Jeff Smith61,848Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Older photos posted will be removed from the event. Please only post one photo to the event and that photo should ideally be taken the weekend or the week prior to the event. Olav Folland39,841So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005
Lotus Carroll1,777,947This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Instill A Sense of The Bizarre. What is meant by this? Get wacky, odd... put a strange or ironic twist on your self portrait. Get into your "Twilight Zone" state of mind and lets all get a little weird together this month. :) @104871116467578397659, one of our many talented moderators in The Art of Self Portraiture Community, wrote a great tutorial that will help you! (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Inspiration* Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we'll be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. Megan McGuire2,846Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

We may have a slight rice addiction here at Chez Folland. Come to think about it, I can't remember the last time there was a potato in the house - other than the couch variety.

But, fiddy cent a pound makes for a lot of cheap meals, too. Optional chicken, veggies and some kind of sauce and two relatively healthful meals for a family of five can he had for under $10.

(also bonus - counts a s "farm to fork" since it comes from less than 100 miles from my house lol)

My to-do for today: primary drive on the server threw a SMART error (meaning the disk is failing) and though I can't find anything actually wrong with it, it's time to replace it. I'm gonna ddrescue 'cause clonezilla has too many options.

Maybe tomorrow, The Boy is here and we're gonna watch a movie instead.

This is the new hipster rage.
"Coasties" (what normal people might call beach cruisers) are out,
"Fixies" are in.
You can do many neat things with fixies.
Fixies are stunt bikes.
Fixies don't have brakes.
Don't ride a fixie.

Not quite perfect, but I think we've figured out the shortcomings - namely, we didn't have the stuff to really make enough BBQ sauce, so that was thinner than I'd like.

Mad props to +kat Folland for taking my BBQ sauce recipe and some admittedly vague instructions and running with it. She's a better cook than she realizes.

FWIW, this (was) a tri-tip, five hours in a slow-cooker with a bunch of BBQ sauce, shredded, and another hour or so to let everything sort out.

I was gonna have seconds, but the kids beat me to it.

I just noticed something.

When Mr Incredible first fought Syndrome's robot, he had a blue suit, and the robot had a blue light.

When the Incredibles fought the second robot, they had red suits, and the robot had a red light.

Not sure what that means, other than both were better in red.

Interesting.

Out of curiosity, I poked around and looked up some numbers.

Taters gonna tate, but as of Thursday, it was estimated that twice as many people were playing Pokemons than were using Twitter, and more than Google Maps even on a daily user basis (which IMO is the key metric - keeping people using the app is where the revenue comes from). Three-day retention rate - how many people are still playing after three days - is around 70%, or twice the aggregate of all apps. Limiting data to the US only, it's blown Candy Crush out of the water (which at it's peak was ~20M active users in the US)

Download rates, are of course unsustainable - there are just so many people that are even going to download, let alone play - but it's going to be interesting to see what happens in a month from now, or more importantly two months from now.

Not that there aren't things that need to change - the big one IMO is making it easy for people/places to opt-out. What happens there could change a lot of the dynamic - for better or worse.

It's gonna be interesting to watch.

Admittedly probably not my best photo (perhaps +Kim Robertson can show me up) but the ATSF's 5031 2-4-10 is a monster. 120-ish feet from catcher to the end of the oil tender might give a sense of scale. And it's not even remotely the largest engine the the California Railroad Museum's stock. Some of the Sierra busters are half again as big (but they're not outdoors, so hey)

'Kayso I'm tired of opening a VM every time I want to edit a photo, so I'm looking for good Photoshop alternatives. Does not have to be free, but it does have to run on Linux/Ubuntu natively.

A full RAW -> output is preferred, as well as the ability to open .PSD files.
I know I can darktable (http://www.darktable.org/) for RAW, etc as a Lightroom alternative, but one piece of SW would be nice.
I can also convert .PSD to .TIFF if necessary.

16-bit color
full editing tools, etc.
not GiMP. I may try it again now that they have limited 16-bit tools, but I've always found the interface to be clunky. Haven't played with it in a while tho.

Plans for the day:
(1) hangout with Boy because it's the day in forever where neither of us have to work. Share a beer and talk about cameras.
(2) make awesome barbecue tri-tip sammiches for the family.

Reality:
(1) Boy's cousins are still in town, so he went over to his mom's about the same time I got out of bed
(2) girls may as well join them to go watch fireworks, since all of us eating together is shot anyway.

Yeah, we could join them, but it would probably make me feel worse.

#photographers I could use some input. I need a water-tight case for my Canon 60D. The difficulty is that this is currently only for one shot, and in less than 3M (nine feet, or the depth of a swimming pool) of water, so I can't justify spending a shitload of cash. I'd be okay with up to around ~$150 but less is more since it's unlikely that I'll use it again.

I really want to start a "Residential Medical Study Monthly" website and post articles to it under pseudonyms until other people take it seriously and want to contribute too.

There'd be stuff like "saffron bee honey cures herpes", "most effective back yard sterilization techniques", and "a study on homeopathic treatment of leprosy".

If it got enough traction, I bet I could get the herbal supplement industry to advertise...

(and I'm sure no one would notice the "this is satire" footer on every page)

Put the onions in the pan, add a shake of??dried sage. Cover and fry gently until soft (about 10 minutes). Stir regularly - you don't want them to colour.

Stir in a shake of??flour. This will help thicken the soop.

Throw in a glass of??wine, turn up the heat to cook off the alcohol. I used red, because I had some open, though most recipes I read suggested white (the purists don't use wine at all). I am aligned to the Keith Floyd school of cooking.

Slowly add some??BEEF stock. I used about 750ml. Pour a bit in, stir, repeat.

Add a splash of??balsamic vinegar. I also added a splash of??Worcester Sauce, though that's probably overkill. This helps to enrich the soop.

Season with??salt and pepper. Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes.

With a few minutes to go, chop up some??French bread. Toast it. Then sprinkle some cheese on top and put it in the oven to melt.

Serve the soop in bowls, finish off with a little freshly??chopped parsley.

Anyone else remember the #smackdown contests? I didn't realize they were so long ago. This was 11/11

Smackdows were two photographers, given a surprise theme on Sunday. They were expected to have 3-5 photos by Friday/Saturday and would lay them down like cards (least favorite to most) along with a lot of convivial trash-talking along the way. Eternal fame was decided by three anonymous judges.

IIRC this contest was "light". Illumination here was from a radiant heater and a ridiculous amount of glow-stick goop.

But, fiddy cent a pound makes for a lot of cheap meals, too. Optional chicken, veggies and some kind of sauce and two relatively healthful meals for a family of five can he had for under $10.
