the in afternoon, struggle down the station stairs with our bags, walk through the railway under pass and walk smack face to face with these guys!!!! WOAH!!!! It looks like the Klan are on the move. As we stand there 2 foreigners in a strange land watching the group get bigger and bigger we thought our luck had run out. It was strange seeing the locals enjoying this gathering and encouraging their kids to dress up and participate. +Dianne Hall being the inquisitive type ask one of the locals what all this was about. It turns out they weren't the Klu Klux Klan but a religious procession representing the mourning of Mary for her dead son Jesus. In a few days time they would do a similar procession this time dress in white celebrating the resurrection. What a welcoming party!!!

So after a few nerve easing photos we continued on to our bungalow. On arrival we noticed the caretaker setting up candles all down the driveway of the resort. Guess what? The procession we saw earlier would be passing right past our bungalow that night. :)))) How lucky were we.

This is the start of a new and large album containing our 3 week journey across Italy.

Austin, Gate Keeper Of Malta

Sometimes in life you meet a person who is so self centered they wouldn’t help a fellow photographer in need as Brian Matiash found out recently. On the other hand there are people in this world who go above and beyond to help. Austin, the gentleman in this photo was such a person.

He was our “tourist guide” around Malta in April on his days off. He had a few more free days lately as he has been battling cancer for more than a year and was in the chemotherapy stage of his treatment. He even insisted that he take us out the day after a chemo treatment. I think he knew time was running out but lived each day as if it was his last. If you have ever visited Malta by cruiseliner he may have help you too.

As sea pilot it was his duty to meetup the the cruise vessel before it entered the Maltese harbour, climb aboard and instruct the Captain on the safe passage to the port. We were lucky to be part of one such encounter meeting up with a vessel carrying 5000 people and watch this man climb aboard from a bobbing pilot boat. He made it look so easy. He also had an unbelievable knowledge of the Maltese history and politics. He was a proud Maltese man who loved his country and culture almost as much as he loved his family. One day a week he take care of his aging mother and spend the night with her.  Bernadette, his wife (another angel of Malta) and with he would feed about 30 stray cats that had been abandoned in a local park. Having that many cats in one area you would think they would breed and reach plague proportions but they had a remedy for that. They had teamed up with a local vet and for a small fee would have them desexed. All funded from their own pocket.

+Dianne Hall  and I have found memories of Malta. A big part of that was due to this man and his family. In this photo, Austin took me on tour around his local area explaining all the religious statues and churches that were on every corner you turned, while the ladies taught Dianne how to make Figoli, a traditional Easter Maltese large biscuit.  He even managed for us to visit a bakery to witness the making of the beautiful Maltese bread in a wood fired oven. Man I loved that bread. The best in all of Europe thanks to the salt produced at the Gozo salt pans.

That was back in April. Within 2 weeks of our return to Oz in July, Austin passed away.

We expect to bury our parents but to have to bury your sons or daughters…...that pain is unimaginable. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. He will be sorely missed.___

Gozo Citadella...You Didn't Tell Us About This.

So my father-in-law was raised on the door step just below one of Malta's fortified towns dating back to 1500 BC and it slips his mind about telling anyone about it. Are you serious??? If this was my playground growing up the whole family would know about it. Castles built by the Knights of St John with it's panoramic view of the island of Gozo, how could you forget?

It goes to show what we consider our boring neighbourhood we take for granted could be a dream destination for another.

Balluta Bay - Living The High Life

It's good to be back in Oz and I'm slowly getting through editing images from our 3 month Long Service Leave tour of Europe. So now it's time to flood your streams with the highlights of our journey. I probably have enough for the rest of the year if I post one a day.  :)

So to get back in the swing of things here on G+, this image was taken from the penthouse of our gracious host who pulled some strings and got us 5 star accommodation at the Le Meridien in Saint Julians, Malta at 2.5 star prices. :)))  The view from our balcony was good but not this good.

An interesting update to my image of Dubai Marina that was stolen. It seems it has done the rounds on FB by a few Dudai sites with over 12,000 likes. I downloaded an app Search By Image to my Nexus 7 and it uses Googles Tineye program to search the web. I'm starting to rethink the whole debate about watermarking my images as I don't want to upload lower res files here. :( I know this is the nature of the web and it will happen again in the future so at least if its watermarked with a website people could easily find their way back to my images.

The main offender was https://www.facebook.com/ILoveDubaiCity

St Marija Assunta - You Did This

"YOU DID THIS!!!"

"Hey Mary, don't play the guilt game with me. I wasn't there."

That was the feeling that overwhelmed me when I turned around and saw Mary pointing at me while in this church in Malta. I thought churches were meant to be a place of worship and respect. Someone forgot to tell Mary this. I guess with a resume with a job description of "Mother of God" you can forgive her for that.

Rotunda Of St Marija Assunta - Miracle Of Mosta

Our next destination to be shared is Malta!!! This tiny island 80km south of Sicily holds a special place in our hearts as it’s the birthplace of Dianne’s parents, relatives still living there and a village full of previously unknown cousins. This was a journey for Dianne to visit the country of her parents and discover its rich history and memories she first encountered more than 40 years ago. We were there 2 weeks and for a small island it has so much to see. I didn’t do it justice with my images as there were more photo opportunities missed. Next time we return I’ll be hiring a car and getting to those missed locations in the right light conditions.

Imagine this, sitting in your local church awaiting the evening mass on the 9th April 1942, air-raid sirens screaming wondering whether you should be heading for the underground shelters below the church (as Dianne’s mum remembers vividly and the reason for our visit) or test your faith in God as 300 people did that day. Well, someone was looking after them as two bombs bounced off the great dome however a third pierced through the roof, bounced off a wall and landed before the altar without exploding or injuring anyone inside the church. Shear luck, maybe, but for those inside it would have seemed like a miracle. Me, I would have been out of their quick smart to change my undies…. ;)

So to dramatise this image for the story told, I underexposed it to capitalise on the ray of light shining through the dome.

The cameras +Dianne Hall   has in her bag are the Samsung Galaxy Camera and a Nikon D90. The latter is rarely used as she prefers the portability and ease of use. I think this trip has turned her into a Jpeg shooter :( I need to pass on my EM5 to her and swing her back to RAW. This will now happen when we get back home thanks to an incident in Florence……..but that’s for another post.  :(  :)))) I have taken the Olympus OMD EM5 and the Panasonic TZ40 point and shoot, as recommended at the time of purchase as a great travel companion by +Gordon Laing  on www.cameralabs.com .  I can say it has lived up to all expectations. Having a good P+S with fantastic zoom abilities has been a fun experience as I found out in Malta.

As our 3 month long Europe vacation is now more than half completed, I have a stack of images to process and post. We have been enjoying the late sunset times here by having late dinners and even later bedtimes. Averaging 1am heads on pillows and lights out which makes photo editing a little difficult. This holiday was a vacation first and photography journey second. Trying to find the right balance between the two can be tricky at times but I have stuck to our goals. Spending quality time with +Dianne Hall is a dream come true and a moment that i’ll never forget. The travel bug has bitten us both so there will be more adventures both vacation and PHOTOGRAPHY TOURS in the near future. :))))

The rain has stopped and the sun has poked through the clouds so it’s time to explore the Britanny region of France. This will be the last image from Dubai and next up it’s Malta’s turn.

Midnight at the Palms

After a recent profile clearout I realised this image was missing from my new albums. This was my most successful image in 2013 both on social media and in winning the B&W section of the National Focus Awards.

Every now and then I see it pop up in some places and while I don't have too many issues with how it's used, it does annoy me a bit that +Marc Lafontan continues to use it as a cover image, despite my nice attempts to ask him to credit the image or take it down. Perhaps a reminder here will help :)___A good friend of mine +Grant Galbraith has had his international award winning image used by +Marc Lafontan as his cover photo with no credit given. Dubai Sunset - Run Forest, Run

"So how many people will we be picking up? " I said to our Arabian Adventures 4WD tour guide.

"Only 7 in total" he replies.

Sweet I thought. Only a handful of people to contend with while creating a few images. I can handle that. Our agenda for the evening was first visit a Falconry display then watch a Dubai Desert sunset and then onto an Arabian dinner Bedouin style under the stars. This was going to be AWESOME!!! As we approached our destination in the Dubai Desert Conservation Park I noticed a few more 4WDs entering the park and they were from the same company that picked +Dianne Hall and I up at our hotel. Mmmmm maybe there will be a few more people to contend with at sunset. The odds of getting sand dunes without foot prints were increasingly swaying in favour of next to none. :(

Mmmmm maybe there will be a few more people to contend with at sunset. The odds of getting sand dunes without foot prints were increasingly swaying in favour of next to none. :(

We are dropped off and told our guide will be back once the Falconry show ends to take us to the sunset location. Following the ever increasing crowd to the seating area revealed even more people than I thought. At least 100 there to witness the show. Bugger, I hope they all aren't going to watch sunset too. :/ Anyway the show ends after about 1/2 hr and I starting to panic as golden hour has already started so we need to get to our location very quickly to capture what looks like an amazing sunset. Our guide picks us up and we are the 4th car to head off into the desert. The odds swing back in my favour. :))) We slide this way and that over dunes and even get airborne at times. I don't know how many times my head just missing cracking into the roof of the 4WD. I can see Dianne's knuckles turning white with her vice like grip on the hand rail above her head. Her screams of terror mixed with pleasure was a bit confusing at times. As we approached our last dune and crested its peak the horror set in. I could see about 50 4WDs all park in various positions. BUGGER!!!!!  This was going to be a nightmare to get a pristine shot of footless prints in the dunes and to top it off the sun was setting FAST.

Jumping out of the 4WD removing my boots and socks, I turned to the fading sun and RAN!!! I kept on running over dune after dune trying to pass all the other tourists just to witness this event. I ran past the photographers who want to capture a Dubai Sunset and then kept running all along keeping an eye out for a suitable composition. The sun was putting on a very nice display but I still hadn't found the right location, so I kept running. After about the fourth dune crossing I came to this location, dropped to my knees and setup the tripod. A few quick snaps and the sun was gone. Job completed. :))) Now to eat under the stars Bedouin style but first I need to find where the 4WDs are..........

3HRS OVERTIME - DUBAI

So no epic sunset shots to be had and with that in mind we decided to make the best use of our time by visiting the Emirates Palace, not far from the mosque and return at night. We were at the Palace for about a half an hour and when the sky was just entering the "blue hour" phase. I had lined up an interesting shot of a few skyscrapers of different shapes and sizes when security came and told us we could not us tripods on the Palace foregrounds. Being a guest in a foreign country I didn't want to play the dumb tourist line just to get the shot. I was a nice enough shot but not worth the risk. By the time we located our driver and jumped back into the limo, (it wasn't a limo but some sort of expensive Audi that I would never be able to afford to ride in again) night had fallen. During the day the mosque looked big but at night all light up, man this site was AWESOME!!!!! The beauty was breath taking. The peace and tranquillity we experienced here during the day was nothing compared to at night. I felt like sitting down and soaking it all in for the rest of the night till dawn. The most moving spiritual encounter I have had to this day and one I'll never forget. However I couldn't do this as our time was almost up and shots had to be made. Well that was the plan. Our guide was extremely gracious and allowed us a bit of extra time. We were supposed to be back at the hotel by 8pm, we arrived back at 11pm. Ooooppss. Mohamed our guide received a nice tip for accommodating our needs and for that we feel blessed for this experience.

I'm posting this from Verona, Italy. The home of Romeo and Juilet and tomorrow we will be driving over 4hrs to Switzerland. I have one more image to post about Dubai so hopefully I can find the time soon to post it. We have been averaging getting to bed around 1am, so hopefully we won't have to walk so much to see the sights now we have a car and be home back at a reasonable hour. Then again maybe not...... You only live once this lifetime so make the most of it.

STUCK IN CUSTOMS - DUBAI

As this is the 4th week into our 3 month Europe vacation, I thought It was time to post a blog about our first stop, Dubai.

We hired a car from Sydney airport the day before for $67, a lot cheaper than the $100 taxi fare. That way we could sleep easier knowing we would get to the airport on time for our 6am flight Monday 31st March. Our travel agent suggested we be at the airport 3hrs before our flight which meant getting up at 1am to shower and finalise packing and leave by 2am for the hour journey. Arriving with plenty of time to spare, we dropped off the car, checked our bags in and then processed to the customs check. That's when the fun began. I forgot to take out Dianne's laptop from my carry on bag and customs couldn't get a proper X-ray and needed to be hand searched. I forgot to take out Dianne's laptop from my carry on bag and customs couldn't get a proper X-ray and needed to be hand searched. They opened the bag and when i went to remove the laptop from the hidden sleeve pocket i was told not to touch the bag. Removing it they then proceeded to search the rest of the contents which consisted of all my photography gear. Olympus OMD EM5, lenses, batteries, remote shutter release, cables and chargers. Then they found my lenses filter case. I knew this was going to be a problem. The case is sealed with a zipper and spending so much time by the sea the it's difficult to undo. Of course they couldn't open it and had to give it to me. So much for not touching.  ;) With the inspection complete and customs satisfied I wasn't a terrorist, we were on our 14hr 20min trip to Dubai. Hopefully we could get some sleep before landing at 1.20pm, the same day, then exploring the city before dinner then bed.

Oh I nearly forgot, on landing and connecting to free WiFi at our hotel (Radisson Blue Media City) I discovered I had won a copy of +Trey Ratcliff's latest 10hr HDR Tutorial. Thanks Trey. :))) I'll be downloading it when I get home in July and going through it and re-editing this photo and a few more while getting over jet lag. Maybe "Stuck In Customs" was a sign of better things to come.

I've waffled on enough in this post so I'll explain all the details about his location and how we got there on the next post. Suffice to say this is the Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I think I've captured it from a corner angle not shot before which is important when shooting a well photographed location. My next image to post is more of the typical shot front on.

Collaroy Beach Storm Cloud

The second image from my #CollaroyBeach  shoot on the northern suburbs of +Sydney .

Thanks to the cloud cover at sunrise my shooting time was extended far beyond the “Golden Hour” a few weeks ago. After capturing the first image I didn’t have to move far to come up with another composition. As the tide was coming in the waves had pushed me back to a more “dry lens” position. Moving back a few meters I observed the waves now spilling over the previously dry rocks and crevasses. I knew if I got low enough with a wide focal length I could really have an eye catching foreground interest that would lead the eye to the crashing waves, then to the menacing storm front approaching.

I’m loving this +Olympus OMD E-M5 with the Olympus 9-18mm f4-5.6 lens. I feel reassured with my decision to leave the Nikon D7000 at home for the rest of the year.

No Sunrise For You

A few weeks ago I snuck out for a very rare sunrise shoot at #CollaroyBeach   on the northern suburbs of #Sydney  . We had several storms that week and the weather forecast was for a late morning shower so I thought I might get a dramatic sunrise or at least a moody image. Well the photography Gods tried to pull the rug from under me by hiding the Sun with a blanket of clouds but little do they know I love shooting in these conditions. If the clouds are thin enough they act as a giant softbox casting beautiful even light which can last for hours extending your shooting time beyond the standard “Golden Hour”.

In this photo you can just make out the storm front on the distant horizon that was heading my way. I could tell by my Rain Radar App that it would hit in about an hour and would have plenty of time to get back to the car which was about 200maway. ... more »

In this photo you can just make out the storm front on the distant horizon that was heading my way. I could tell by my Rain Radar App that it would hit in about an hour and would have plenty of time to get back to the car which was about 200m away. A couple of other photographers turned up to shoot the non event sunrise, took a few shots, chatted amoungst themselves and left shortly after. I guess they were locals and would come back another day when the conditions were more to their liking. Me on the other hand, I had to get up 3hrs before sunrise to get here and was going to milk every moment I could get from this location I hadn’t visited before. I’m glad I did. The next 3 photos taken were when the storm front was within spitting distance.

This is just the warm up for the next image, which is my favourite from this series. They say good things come to those who wait. Well I did and “it did”. I wasn’t too concerned about rain as I’m shooting with the Olympus OMD EM5 but I don’t think the Oly 9-18mm is weather resistant and the occasional splash on the gear is expected. The gamble I take to get the shot.

No camera upgrades for a while just better lenses for the EM5. My D7000 has every lens I need and it’s taking a back seat this year. Camera bodies come and go but lenses can last a lifetime so it’s the better investment. So is photography education and travel, which I plan to attend more workshops in the future and travel a lot more. Local and abroad.

I haven’t been active on here for a while as we are preparing our 3 month, 11 countries Europe vacation which starts in exactly 2 weeks. I don’t think Dianne Hall counted the number of countries we will be visiting as 11 in numerology is a master number and it’s also my Ruling Number. (She has been doing numerology part time for over 20 years.)

“The 11 symbolizes the potential to push the limitations of the human experience into the stratosphere of the highest spiritual perception; the link between the mortal and the immortal; between man and spirit; between darkness and light; ignorance and enlightenment. This is the ultimate symbolic power of the 11.” Sourced from the net and not Dianne as she was in bed at the time of drafting this.

We have been told by good friends that this journey will be life changing. It looks like they may be right.  :))

If I walk into one of those webs unexpectantly, I'm jumping and screaming like a girl!!!! Luckily for us we had our brave local guide +Johny Spencer carefully removing the webs and spiders with his outstretched tripod. Everytime he relocated the potiential killers he would say "Sorry guys" but not to us but to THEM!!!!!

Anyway, we all made it to the edge of the dunes without too much traumatisation for our "Dune Etiquette" briefing. We could explore wherever we wanted but keep in mind that your footprints in the sand could ruin another photographers shot or at least give them a bit of cloning practise. If someone else had traveled where you wish to go, walk in their footsteps until you changed course. Then only place your tripod down on the sand when you are sure of your composition. I wanted the classic B&W contrasy ripple scene low to the ground but due to the overcast weather this shot had to wait till there was a break in the conditions much later in the morning. If the sun was any higher the ripple shadows would be lost. Combining this with a large curving ridge line droping off into darkness with a backdrop of clouds, I had now captured the shot I was looking for with the aid of +onOne Software #PerfectB&W.

I'm tagging +Leonard Metcalf in this post to give me a little feedback. Len is a photographer/educator from Sydney who ran a 1hr workshop on B&W photography as part of the Blue Mountains Photography Club Workshop weekend a few years ago I attended. He explained how he use to trek around the Blue Mountains in Sydney carring a large format camera photographing the mountain reagions. Then had change to a smaller Olympus Pen micro fourthirds camera (this was a few years ago so it may have been either the EP1, EP2 or EP3) and was thrilled with the results he was getting. I think this is when my interest in the Olympus system originated which ended up me purchasing the EM5 a few years later which this shot was taken with. Len has only recently been active on G+ again and deserves more followers than the 90 he has. There is a weath of undiscovered knowledge and talent on G+ and +Leonard Metcalf is one of them.

Try Again

The image I had intended to share was going to be a Focus Stacking image from the +Jay Patel & +Varina Patel Port Stephens Photography Workshop held earlier this month but i failed with the image. :( I chose a poor subject, wrong composition forgot to check my ISO setting which I was playing around with and it was way too high. I just totally got it wrong but I did learn from the process. I had never focus stacked before so physically shooting it one has helped with that learning process. There was also the gained knowledge using Photoshop to combine all the images and the processing of it. So not a total lose as I have moved that one step closer to a better image. :))

This image was taken at "Big Rocky" after we had dinner at the beach on day 2 of the workshop. I had left +Dianne Hall with all my Hitech slot filters to play with and headed off looking for a good composition for sunset. I'm not use to shooting into the sun even at sunrise. ( Who gets up that early in the morning...are they crazy!!!! ;) Yeah I know I should make the effort more often and plan on doing so this year.) Here at Port Stephens you can do both sunrise and sunsets into the sun. What a crazy place this is. So here I was no grad filters and only armed with a B+W ND110 10stop filter. I could see the sun moving lower into the band of clouds on the horizon creating a nice reverse grad filter effect and fitted the filter to my Olympus OMD EM5 and captured this. I think the Oly did well under these conditions.

Morning Before Part 2

Reassessing.

This would be the last image seeing with my eyes. The following 3 days at the +Jay Patel & +Varina Patel Port Stephens Photography Workshop opened my eyes up to a whole new way of seeing. I now had a glimpse through the "Patel Eyes" and a trip down to the ocean will never be the same again. Normally I take a ultra wide lens (Nikon 12-24mm) and maybe a super zoom lens (Nikon 28-300mm). Now I'll be taking the Nikon 105mm f2.8 Macro lens. If I continue with my experiment and only shoot with the Olympus OMD EM5 for the remainder of the year, I will either have to buy more lenses to fill in the missing millimeter reach or revert back to my Nikon D7000.

If I continue with my experiment and only shoot with the Olympus OMD EM5 for the remainder of the year, I will either have to buy more lenses to fill in the missing millimeter reach or revert back to my Nikon D7000.

Since returning from the workshop I have been reassessing why I want to move to a smaller camera system. When I'm out shooting Seascapes or Landscapes I want to take the best camera I have that will perform all the tasks that is required of it. Capturing the best image possible should be the final goal. It's not an issue of weight while shooting or having the camera around my neck or tripod. It's the fact that I have a lot of accessories that I like to take when out shooting such as, a set of Hitech neutral density (1, 2, 3, 5 stops) and grad filters (1, 2, 3 stops) with holder, a Lee Big Stopper 10 stop filter, a B+W Nd110 10 stop filter, a cheap and nasty 2-8 stop variable neutral density filter, circular poloriser filter, wireless remote, with backup batteries, a wired remote as a backup to the wireless remote, an air blower to remove dust from lenses and sensor, numorous lens cleaning cloths,  micro fibre towel for wiping the camera dry,  headlamp, torch, beanie, jumper, zip on trouser legs for my Grasshopper shorts incase it gets cold during or after a shoot, water bottle, 1 spare battery for the D7000 or 3 spare batteries for  the EM5. The Nikon still beats the Oly for battery performance. A SB 700 flash with wireless triggers, Rogue flash benders and grids, wallet, car / house keys, phone, sunglasses and water bottle. Yeah I know that's a lot of gear to carry around but there's more I would like to have with me. A SB 700 flash with wireless triggers, Rogue flash benders and grids, a second hand Nikon FM2 film camera that my 50mm f1.8 lens works with. I think the image count is up to 8 and still have 16 more shots before I get the first roll processed. It would be nice to see how or if the light meter in the camera works and run a few more colour rolls through before switching to the more expensive B&W Illford PanF Plus 50.

So the problem comes down to carrying all the gear I require comfortably. Over the past 4 years I have bought 8 bags / belt / strap / sling systems and can not carry a portion of this comfortably all day. Well I have found the solution. I was lucky to have the chance to carry a fully loaded "professional kit system" in a +f-stop  Satori EXP bag courtesy of Jay Patel for over an hour before their flight back to the States recently. That bag was so comfortable and practical that after wearing it I'm going to buy one for myself. +Dianne Hall even wore Varina's F-stop Loka bag that was 3 times the weight she normally carries and complains about it. We are still undecided about buying the Loka or the smaller Guru bag for her but know we will be buying two bags very soon.

I feel that the best investment of my money to get the best images I can at this point in time is to buy an F-stop bag. I'll be shooting a lot more variety of images this year and need the right tools for the trade to do so comfortably. I also need to update my tripod to a more user friendly system, but that's a whole new post subject.

Patel Port Stephens Photography Workshop. Day 2

Walking On Water And The Voice Of God.

Day 2 of the +Jay Patel & +Varina Patel Workshop saw us meet for a sunrise shoot at One Mile Beach. Determined not to be late +Dianne Hall and I arrive half an hour earlier than the planned 5am get together. We were the first ones there and started to wonder if we got the location wrong when the rest of the group started to arrive. As the sky lightened up just enough to see where you were walking and the last of the group arrived, we all headed down to the beach. Once there I fired up the Sun Seeker app on my Nexus 5 to see where the sun would be poking it's head out on the horizon. Our entry point to the beach was on the southern side near the headland and the app told me I needed to walk further up the beach away from the headland to get a glimps.

Our entry point to the beach was on the southern side near the headland and the app told me I needed to walk further up the beach away from the headland to get a glimps.

I could see that there were no rocks to be composed as foreground interest within a reasonable walking distance so I decided to try using the incoming waves as the immediate interest. The shots I fired off were not doing it for me and as I was looking for another composition Jay wondered over and suggested using the wave as a leading lines to the headland. I'm sure if I had the "Patel Eyes" I would find the images I was seeking. None of the shots I took so far were the keeper for the morning. The day started with cloud cover over the horizon and as the Sun climbed higher small breaks in the clouds formed and rays of light streamed down to the ocean. This is when I wished I had a longer focal length lens. The 50mm maxium on the Olympus OMD EM5 needed to be at least 4 times longer for the shot I required. The best I could do was turn on the inbuilt teleconvert (x2 digital zoom). Still about 100mm too short. Then I noticed a stand up paddle boarder making his way into the scene. All I had to do was wait for the moment he entered the sweet spot and capture the moment. There he was, walking on water while the voice of God broke through the clouds. :))) Now my job was done.

Tomorrow I'll break the flow of workshop images with the second part of the  "Morning Before" sunrise shoot.

This was the same beach where earlier today we scouted around the rock pools for macro and focus stacking practise so I thought I knew the way. I was wrong. By the time I realised my mistake, fired up Google Maps for navigation and arrived at the beach we only had 5mins before the sun was to dip below the horizon. Everyone else were here 5 mins before us and were happily firing away. +Dianne Hall and I rushed down to the beach searching for a composition to shoot. I could see most people were composing with rocks in the foreground but it was too crowded over there so I just chose to shoot the reflections on the long shallow sloping beach. I can't tell you what filters I use to control the light as it was a real rush job. I was still amazed that I was shooting a setting sun from a beach. All the beaches in Sydney face east but here the bay is so large you are facing west. Hard to believe that this morning I shot the sun rising over the ocean and now shooting a setting sun over the same ocean. What a heavenly place the Port Stephens area is.

This was the first shot I took and the following 5 images taken with different compositions were not as pleasing as this. If only I had been here 5 mins earlier the colours would have been more vibrant.

Tomorrows post will be the first image from Day 2 titled "Walking On Water And The Voice Of God."

Patel Port Stephens Photography Workshop. Day 1

Tripod Sutra and A Lesson On Macro Photography.

After our Hyperfocal outing in Fishermans Bay, we stopped for lunch and rested until 4pm where we would meet up for our Macro photography practise at Birubi Beach at Anna Bay. It was low tide leaving plenty of rock pool formations for us to find suitable subjects to shoot. Now I have had my fair share of roaming around the rocks and rock pools along the Sydney coastland and have glanced occasionally into the pool formations with little interest. This time it was different. Now I was seeing with "Patel Eyes" and with a little trick +Jay Patel performed to encourage the lifeless uninteresting black blob to blossom into a colourful red Sea Urchin the "tripod sutra" began.

I had my Olympus OMD EM5 with its 12-50mm kit lens mounted to a Manfrotto 055cxpro3 tripod with a Manfrotto 327rc2 joystick head. This lens isn't a dedicated macro lens but does have a macro feature to it, so as part of my testing how far I can push the Oly, I would have to get REALLY close to the subject. I had to get the tripod as low as the legs would allow it (11.5cm) with the centre column readjusted sideways. +Brent Mail, who hosted Jay and Varina while at Port Stephens, has an image of me holding up the tripod above a few heads in the same configuration taken when we were at the Stockton Sand Dunes a few days later. http://brentmailphotography.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/IMG_0545.jpg The dunes were AMAZING with my some of my favourite images captured that day, but that's for another post. Trying to splay the salt soaked legs into the position I required took some man handling and patient. Hence the "tripod sutra". With my camera mounted to the giant spider like tripod balancing only 5cm from the surface of the water to get a decent image size, Jay performed his little encouragement act ( to find out what this involves you can as Jay himself or sign up to one of his workshops) and the Sea Urchin blossomed from a boring black blob. Composing the image with the aid of the articulate LCD screen and firing the camera with a wireless remote made this difficult task slightly easier.

Later talking to Jay he told us this is why they use a longer focal length macro lens (Canon 180mm) so that the distance between lens and subject can be a more comfortable procedure. Note to self, must buy a longer macro.

Tomorrows post will be the final image from Day 1 titled "5mins Before Sunset & It Looked Good On The LCD..."

Patel Port Stephens Photography Workshop. Day 1

Hyperfocal Distance And Old Habits Hard To Discard.

We all met for breakfast at the Nelson Bay Resort and then a lesson on Hyperfocal Distance and Focus Stacking. I thought we would be "in class" until lunch and back in class till sunset and then shooting sunrise and sunsets. I was wrong. Luckily I had both our tripods and camera gear with us ( +Dianne Hall also attended ) as by 10am we were off to Fisherman's Bay to practise.

I have made a point to shoot mostly with my Olympus OMD EM5 this year to push it to its limits before upgrading either my Nikon D7000 or the EM5. It also bides me time while both the Olympus OMD EM1 and Sony A7r drop in price and more lenses are availible for the latter. So EM5 was the only camera I had with me.

It also bides me time while both the Olympus OMD EM1 and Sony A7r drop in price and more lenses are availible for the latter. So EM5 was the only camera I had with me.

Anyway, back to the Hyperfocal Distance story. This shot was taken at 10.56am at a beach I had no knowledge of with a group of people, at that point, I knew very little about. Then to top it off having +Jay Patel overseeing our progress. Now Dianne can verify that at times I can get a "little stressed" which means creativity and rational thought fly out the door.  :(  The only saving grace was my standard "go to" time for seascapes, 0.6sec to capture water movement. This was when the old habits kicked in and the lesson just learnt went out the window. :( I used a B+W 110ND 10 stop filter at 9mm, f8 with an ISO of 800 to achieve the desired shutter speed for this image. Now at f8 the hyperfocal distance for the foreground rock ensures everything is in focus. What would have been more sensible is reducing my ISO to 200 to reduce any ISO noise and opening up the aperture to f4. At this aperture the hyperfocal distance is 1.25m and everything from about 0.6m to infinity will be in focus. I have never considered shooting with such a wide open aperture. I thought I knew hyperfocal distance well. I didn't.  Old habits die hard but a skill has been added to my arsenel.

Normally I wouldn't share this image as I don't like it compositionally. The bottom foreground rock is cropped off and the midground rock doesn't have a clear space to breath due to the blending in with the background. The only two things I like about this is the water movement and the foreground rocks point to and slope in the direction as the right handside headland. So i'm only using this as an example of  what I should have done and to tell this story.

The next image I'll share from the workshop is titled "Tripod Sutra and A Lesson On Macro Photography"

The Morning Before

Two weeks ago +Dianne Hall and I attened the +Jay Patel & +Varina Patel Ports Stephens Photography Workshop from the 3-5 January. Not normally being so close to the ocean I ventured out before the start of the workshop to test out my Olympus OMD EM5 with a serious sunrise seascape shoot. ( I'm planning on taking this on our BIG EUROPE vacation later this year and thought I ought to test it out thoroughly as I have had it for a year and not done so. I've been relying too much on my Nikon D7000. ) Having scouted on Google Maps for a suitable locaction I headed out armed with a step down ring for my Hitech Filters holder, wireless remote with a  Nikon-Olympus cable converter and headlamp into the dark hours of the morning.

I could see once I arrived the clouds were going to prevent any sight of the sun so no dramatic lighting would be happening. However with these cloud conditions the sky would act like a huge softbox for a longer period of time giving me a longer shooting time this morning. Time I didn't have due to the start of the workshop. I have another image from this morning I'll post next Thursday.

In the mean time I'll start posting the images from the workshop that I have processed so far and the review of what happened there.  I only have two more set of images left to finish. The Focus Stacking and Milky Way images, the latter I think may have pushed the EM5 and Fisheye lens beyond its limits...well for me anyway.

Jay & Varina Patel Sydney Photowalk

We had 54 people turn up last weekend for +Jay Patel & +Varina Patel Sydney Photowalk. Well that's the head count from the group shot, not counting the 2 blow ins on the far left. A decent turnout. Even better was the turn out at the Hero of Waterloo pub after the walk. Usually we get the regular hardcore group of about 12 or so. Not this time. 30 people showed up and if it wasn't for the fact that some of the earlier arrivals had ordered dinner I would have moved on to a bigger premises.  However it did mean that everyone mingled more which was great. I stood for the entire night due to the lack of chairs as any gracious host should and watch everyone enjoying themselves. You're right +Michael Sutton . It is a great feeling seeing old friends and newly accquired friends faces light up with laughter and entertainment. As well as photography and life tips from our two international guests Jay & Varina. It made the stress of a few stuff ups by me along the way all worth while. I now understand the social side of these photowalks / drink and clicks. Spending time with like minded friends, sharing laughs and bonding fellow artists that can  get too absorbed in their craft (me especially) break free and just have fun.

Thanks to all that attended and hope to see everyone again on future walks. :))) Now to edit the Patel Port Stephens Workshop images and a write up too.

P.S. +Brian Rose you asked me last time we met when was I going to host a walk.....well mate, DONE!!! Can I go home now. ;)
