Jeff Smith61,248Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Olav “ᚢᛚᚹ” Folland39,543So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005
Lotus Carroll1,776,067This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Instill A Sense of The Bizarre. What is meant by this? Get wacky, odd... put a strange or ironic twist on your self portrait. Get into your "Twilight Zone" state of mind and lets all get a little weird together this month. :) @104871116467578397659, one of our many talented moderators in The Art of Self Portraiture Community, wrote a great tutorial that will help you! (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Inspiration* Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we'll be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. Megan McGuire2,770Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

Fun for the day...

We are "on the list" and "call us if anything changes".

So, our utility pole is leaning a bit. In retrospect, it's probably been slowly doing this for a while, but the wires were noticeably lower this morning. For reference, the bottom wire is our fiber drop, and I can reach up and grab it with my hand. The wires above that are 230V.

Sooooo... we've been watching it all day, and trying to take unscientific measurements (gauging against our bodies, reference points in the trees) and the wires are probably a bit lower, but not outside the margin of error. Not sure which is worse :P

Thankfully, if it does actually come down before the crews can make it this far down the list, it'll probably fall along the property line and not actually hit anyone's house. We would have high voltage lines in the yard,... more »

We would have high voltage lines in the yard, however (that gray pipe is where the HV lines come out of the underground utilities and hit the poles that run between the back yards here).

So, how's your evening going?___

Progress report: There's actually progress lol. Between work and other crap it's been busy, and I just haven't had the energy to make words. And then there was the problem of repeatedly forgetting how to spell "burden" :P

I think this is the front side of the post card, so I just have to do the boring bit - designing the back. There are lots of rules there, and it's just not that exciting.

I've been thinking though, and I have a real concern that this could be mis-used (IMO) by ideologues on either side, and I'm not sure how to temper that. Maybe a centrist/personal freedom quote by some Famous Person on the back.

Woohoo. I actually adulted today and refi'd Kat's car. I'm embarrassed to say what my payment was :P

Next up, call the internet company to re-up my plan. Why pay $130 when I could pay $60? Unfortunately, they're closed for now, and I need to talk to them to make sure they don't drop all my add-on stuff :P

Kinda for fun -

If I'm going to create some original artwork for a projector piece, I have to have some idea as to the size and proportion that I want to end up with. This weekend, I'm working on a piece that will end up as a postcard (more details later) so both the proportions and size are critical if I want to get all the art in, and keep it PG at the same time.

So tonight, I've done some blocking. I've created a series of rectangles in the proportions that I need, and +kat Folland is standing in so I can gauge what I need. Note, this is also roughly the middle of the focal range of my projector, so I can move the projector in and out a bit to fine-tune the size when I'm done.

Thankfully, it looks like the smallest rectangle is what I want. That means that due to scaling by the projector, the art I need to draw is roughly 5.5"x4,25",... more »

edit - if you haven't seen The Beast, it's that huge green thing in the foreground. A 1950's era Army opaque projector. It has it's advantages (if it fits, I can project) and it's disadvantages (it's meant to project huge photos for mission planning, meaning 16-feet is pushing the inner limits) ___

I'm working on a piece: "On our backs lie the burden of freedom"

It will be G-rated, but what I would like to do is get it mass-printed and sell postcards at cost plus a donation to the ACLU and maybe another group or so. Then we could flood the congressional offices with the same message (plus a personal beef) over and over again.

I'd have to buy lots in at least a hundred at a go to make them cheap, so I'd like to gauge interest.

Postcards because (a) they're cheaper to mail, and (b) letters get hung up while they check for anthrax (the disease, not the band)

If you like the idea, please tell a friend so we can discuss. My photo idea is US, but I think I can switch it up a little if this wants to go more global.

I was looking for something else in a search, and this popped up. And you know what? It's still completely valid.

Nine years ago this April (2008-04-24 to be exact) +kat Folland and I got married. Mid-June the same year, she found the lump. She was one of the smart ones, and did regular self-exams even in her thirties.

So yeah, coming up on nine years. That's nine years and I can still cherish her. Back in the day, she was given somewhere between 35% and 50% chance that the cancers wouldn't come back. A whole lot of 'she could get sick again at any moment'.

But nine years later, this photo is still not my wife. Kat is stronger than she realizes, resilient (I'm not nearly as awesome as I seem on TV) and is a survivor.

And we've somehow survived a lot of shit, including me going out of my gourd, but somehow we make it... more »

This is Not My Wife

Well, it's a photo of a part of who she is, but at the same time, who she was. This was a few years ago, and in some ways seems like another lifetime.

But, that's not the point. Something's been bugging me for a couple of weeks, and I think talking about it on Tuesday is appropriate - halfway between #manlymondays and #womenwednesday

I found out that one of Kat's friends is getting divorced, and the reason she's stating is that basically, ever since she was diagnosed with cancer, her husband has increasingly become a complete and utter dick. What doubly bothers me is that they started chemo about the same time, and have been done with that for a couple of years now.

Not cool.

I'll be the first dude to say that living with a cancer survivor ain't always easy- especially during treatment. From the biopsy to reconstruction, a lot of thing suck. And they suck a lot. There's surgeries. There are tubes, and drains for seroma, and watching helplessly while someone you love is in pain, or vomiting more than you ever imagined humanly possible. There's horror, and fear and fatigue. I won't lie about that.

But you know what, Mr. Soon-to-be-kicked-to-the-curb? You decided to e a dick about it. In my mind, you may as well have cheated on her. You broke that vow.

In sickness and in health.

We all make some variation of that vow. We all hope that there's going to be a lot of 'in health' and that that 'in sickness' means someone gets the flu now and then. And I'm sure no one expects something so heavy to happen to anyone - woman or man - in their late thirties. But it happens. Bad things happen to good people all the time.

And in that, you missed a golden opportunity.

You could have focused on the positive. How wonderful your wife is. What a survivor, and a strong spirit, she is. How much just the fact that she's fighting is a testament to how you married a good lady, and how she brings so much good into your life despite the fact that she got sick, but no. You had to become a dick.

Again, not cool.

I'm going to say something right now - I know you had a couple of good years, and lots of sexyfuntime before things got 'hard', and that's a difficult change, but you know what?

I got three months. Suck it. We got married in April and she found the lump in June. I nearly lost her before our life even began. We never even had a honeymoon.

And that doesn't matter. Even at the worst, we found things we could do together. She got me to pick up the camera again and do things with it. She let me take this shot, for example, bearing all her weights and still they weren't so heavy because we were (and are) a team - and honestly I leaned on her nearly as much as she did on me - and just made it work.

And no, things aren't perfect. I've got my issues, and she's got hers. And we both try to not think about the statistics, because they're not rosy. But such is life. Each day is precious, even when it suck ass. Instead of it being a wedge, it's become something that binds us - by experience that we can never fully share, and just by the sheer growth that we've had to do to survive. Being a dick about it was never an option. For either of us.

tl;dr: Nothing would make me happier if everyone that reads this hugs their spouse/SO/lover/whatever and thinks about what 'together' means. In sickness, and in health, and hopefully 'till death do us part'. And, be excellent to one another.

(and, I know people seem to be reticent to share what I post - even publicly - but really, It's okay)___I was looking for something else in a search, and this popped up. And you know what? It's still completely valid.

And we've somehow survived a lot of shit, including me going out of my gourd, but somehow we make it work.

Which gets back to one of the main points in the link:

If you leave your SO because they're sick and you can't handle it. If you leave your SO because it might actually be work (I don't mean abusive relationships and the like). If you leave your SO because being a parent is hard

You suck. You're a complete chicken-shit asshole that can't deal with their own emotions. And, you certainly can't deal with responsibility, or have, I dunno, actual emotions.

And you suck just as bad if you leave your SO just because they got sick. 1000x so if you were married. In any committed relationship that 'in sickness and in health is implied, even if you didn't say it. Don't ask me what I think about the privvy-licking pox closet that back out because suddenly life isn't all beer and sex. This happens. A lot. More than most people realize. And it's disgusting, running off when their SO needs them the most. I know beautiful ladies that their husbands of years just picked up and left because all of a sudden shit got real.

But yeah, not my wife. We contemplated a lot, and talked a lot, and ultimately she learned that she deserved to hold her head up high.

As almost an afterthought, she is my art muse. She empowers me and encourages me to follow those art veins. I'm not sure I could do even a third of what I do without that.

Apparently this is some sort of subscription service where if you regularly wear women's clothes they send you a box every month. You wear the clothes, put them back in the box, send it, and they send you more. Kinda neat really. I just don't wear women's clothes often enough to make it worthwhile.

Anyway, the Goog has given me a free month if anyone wants it.

Gah. All I really wanted was this with an optical port (vagaries with the TV mean that HDMI audio from a PC doesn't really work). Which, apparently doesn't exist unless I'm okay with a circa 2010 chipset. I guess I have to actually research now :/

Needed: HD HDMI (1920x), optical SPDIF/TOSlink, m-SATA support. SO-DIMM would be nice so I don't have to buy new RAM. On-board DCDC would be nice, but either way low power - I have a PicoPSU around here somewhere. Low-profile heatsink.

What I don't need is an gaming machine - I need to pull an MP4 off a network drive and put it on the TV, and YouTube/internet video stuff.

+Reggie Hudson here's Sliver² straight out of the camera, and I thought this might be a bit easier to explain the setup...

First, the lighting setup - I used a single strobe with a barn door closed to make the smallest vertical slit possible 'cause I didn't want any of the background. No diffusers or gels because I wanted the hard light. Modifiers also tend to disperse the light more, and I was already having some ghosting around her (you should be able to see it faintly)

Camera was right next to the strobe. That's part of the barn door in the corner, but easily shopped out, so it's not that important. More important was keeping the light head-on to avoid any shadowing on her. Shadows are a different light than the coat she was wearing...

Camera and light settings are a bit funky, but I had a real problem here. The backdrop is gray. Gray is great for a lot of things, but not this sort of thing. Thus the ghosting I mentioned earlier. My black backdrop would have made things easier, but it's covered in cat hair, and besides one doesn't change out a 10'x20' piece of fabric at a whim :P

Camera settings, this is obviously pretty underexposed. I had to deal with that backdrop, and the more light, the more I'd have to deal with it. Also, B&W is more forgiving in this circumstance, so I had a lot more wiggle room.

So, strobe was set way low. Maybe 60W/sec. Camera, ISO400 (as fast as I really like to go), f4-something (my zoom lens is pretty crappy), and 1sec exposure. The extra time absorbs more light without putting so much on the background.

There's more post-processing in this one than I normally do, but nothing super fancy.

It's so insecure, in fact, that his website's DNS can't even be found.

Before it went tits up, SSL Labs gave his "_cybersecurity_" company's website an "F" grade.

To explain how hard that actually is to do, I'm a bit of a hack who knows a thing or two, and the home-brew server in my hall closet gets an "A" grade.

I loves me some data pr0n, so I dumped city/state/country of our holiday card list onto a map. I should have expected the clustering, but I was a bit surprised at how much.

#googlehome type people -

I'm thinking about making a "family" account for the Home with the idea that everyone in the family can voice-control our stuff from their phones.

Pluses and minuses? Will this fark with my personal Google Assistant?
