I love it when history repeats itself..

Cat walking across the keyboard whilst you try to work? It's gone on for longer than you think! Historian Erik Kwakkel recently found this 15th Century book complete with ink cat paw prints!___I love it when history repeats itself..

I found this absolutely fascinating. It's always exciting to see techniques of the present used to preserve the past, but it's very difficult to imagine the scale of the London Blitz until you see it in a graphically easy to digest way like this.

A Great Man Remembered
today marks the 117th anniversary of Buster Keatons birth. If you love any kind of comedy, and don't recognise this clip I implore you to watch it repeatedly. He's genuinely not only a pioneer but a master of his craft. You can't help but admire the man.

I'm going to be doing some hangouts at some point soon where I get to mix work and pleasure! I'm hosting some Genealogy sessions..I'll be on hand (and quite likely a few more people) to raffle through the amazing amount of records I've got access to (coming up to 1.4 billion I think) and will be able to help trace a few family histories live and in hangout, plus it's always generally fun to share stories and talk anyway!  Interested? Go over to the company page, give them a circle and let me/the page know so I can make sure you get an invite!

Genealogy Hangouts
We'll be scheduling some hangouts in the near future where you can get together and share your great finds, your brick walls and learn more about family history with like minded new friends.

Want to be involved? Make sure you circle us and let us know here - We'll put you in a new circle and send you an invite as soon as we have dates! Don't forget to share this with others who might be interested!___I'm going to be doing some hangouts at some point soon where I get to mix work and pleasure! Kiss Goodbye To A Social Life - FF7 is being released on PC
This game pretty much put my life on hiatus when I got hold of it on Playstation back in the day. A school friend of mine thought it was "pretty dumb" and just let me borrow it because he couldn't work out how to play it. I was mesmerised. This was the first game I'd really got to grips with that had a real tale to tell, characters I could identify with and care about. I wanted to see this through, because I wanted to complete their journey and discover how things progressed. Then I wanted to unlock all of the secrets and visit all the hidden places. Around 300 hours later I was satisfied.

It's coming back to PC. I might well have to book some annual leave for this...

Finally - No spoilers in the video, but follow the link for a trailer for the battle that Game of Thrones has been building to for two whole seasons. I have to wait till Sunday for this? Impossible! This literally is the best thing on TV right now by sheer miles.

Must We Choose?
When I started out on G+ more or less the whole thing was a question of "are Facebooks days numbered?" Google plus was set to duke it out in some titanic battle where only one can be victorious and everyone else must be erased. It's not quite happened like that.

Not only have we seen the rise of further social networks with very different slants (Pinterest & Instagram for example), but we've seen constant evolution here too. Whatever was intended originally on this platform, has been revised, altered and tailored to suit the needs of the users that fill it with content, spend their hours engaging and rightly so. Nobody gets it right first time. There's a clear line between what we use G+ for (meeting likeminded peers from across the globe and discussing topics we enjoy) and what we use FB for (a far more informal, arranging to meet with... more »

Red, or Blue?

"You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes..."

Is there room for more than one Social Network, or is it time to consolidate and Make a Choice?

Small nations like Iceland (67.6% of internet users have FB there) The Faroe Islands (60.6%) and Gibraltar (64.9%) have made Facebook into not just a social network - it's almost their entire world. It brings them together as a community and allows them to engage in ways they previously couldn't with their locality. Google plus lets you engage with people you've never seen, will never meet, but you know you've got something in common, something to share with them.

Could you ever cut out one of those groups of people? I know I couldn't. I'll be using both for the foreseeable future.. Any thoughts from anyone else?

New Google privacy rules come into force at midnight. If you don't want your entire web browsing history packaged and associated with your login (they could learn everything from medical worries, sexuality, interests, tastes, fears and a whole lot more for marketing purposes or otherwise) follow the simple steps on the link below to make sure you don't get caught out.

Please do make sure everyone knows about this if possible. It's a horrible thing to accidentally forget to make an informed choice about.

Genetic Portraits
Something interesting to reflect on a cold Monday morning.. I've always been fascinated with inheritance and genealogy but I thought you might like this too, a photographer has been taking photographs of relatives - then splicing them together to create a single portrait in the hope this will show the genetic resemblance between individuals. It's rather eerie how similar some of these people look.

Google Plus, Google Search And Psychology For Beginners
Is anyone using the new Google home page yet? I've not had a chance to get hold of it yet but it's interesting how a change to a grey bar and a drop down menu echoes the G+ home feed. If figures are to be believed Google is making leaps and bounds in subscriber numbers but if the whole thing were to become seamless - There perhaps would be a lot less anxiety about making that leap to a new social network.

It's a proven psychological concept that we find it hard when we've invested so much time/money into something to walk away when it would be much more prudent to - Do you ever remember the car that always needs just a small repair to make it better..every single week? We feel like we've spent so much on it that we can't just buy a new one.. Facebook might not be perfect but for the every day user with... more »

We feel like we've spent so much on it that we can't just buy a new one.. Facebook might not be perfect but for the every day user with their whole life laid out (particularly with timeline now making that so evident) it's a very scary step to jump into the unknown and start again - even if it is a better idea in real terms.

The more we can cushion this transition, make things seem as if they've been here forever and this is just a sidestep - the more we'll see things grow exponentially.___

A little self promotion
I'm never very good at this part, but I thought I'd make a little mention of this as I never have before - though my musical tastes are phenomenally wide I make a very specific kind of music at home and as something of a hobby. It's a genre that is gaining traction fast but is still relatively unknown. I thought I'd pass it along to you, my lovely plussers in the hope that on a gloomy Monday you have something new to provide a little soundtrack. If you enjoy it then I'd be honoured if you passed it along/told a few of your friends.

Electro swing is a fantastic mix that sits well with my old fashioned sensibilities, combining swing and jazz from the 20's, 30's and 40's with modern pop and dance elements to create a fresher hybrid for the nightclubs of today based on songs & melodies that we recognise and love already. I've been lucky enough to play my music out on a regular basis and in particular to manage to travel around Europe on the back of it. I'm by no means the best of the genre, but I do hope if this helps you to dip your toes in the water then I've done a good job. I'm happy to point anyone in the direction of their nearest and best local club/recommend a few bands that can help them get into this a little more. :)___

Facebook might be banned from unsolicited targeted advertising
I'm dumbstruck at this. That's almost all of their revenue straight down the pan. I'm sceptical to say the least that many people will consent to having their entire profile indexed and targeted by third parties for marketing purposes. We've already seen the ruckus kicked up by the pro-privacy groups in relation to FB already..

The Big Reveal
And so this is what I've been working on for a while now.. It's quite a clever little social gaming Android application with an interesting little twist - you can play for fun and pride but you can also wager micropayments should you so choose on the outcome of these games to make things a little more interesting. I've included a link to the facebook page there and all likes are graciously accepted - but there's instructions on there for those of you who are interested to sign up for the beta testing that will be starting in a week or so.

The blog itself lists the financial incentives on offer for anyone keen enough to lend a hand, we'll be starting you off with some free money to try the wagering system and we'll let you keep any money you win throughout the testing process. We'll also be giving away a Samsung Galaxy Tab too.

Mozart - The Original Rockstar
When someone says "You should listen to Mozart", where do you even begin with a man who wrote over 600 masterpieces, starting from the age of five? It can be a little daunting but this link has it all (in addition to youtube and spotify playlists of the whole thing for easier digestion).

The tips in here about what to listen out for, a little bit of context and a helping hand in understanding something that people have devoted their whole lives to and still come no closer to unravelling the enigma that is Wolfgang Amadeus. There are two kinds of people I think when it comes to this.. people who appreciate Mozart, someone who was just so radically different, one of the greatest minds of all time and nothing short of a genius - and people who haven't listened to enough Mozart. ;)

A Little Help From My Friends
This is something of a casting call in the knowledge I have so many keen technophiles in my circles. I'm looking for beta testers to help put a new smartphone app through its paces over the next few weeks.

There'll be a little bit of a financial incentive in it for you which I'm going to get confirmed but ideally the more the merrier. Can I get some hands raised (a +1 or a comment will do fine, then I'll get in touch to arrange the finer details)? Location not important, you can be anywhere in the world.

Can you tell how clever somebody is by looking at them? Have you ever prejudged somebody like.that and been dead right/wrong? I'm very curious to hear your responses!

OZYMANDIAS
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
- Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1818

- Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1818___

The Future That Never Was
I found this and had to pass it along. It's a collection of predictions of life in the year 2000 from the turn of the century onwards. Some of these concepts are blissfully unaware (all clothes will be made from asbestos anyone?), some have oddly come true and some are well on their way..but it's almost romantic looking back at this ideal, science fiction utopia world our ancestors portrayed.

Plussers you enjoy
I've been doing a bit of circle management and I'm looking for a few new interesting people to populate my stream a little. Who better to help me than you guys? I don't really want the same familiar faces that everyone already knows, I'm looking for people you know who contribute, converse and generally know their stuff in the fields of tech, politics, music, science, social media/marketing, TV, cinema, games and anything else that I might find interesting (I value debate above almost anything). Recommend a friend that I might not have and we'll see if we can share some knowledge together. I'm sure I've got a couple that you'd love too!

I'm not too bothered about acres of gif reposts....

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes
So I've noticed the new G+ icon on my tab, and I've seen a few G+ brand pages now too. Is there anything else I've missed? Does that mean we've hit full release now?

It's All About The Wow Moment
When I was young I remember having a Super Nintendo. I played Marioworld for hours. I absolutely found it amazing. That was something really new, fresh, exciting to me. This game is almost ready for release... it made me stop and think.. where next? Can Games keep getting visually better at this same rate or will we hit some hard line in the sand? Will they ever become indistinguishable from TV or reality?

I had to stop and pinch myself during the last game in this series when I found myself stood in a forest staring out over a lake and watching the moon rise as the trees wafted in the breeze...Where next?

Everything about this track is fantastic - I love the music, the video is beautiful from start to finish and it just makes me want more! Anyone know of anything similar I can pick up?

Ghosts of the past
This had me spellbound. Absolutely haunting and well worth a look. We forget sometimes how much history has occurred right around us.

Android
Any Android fans/users around? I'm hoping against hope I get a chance to put Ice cream sandwich on my Galaxy S but I have a feeling I'm going to be disappointed..

I don't know if anyone knows any great forums/discussion boards for android stuff too? I'm itching to get a little more involved!

My next Crowdsource project
Even I think I've gone mad now..but ladies and gents I need your help. After my cookery experiment I'm taking things up a notch and I'm relying on you, the people of G+ to help me. I have a new task. I'm going to try and meet someone from every nation on earth and see how far I get. I'm going to be primarily London based for this task (luckily one of the most multicultural places on earth) so if you live or travel to the area and are of any nationality you think I could use then please do get in touch. If you don't, that's fine..perhaps share this along and tell others to contact me so that we can push this further along. I'm so confident that through the power of sharing and spreading the word - this is a totally possible dream.

I'll keep you all up to date on my progress!

In The Know
So...what websites do you guys use to get your news, comment and opinion (any subject - particularly social media, gaming, TV, politics, world news, tech, music & movies? I'm interested in compiling a list on my new chrome browser and I'm sure I'm missing a few worthwhile ones!

Halloween Question - Your Untimely Demise
I thought I'd keep with a little bit of theming and ask - What would be written on your gravestone if you could have anything at all? I think I'd have to go for "Whoops"

A little Philosophy
Do you believe in fate? Do you have a destiny preordained or do you have complete free will? I'm quite keen to hear your thoughts.

Is it just me that doesn't really see all that much of a big deal in this ripple feature? Passing this "experiment" along is starting to look awfully like one of those email chain letters..

I have to admit I really liked the timeline when it first launched but it's become more and more cumbersome over time. I wonder if the whole thing will be dropped, or will it be steamrollered through anyway. A risky move in the current climate, but it's interesting that there is some kind of consultation process going on. There sure hasn't been one in the past....

Having Fun Out There?
I dug out this article, I've mentioned myself when I have a bit of downtime I'll happily flick through my incoming streams on Google+, chat on Facebook, respond to Twitter etc. There are other ways to keep in touch with our friends (pick up a phone sometime or send a text!) but we seem to spend more and more time doing it online. Is it more convenient? or is it just that little bit more fun? Would you rather use Social Media than watch a movie or listen to music?

Google+ and Facebook
I'm finding this post sums up Google+ entirely. It's really come into its own over time. When I need to kill time or get some meaningful conversation - it's here I head to. Well done followers (both new and old)!

I'd like to draw your attention to the comments on this: +Tom Anderson's most recent Facebook post (left hand image). Then compare that with the comments on his most recent post here on Google+ (right hand image).

This perfectly demonstrates why I get so much more out of Google+___Google+ and Facebook
