Mykal Hall415,903+Jay Patel and +Varina Patel are here in Australia for a workshop in Port Stephens hosted by +Brent Mail on the 3-5 Jan 2014. I have twisted their arms to do a photowalk here in +Sydney on the 11 January 2014.  So lets show our guest the welcome the Sydney Photo Community has to offer. We will meet on the steps in front of the Sydney Opera House at 6.30pm and slowly make our way to Hickson Rd Reserve for sunset and then to the end point at Observatory Hill by 9pm. I have plotted a few photo opportunity locations along the route as well as public toilets that I know of.https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zw_eAURDDMag.kLJfMBZmQ50o There are plenty of food outlets to grab a quick bite to eat at Circular Quay for the journey. I have walked the route in 1hr 40mins at a leisurely pace but you may want to stay at one location longer if you desire. That will be fine as long as we all get together at the start to greet Jay and Varina and then at the end point to say our goodbyes. Then afterwards if you still feel in the mood to chat over a drink we will be heading to The Hero of Waterloo (if there is only a small group) or the Harbour View Hotel (if there are more than the Hero can fit).I recommend catching public transport to Circular Quay or Town Hall but if you drive in there are a few parking stations within a short walk to the Opera House. I suggest downloading the "Cheap Parking App" from the Google playstore or iTunes. This will give you pricing options from closest or cheapest and links to get to them.I hope everyone has a great time during the walk socialising and remember you can approach Jay, Varina and myself at anytime to ask any questions. Please share this with anyone you may know who would want to join us. :))) Looking forward to see you all and don't forget the hash tag #PatelSydneyPhotowalk+Jay and Varina Patel Sydney Photowalk2014-01-11 18:30:00139

paradigmblue7,948 Welcome to ParadigmShift #7 - my RAW file editing experiment on G+ :)It's been a long time since paradigmshift #6 so I think it's about time we unleash with #7.  Breaking my wrist in two places and sporting an increasingly smelly plaster cast is getting me down.  So I'm kinda relying of you people to brighten up my day by seeing what you come up with in paradigmshift #7.This time I'm offering 3 bracketed images from a shoot I did after work one day in Glenelg, South Australia.  It was just early spring and the thermometer was pushing 30 degrees Celsius so I booked myself an apartment by the beach in hoping I'd get some awesome shots of the sun setting over the water.  And Glenelg didn't disappoint.  Check out my portfolio at SmugMug site here: http://paradigmblue.smugmug.com/Landscapes/GlenelgThis particular set of images was underneath the Glenelg Jetty as the sun set over the waters and is quickly becoming one of my favourite shots.  So I want to open it up to all of you to edit :)Details are:Filter: ND4Shutter speed was 10, 6 & 20 secondsISO: 320F /11Shot on a Canon 6D (17-40mm) - focal length @ 36mmSo there is plenty to pull out of the RAW files (linked below).  As always, I look forward to your edits.  Please play by the rules :)The RulesStep 1Share this event to your public stream.  Failure to do so will result in your image being removed.Step 2If I'm not in your circles, add me -+paradigmblue Step 3Sign into #ParadigmShift #7 with a short comment Step 4Download the straight out of the camera RAW files from the link below and edit to your liking.  The only restriction is to avoid Photoshop and create a composite imageStep 5Add your edit to the event by entering a comment and clicking on the camera icon to the right of the comment dialogue box.  You are free to enter multiple edits into the event.Step 6Show your appreciation to others by +1'ing and commenting on their work.  It's all about having a bit of fun. Please note:1. paradigmblue7,948Welcome to #ParadigmShift #6For #ParadigmShift #6 I'm sharing with you guys another one of my favourite images.  Back in early June, I was fortunate enough to be in Sydney on a week long work conference.  This just happened to tie in with the Vivid Sydney 2013 Festival.  For two weeks, the world renown Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge were lit up with all kinds of lights - it was a spectacular sight and event to attend.  I was really happy that I was able to escape at night on a few occasions after work and capture this event.  For my pics, visit my website here: http://www.paradigmblue.org/website/portfolio/vivid-sydney/After doing this for awhile, I decided to cross over the Harbour and venture out to the less crowded side at Milsons Point in North Sydney and look back towards the city.  It was so nice and peaceful on this side and the view was spectacular.  So I wanted to capture this feeling by taking an image directly under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and capture some of the skyline.  And it's this image that will feature in #ParadigmShift #6This #ParadigmShift will be different from others as it's a long exposure night shot - light is a scarce commodity with his image and it's what you'll do with it that'll make it pop!  I'll post the before and after shot below and you'll see that I opted for a crop guided by the rule of thirds.  As for you, do whatever floats your boat!Other details are:Filter: ND4Shutter: 151 secsISO: 100F /13Shot on a Canon 6D (24-105mm) - focal length @ 28mmSo there is plenty to pull out of the RAW file (linked below).  As always, I look forward to your edits.  Please play by the rules :)The RulesStep 1Share this event to your public stream.  Failure to do so will result in your image being removed.Step 2If I'm not in your circles, add me - +paradigmblue Step 3Sign into #ParadigmShift #6 with a short comment Step 4Download the straight out of the camera RAW file from the link below and edit to your liking.  The only restriction is to avoid Photoshop and create a composite imageStep 5Add your edit to the event by enterParadigmShift #62013-07-26 09:30:0037

paradigmblue7,948Welcome to #ParadigmShift #5For #ParadigmShift #5 I'm sharing with you guys one of my favourite images I recently shot.  Last weekend I did an impromptu short photo walk at a South Melbourne Pier and then ventured off to St Kilda Pier in Melbourne, Australia. See all my pics here: http://www.paradigmblue.org/website/portfolio/sth-melbourne-st-kilda/I found St Kilda Pier fascinating  - not so much being on the actual pier, which was a little boring, but the scenery around the base of the pier - especially the rock platform running parallel along the pier.  One thing that struck me was how long St Kilda Pier actually is - it's huge!It got me thinking about embarking on a project to photograph all of Melbourne's beautiful bay beaches.  Now that would be awesome!! If only I had the time :)Anyway, for #ParadigmShift #5, I'll actually publish below the untouched RAW straight out of the camera for all to see.  As usual, get rid of the dust!  You'll find the RAW pretty much over exposed in the sky - but post production will fix that in a jiffy :)Other details are:Filter: ND400Shutter: 31 secsISO: 50F /13Shot on a Canon 6D (17-40mm) - focal length @ 17mmSo there is plenty to pull out of the RAW file (linked below).  As always, I look forward to your edits.  Please play by the rules :)The RulesStep 1Share this event on your public stream.  Click on the "Share Event" button in the upper right corner of the event.  My goal is for all your circles to know about this and participate if they're interested.  If the above is not done and your image is submitted into the event, I have grounds to delete it.  That sounds harsh I know - but I want this thing to grow and get out there.  It's a small thing to do for access to a RAW file to edit and submit.Step 2If I'm not in your circles, add me :)  Step 3Go nuts and edit, crop, process, HDR, monochrome - whatever floats your boat. Bring out the best of the image according to how you see it.  But try to steer clear of using Photoshop to merge the image with others.  Step 4Add your edit to the event using the "Add Photo's" button in the upper right corner of the event.  You are free to enter multiple edits into the event.Step 5In addition to posting your edit into the event, post it on your public feed and tag me +#ParadigmShift #52013-05-31 11:00:0023
Stephen Godfrey71,668Time: 3pm Location: Newtown Train Station (near the street) I will be there no matter the weather conditions. Even if it is raining there will still be plenty of cover around Newtown to shoot while not getting too wet. Sorry for not updating this before now, been a very busy week. Shoot me a message if you have any questions. ---------------------- It has been about a year since the last time I ran a photowalk so I guess it is time to do so again. Once again we will be heading to Newtown with the intention of doing some street photography. Never fear if you are not into street shooting there are plenty of other things around Newtown to keep you occupied, from the Historic Newtown cemetery to lane ways full of graffiti.  If you are new or never tried Street Photography never fear I will help you get started with a small introductory workshop on how to get started. Oh and the reason I run a photo walk at this time of year it coincides to my birthday so why not do something you love doing around your birthday. More details about the start and finish location to follow. PS I cannot promise another rainbow.Newtown Street Photography Photowalk2013-05-25 15:00:0028

paradigmblue7,948Hi peeps,Welcome to #ParadigmShift #4First of all, a massive THANK YOU to all who participated in #ParadigmShift #1 - #3. I get a lot of feedback from peeps that they really enjoy this event so thanks for participating and playing by the rules. For #ParadigmShift  #4, I chose an image I had a lot of fun with taking and editing.  As most of you know, I've moved house recently and am still in the process of unpacking in my new home.  After weeks and weeks of this, I needed a sanity break and ventured off to #PortMelbourne  to catch the blue hour around this picturesque part of #Melbourne  #Australia.  If you come to Melbourne by boat, you'll dock into #StationPier  and this is the first glimpse of Melbourne you'll get - the gateway to our city.  In taking this image, I wanted to capture 3 elements - the sunset, the water and the buildings.  To do so, a long exposure using an #ND400 filter was my choice.  You'll notice that I have a dust issue on my sensor so it will be interesting to see those who take the time to clean this up.  Other details are:Filter: ND400Shutter: 30 secsISO: 100F /13Shot on a Canon 6D (24-104mm) - focal length @ 24mmSo there is plenty to pull out of the RAW file (linked below). Step 4Add your edit to the event using the "Add Photo's" button in the upper right corner #ParadigmShift #42013-05-10 13:00:0039
paradigmblue7,948EDIT:  This event is now closed.  A huge thanks to all who particiapted.  Be sure to add everyone below to your circles - they're all awesome :)Hi peeps,Welcome to #ParadigmShift #3 :)First of all, a massive THANK YOU to all who participated in #ParadigmShift #2 - it was so much fun seeing all the different post processing pics you came up with. For #ParadigmShift  #3, I'm choosing an image close to my heart.  A few weeks ago, my brother +Dave Tomek and I went on a photowalk around #PortMelbourne   #Australia  - such a beautiful place to photograph.  One of the best known locations is #PrincesPier  - it's an absolute photogs delight.  That is, if you manage to dodge all the fishermen and other photogs in the area :)  For the history of the place, check out the Wikipedia article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princes_PierThe posts in the water are what used to be the extension of the original pier - it would've been huge as behind me still stands a rather large pier. The RAW file was taken during the blue hour:Filter: ND400Shutter: 50 secsISO: 50F /13Shot on a Canon 6D (24-104mm) - focal length @ 24mmSo there is plenty to pull out of the RAW file (linked below).  As always, I look forward to your edits.  Please play by the rules :)The Rules- Share this event on your public stream.  My goal here is for all your circles to know about this and participate if they're interested.  - If the above is not done and a pic is submitted into the event, I have grounds to delete it.  That sounds harsh I know - but I want this thing to grow and get out there :)  It's a small thing to do for access to a RAW file to edit and submit.- Go nuts and edit, crop, process whatever floats your boat - bring out the best of the image according to how you see it.  But try to steer clear of using Photoshop to merge the image with others.- Please note, I still retain ownership of copyright on the image as I took it :)- Post you edit into the event using the "Add Photos" option in the upper right.- In addition to posting your edit into the event, post it on your public feed and tag me +paradigmblue so that I can find it.  Be sure to tag it with #ParadigmShift #32013-05-03 01:00:0043
paradigmblue7,948Hi guys,Following the fun we had with #ParadigmShift #1 (see: https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/116923280194426907545/116923280194426907545/posts/MaFFcFyE1MX) I thought we may as well jump right into #2 :)Thank you to all the people who participated in #ParadigmShift  #1 - it was so interesting to see the way you guys approached post processing. For #ParadigmShift #2 I have a real treat for you guys.  It's my way of saying thanks to all of you who took the time to participate.  #2 will be a RAW file of one of my favourite pics - "underbelly of a bridge".  I chose this pic because I love it and can't wait to see what you guys come up with - going to be totally fun :)This time I'm setting this up as an event so you can upload your edits into the event so everyone can see what you guys came up with in one place. The Rules- Share this event on your public stream. But try to steer clear of using Photoshop to merge the image with others.- Please note, I still retain ownership of copyright on the image as I took it :)- Post you edit into the event using the "Add Photos" option in the upper right.- In addition to posting your edit into the event, post it on your public feed and tag me +paradigmblue so that I can find it and tag it with #ParadigmShift - with a link to the event - and not to the original RAW file.- And in the words of +Debashis Talukdar " it's worth reiterating that this is not to establish the right or wrong way of treating and image, but more an exercise in exploring how different individuals would interpret the treatment of an image." - Couldn't have said it better - so I won't :)- The event is good to go as you're reading this so don't wait and get to it.  Ends next Friday and the RAW file will be deleted.- And most importantly have fun!  Be sure to add peeps who contribute to this into your circles - they&#ParadigmShift #22013-04-12 15:00:0014

Gerard Blacklock23,700Gerry's Australian Photographers Circle Version 3Hey Aussie togs, this is a pretty big update to this circle from the last one, this time I have been more selective in the fact that inactive glus members get booted, the circle was over 600 and as such I needed to comply with 'the less than 500 requirement' hence culling was needed.Note, this is the only circle I share since I really have a interest in local content.Feel free to reshare as you see fit, the main purpose is to facilitate more engagement between local aussie togs. Please feel free to comment and let me know if you know anyone (or if you are indeed one) who is a quality, active and interesting Australian based photographer. Two great communities/themes to get involved with if you like Australia content is #photomaniaustralia +Photo Mania Australia and Australian Landscape Photography https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/1060822645285719679572014-08-13 02:56:2844714219

Gailen Mapes65,179Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera  G-I- 16 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to June 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting May 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes2014-06-16 10:51:18161316

Piotr Tymiński7,625My very own circle of PHOTOGRAPHERS v.2A word of thanks to all of you who are a constant source of inspiration for me and a botomless well of beautiful work which is a joy to look at Real people here who post their own work. Amateurs and professionals. And no, I don't care about the number of followers they may have. It's all about the quality and, of course, quality is a very subjective matter so don't get upset with my choice:) I'm sure it can be a great source of inspiration for everybody. Many of the people in the circles have me in their circles and some do not, but take it easy, you don't need to circle me back - it's all about enjoying some great photography. And some of them (what a horror!) do not even call themselves photographers but somehow happily produce content which beats many so called "pro" guys. This circle is obviously under permanent development as new photographers are added when I come around some work I really enjoy. If you are into photography and I've circled you it means you will sooner or later be in this circle. I am simply putting some sense into my contacts - bringing order from chaos, you see... If you are into urbex and derelict climate please look for another circle of mine which is specifically dedicated to such kind of photography.Sharing is alway appreciated. #photographycircles #photographers  #photography #sharedcircles  #topcircles #circleshare #publicsharedcircle2014-05-30 19:07:18415262020

Venice and the Black Bulky Beast

So my Olympus OMD EM5 has been put out of action due to a careless night in Florence and getting too close to a laser show. In comes plan B. +Dianne Hall has with her my old Nikon D90 as her backup camera to her Samsung Galaxy camera. I know what you're thinking.... she is leaving the better camera in the bag but in her words "It's just so heavy and bulky." I can't argue with that. After caring around my Oly this feels like a boat anchor. Playing tourist for 12 to 18 hours a day this was going to kill me. Well at least I don't have to carry around the tripod for the daylight hours. :))) As I said in the last post, I did actually forget where the on/off switch was on the Nikon. It's only been about 6 months..... or maybe even more since I retired this black bulky beast in favour of the Oly EM5.

France, Rocamadour. Fisheye Madness

I couldn't help myself. I wanted to capture as much as possible in one frame so I broke out the Rokina 7.5mm f3.5 fisheye lens. For a cheap lens it produces good image quality and is a lot of fun to shoot with. If you have a MFT (Micro Four Thirds) camera I highly recommend picking one up.

London, University of Greenwich

Just a short ferry ride up the Thames is another tourist attraction the Royal Observatory of Greenwich. There you can straddle the Greenwich Meridian Line and have a foot in both Eastern & Western Hemispheres. After capturing that image +Dianne Hall and I ventured into the University of Greenwich. We only had 1 hour before our ferry ride back to the city of London so it was a quick roam around the grounds and into a few buildings. This scene caught my eye and knew a low angle would be the shot I was after. Thanks to the tilt screen of the OMD EM1 composing this shot was so much easier than lying on my belly to capture this.

France, Rocamadour

Never heard of it before but will never forget it.

"The story starts in 1166 when the preserved body of a hermit, reputed to be Saint Amadour, was discovered in what was to become Rocamadour.

Saint Amadour is reputed to be Zaccheus, the inn keeper who climbed the tree to see Jesus and whose wife St Veronica wiped the face of Jesus with a handherchief whilst he carried the cross. After the death of his wife Zaccheus came to Rocamadour as a hermit. He built a sanctuary in the rock and locals called him Amator (’the lover’) because of his devotion. Hence Rocamadour was named after the rock of Amator.

Within a few years of a body being found (which was perhaps his) numerous miraculous healings were attributed to the saintly remains. Pilgrims started arriving - and kept arriving!

Within a few years of a body being found (which was perhaps his) numerous miraculous healings were attributed to the saintly remains. Pilgrims started arriving - and kept arriving!

The Black Madonna and the shrine became the main attraction for pilgrims and the town grew wealthy under the important patronage of kings and nobles of the time. Henry II of England was one of the first to come and donate a lot of treasure.

The hospitals and churches, and the village of Rocamadour itself, grew to cope with the influx of pilgrims, as did the 'grand staircase' which pilgrims climbed on their knees to reach the village.

By the 16th century the number of pilgrims had dwindled, and the Wars of Religion had caused great damage to the village, and it was not until the 19th century that the Rocamadour we see now took shape." lifted from www.francethisway.com

We discovered this place on route to the Padirac Caves and only had a brief encounter here that day. We decided to return the following day and explore everything it had to offer, both scenery and food. :))

London, Dark Skies

These group of buildings are in the riverside area near the London City Hall. Looking up all I could see was an image in my mind that was shot with a really long exposure around 5 to 8 minutes. Unfortunately I had left my filters back in the hotel room so that wasn't possible. Also 2 photographers had the same idea and were setup in the prime location at the base of this rather sharp edged building. I wasn't leaving this spot empty handed plus needed a location scout shot for a future return. So I decided to use the same technique I used back in May 2013 while on a photowalk hosted by +Stephen Godfrey. My first experiment with this "Dark Skies" to draw the attention to the buildings. Sometimes people come into your life for a reason.

I'm currently going through mixed emotions with my future in photography. Up until this point I have taken a laid back approach and just let things happen. That has to change and the time is now.

I've been given opportunities that others only dream about and haven't taken advantage these lucky breaks. Life has presented many forks in the road and I keep choosing the comfortable path of routine. I need to heed my inner voice and chase those dreams I keep talking about but don't do anything about it.

I don't know how I'm going to do this but it has to be done. I'll figure that out as I go and share my experiences along the path. 2015 is going to be the year of chasing dreams.

France, Gouffre de Padirac

WOW!!! Our first time, +Dianne Hall and I, underground anywhere in the world and we happen to find this attraction while doing a Google search of the nearby attractions. We were staying in a historic stone cottage in Emboly, Lamothe-Fenelon region in the south of France to fill in time before we moved on to my perceived highlight of Mont Saint Michel and staying in a stone cottage in the countryside of France sounded like a relaxing 5 day break.

An unbelievable experience just floating down the underground river looking up at stalactites and gaping cracks in the earths surface. If you don't believe me checkout +Gordon Laing's image from here as he too thought is was a spectacular place.

On our way from Emboly to Padirac we stumbled upon another location, Rocamadour.  Those images will be the next images posted to this album of France.

France, Chateau de Puilaurens - Not This Time

This is not what I wanted to capture. I had read that the Chateau de Puilaurens lit up at night and seeing how it was only a 20 minute drive from Quillan, where we were staying, I thought it would make a great image. This is where I needed to do a bit more research on what lights up and from what angle. The idea was to capture the chateau on blue hour so the green of trees and their shape could still be recognised with a backdrop of the blue sky. So +Dianne Hall and I drove out to the castle to an area that had a point of view from more left. I set up the tripod and camera and waited for the sun to go down and lights to turn on. As the lights slowly became brighter I realised that what I was the angle I had chosen wasn't going to be fully illuminated. I needed to move but to where? As the lights slowly became brighter I realised that what I was the angle I had chosen wasn't going to be fully illuminated. I needed to move but to where? The road up to the chateau was a narrow dirt road that snaked around dense forrest which had limited views of the chateau on the way up. Then add the dangers of parking if we found the right spot. All I knew is I had to move and fast. Driving down the winding road constantly looking over my shoulder as we made our way further and further from our first location I spotted a clearing on a hairpin turn that was safe enough to park. It also had a clear view of the chateau which was slowly being engulfed by the blacken night. By the time I set up again it was too late. I missed blue hour, the trees where now just silhouettes and the sky too dark. I wasn't going home empty handed and decided to capture Chateau de Puilaurens as a floating castle in the dark of night.

5 Day Black & White Challenge - Day 5

The Best Till Last   I remember lining up this shot liking the different shadows and highlights, angles and curves  when he walked into the scene and before I knew it I pressed the shutter. Without him it still would have been an ok shot but capturing him in the spotlight directly under the end of the white part of the railing, is pure gold to me. I love having leading lines in my images pointing to key points in an image. It brings immense joy to my OCD heart. :)

Thanks +Gretchen Chappelle for nominating me for this #5dayblackandwhitechallenge . It gave me an opportunity to revisit albums I hadn't looked at for a long time.

5 Day Black & White Challenge - Day 4

I Lay My Head Down To Sleep    I never shared this image before as I wasn't happy with the processing of it but feel this is a example of the message being more important than the image.

When I saw this guy laying on top of a grave with the kids toys beside him I immediately saw the story unfold before my eyes. A father grieving for a lost son. Reminiscing of how the little boy would ride his plastic bike, feet barely touching the ground, up and down the timber floor of the units hallway. As the wheels rotated the noise of hard plastic tread beating down on the floorboards would echo throughout the home. Oh how this noise drove his father crazy. Then as the boy grew he progressed to a scooter and now he could play outside in the units cemented parking area as long as he was supervised by his Dad. On one such day as the boyzo... more »

On one such day as the boy zoomed up and down his cemented racetrack, laughing hysterically as his hair blew in the wind, an automatic garage door flipped outwards and the boy struck the bridge of his nose onto the side edge of the door. The bone shattered and the blow pushed bone fragments into his brain killing him instantly. It happened within a blink of an eye as the father glanced down at his watch to check the time as it was getting close to dinner.

The father could never forgive himself for his neglect and on his sons birthday would visit his grave. Dreaming of a boy that would never experience the frustrations but mostly the joy of a son of his own.

The true story is that this man's son is alive and well at the time of this photo. He was running around the tombstones probably chasing imaginary ghosts and the Dad was just enjoying the late afternoon sun.

Like I said, the story is more important than the image quality.

I'll have to go back and re-edit this image someday.

Tomorrow I'll share my favourite B&W image to date. :)))

Not only was this photo taken at a different beach, Turimetta a month later, but closely inspecting the person in the image it's not even Grant. DOAH!!!!! I think it's actually +Steve R

5 Day Black & White Challenge - Day 2

Little Harbour - Wollongong  A few years ago +Keith McInnes lent me his D700 while he was on one of his many overseas holidays. I had never shot with a full frame camera before and the only full frame lens I had was the Nikkor 28-300 f3.5-5.6, so this covered most of the focal ranges I required. I didn't mind shooting with it as it's a great camera but with the added weight of the 28-300 it felt like I was carrying a bag of bricks.

There are two reasons I'm sharing this image. The obvious, bloody fantastic image and secondly this guy attended the same high school I did in a small country town on the Mid North Coast of Australia, called Wauchope.

So please add him as he has under 500 followers and deserves 500,000.

+Andy Smith I tip my hat to you. :)

Somber
I've been sitting on this shot for a little while now. This rock was recently "discovered" by Blake Fairey Photography and subsequently photographed by the best of the best local landscape guys.
So as to not have my shot compared to the others so much, I've held off on processing and posting it. I got pretty wet to get this angle with a good swell running and a high tide, but I think the foreground here made it worthwhile.
Anyways, to the photographers who went before me, Sorry for 'comp stomping' you guys, but I had to give it a crack___Small World

London, City Hall

Walking down to the riverside near London City Hall, the dome shaped building on the right, there were a plethora of interesting architecture to photograph. If you're every down that way make sure you take a 10 stop or greater ND filter as it a long exposure photographers paradise. I forgot to take mine so missed out.

In this photo you see the #LondonCityHall , #TheScoop  the curved foreground interest and off in the distance #TowerBridge . Just behind the camera is a nice restaurant that overlooks this and that's where we had dinner. :)

Boulzane Valley, overlooking the village of Lapradelle

After exploring the interior of the Chateau de Puilaurens in the south of France, it was time to check out the view from the outside. Making our way through an open door way we realised just how windy it was up here. While inside the walls we did encounter strong swirling winds but stepping outside at 2784m was a different kettle of fish. Luckily +Dianne Hall and I were prepared with multiple layers of clothing, t-shirt, long sleeve shirt, jumper, wind jacket and rain jacket. If we didn't have this gear our visit would have been cut short. However we did see a tourist venture into the chateau only wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Strangely enough he didn't stay for long before heading back down. ;)

France, Chateau de Puilaurens - Inside Out

London Eye, On Top Of The World

Bucket List - London Eye. Now completed.

I had to press the lens hood flush up onto the glass to reduce the glare from the window and then a few clone stamps in #PerfectPhotoSuite8  to complete the task. If I had my Lens Skirt attached to the window and lens, which blocks the glare, I wouldn't have had this problem but it arrived a few days after we left for our 3 month holiday :(

France, Inside Chateau de Puilaurens

+Dianne Hall and I climbed, well walked up to the steep track to the ruined Cathar Castle just as the weather turned from a pleasant sunny day to gale force winds and frequent passing light rain. The temperature dropped about 10c from where we parked our car, luckily we were prepared with jumpers, wind jackets and rain ponchos. Nothing was going to stop us from exploring this Chateau.

More images from inside the Chateau and 1 from the outside walls with that distant mountain seen here. However the next post will be from London as I alternate the 2 locations.

London, Westminster Bridge

A typical tourist shot of Westminster Bridge with another London icon, a red double decker bus moving through the scene. This was the first image I capture here then moved around to find another way of telling the story of the light posts with their little crowns on top and Big Ben.  I'll rarely be satisfied with one image from a particular area so I'll try to come up with as many possible compositions I can think of. This is what I call "working the scene" and then that's when the creative juices start flowing. As seen with the first image of this album.

As I'm alternating posts, the next image will be from France. :))

France, Chateau de Puilaurens

Located in the south of France the Chateau de Puilaurens overlooks the Boulzane Valley and the villages of Lapradelle and Puilaurens. This wasn't the reason we choose to stay in Quillan, a 20 minute drive north of here. Our main attraction was the Cité de Carcassonne, a fortified city an hours drive north of Quillan. So when this just popped up in a Google Now card of attractions nearby we had to investigate. A derelict castle, built some time before the 10th century, on top of a rocky out crop was too good to miss.

Of course the next images you see from here will be from inside the castle. :)))

London Icons

An iconic image of London in the rain however I use a little creative inspiration from the only 2 rain drops that glowed as they passed by the lamp post. Instinctively I reached for the healing brush to remove them, wishing there were more rain drops to complete this image.  Once they were gone I just knew I had to have them back again but with more. So while searching my favourite photo editing package, #onOneSoftware   #PerfectPhotoSuite8 , I found a texture blend of rain which I could adjust the opacity. As luck would have it the rain was falling in the same direction as the "fake" rain.

This is the start of our England album from our 3 month Europe holiday.

Bugger!!! I just realised that I skipped a whole country before this album and It was one of my favourites too, France. So over the next few days/weeks I'll alternate imagesfro... more »

I wasn’t going to process any of the images from Saturday nights +Olympus AU  Photowalk in +Sydney  and just rely on the SOOC (straight out of camera) Jpegs as a test run. However after seeing +Keith McInnes  image from his EM10, inspiration got the better of me.

Great Time Thanks To Olympus AU & Images Straight Out Of Camera

I got to spend the day at the Digital Playground here in Sydney thanks to +Olympus AU and their free seminar pass. Todays speakers included two Grand Masters of Photography David Oliver and Peter Eastway, the latter I hadn't had the pleasure of hearing him speak. Both, as their titles suggest, are full of knowledge and were engaging with the audience. I'll have to save my pennies to take one of their combined workshops they do every now and then to pick their brains and have a good time as they are both down to earth guys.

After the seminars Olympus Australia had a night photowalk starting at 5pm outside the front gates of Luna Park and finished at 7pm opposite Bradfield Park at Kirribilli. The main reason for me attending this walk was to test out some of the Olympus gear the Oly reps had with them. I... more »

Both, as their titles suggest, are full of knowledge and were engaging with the audience. After the seminars Olympus Australia had a night photowalk starting at 5pm outside the front gates of Luna Park and finished at 7pm opposite Bradfield Park at Kirribilli. The main reason for me attending this walk was to test out some of the Olympus gear the Oly reps had with them. I particularly wanted to test out the 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens and it's Depth Of Field as this is the next lens on my wish list. :))) I also decided to test out the Jpeg qualities straight out of camera so shot everything in RAW + Jpeg. Yes I shot RAW just as a backup and might fiddle with them later. Then to top it off I threw in some slight adjustments made with an Art Filter and the inbuilt Colour Creator which can change the vividness and colour tone to an image. I still need more practice with the Colour Creator as this was my first time using it and can see it would be useful when shooting Jpeg and wanting to add that slight colour shift. I'm also told it works fantastically for Black and White photography as by desaturating the image then altering the vividness adds or decreases the contrast. I haven't tried this yet but intend to do so.

It was also great catching up with friends +Keith McInnes & +Rodney Campbell who both brought down their Olympus EM10s for a trial run. I get the idea that you two will be using your Olys a bit more than before for now on. ;)  I also caught up with someone I have been wanting to meet for quite a while now but never seemed to bump into, +Philip Johnson. Thanks for the company at the seminars and at lunch mate, we'll have to go for a shoot up your way in the Blue Mountains sometime.  :)

Oh +Olympus AU you need to do more photowalks here in Sydney. I know there are a lot of people who would love to get their hands on your gear. We need to spread the Oly love wide and far :)

Verona, They Have One Too

I didn't know that the Roman Colosseum wasn't a one of a kind. Apparently they are scattered across Italy. So we were quite surprised to find this in Verona and it is still in working order. On this night there was a concert and a light show which would have been awesome to see. We had to be satisfied with being on the outside walking around this impressive structure.

Verona, Making Something Out Of Nothing

Walking around the Piazza del Erbe in Verona, Italy, amongst the umbrella covered stalls selling clothes, tourist trinkets, food and of course coffee, stood this fountain surrounded by tourists. The typical snap shoot would have been shooting it at standing height, square on which would of resulted with the statue blending into the background buildings and there would have been too many other human figures distracting from the main subject. So by getting down low and shooting up the key figure is now isolated against a dramatic mid afternoon sky. With the mood now set by the sky I just added a little grunge to the buildings and fountain using my favourite editing software #PerfectPhotoSuite8  by #onOneSoftware   to complete the overall feeling.

Venice, Cracking Open The EM1

This is what I love about the Olympus OMD 5 axis image stabilisation, 1/3 second handheld. Not the sharpest image but that's my fault for being on a coffee high or old age. I've heard of people getting up to 2 seconds and still getting an acceptable image!!!!! Now that's crazy.

Shot with Olympus OMD EM1, 12mm f2 at f2, ISO 1600, 1/3sec handheld

Venice, Goodbye D90

This is the last image taken with the Nikon D90 during our resent holiday roaming around Europe. For a 6 year old camera model it still holds up with image quality. It's just a shame it doesn't have the Olympus 5 axis image stablilisation and size. The 2 things I missed the most while my Oly OMD EM5 was retired after having it's sensor zap by a laser show in Florence. I wanted to travel light throughout our 3 month vacation and capturing shots after sunset or dimly lit interiors with the D90 requires tripod shooting which is what I was trying to avoid. This was a holiday first, photography second trip.

So as we weaved our way around the alleyways of Venice we stumbled upon one of, if not only, camera store on the island and in the window was a camera that arrived in that same morning. The Olympus OMD EM1. My heart skipped a beat, my credit card... more »

My heart skipped a beat, my credit card switched and I almost broke out in a cold sweat as GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) raged through my body. Now I had been shooting with the EM5 for a while now and fitted it out with the additional battery grip allowing me the luxury of having 2 batteries and a more solid grip on the camera. When I compared the sizes of the 2 cameras the EM1 with it's inbuilt hand grip was actually smaller in dimensions compared with the EM5 with battery grip.

Now the price I would have to pay for this camera, I could have almost bought a Sony A7 back home but that would be no good to me here and now. I would also have to reinvest in a new lens system. Something I couldn't justify for my needs. So I did what any crazy GAS affected photographer would do with a freshly paid off, zero balance owing on credit card, with many Micro Four Thirds lenses, I bit the bullet and purchased the EM1. I felt guilty as hell at the time but am totally glad I purchased it. Olympus and I go together like a hand in a glove. We are both not perfect but man..... we have created some fantastic images over the 3 months away. If your camera is a burden every time you go to shoot with it, that's not going to add to your creativity and vision. Something every photographer requires in bucket loads.

Shot with NikonD90, Tokina 11 - 16mm f2.8 at f8, ISO 200, 15sec without a tripod with the camera sitting on the side of the bridge.

Venice, It's All Blue Baby

Just a typical scene on the canals in Venice. Nothing too complex going on here compositionally as the attracting element is the colour blue. Not every shot has to be a work of art. Sometimes we take an image just for the sake of memory.

Venice, Waiting....Waiting....Click

Sometimes you walk into a scene and the photo is blatantly obvious. Everything is there in the frame. Great light conditions, interesting subject matter etc. All you need to do is compose and shoot. This on the other hand required a little more. It had good light creating an interest mood, the colouring of the stone told the story of the many years of flooding and rising damp, the blue water of the canal and an example of the many bridges that span them. However it needed that little bit more to complete the story, a gondola of course. This is where another skill is required to finalise this image, patience.

When we came across the setting I knew it had great potential. From the middle of the bridge I saw that the gondolas would be passing by this archway and could visualise how the image would look from inside while still on the bridge. All I... more »

When we came across the setting I knew it had great potential. From the middle of the bridge I saw that the gondolas would be passing by this archway and could visualise how the image would look from inside while still on the bridge. All I had to do was set the correct exposure so that I had a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the moving gondola, keep my ISO as low as possible to prevent noise and an acceptable aperture for the desired depth of field. Then wait for the right moment where I could capture just the first half of the boat without any people in the frame. If there were people in this image the eye would be drawn to them and I didn't want that.

Now to this image. As you can tell by the shadows this was captured in the worst possible light, the midday sun but I knew the dynamic range of the Nikon could pull out the details in the dark shadows to present a decent image from just one shot. All I had to do was get a good composition and right timing to came away with a story telling image. I also knew that the 11-16mm Tokina lens set to 11mm on this crop factor camera would distort and stretch certain parts of the image. All of which I'm totally cool with. Slanting buildings and stretched lines to me add a little something to guide the eyes around the frame. We all have our different ways of doing things.

Strike 2, You're Outta Here

Unlike Ulysses who had the foresight of tying himself to his ships mast so he could listen to the call of  the Sirens without falling to their deathly songs, I should have put the camera down as I got closer to the laser show in the Piazza della Signoria, Florence. With Venice as our next destination I was going to miss my little EM5. I did have another camera but it was a Panasonic TZ40 point and shoot. Could I get decent photos with this? At the time I thought I should transfer them over WiFi onto my Nexus 7 (1st edition) to see what was possible from this small sensor camera. I'll share this eye opening story with you after I post my Nikon D90 images of Venice.

Oh well Nikon D90 it would be for now as the main camera........just need to remember how to turn the bulky black beast on. How quickly we forget when we get use to a new system.

If anyone has any ideas on how much it would cost to get the sensor replaced or even worth the effort, it would be greatly appreciated.

This is a screen capture from a video as I don't have the actual footage of the exact moment this happened. RIP EM5 :(

The Moment Before

We had walked around Florence, Italy for over 12hrs and decided that as it was past midnight we should head back to hour hotel for a bit of shut eye. That's when the plan came unstuck. As +Dianne Hall and I turned a corner we were presented with a stream of light blasting out from a lane way. So how could we not investigate this. What we found in the Piazza della Signoria in the middle of the night was like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow or was it??? A rehearsal of an up coming light show with lasers and fog machines.   :))))  To top it off, there were only a handful of people in the entire piazza to witness it.

I shot a lot of photos in a short period of time and this was the pick of the bunch. If only they were kissing then that would have been perfect....oh well, what could have been doesn't matter and what happened does. As Ist... more »
