Jeff Smith61,660Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Older photos posted will be removed from the event. Please only post one photo to the event and that photo should ideally be taken the weekend or the week prior to the event. Olav “ᚢᛚᚹ” Folland39,838So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005
Lotus Carroll1,778,560This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Instill A Sense of The Bizarre. What is meant by this? Get wacky, odd... put a strange or ironic twist on your self portrait. Get into your "Twilight Zone" state of mind and lets all get a little weird together this month. :) @104871116467578397659, one of our many talented moderators in The Art of Self Portraiture Community, wrote a great tutorial that will help you! (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Inspiration* Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we'll be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. Megan McGuire2,821Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

+Angie Person and +Jess Nut I tried the "Olav is a..."

The only thing I got was "Is Olav a word" :P

But first link was Urban Dictionary, and I quote:

A true Olav will be recognized by his huge mindraping beard, his carefree attitude, his unbeatable comeback and his monster piece, in both aspects.
"Holy shit dude, that guy was so Olav"

Stupid Man: "You're stupid!"
Olav: "No U"

"I will have to train more and grow a beard if I'm ever to become more Olav"

I. Am. A. God.

Hmmmm... I think I've been going about this the wrong way.

There's just no way to mount my RAID array in Virtualbox (directly). RAID arrays do not typically have partitions, so /md0 comes into VirtualBox as /sdb. No partition, no mounty. I thought about an LVM group, but I'd have to create a partition somewhere else, and then add the array to it, and then add that to Virtualbox. Otherwise, I'd lose data. (the whole thing sounds risky, to tell the truth)

So maybe I can load /sdb and /sdc into the VM, and then make a RAID from there. at that point, normal filesystem rules would apply, and I can mount the RAID where I need it.

Gotta think about this one a little.

My apologies for linking to a PDF, but here's all the data from the CNN post- Labor Day poll.

I am, for the sake of discussion, going to ignore that almost all the questions are Thrump v. Hillary. That's an expected bias, as they represent the two major parties.

Instead, I'm going to ask you to scroll down further. Down where they start breaking out the demographics. You know - race, income, religion, political affiliation, age...

Except age. As you scroll through the demographics, you'll note a repeating pattern - the "18-34" block is over and over again "N/A". Sorry, your opinion doesn't count (or at least they didn't want to ask).

I just ask you to keep this in mind when you watch the news. Whomever you're thinking about voting for, the media is playing the party game. It doesn't really matter too... more »

I know I asked this morning, but before I do Stupid Things...

Is there any real advantage of populating a vdi vs mounting a partition? For example, I might want to create a "fileserver" VM and mount /dev/md0 for data, and another "webserver" VM, and mount /dev/md1 for it's data.
The former saves about 2TB of re-seeding from backups, but I don't wanna if it's a dumb idea.

This morning's VM question:

Advantages/disadvantages of dedicated disk volumes vs populating the VDI with the data?

For the former, it wouldn't be that big of a deal to build a smaller RAID for the web server, and keep the existing file server structure intact.

Which, would certainly save time (and a little heartache) since there's a couple of terabytes involved, and I haven't scrubbed my backups in a while.

(please respond in the share, so I can keep everything together in one discussion. Thanks.)

If anyone's bored and/or wants to mock me this weekend, the recent death by Bunga Bunga of my server has me wanting to rebuild from the ashes and run several VMs to keep the bits separate, and theoretically less vulnerable to the entire server getting hacked.

Basic setup:
Iron:
-hexacore Phenom II
-16GB RAM, will go to 32GB at the earliest opportunity
-2x Gigabit NICs, thinking about a 3rd if it makes things easier - web server (and the host) will only need internal access for maintenance though.
-256GB SSD for host OS, and presumably core VM stuff
-2x 3TB WD drives in a RAID-1 configuration
-other stuff

Topology:
*note: host machine does not handle internal internet traffic. I have an ERLite3 with it's own IP to handle that traffic
So, I want to end up with two VMs. One file server, one web server. That bit should be fairly straightforward, I think.

All OSes will be Ubuntu because I'd like to just support one OS unless I have to do otherwise. VirtualBox because it's free and I have some limited experience.

Plan:
Host OS on SSD. Guts of Guest VMs also on SSD with storage on RAID drives. Initial topology is 1 core host OS, two file server, and the other three dedicated to web. Memory 4/4/8 until I expand. (open to allocation changes)

Limitations:
File server needs max throughput on drives. Web server is on a 100/100 synchronous fiber line, so speed matters just a little less. Also, don't think I can swing RAID10 at this point.

Questions:
#1: all the data I need is on the existing RAID. (1a)Theoretically, I could set up the VMs, and mount the existing data as NFS shares, which sounds like the easy out. But all data, including MariaDB dumps for the web, along with certain config files, are backed up on a dedicated PC. (1b)So, I can wipe and repartition the RAID drives as necessary if it'll improve performance.

#2: #1a & b might be too fancy? "standard" VDI dumped on the raid array might be safer - this is unclear to me from my readings.

#3 I'm working on, but largely depends on #1 and #2

You may laugh now.___This morning's VM question:

Tonight's catching up on archives has been thwarted by my server getting hacked. Thankfully at least the backups are fine (I haven't dug into the main files yet) but I can't get past recovery mode. Awesome.

So in the mean time, if you're not familiar with my stuff, my photos are hosted off-site here: gallery.squareheadphotography.com (and if you want something, basic stuff is cheap, fancy stuff, talk to me) all proceeds go to the Make Folland Great Again campaign.

If you're geeky/linux (fedora or ubuntu, not sure if I'm ready to fully switch)/VM/etc, leave a note if you don't mind me hitting you up with questions. I'll make a separate post with hardware, etc. when the time comes.
(I have FB IT friends too, but you know how they are)

In a particular small country, there was a king. He was much beloved of the people, and so they built for him a castle. But they were poor people and could only afford to build it out of grass. So they worked for weeks, and finally completed a lovely woven grass castle for him. And the king was pleased.

Another country, significantly richer than the first, presented a peace offering of an ornate throne. The king accepted this gift graciously and was most pleased. The only trouble was, the throne was very uncomfortable. So the king got himself a more comfortable chair and kept the massive throne in the attic. Naturally, it fell through the floor and killed him.

The moral of this story:

People who live in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones.

I was going to ponder other things, but I think I'll take leave for the night by saying The Dark Crystal is the best puppetry movie ever made, and probably can't be beat now that JH has passed. The movie storyline is a tad simple (as most movies are, really) but reasonably solid... but the technical mastery is unsurpassable.

Chamberlain alone took Frank Oz, plus four assistants to pull off, as the puppet was articulated down to the eyeballs.

In fact, months were spent just finding someone that could make eyeballs for the characters, because they wanted life-like eyeballs, and the normal prosthetic manufacturers couldn't pull it off.

Next time you watch it, enjoy the story, but pay attention to all the little details. They're pretty boggling.

Do you like gin? I like gin. I have several very lovely gins, and probably something that might suit your tastes even if you're not sure. Most people seen to prefer the Sapphire, which is lovely, but over time, I've found it a bit too heavy on the florals for everyday abuse. The others are also nice, but really for the more adventurous. Which is also nice, but one has to be in the mood, you know? That's also a nice mood, but one that shouldn't be taken lightly.

All in all, to be honest, it'd be awfully nice to play golf tomorrow. Golf isn't a sport, it's a game. And if you take it too seriously, it's not. A good round of golf is very nice, and if it's a particularly nice round of golf, you can go to the euphemistically named "19th hole" (there are only 18 "holes" in golf, you see) and gaffe with your friends over a bit of food and a nice gin and tonic, and talk about what a nice round of golf you had. Unfortunately, I can't play golf tomorrow, so I guess I'll have to have a nice gin and tonic and watch other people play golf on the TV. Maybe I can talk to other people that also like golf, and we can have gin and tonics and talk about how those people are playing golf. That might be rather nice as well.

I should probably sign off though, because the weather is exceedingly nice. Not to hot, not too cold, and perfect for another gin and tonic. But the logical part of my brain is also being nice, and is reminding me that if I have too many gin and tonics, I won't be able to watch golf tomorrow. I think that would be nicer, so I'm going to go with that.

So I hope that you have a nice temporal location, whatever that means to you, and if you have a gin and tonic, do hoist one for me.___

Next time, I'm just going to make the croquettes. Everything turned out great, but they were a meal unto themselves.

Leftover farfalle (bowtie pasta), ricotta, parmesan , & mozzarella. Lovingly breaded and fried. Oh yeah.

The hardest part of building a harbor has to be finding a pretty place in which to put it.

Whomever built the harbor in Trinidad, CA did a pretty decent job, I think.

The wharf in Trinidad, CA has a rather clever solution to a significant problem. The town has a natural harbor formed by rocks that protect the fishing boats from the Pacific, but leaves little room for normal harbor stuff. So the piers are on the opposite side of this rock in a natural inlet, but there's no room for equipment to get the boats out of the water for servicing.

The solution is this rather ingenious little number. It's a shuttle on rails that is run out below the water line, and the boats secure themselves to it and are winched the 20 or so vertical feet up the bluffs to a crane capable of putting them on a trailer. Normally , one would see boats 5-6 times the size of this one on the ramp.

When you slack on grooming your bunny, you make a fur bunny of at least the same volume of the actual bunny.

If you have bunnies, you'll appreciate that Her Highness allowed me to groom her for around 45 minutes tonight.

If you don't have bunnies, yeah, we kind of live in a barn. It's inevitable, particularly since we've been gone for a week. Hay happens.

If you spin, I'll trade this for one fucking good video that shows how to cast on. I'll even card it if you like.

What a lil' light pollution will do for ya

West-ward facing across Quinault lake, which generally means some stupid number of miles between here and the coast, where any significant towns are.

30+ second exposure, slightly enhanced, because this was about 11PM.
