Jeff Smith60,982Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Olav “ᚢᛚᚹ” Folland39,447So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005

Megan McGuire2,753Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

Nine years ago today, I actually wore a suit. I don't suit. I should wear that tie more though, because it's the text of the Rosetta Stone.

Anyway, happy anniversary +kat Folland We've had some good times, and some hard times, but we've gone through them together, and will continue for many years to come.

So, I guess it's time to go live.

We -- all of us -- need to engage our government. Specifically, we need to harass our representatives at all levels, from state to federal, and remind them whom they're actually supposed to be representing.

Thus, I thought I'd start a project. For the asking, I will send out 5-10 postcards for you (and maybe your friends) as pictured to send into the legislator(s) of your choice. Write, address, stamp, send. Total cost to you is the $0.34 to mail it to the recipient. I wish I could afford to do that too, but hey.

To repeat, I'm not asking for money, or anything else but your commitment. If you want to contribute, or want a large number of cards, please email me at the above address, but I won't accept anything... more »

+SteamySunday it's not photo fare, but something I thought y'all would like.

Starting at around USD$100K (to make it rail-worthy) you too can own your own Pullman, and you can buy carriage from Amtrak to go most places you'd like.

As I stagger off to bed.. (yes there's been gin, but not enough :P )

One of the shining moments of my day was: I put together a custom hardware design that my own boss called 'beautiful' and 'one of the best we've ever done' and we're well into firmware development without a single extra wire.

So of course, the customer wants to change the form factor of the boards. To meet the changes, I could probably do something with the digital section. The analog parts, however, I've laid out a fuckton of motor amplifiers and that shit's going to be compromised. Isolating the drive circuits from the analog control circuits can be tricky on the best of days.

Presented mostly because I found it interesting, but if ya got some evidence of Nasty Deeds, it may come in useful.

It's a good read for varying levels of privacy across some more popular apps, but what I found particularly interesting is that the NY Times maintains a Tor server (and includes instructions if you've never Tor'd before. They also make the additional note that if you really want to maximize safe, you should run Sailfish from a thumb drive.

Anyway, they take this shit seriously, which is nice.

So basically, it's a grilled chicken breast with tomato soup on it.

(cultural appropriation alert) a smattering of Indian seasonings were involved.

On the chicken, curry powder, pepper, tarragon, cumin, tarragon, and a few other bits I'll have to jot down tomorrow.

On (in) the soup, a fairly standard creamy tomato soup with just enough of the above to tie it together.

Bonus: Soup for grilled cheese sammiches tomorrow :)

So, we're mostly applying the KISS principle. Bisque (or whatever you want to call it) is sort of your run-of-the-mill tomato soup with some cream and a smattering of stuff to temper it. Chicken is, I dunno. Pepper, curry powder, some tarragon, cumin, a sprinkle of cinnamon and I really should have written it down.

Side is yellow rice because shut up, and tomatoes may be a berry, but I'm calling them a vegetable.

Trying to figure out what grilled chicken with a (basically) tomato bisque sauce would look like.

I know it will work, one way or another, but the devil is in the details. Also, I'm missing one key ingredient (as in, I'm not sure what it is yet)

Hm. My Jetta supports Android Auto, and it's pretty sweet, but...

BUT there are a couple of 'buts'

First is a dark side, which is similar to the myopic visions of the "cars of the future". Data. Off-line functions are getting better, but they're only as good as you plan for them, and if you live/travel in a 'data desert', you're kinda screwed. A lot of functions won't work at all, and stuff like navigation is limited in scope, and only functional to places you've manually downloaded while online.

Second is also data, but on a privacy side. The current implementation of Auto (as it is in my car anyway) is that the phone is the HID brain. I plug my phone into the cars' USB port, and the two talk to each other and the car has permissions (I've granted) to access info on my phone. Kat plugs in her phone,... more »

Kat plugs in her phone, and she gets her stuff, not mine.

Third is also data, but on a fiduciary side. Currently, when I get in my car, I plug my phone into the USB port, and my phone does all the heavy lifting other than GPS. The net effect is that my data plan is used by the car. If Kat borrows the car, it's her data plan, etc. Something baked in would be like OnStar, requiring a separate account per car. Effectively that would double the cost of our wireless service.

I do like it tho. The controls/apps are simplified and easy to use (basically maps, audio, and chat/text apps that can be used via dictation) and I swear their Assistant implementation is better than my Pixel.

A thought. We asking (rightfully) for an open and neutral internet, but at the same time, we're effectively asking the government to regulate it.

We're asking the government, and particularly this administration, to define "neutral", and enforce whatever that means with the full force of the United States.

This could work out well, or it could have a devastating effect on the internet globally. Ponder the maps, and how much of the world's net traffic passes through the US.

Geez. It's now 2AM and apparently The Boy and I ended up bullshitting for like three hours.

Topics included:
Watching someone drift an aircraft carrier is completely bad-ass
There will never be a remake of The Last Starfighter and if anyone wrests the movie rights from the creator, they should be stabbed in the neck with a dull pencil.
Likewise with Flight of the Navigator
The Chinese food that the cooks eat is much better, and far more interesting than what's on the menu, and he should bring us some
Dolph Lungren is one bad-ass mofo, and also smarter than you and me put together.
Grace Jones is (was) hot. We can't blame Dolph Lungren for quitting MIT so he could keep shagging her.
Predator One was good. Pred 3 was maybe better because (1) there was context, and (2) the predators actually had personalities.

The Boy has never seen neither Kentucky Fried Movie nor Amazon Women On The Moon. We'll have to fix that.
Neither of us know why we don't have a copy of UHF
Landing a Harrier on an aircraft carrier without nose gear is also bad-ass
Harrison Ford is systematically killing himself off in all his movies, and we can't blame him
Newer James Bond is better than older James Bond because he's actually a gov't assassin and shit, not some playa.
The Boy has never read any Ian Fleming novels.
Episode VII is like Episode IV, but with better explosions and bigger plot holes.
The IMPS The Relentless fanfic has better CGI than most of the Lucas films.
Police Academy was kinda funny. The rest, not so much.
A Wargames remake wouldn't work because of the Cold War tensions in the original. We decided to not talk about that changing.
And stuff.

Edit- BTW what you order in a Chinese restaurant is just like the cheaper stuff, only with a few more vegetables. ___

Verdict: I think this will make a nice Summer gin. It has secret herbs and spices (the sign in the store said acai and I think cucumber- cucumber's all the rage these days anyway) but the total effect to me was a pleasing hint of watermelon. It's a bit sweet for a cool night like tonight, but I can totally see myself with a nice G&T using this stuff on a warm summer afternoon.

In tonight's "how in the hell is this possible" category:

May 6, 1957 (60 years ago), Roger Bannister broke the world record for a sub-4-minute mile

May 6, 2017, this guy ran a 40K in just over two hours.

That's 4m36s per mile. For two hours.
That's an average of about 12mi/h. For two hours.

I may have underestimated the size of the new printer lol.

Also not (quite) pictured: The thing peeking through the door in the living room is a 3D printer that also needs to fit in here somewhere.

We don't actually use that PC (it's mostly been a guest computer) so it may have to go. The printers are networkable, and the 3D printer runs off a SD card.

If you have anything USB-C, you should definitely follow this guy. He tetst everything for compliance.

I've done a USB-C charger review. Soulbay's 65W charger.
tl;dr: Bad charger. Bad cable. Avoid this.

NOTE: This charger is nearly identical to the BOLWEO charger I reviewed a few days ago, down to the serious spec violation. Common suppliers, after all... so this review is the same as the other one.

This charger has some serious Type-C spec violations, most pressing of which is that the manufacturer tried to save a few cents (if even) by tieing together the two CC pins in the connector instead of using two separate resistors.

That means that this charger won't work with e-marked cables at all, such as the one that comes with Apple's MacBook Pro, or other USB-IF certified cables.

Also the 2M cable they shipped with this charger also violates the spec too with too high IR drop on GND.

Soulbay needs to fix this immediately... I should also mention that this product is listed on Amazon, which has a strict policy against selling noncompliant USB Type-C products.

Look elsewhere for a USB-C and PD charger...

I'm musing on this so I'll probably say something again at a later date, but

It would be pretty cool to organize another serious HIRL. Death Valley, 2011, can never be repeated, or probably beat, but it'd pretty awesome to get as many of us as possible together in one place.

What I'm proposing is US-395, somewhere between Lee Vining, and Mammoth. That general area would get us both Mono Lake and Bodie, and perhaps a few other things as time allows. There are a number of affordable crash pads along the stretch, though Lee Vining is a bit far North, and the surprisingly nice Motel 6 in Mammoth is a bit far South.

Just a thought. There's a lot of you fuckerbutts I haven't met, and a few I haven't seen in aeons, so it could be fun.

Evan Lewis does some phenomenal kinetic sculptures. You've even seen them, if you've ever watched Twister - all the stuff in the Aunt's yard.

Then you click on the Furniture tab and go 'huh. That's not what I expected at all'.

Not knocking it- there's some neat stuff, but furniture-wise, he seems to experiment in a lot of forms. Some Prairie stuff, some Federal stuff, Scandahoovian... but not the airy, fluid stuff that is his sculpture.

Anyway, it's interesting to see the dichotomy. I'm not immune to it, I'm sure, but it's interesting to see it so pronounced.

And your bill, and your bill
Lark, lark. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!

I’ll pluck your head
I’ll pluck your head
And your head, and your head,
And your eyes, and your eyes
And your bill, and your bill
Lark, lark. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!

I’ll pluck your neck…
I’ll pluck your back…
I’ll pluck your wings… your belly…
… your legs… your tail…

FWIW, you sang this when you were a kid.

Lark, nice lark
Lark, I’ll pluck you.
I’ll pluck your bill
I’ll pluck your bill
And your bill, and your bill
Lark, lark. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!

I’ll pluck your eyes
I’ll pluck your eyes
And your eyes, and your eyes

Lark, lark. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!

So with the $200-250 rebate running around until tomorrow, Kat half-talked me into getting one (I was the other half).

One the one side, (we) hope it'll get me using more of my photography in my prejector work, and on the other, perhaps more giveaways and maybe making some of my prints even more affordable. :)

Know what would be awesome? If people took me up on my free civics postcard offer, or do their own, rather than ''like and (maybe) share.

"Like and share" does absolutely nothing. No one in power cares. A postcard (or maybe a phone call) actually sends a message to an individual, and that's a helluva lot harder to ignore.

The League of Women Voters has an excellent resource for names, addresses, and phone numbers here: https://hq-salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/5950/getLocal.jsp?

Note, it's by Zip+4 because of districting, but you can find your Zip+4 easily at the USPS website: https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction!input.action

Just a reminder that I'm actually doing this. If you'd like 5 or 10 free postcards that you can send to your "favorite" legislator (or you and your friends can each send one or several) hit me up at postcards@olavf.com. I can arrange for more if you want them.

FYI I am getting nothing out of this other than hopefully help increase our level of engagement with our so-called "representatives". This is completely non-partisan- I don't care what you write, so long as you do so. Call it a civics project if you will.

Any and all personal information (addresses and emails) will only be retained long enough to ensure that you have received the cards. After that, it will all be purged unless you say otherwise.

Feel free to share this
email me at postcards@olavf.com if you want in

If you want to contribute, or want a large number of cards, please email me at the above address, but I won't accept anything more than I need to do this, at best.

Also, any personal information (I will need an address) will be purged monthly unless for some cockamanie reason you want to help with logistics/distribution or be on my Christmas card list.

**edit- also, 25 (or so) of the first batch of 100 are already claimed. So, there may be a delay while I get the next batch (of 1000) printed___Just a reminder that I'm actually doing this. Nine years ago today, I actually wore a suit. I don't suit. I should wear that tie more though, because it's the text of the Rosetta Stone.

Anyway, happy anniversary +kat Folland We've had some good times, and some hard times, but we've gone through them together, and will continue for many years to come.

I'm dead serious about this postcard project, so if you'd like 5 or 10 (or maybe more) so that you and your friends can send "love letters" to your favorite elected official, email me at postcards@olavf.com and I'll get some sent your way.

f you're not sure whom to contact, here's a good place to start. You can try here: http://act.commoncause.org/site/PageServer?pagename=sunlight_advocacy_list_page (Note: You'll have to click to the person's website to get a mailing address)

Or I'm more than willing to help.

Note: I am in no way affiliated with, nor endorse, Common Cause and may suggest a different one in the future if I find a better tool.

Check this out. The Goog is confident enough about it's voice recognition capabilities that they're supporting multiple accounts on Google Home.

It'll be interesting once we get the kids' accounts linked to see how finely tuned it can differentiate (say) two male voices.

This is kind of a big deal IMO. It also means that if you have Google Express set up, your kid can't order cookies while you're napping.
